  • Knife laws are getting stricter and stricter everywhere in the world... As knife lover we understand that knives are mainly tools. Laws are often restricting knife carry for the enthusiasts while not effecting knife crime much at all.... Is the coming new dutch knife law putting an end to our channel? We have much to discuss in this episdoe.

My spicy take on this is that EU is too scared to look at WHO is committing the crimes with knives so they will rather just like to regulate the tool.
It's the same thing as it happened with guns - terrorists used illegal automatic rifles and hand grenades to kill civilians but then EU put more restrictions to sport shooters and hunters 😐

I'm sure you're familiar with how that's playing out in the U.S.A. right now, but for everyone else-
All over the media you see "Guns kill more kids than anything else.". What they fail to tell everyone is that they included 18 and 19yr olds in the equation, and that most of those deaths are gangsters shooting each other, not random little kids getting shot in school shootings. No gun owners that I've ever known are ok with any number of kids being shot, ever.
And speaking of school shootings. The reason there's so many listed each year in the US is because they include any incident with a gun within something like a 1000m of a school a school shooting. It's disingenuous at the very least.
When statistics of shootings in the USA are mentioned in the media you have to realize that they stretch the truth so far it's ridiculous.
I leave everyone with this thought-
“The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.” -Alexander Hamilton

There were knife laws in Croatia prior joining the EU letting one carry knives but not daggers. Then later on came the laws that at one section allowed and at the other section didn't allow fixed blades, then it had to be 90mm max blade lenght etc etc. I know, I have read all of it before deciding to buy a Victorinox Forester for minor handyman work because I got tired of having those cr*ppy utility blades, they get expensive in the long run. Our knife laws were/are a mess and when you add EU laws... In the worst case I could be arrested, convicted and jailed for having kitchen knife in blister packing in the trunk of my car while going home from the knife store. Yeah.
It all depends on the mood of the policeman who finds the knife in my possession while in public (my car is an extension of my person, the roads are public, the original packaging could be interpreted as a sheath) and the mood of the judge.
I was stopped once and was searched because some drunk threatened to kill someone in a bar not far from the place I used to work in. The policeman wasn't stupid, he saw how I was dressed, saw bunch of tools in the car, he checked what and where I worked, told me about the unclear law and let me go. With the knife.
I'll keep my eyes open for new changes in law and if it goes full retard I'm considering buying a 15cm fixed blade, I'd feel stupid being jailed for a Victorinox because of some possible paranoid Karen bystander couldn't understand I was using it for my work.
Hell, I'm thinking of machete now.

Worked in the law enforcement / safety field in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 for around 20 years. Never have I found a 'real' knife under questionable circumstances, mostly cheap kitchen knives and other garbage or gas station junk, of course carried by minors. Mainly honest people like knife / EDC enthusiasts and craftsman carry their tools with the responsibility necessary.
The knife laws as the have been for years were good enough in my opinion. Some knives were banned but most shouldn't have been a problem. Too much of the 'knife' based incidents has been caused by minors (under 18 y/o) with kitchen knives, machete's or 'cheap fake tactical' knives. Almost all situations which are already covered by existing laws.
So, no new laws will reduce the amount of knife related incidents if the current laws are not enforced to it's full potential. Quick side note: a lot of police officers I met during my work didn't even had a good understanding of those knife laws or about the weapon laws in general.
I truly hope commonsense will win over misplaced fear and a lack of understanding!

Especially my Leatherman when I'm at work (I have it in it's pouch, inside a tool pouch in my backpack with lots of computer equipment (if i was in law enforcement, i would be more concerned with this guy carrying lots lots of "hacker" tools, literally😂 than a multitool) In the woods i carry an axe a small knife and a saw, well longer trips tho.

Usually it was a girlfriend that got mad at her baby daddy and stabbed him with a kitchen knife and it would not have been anything fancy, just think Ginsu steak knife or another situation is what we referred to as a "Mental", someone who is on psych meds that stopped taking them. The call we would get from a family member would be "so and so is refusing to take his meds and also refuses to bathe and he has a knife" so we show up and have to sweet talk them out of holding the knife and take them to a hospital to get meds from a doctor. That's about the only time I thought about knives. I've never been shot at by anyone with a knife but I have been shot at by criminals with guns (strangely they were never NRA members, go figure). I actually used to joke with people that I found a knife on, "Hey, don't shoot anyone with that". I miss the job. Good luck to you guys, I really like your show!

Here in Germany, you have to be a lawyer, to know all the rules.
You are actually allowed to carry a folding knife or a fixed blade with a blade length of max. 12 cm (does not include folding knifes without a locking mechanism). But the blade should not have more than one sharp edge (like a dagger) and it should not made for fighting (like a karambit or a blade with tanto shape) - very foggy, because for example a bowie was a tool and a defense weapon at once. Folding knifes should be made to open with two hands (so no springs or helping dots). If the blade is longer than 12 cm or if the folding knife can be opened one handed, you should have a reason for it, like hunting, camping or climbing - also very foggy. Machetes and axes are actually tools. But if the axe is a double axe, it becomes a throwing weapon and it’s also sometimes difficult to tell the exactly difference between a machete and a chopping knife. All knifes are legal to own with the exception of a fist knife, when you are not a hunter or somebody, which has to work with leather. If you are in a weapon free zone, the max. blade length is dropping to 4 cm, when you don’t have a permission to own a weapon (small or big gun license / gun ownership card). And at least, if you are carrying a legal knife, but you trigger a police operation, you still have a problem.
There have been plans by two politicians from a socialist party to tighten the law even further, but fortunately so far they have not succeeded.

Regards from the Czech Republic. I love your channel!
First, let me say I'm appaled by the amount of restrictions increasing in the Western countries during the last few (or perhaps not just a few) years. There is simply no excuse to force citizens who broke no law to explain and defend why they carry something.
Here, we can carry basically anything (knives, axes ... guns require carry license) anywhere. There are some exceptions - courts, prisons ... perhaps a disco joint wouldn't allow you to enter with a big knife for example - but generally noone cares what you carry. Even the cops don't care unless you act suspicious or in an illegal way.
My friend coming from work with a machette in one had and a hatchet in the other to have a dinner in a pub a few months back? No problem. He entered, said Hello!, put the tools unders the table, had a food and a few beers, then paid, took the tools and left. Problems? None. And last week a guy with a medieval executioners axe :D was having a beer in a bar I often visit and guess what? After having drunk a few beers he picked up the axe and left. He told me he was to be in a reenactment the next day.
And another friend of mine got beaten by a bunch of unarmed thugs. My point? The problem is not the tool but the person (who might be a tool himself LOL).
The Czech Republic - even with these "mild" laws - is one of the safest countries in the world. But should the EU decide that the Greater Good (I'm no Tau sympathizer!!! LOL) demands law-abiding citizens not carrying guns, knives, axes, pepper sprays etc., we would be truly frakked anyway.

Here in the UK the law is basically this, non-locking folders (slipjoints) can be carried in most places without having to give a reason, except for in certain places, courts, schools, airports etc, but in addition to being slipjoints they must be sub 3 inch or 76 mm in length. Anything else with some exceptions, you have to have good reason to carry and the reason, "Just in case I need it," will not do. Also certain knives are banned outright, such as balisongs, flick/gravity/automatic knives and a whole host of others (It's complicated). However UK law is heavily influenced by believed intent, so if you carry any item at all (And I do mean any) for the purposes of, "Self defence," that then becomes an, "Offensive weapon," in the eyes of the law because it's being carried with the possible intent to cause harm, even in defence of yourself or others, even down to a rolled up newspaper. However if for instance you have to an umbrella because it's raining and someone attacks you, and you use that umbrella to defend yourself, you're probably OK because you weren't carrying it to defend yourself, you were carrying it to keep the rain off. It's very complex. A far better explanation is given by a British barrister on the RUclips channel, "Blackbelt Barrister. 👍

The driver behind these is the realization that it is virtually impossible to fend off a knife assault. Even if someone carries a gun, an attacker with a knife within 20ft can probably kill you before you can draw, unless you can actually run away. Now that is not theoretical, there was a long series of lethal street stabbings in London and other parts of Europe, many of which would have remained a plain brawl but one of those idiots had a knife at hand.
Now if you check the actual legislation and the enforcement guidelines you can find that work sites, workshops, private (not publicly open) area is not relevant. If you are a mechanic and use knives in your workshop or at a construction site it is out of scope. If you walk around the high street with a 7 inch blade knife flinging at your side it has little to do with being a mechanic I guess, otherwise you are supposed to carry a few torque wrenches too :)
I understand people's frustration that they can't carry whatever they like but I also get totally frustrated by the idea of all the drug addicts and 60iq idiots open carrying machetes when my kids are coming home from school. Actually, the latter frustrates me more.
Now I don't live in the US and I hear you guys tolerate more street killing than other parts of the world. I can see the rationale to limit carrying stuff that in the heat of a brawl people can suddenly pick and kill each other with. I see the point of asking people not to bring long fixed blade knives or switchblades on their belt to a pub, a bus or a train station. If you need a tool, pack it away with the rest of your tools and pick it up when you need it, just like the rest. Opening boxes or cutting tape is totally possible with small folders that are legal 99% of the world.

A few years ago, all puukkos and knives were confiscated from our work. I am in the factory doing maintenance, and I use a puukko almost every day for many work tasks. I clean the seal surfaces, crank the seal out of its groove, cut the hoses to the right size and so on. The safety team made a list of all replacement tools that should be used for each work step, and there were a lot of those tools! they proud of their list and said this is a good thing that they could replace puukko with all these tools. but I said, do you realize how crazy this situation is that I have one, one and only tool that can do all these jobs! but now I should have to carry huge array of tools starting with a hacksaw, just because puukko is forbidden for some reason. End well, I can still carry a puukko and do all the necessary work with it, and that's a really good thing, because it's a really versatile tool.

In Canada, Federally speaking, you could legally wear a 7 inch fixed blade knife, or larger even, on your belt in Walmart as long as it’s not concealed. In a backpack is ok too, it’s considered “stowed.”
The type of knife can matter. No switchblade, balisong etc.
intent matters too the knife became an issue, but generally speaking, RCMP will leave you alone if you aren’t a POI already. The law is muddy so other people’s experience may vary.

The law in Canada is intentionally muddy, to allow the police to use their judgment about criminal intent, but if they can’t show criminal intent they can’t win in court if you are ever charged, so never say you are carrying a knife for self-defence because that can be construed as intent to harm someone. Always have an idea of the non-criminal cutting you carry a knife for.

Regarding sharp tools, I have a Fallkniven F1x, a Mora, Bahco Laplander saw, and a Gransfors Bruk axe. All of these tools could be used as a weapon, but then so could a piece of wood that I pick up. I agree that knives should not be worn in populated areas. I have never been stopped and I think the amount of kit carried would explain what I am doing. Not going to be chasing someone with a full pack, sleeping roll, and canteens clattering around. Anyway, it is just a way of further stripping people's rights away.

I also recently read about a man in Sweden that was parting a Deer or a Moose, and he had to drive his son to football practice. The guy put his knife in the sheath and drove his kid, and he got stopped at a traffic stop. The man got fined €3000 but it got dropped to €2700. It's all a bit sad, it's really sad actually.

If your knife is a utility knife, and youre carrying it for that prupose (like a small pocket knife for general utility purposes), then youre fine. Of course carrying a bushcraft knife in a shopping center is not a good purpose.
Of course if youre carrying a tactical knife or a knife that is more purpsoe built to be a weapon, like a karambit etc, then its illegal since those are literally designed to be weapons.

What it really comes down to is whether or not you can convince the police officer that you have a good reason to have a knife with you.

@@DutchBushcraftKnives As far as *actual* Canadian knife laws are considered, there's actually not that many types of knives that are illegal, it's really only gravity knives, automatics and push daggers. The real problem is that the Canadian Border Services Agency is a rogue agency which makes the import of otherwise *legal* knives impossible, due to their truly asinine interpretation of what constitutes a gravity knife. Basically, if it's got a flipper tab or thumb studs, if they can open it part way and then flick it the rest of the way open, they'll call it a gravity knife and confiscate it. Of course, it's not applied evenly either. Knife retailers are perfectly able to import knives with flipper tabs and thumbstuds, but if a regular person tries to purchase a knife through a private sale from outside of Canada and import it, that's when they'll run into trouble.
Beyond that, there's not really any prohibition against carrying knives in public, although it's exceptionally rare to see someone with a fixed blade in public. Legally, non-prohibited knives are considered tools, and so long as you consistently declare that you're carrying a tool and not a weapon, you won't have any trouble.
