As a kiwi... Thank you John Oliver for raising the profile of this competition to heights beyond that in New Zealand. We’re having a good laugh about it down here.
Election interference? Yes. Perfectly legal? Yes. It will wind us New Zealanders up, because the Puteketeke is native to both Australia and New Zealand. Love it.
I'm Canadian. I know exactly why I this popped up in my feed. It's because I watched all John's other nonsense on this Bird Election 😂. I mean. If you're going to interfere with an election, not why the bird one?
I would suggest Jon Oliver chose Manitowoc to promote a New Zealand (Aotearoa) bird with a Māori name because Manitowoc is the ancestral name of indigenous Americans who called this area their home. Manitowoc, meaning home of the good spirit, was regarded as a magical place for the mixed bands of Ottowa, Potawatomi, Menominee and Ojibwa people. Kia ora.
Just to clarify something - the winning bird of this contest gets exposure in the NZ media (and now the world’s!), but Forest and Bird fund many different conservation projects, as per their mission - it’s not about all funding going to one species.
@@davincisghost9228 I did notice that 😊 But I was mainly wanting to reassure people worried about the banded dotterel and other endangered bird species that donations don’t just go to the bird of the century (as far as I know). And there’s also other community organisations working alongside them to help all these awesome manu survive and thrive!
I'm from Manitowoc, and was just down by you guys in August! Hiked up Roy's Peak and got to check out Milford Sound, Hooker Valley, and Lake Takepo. Lovely country you guys have down there! Everyone was very friendly as well! Looking forward to visiting again someday.
Last year's winner, Piwauwau, just tweeted "come to Aukland, it will be wild". Piwauwau has demanded recounts in all the wing states. He blames his loss on radical left wing Poo-te-ki-te-kis and the migratory birds that were flown in just for the election. So unfair.
NZ Forest and bird is a wonderful worthy cause to support, and the world is now aware of this because of Jon Oliver! I donated and I hope everyone else will donate as well so that they can continue to fight for these incredible creatures!!! 🐦 🐾🕊🦅🦆🦢🦉🦤🪶🦜
The competition received verified votes from 195 countries! That is every country in the world by some counts & possibly more countries than any public competition has ever before obtained votes from! Impressive result
How cool you all voted for the NZ comp. Bit of fun all round.. I love to watch those birds from different campsights. Their nests are amazing.. on the lake water.
As a Kiwi (I mean the human NZer not the bird....or fruit) I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't even know the Puteketeke existed so thank you John Oliver for extending my knowledge of my own country (which I previously thought was pretty extensive) However I'm upset that this foreign intervention may prevent the bird I have always thought should win hands down every year. That is of course the "Kea" I want to be one in my next life, the only alpine parrot in the world and easily the most intelligent bird of all capable of pulling apart anything that humans have manufactured including unlacing boots while you are asleep and actually wearing them and funnier than the Marx Brothers, John Cleese or Jim Carey. Actually John Oliver would also make a great Kea but I admit there is a strange resemblance there to the Puteketeke.
The Southern crested grebe, as that bird is more commonly known, is also my favourite bird. I often camp by a tranquil lake here in New Zealand and hear the grebes waaarrrrking at each other day and night. They're good value and we're starting to see them spread further up and down the mighty Clutha valley, slowly clawing their way back from endangerment, but it'll be a long haul 👍
As usual Oliver is making a serious point in a comedic fashion. Large countries often interfere with elections in smaller ones, look at US interference in Latin America for the last century.
Yesterday, November 19, 2023 we traveled from Illinois to Manitowoc, Wisconsin to see the Puteketeke billboard. We were devastated to discover that the billboard has been changed out for a Wisconsin Maritime Museum Christmas Tree Ship exhibit ad. John Oliver, Manitowoc, couldn't that Puteketeke billboard up until the end of November? So disappointed!
@dymphnasis - Buggar !! My son works 10 minutes away so came home with a photo. The Christmas displays seem to go up in October these days. Have a lovely Thanks Giving. Cheers (NZ)
probably had to pull it down at the same time as the competition ended to avoid issues with people trying to vote when voting was closed. That is really disappointing for you though, dam! You should email John Oliver's team to express your disappointment, but in a comedy way, you never know, he might find a way to include you & your town in a future stunt if you do
He picked a lot of high traffic areas and he wanted to have at least one in a low traffic area. That's from the "horses mouth". As a fan I have a good idea how he selected that specific small town, he used Google... lol
Poo-tekki-tekki! It makes me think back to the time John was campaigning to have his name on the sewage plant in Danbury, Connecticut, the now world renowned "The John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant". That was some funny sh*t. Now we can only hope the Kiwis don't throw away the votes from outside New Zealand. But I guess it is, technically, election interference, so... 😄. We definitely don't want to ruffle any feathers.
Your pronunciation is close but all four Es sound the same as the first, as in "pen": poo-tekeh-tekeh. (I began learning te reo Māori in 1969, but I'm still not fluent.) I think Oliver chose your town because its name too is unEnglish. He seems to have an obsession with our country, Aotearoa New Zealand - he came here and we treated him well, but this is not a kindness. We'd rather choose our own bird.
Forest and Bird (the competition organisers) have said all votes will count, from anywhere in the world - as long as a valid email address, which is verified (they send you a verification link, after you have voted). We love our birds here in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Most people think that the more awareness of our special winged friends - the better! Several are endangered, and every bit of help and education is great.
If we’re going to have foreign interference in our elections, fine. But before your fall for Oliver’s Australasian fetish, check out the kākāpō. A true NZer with a back beat. Or there’s the kea. One of those will dismantle your car and steal the hub caps the moment you turn your head. They’re locals too, but they’ve picked up some bad habits from visitors - not saying from where, but you can guess. They’re smart as and could easily sub in for the average MAGA Congressperson and leave change. But then there’s my favourite, the fantail - the piwakawaka - friendly as, but in the interest of full disclosure they’re considered a bad omen if they come visit. So, meddle in our elections but you do have more choice than that offered up by that peripatetic Pom, Olliver. Just know that if we have to set up an Electoral College to put a thumb on the scales we will.
As a kiwi... Thank you John Oliver for raising the profile of this competition to heights beyond that in New Zealand. We’re having a good laugh about it down here.

Hello from Manitowoc!
You are Australian I presume

as a bonus its also called Australian crested grebe

Oh? No shit! I need to google that.
I'm trying to be better about indigenious stuff myself, but I'm not very smart lol
I would suggest he chose it for the same reason he chose the Puteketeke. Simply fun to say.
I saw strange things long ago off the shores of Manitowoc that back up your statement.
Kia Ora Bro 🤙😎❤
that's really nice :)

Nobody does hilariously absurd quite like John Oliver! Good for this town and its nice people. I love this idea. GO PUTEKETEKE! 🐦
The people of Manitowoc now know about the Puteketeke and me, a Kiwi, now knows about Manitowoc. Kia Ora John Oliver. :)
I’m so happy watching this
Just to be clear, we still love you John Oliver!
All the Es should be said as “eh”. The emphasis is on Pū. “POO-teh-keh-teh-keh” is the best guidance I can offer. Arohanui o Aotearoa.
It is the Huia for my choice!
Thank you for your Vote

Ha ha as a New Zealander! Native Kiwi I love it. 🎉

Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, the Middle East......

LOL only John Oliver could pull something like this off.
I think John likes, no loves Manitowoc cranes and why he picked Manitowoc.
Because Charlie Berens put Manitowoc on the map!

Why hasn’t Charlie Berens commented on this?!!
I haven't seen any comment from him.
Hilarious!

My guy, the Kiwi, came in second. Where do I go to protest on Jan 6?
Outside American influence in our NZ bird election has stopped our Kiwi from being the most popular bird. 😢
pūteketeke, does it have your vote?

voted kakapo
Not sure I can pronounce Manitowoc, much less Puteketeki...
puteketeke
I voted fir the banded dotteral, very endangered. Poor things don't get a look in for funding now thanks to a flamin american englishman interfering
Well if there is anywhere that people can donate for the other birds, especially endangered ones, please do share. I’m sure a lot of people would.
