Hello Paul. Thank you so very much for making this video. In late March, I had the water pump impeller shaft break and the timing belt jumped several teeth on my wife's 97 Toyota Rav4. I had her car put in the repair shop and was told the car had a blown head gasket and the engine would need to be replaced. I had the car towed back home and then I ran across your video. I have worked on her car for 2 1/2 months and finally finished it this weekend and it runs great! It did not have a blown head gasket! The biggest problem I had was removing the harmonic balancer bolt. I tried several impact wrenches and that bolt wouldn't budge. A friend of mine is a mobile mechanic and he brought over a diesel powered impact wrench and finally removed that bolt. I couldn't have done this work without your video. I even bought that special mountain rachet tool you had in your video and that was a lifesaver on getting to the hard to reach bolts. Thanks again for such a great and detailed video!

Regarding the tensioner spring. According to the manual (10:20) it should measure 46mm. Inside to Inside, see the drawing. However you measure the outside and get 45mm. I got confused as I measured my spring according to your example and got 48mm. I concluded it was faulty and ordered a new one which measured 48mm again. Untill I found the same drawing, as you show in your video, in my Haynes manual and discovered it should be measured inside to inside. Now I have two servicable springs;-) The video was a great help though. Thanks!

Great video. I'm half way through doing mine at the moment (water pump let go.) It's RHD so no battery tray but a brake servo ,that reduces available room, and I just moved the power steering reservoir out of the way without disconnecting.

That is the same technique for replacing the 1997-2001 4 cylinder camry. Always replace the oil pump two seals. Also replace the water pump, crankshaft and camshaft seals every 200K miles.
Thanks for the video Paul, doing this job now. Unfortunately it is a pain to remove and install the engine mount because the mounting bolts are stuffed under the bracket for the ABS pump...

Hi! Can you help? I was driving my rav4 on the highway then all of a sudden engine cut out, engine light came on. When I stopped water was leaking out for about 2 min the stopped. Engine still turns over but doesn't start. The car didn't overheat. water was leaking by the timing belt area
The hardest part is the motor mount bolts. Second hardest is installing the belt correctly. The good news is you won't break your engine if you do it wrong. It's a non-interference engine, meaning the valves will never hit the pistons, even if the timing belt is installed wrong.
Hi i have a question. I have 1996 toyota rav4. I did engine compression car engine was cold i can't start the vehicle anyway it does crank. Cylinder #1 had 135 psi. Cylinder #2 had 120 psi. Cylinder #3 had 145 and the last one had 135 psi. Do you think compression is ok ? Car does have high miles
Just completed the job and my idle is very low almost 500rpm and wants to die out. Is it possible my timing is off and I didn’t align the crankshaft/camshaft correctly?

Thanks kindly!!!
Thanks! Usually the exhaust manifold stays around 500 degrees fahrenheit. The heat shield will be much cooler. I used spray paint on everything, and I don't recommend it. The paint is very weak and dropping a wrench or sneezing near the car will make it fall off. For suspension components I used Rust-Oleum primer, then Rust-Oleum High Performance Enamel industrial strength paint. The primer is great, but I'm not sure what "industry" the paint is for. The pillow making industry perhaps? That paint is trash. For the engine paint I used VHT high temperature engine enamel from Autozone. It's rated for 550 F. Also trash. I had to touch paint my valve cover after dropping a wrench on it. For the exhaust I used Rust-Oleum high heat paint. It's rated for 2000 F and the can says "stops rust". The paint didn't burn off the exhaust but I did get rust spots showing through after just 2 months. For the fender wells I used Raptor 1k pro enamel. It has a picture of a truck on the can so it's tough. That paint is very thin and flakes off easily on flat surfaces, but did great on the textured surfaces by the wheels. Spray paint is cheap and easy, but not durable at all. You can get your parts powder coated, but it's expensive and can only be done to metal parts that can go in an oven. I use purple power engine degreaser. It's just strong soap, then I scrub anything I can reach with a brush, then pressure wash it. Hot water works better than cold water. Everything in the engine bay is waterproof, but be careful spraying near electrical connections. Avoid spraying directly into connectors, the alternator, and the distributor. Washing the battery won't damage it. To clean corroded battery terminals, boil a pot of hot water and dump baking soda in it. Pour the hot baking soda solution over the battery and terminals to neutralize any acid that leaked out of the battery.
When removing Spark Plug Tubes (to reseal the FIPG) what's your preferred method to clean out Spark Plug Wells (w/out debris falling into the block) & best method to remove hardened, old baked-on RTV from Spark Plug Tube threads?
You'll have to thread some bolts into the crank pulley, just long enough to stick out 1 inch past the pulley. They're M8x1.25. Then use a pry bar to keep the crank pulley from turning. Or, use a big oil filter strap wrench on the pulley.

I used VHT engine enamel from the auto parts store. It's a high temperature spray paint for engines. I don't recommend it. The paint is a bit runny and chips easily. I haven't found good spray paint in a can. POR 15 is the good paint, but I haven't tried it yet. por15.com/
Hey man I’m having trouble with my Rav I just had to do the timing belt/water pump but now I am having coolant leak from the return off of the backside of the water pump and in your video you didn’t mention what you did about those you just said it was done after attaching the front hoses @9:00 min in? I’m having the bottom of those two pipes leak :/ any help would be greatly appreciated!

What's the final answer? I bought a '97 a year ago. Timing belt hasn't been changed in more than 110K miles. Am I really worried or not? Owner's manual makes vague reference about this subject. Would appreciate your answer.
I had a massive oil leak from the oil pump seal and got the timing belt (and related nearby parts) done at the same time. Has anyone else noticed a slight smell once the car is running again after the timing belt job? It sort of smells like a belt, but I’m curious if it’s just a temporary thing as all of the new parts and no longer leaking oil operate as they should be.
It's possible some oil spilled on the exhaust pipe and it's burning off now. Go to the car wash and pressure wash the engine and transmission, especially the under side. Be careful not to spray directly at wiring, the distributor, or spark plugs. Drive the car a bit, then check for leaks. New leaks will be easier to find if everything is clean.
Hi Paul, Great video! Do you have the part number for the alternator front pivot bolt? ( the 12mm that is on the right side) I cant find it anywhere.... the head of my bolt is torn so its pretty tough to fasten or take out. thanks
It's at 15:11 in the video. Dorman 917-148 is an aftermarket replacement. It's lower quality than original. If you go to the junkyard you can get the good one.
I’ve always been told that if a timing belt brakes the engine is screwed. You mentioned a broken timing belt won’t bust the engine on this engine. Why is that?
The 3S-FE engine in the RAV4 is a non-interference engine. That means the intake and exhaust valves don't open far enough to be able to hit the piston. They will never reach the piston, even if the belt is installed wrong or broken. Some engines are interference engines, and the valves can hit the pistons if something goes wrong with the belt. A lot of engines with variable valve timing are interference engines. With newer cars, manufacturers got a bit smarter and started using timing chains instead of belts with the interference engines. Chains last much longer than belts, and you don't run into a situation where you accidentally destroy your engine trying to do some maintenance.
Just follow the steps and you'll be fine. The good news is putting the timing belt on wrong won't break your engine, because it's a non-interference engine.
@@spinningwheelsroadtravels5122 Yup. Every source I've checked says the 3S-FE is non-interference. I've also turned the crank several revolutions with the timing belt off with no problems.

@@brockturner3112 I've found that switching the type of fluid in an old car like this is generally a bad idea. The old seals can't handle stuff like that. I have a new power steering pump and hoses, so I just hope the rack doesn't start leaking.
@@LabCoatPaul idk, I know you know what your doing. But with our 00 ES300, 04 GX470, 98 camry, and 02 Solara switching to atf rejuvenated the ps pumps. They were whining and/or leaking, because of previous owners going to quick lube and having the systems flushed with Universal powersteering fluid. Putting atf back in the system helped all of them. However, none of our Toyotas have been as unreliable and annoying as that rav4.... So your probably right 🤗
I degreased and pressure washed the wiring harness and removed all the old tape. Then I re-wrapped it in violet 3M super 33+ electrical tape, 1 section at a time so I wouldn't get the wires mixed up. It took 6 hours to do.
If your timing belt only lasts 3 days, something is wrong. Turn all your pulleys by hand to see if there is a problem. Camshaft, idler, tensioner, water pump, and oil pump. Inspect the pulleys to make sure the teeth aren't damaged and don't have any sharp edges. After setting up the timing belt and tensioner, try starting the engine with the timing cover off. Look to see if anything unusual is happening.
Your videos have been really helpful. At the 9:53 mark, you use a tool to help you torque the cam gear down. Could you give some information on that tool?
I made that tool. It's just a piece of metal with 2 bolts sticking out to hold the cam gear. If you have the valve cover off, you can hold the camshaft with a 15/16" or 24mm wrench
Would you recommend this autozone kit over the aisin kit? I’m pretty lost with ordering parts, but I’m confident I can do the work. I’ve been told to do the aisin kit but your advice seems reliable as well… help a guy out please.
If you plan on driving the car a long time, go for the Aisin kit. Original quality has been proven to last over 20 years. Autozone? who knows, probably not that long.

Yes. It's ok to start the engine with the timing cover off and the right side motor mount off. Just don't drive it like that.

For suspension components I used Rust-Oleum primer, then Rust-Oleum High Performance Enamel industrial strength paint. The primer is great, but I'm not sure what "industry" the paint is for. The pillow making industry perhaps? That paint is trash.
For the engine paint I used VHT high temperature engine enamel from Autozone. It's rated for 550 F. Also trash. I had to touch paint my valve cover after dropping a wrench on it.
For the exhaust I used Rust-Oleum high heat paint. It's rated for 2000 F and the can says "stops rust". The paint didn't burn off the exhaust but I did get rust spots showing through after just 2 months.
For the fender wells I used Raptor 1k pro enamel. It has a picture of a truck on the can so it's tough. That paint is very thin and flakes off easily on flat surfaces, but did great on the textured surfaces by the wheels.
Spray paint is cheap and easy, but not durable at all. You can get your parts powder coated, but it's expensive and can only be done to metal parts that can go in an oven.
I use purple power engine degreaser. It's just strong soap, then I scrub anything I can reach with a brush, then pressure wash it. Hot water works better than cold water.
Everything in the engine bay is waterproof, but be careful spraying near electrical connections. Avoid spraying directly into connectors, the alternator, and the distributor. Washing the battery won't damage it.
To clean corroded battery terminals, boil a pot of hot water and dump baking soda in it. Pour the hot baking soda solution over the battery and terminals to neutralize any acid that leaked out of the battery.
When removing Spark Plug Tubes (to reseal the FIPG) what's your preferred method to clean out Spark Plug Wells (w/out debris falling into the block) & best method to remove hardened, old baked-on RTV from Spark Plug Tube threads?

You'll have to thread some bolts into the crank pulley, just long enough to stick out 1 inch past the pulley. They're M8x1.25. Then use a pry bar to keep the crank pulley from turning. Or, use a big oil filter strap wrench on the pulley.

I used VHT engine enamel from the auto parts store. It's a high temperature spray paint for engines. I don't recommend it. The paint is a bit runny and chips easily. I haven't found good spray paint in a can. POR 15 is the good paint, but I haven't tried it yet. por15.com/

Hey man I’m having trouble with my Rav I just had to do the timing belt/water pump but now I am having coolant leak from the return off of the backside of the water pump and in your video you didn’t mention what you did about those you just said it was done after attaching the front hoses @9:00 min in? I’m having the bottom of those two pipes leak :/ any help would be greatly appreciated!

If I may comment, this video skipped over removing the whole water pump housing, which is a lil tricky, so I ended up leaving the orig. housing in ... no biggie. What's the final answer? I bought a '97 a year ago. Timing belt hasn't been changed in more than 110K miles. Am I really worried or not? Owner's manual makes vague reference about this subject. Would appreciate your answer.
I had a massive oil leak from the oil pump seal and got the timing belt (and related nearby parts) done at the same time. Has anyone else noticed a slight smell once the car is running again after the timing belt job? It sort of smells like a belt, but I’m curious if it’s just a temporary thing as all of the new parts and no longer leaking oil operate as they should be.
It's possible some oil spilled on the exhaust pipe and it's burning off now. Go to the car wash and pressure wash the engine and transmission, especially the under side. Be careful not to spray directly at wiring, the distributor, or spark plugs. Drive the car a bit, then check for leaks. New leaks will be easier to find if everything is clean.

Hi Paul, Great video! Do you have the part number for the alternator front pivot bolt? ( the 12mm that is on the right side) I cant find it anywhere.... the head of my bolt is torn so its pretty tough to fasten or take out. thanks
It's at 15:11 in the video. Dorman 917-148 is an aftermarket replacement. It's lower quality than original. If you go to the junkyard you can get the good one.

I’ve always been told that if a timing belt brakes the engine is screwed. You mentioned a broken timing belt won’t bust the engine on this engine. Why is that?
The 3S-FE engine in the RAV4 is a non-interference engine. That means the intake and exhaust valves don't open far enough to be able to hit the piston. They will never reach the piston, even if the belt is installed wrong or broken.
Some engines are interference engines, and the valves can hit the pistons if something goes wrong with the belt. A lot of engines with variable valve timing are interference engines.
With newer cars, manufacturers got a bit smarter and started using timing chains instead of belts with the interference engines. Chains last much longer than belts, and you don't run into a situation where you accidentally destroy your engine trying to do some maintenance.

Just follow the steps and you'll be fine. The good news is putting the timing belt on wrong won't break your engine, because it's a non-interference engine.

@@brockturner3112 I've found that switching the type of fluid in an old car like this is generally a bad idea. The old seals can't handle stuff like that.
I have a new power steering pump and hoses, so I just hope the rack doesn't start leaking.
@@LabCoatPaul idk, I know you know what your doing. But with our 00 ES300, 04 GX470, 98 camry, and 02 Solara switching to atf rejuvenated the ps pumps. They were whining and/or leaking, because of previous owners going to quick lube and having the systems flushed with Universal powersteering fluid. Putting atf back in the system helped all of them. However, none of our Toyotas have been as unreliable and annoying as that rav4.... So your probably right 🤗

Nope. The entire timing belt job can be done without changing the oil.
That is not the left front wheel. That is the right front or passenger front.
How did you do the pink wrap on the loom? Is it just electrical tape?
I degreased and pressure washed the wiring harness and removed all the old tape. Then I re-wrapped it in violet 3M super 33+ electrical tape, 1 section at a time so I wouldn't get the wires mixed up. It took 6 hours to do.

If your timing belt only lasts 3 days, something is wrong. Turn all your pulleys by hand to see if there is a problem. Camshaft, idler, tensioner, water pump, and oil pump. Inspect the pulleys to make sure the teeth aren't damaged and don't have any sharp edges. After setting up the timing belt and tensioner, try starting the engine with the timing cover off. Look to see if anything unusual is happening.

Your videos have been really helpful. At the 9:53 mark, you use a tool to help you torque the cam gear down. Could you give some information on that tool?
I made that tool. It's just a piece of metal with 2 bolts sticking out to hold the cam gear. If you have the valve cover off, you can hold the camshaft with a 15/16" or 24mm wrench
Can someone please tell me if the timing belt and serpentine belt is the same thing in the rav??
No. A serpentine belt is outside the timing cover and drives accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor.

Would you recommend this autozone kit over the aisin kit? I’m pretty lost with ordering parts, but I’m confident I can do the work. I’ve been told to do the aisin kit but your advice seems reliable as well… help a guy out please.
If you plan on driving the car a long time, go for the Aisin kit. Original quality has been proven to last over 20 years. Autozone? who knows, probably not that long.
