Yeh that would be good. You can download Substance materials (some are free) and import them into Arnold really easily. I got a pretty decent snow one. Still really tough to make snow look good tho!
I would reeeeaaaaaalllly like to have the rest of the tutorial for this. That picture in the thumbnail has a lot more work done on it. Even looks like a vdb displacement. I really feel like this style really needs a vdb, from houdini or something... Does R23 have anything to get closer to that look? Also Am I missing something during the steps? My displacement only goes into a straight line and not on random vertically and horizontally EDIT: I decided to up the steps and BOOM that was the key. Steps is the most important part to get the details. That and the clipping on the shader. Also you will never get the nice look that Lee gets without using VDB files, unfortunately.
Hey there. Do you have any tips on what those refinements and tweaks were to get this looking like you showed us at the start of the video? Those are the elements I'm most curious about. I think it's what makes the image super polished.
Hi, if I want it to spread in all directions (like an explosion), how do I do that? I really don't understand how vector map works. Been trying to figure this out for a few hours now...
First of all, ty for sharing this great technique. :) Second, is there any chance to connect the Voulme shader to a SSS Shader and shade this all in SSS like in your pictures ? Thanks a lot :)
Some say so but I don't know as I don't use Octane but supposedly you can with the new Vectron feature in the latest version but would only support GPU shaders. So no C4D noises.
Great tutorial have tried the Arnold help version and getting further with your technique, But . . Any chance of a scene file, I can't get this quite right, especially the fall off, trying todo this on an older iMac and its so slow, so any help is appreciated.
Make sure you assign a seperate camera for the UVs remember the camera is projecting the UV coordinates. Maybe test the ramp setup with a simple sphere and standard shader to see how it works.
is there one for maya still somewhere? lee grigg's videos are no longer available and i'm havin some trouble with my nodes. none of the maya nodes work as these do in the video. my density and displacement DO NOT directly take direct output from the range or noise nodes in maya....... please help
Hey great tutorial guys ! Having a problem though that I can't seem to google: After I set up a camera to be used for the camera projection and lock it, when I navigate around the editor the camera projection still updates as if the locked camera hasn't been set up. Any ideas ?
Really cool effect. Im new to C4D so theres a lot im trying work out. Im having issues with applying the noise to the volume, when i do it nothing changes in the IPR?
Hey ! I've done this tuts once and it works perfectly, but i tried with an other 3D model and when im getting to this step: put a Arnold mesh volum tags on my model, nothing happens, it doesn't convert to a volume, any help ? I first thought that was my model or something like this but i tried several others and thats the same problem
Is it possible that the New Editor of Arnold works different then the old Network shader? Because the displacement in with the Old Legacy Material and Network Shader is instantly visible whereas in the New Node Editor I could not get it to have that extreme effect. There is also a new node in the Editor called "Arnold Material". Can someone explain to me the difference of the two Shader Networks?
I think that I've might done something wrong. After adding the texture image, I don't get any color. I've added a mars, orange/bron-ish image but it remains black and white. Help, maybe? :D
Thanks for the tutorial! I've followed the instructions, but when I render through arnold I just have completely flat white object without any details - other object with regular material is rendering fine. Does someone have an idea how to fix this
Hi ! Nice tutorial ! But when i'm trying to put the first "Range mode" it says me that it only can be on "default" mode and not "main".. Do you know how i can fix it ? Thx a lot
I tried to replicate this technique in Maya, everything went well but the aiVectorMap didn't give me the same result. Do you have any idea ? Does it have something to do with different axis in C4D and Maya ?
Hi, I followed this great tutorial in Maya and I had a lot of fun figuring out the different possibilitys of volume displacements. But I ran into a problem when I tried to blend the effect with the ramp node. I can't plug the camera projection output into the mix input of the layer rgba. I tried to find the solution for three days but it just doesn't work. It would be great if someone could point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance!
I wonder, because when I use vector map I can clearly see cutout (like some noise values goes rapidly to 0 over and below some y value). I've increased tangent and normal in y axis but it rather stretches it than give extra space to reduce or feather the cutout. Any ideas?
I can not do this effect, I do everything according to the guide, but I have a vector map does not change direction, and the volume is stretched not so far, I did in cinema s24
I don't know if that helps you, but you can use the old version of the Node Editor of Arnold (Legacy) under extensions. With this I am getting somewhere. It seems to be the contrast value of the range Node that is behaving differently than in the new editor...
Yes it is with vectrons (SDF) in 2018.1. You'll have to convert your mesh to a volume first (easy to do in R20) and then you can feed that into vectron shader and displace it, process it, combine with other volumes or pretty much do whatever you imagine through OSL.
@@shawnastrom Ha! I wish it was vector displacement, but, no, It's Signed Distance Fields just like in Arnold, Renderman, OpenGL and everywhere else. There's only so many ways to create surfaces "out of thin air".
Unfortunately not at the moment. As far as I know Arnold is the only render engine that is capable of displacing volumes. This might be possible in Houdini’s Mantra engine or RenderMan maybe.
This my 1st Arnold Tutorial, i had to took a nap to process this 11:18 minutes tutorial. Thank you.
So...I finally get Octane and now you're using Arnold. dafuq lol
Arnold rules!
Look into vectron in octane you can get similar results with way faster renders

Great to hear!

Thanks for all the Arnold tutorials! You have no idea just how much I appreciate you guys for putting out all of this
Wow that’s so amazing
So original. The coolest effect i've seen, big respect
Love this tutorial - Could you possibly do a Part 2 to this and show how best to get the marble paint displacement effect in there?\
So amazing looking. Beautiful stuff. Thanks!
We need this details with redshift c4d ?
Thank you so much for this! Love it!
It's an awesome technique!!
It's pretty sick. I need it know in Redshift :)

In depth tutorial on arnold render setting
dude you are awesome, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Love this -- thanks so much for making this tutorial, and cool shoutout to lee griggs .. love his work.
Any idea how to do this in Octane?
No way. Only if they make work Volume builder voxel rendering in cinem4d.
They making it in 2019 in a few months this feature will be availiable there as well
Use octane for maya

Going to try with different render.

Great tutorial, thank u

When I get to 4:00 when you use C4D Noise, I just don't have it in there? What should I do?
Make sure you have the latest version of Arnold. They added native C4D noise support a while ago.
Thank youuu! Can I animate the camera to ad some movement and if yes which camera should I animate???
do you think that is possible to do it with redshift?
First of all, ty for sharing this great technique. :)
Second, is there any chance to connect the Voulme shader to a SSS Shader and shade this all in SSS like in your pictures ? Thanks a lot :)
Dont think you can just connect shaders to shaders in that way, you need to connect channel to channel, within each shader..

Can an image sequence be used to animate this? If yes then how? Thanks for sharing and thanks if anyone can answer, I am using maya btw..

Can I do this without Arnold or any plugins?
