For basics, I'm using Pocket Thai Master app. Appreciate your thorough and clear teaching :)

    It may sound daunting to have 44 consonants in three classes, plus 18 vowels but take heart, there are 52 letters in English, 26 times two cases. (Admittedly, the cases don’t affect the pronunciation.)
    Also, just like in Thai, the 5 (or 6 if you count Y) single vowels are combines into many, many diphthongs and triphthongs.

    • @ellefsensbarmyarmy8491
      @ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 3 года назад +2

      44 letters, but only 21 consonant sounds.
      And, unlike English and many other languages, thai vowels are always pronounced in the same way.
      There’s many ways to pronounce “a” depending on the word, but only one way to pronounce “า”.

    • @gaemlinsidoharthi
      @gaemlinsidoharthi 3 года назад

      @@ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 : Comes from using a foreign (Latin mostly) set of characters to represent the language, I suppose. Not to mention where pronunciation has drifted from what was originally spelled (all the “gh” words spring to mind).
      Still, there are ways which give how combinations of the characters are used to represent the various sounds even if they are almost unrecognisable amongst all the foreign spellings and exceptions.
      Better than using hieroglyphs at least. 🙂

      Transliteration of thai into Latin alphabet doesn’t really work.
      Learning thai script is the only way to learn tones and pronunciation etc. It’s still hard to get the tones and pronunciation right, but at least it possible to understand it.
      Thai script looks strange in the beginning, but it’s not that hard. Most people will figure it out within 2-3 weeks if they spend an hour a day working on it

      Learning to read Thai gives you a huge advantage and while slower at first, it will really accelerate your learning and understanding Thai language. You will understand the real Thai sounds and tones, and it helps you to have proper Thai pronunciation. Learning Thai pronunciation this way makes it less likely that you’ll develop bad habits when you speak Thai.

    I really want to know the rules to knowing which 'dt' or 'd' letter to use to make a specific word. It's not like you can write 'dee' (good) with daw-cha-daa, right? You have to use daw-dek. They're not used interchangeably. That's probably the most confusing part for me.

    • @Watdee
      @Watdee 2 года назад +2

      Just like English, you have to memorize how words are spelled. It's more about word origins than rules, so memorizing the spelling is usually simpler than trying to understand why.

      Exactly. One word can have 5 different tones and that will give you 5 different, unrelated, meanings.

    Hello kruu, how can we know when to use the ด or the do-chadaa and ต or tho-pha-thak? Thanks in advance

    • @simonhollad5511
      @simonhollad5511 3 года назад +2

      Well one is 'd' sound and the other is 't' sound

    • @airacheking
      @airacheking 3 года назад +4

      @@simonhollad5511 That wasn’t what she was asking. The original question is valid since they are the exact sounds: ด & ฎ both make the ดอ sound, and ต & ฏ both make the ตอ sound. The answer I have come to learn is that you can only know from learning your roots for words, understanding that words that come from Pali or words that have more ancient/traditional use typically use more ฎ & ฏ so you just need to learn the correct spelling of words as you hear them, which will help you make better educated guesses as you progress.

      Most common words in everyday life use ด and ต . 😄 You will have to memorize a few words that use ฎ and ฏ which is actually quite rare to come across these days.

    Thanks Kun Mod, Great lecture. Let me help you learn English, You said "their are 44 alphabets in Thai" but that is not correct, you should have said "their is 44 consonants in the Thai alphabet" :) Thanks for teaching us !

    I can’t wrap my head around why there are six different Thai symbols that make the t sound. Other symbols are similar. I can pronounce them all by looking at flash cards but. It will take some time to figure out what symbols sound like which Roman letter. Also consonants make different sounds if they are at the beginning of the word compared to the end. This is extremely confusing and not necessary if you ask me. I don’t think I will ever figure out how to read Thai.

      lol, you’re just discovering the basics of the language and you’re declaring some of it ‘not necessary’ lol - I mean yeah it’s weird at first but - English has so many stupid exceptions (I’m English btw) and there is a logical reason for everything in Thai.
