I made an appointment with Stanley Steamer to have them clean the travertine floors. They were hesitant because they are porous. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated!
No, of course not. Sorry, I was being sarcastic and taking a dig at Stanley for not knowing how to clean travertine. It sounds like the person they sent to you was new and didn’t know what they were doing. A professional with the right equipment and experience should have no problem cleaning travertine. But the right equipment is essential because you need high heat and pressure to get travertine really clean. I haven’t seen any consumer grade tools that can do the job.
Great video! I'll add that we used to do clear sealing, but have switched over to color sealing because of issues like the mismatched patch jobs, etc. I know each cleaner has their own opinion/experience with it, but we personally like it the best :)
I am certainly glad I watched this. I’ve never had a tile floor in my house before. I have two in my current house. I cannot get the floors clean let alone the grout. I didn’t even realize that you could have someone come in and steam clean them. I will be finding someone in my area to do this. Then I can deal with the areas where I know I need new grout.
One of the best videos on this topic I've seen. Grout and sticky floors = those next level issues of cleaning. I assumed that vacuuming was the best first step, I use a cordless for it.
As someone who owns a janitorial supply store, you are right on. The one tip you missed was to read the dilution rate for your cleaner. I have to make sure I tell some of my customers to not put more cleaner in because your floor is extra dirty. I tell them they may have to go over it a second time. because you will leave a film on the floor which will become a dirt magnet. And rinse with plain water is always a good option. And never mop a waxed floor with hot water.
Applause ! You done good. I can tell you are a genuine pro. The only exception I would add here is that it is OK to mop your tile with a good alkaline cleaner if your grout is not sealed. How do you know if the grout has been sealed? Well if you have to ask, then you know that it has not been sealed. An alkaline cleaner will keep the tile cleaner longer but will have no effect on the grout as you have well illustrated. PH Neutral cleaner is only used if the grout has a sealer on it. That is because alkaline or acid based cleaners will damage the sealer. Well done video.
Just moved into my first house and the previous owners have this most basic ceramic tile in the bathroom and kitchen that just feel like I cannot get them clean. This is why. Thank you!!!!!!!
I'm always watching videos for cleaning information. And this was by far the best for tile floors!! I learned so much, now I can't wait to try out what I learned!
WOW! I had no idea the difference in every day 'floor cleaning' and a professional cleaning. I've seen it with carpet cleaners, but never tile etc. This is great information! TFS! I SUBSCRIBED!
I use my Bissell floor machine about 1 month($125.00 Amazon) and it works UNBELIEVABLY well. No mop wringing, fast dry floors, no bending. I even use it on the the vinyl "wood" flooring. Make sure to seal your grout when it's clean which u should reapply about 2-3 years. My bathroom tile is white with white grout. Looks as good as the day it was installed. Plus, can use natural products in the Bissel (except vinegar) so no chemicals.
@@ohboy2592 OMG I screwed up. It's a Hover, the basic model. I keep waiting for it to die so I can get the upgraded model which lets u control the vacuum. I do have the Bissell Green Machine which we use for the cars and upholstery. Anyway, both are great. I've had the Hover for 3 yrs. We also have a Eufy auto vacuum which we run every day. Once a week I use the swifter to pick up the spills and dog, um "accidents". We have a Pom, nuf said! Seriously, I can't tell you how many times I have used the Hover and loaned it out. Many times over the investment. But I'm guessing that just about any floor cleaner will do as long as it sucks the water off the floor. They're all pretty good. Hope this helps. Again, you MUST seal the grout at the beginning, or at least after ur first good cleaning, and then again reseal about every 2-3 years depending on traffic.
I also looked at reviews for floor machines. But I can tell you that they all work basically the same. I think most ppl don't read the full directions. "they leak" but they don't! You must understand how they work. Of course there is water on the brushes, of course the tank fills and u must empty it and wash out the machine after using. I keep it in the garage, so it "leaks" a bit after cleaning. That's the water that leaks from the brushes. Take care of ur equipment and it will take care of you.
I have been using water vinegar and Clorox bleach to clean my porcelain floors for 20 years and have some missing grout. Thanks for this video, it was illuminating.
Great video. One thing I did not hear you cover is the common problem of black mildew... especially in bathrooms and sinks. Once this takes root it is near impossible to clean. The problem being that the grout absorbs things like hair conditioner... and these stay there and essentially rot Sealer can help if applied to fresh grout. But a better prevention is to use Epoxy Grout in all new installations. This grout will never absorb water, and also resists degradation by acid cleaners
Yeap, I'm a pro house cleaner; once mold gets into grout, the battle lost and the grout has to be totally replaced. IF you don't do it soon enough, the mold gets behind the tiles and well... the whole thing should be ripped out and redone. Tis why you're supposed to reseal every 6 months with a lot of sealants...which no one does.
@@OgdenM For years, I kept thinking that I could “solve” the mildew problem if I just cleaned it correctly. A corollary problem is that people are unaware that hair conditioner is such great food for mildew in showers.
I cracked up with the maxi pad comparison! Great info, thank you for this information! I've been cleaning for decades, never understood there was so much to the floor treatment.
Learned a lot, thank you, very informative. This is the first tiled kitchen I have ever had, always had vinyl or in 🇦🇺 we call it Lino, I can honestly say, I prefer Lino. Much easier to clean, it is forgiving when you drop dishes, whereas tiles aren’t, you invariably crack or chip the tile.
I prefer linoleum and vinyl too. It's easier to install, easier to clean, and it comes in a wide variety of patterns and colors. But it's ubiquity in the middle of the last century made it common and ordinary and people always want things to be shiny and luxurious. It's making a comeback though because it's more environmentally friendly than almost any other type of flooring.
I did as suggested vacuuming very well first, then using Bona Cleaner (letting it sit for 15-20 minutes), then scrubbing, and wiping with several clean rags with lightly wet, very hot water. My bathroom is tiled with VERY small tiles and grout lines. I think it did an overall good job, but think it will need a steamer/extractor to clean very well. Which steamer/extractor do you recommend for home use, that is somewhat economical?
When we bought our house, we ordered the kitchen tile (which was a light color) with dark grout. I still clean the floor regularly, but in 24 years, the grout has never looked dirty.
Domestic Goddess with OCD (obsessive cleaning disorder) here - I do vacuum my tiles every day. I mop every day too, with a microfibre mop and a ph neutral product. My grout gets black in a week so I get down on my knees and scrub it clean. I obviously need an extraction cleaner - so my OCD can reach totally insane levels 🤪
A lot of people in the comments have recommended the Bissell Crosswave so I bought one and made a video about the results that I got: ruclips.net/video/0kdrvRYT6Yk/видео.html
@@businessacc179 It should be sealed. But while sealer will make the grout easier to clean it doesn't prevent grout from getting dirty it protects it from getting stained.
@@HowToCleanLikeAPro your video was great! Helped me see how sealing will help and also the limitations of sealant...we have new tile in our new build home and are getting it sealed this week! Also the showers and backsplash grout. Whatever we can do to extend the life of our beautiful new tile 🤩

hi- I have a newish house, 18 months old, and I only have some mild to moderate stains on my grout in-between the stove to sink, in front of the fridge and around the island. You nailed it when you said half of the issue is the way you clean the floor. I am using a cleaner you said was good, glad to hear! My question is, since I have such a small area, not sure it's not worth hiring a pro or even renting equipment, so, what are my other options? I see people using toilet bowl cleaner, baking soda & peroxide but I want to use something that is non damaging to grout. Then once I get the stain out, I'll want to seal it so I'll need a recommendation for a sealer, too please. Thanks for the video and all the edu!!!!
One thing that you didn't mention, that I suspect is another reason grout and floors in general get so dirty, I think, is because of the roughness. I think when you're walking on unsealed grout lines, it's like walking on sandpaper or a nail file. It rubs the dirt off of your shoes just like that would. This is especially true on bathroom floors that have those little one inch ceramic tiles.
@@HowToCleanLikeAPro That's what I suspect the case is, in my bathroom, anyway. It's a pink 60's bathroom with the little pink and white checkerboard tiles. It constantly gets filthy even though I wash it all the time with a Bissell Crosswave and a steam mop. The dirt and crud just seems to appear out of nowhere, even just a few hours after I've vacuumed and washed it. I'm thinking about dowsing the whole thing in toilet bowl cleaner and scrubbing the hell out of it with a brush. Not nearly enough people make videos on how to clean this type of floor tile. All I ever see is videos on how to clean the large white kitchen tiles like you have in this video. Those are easy compared to the small ones.
Great video ,my friend! Just a note though. When you refer to ceramic, what you are actually referring to is porcelain. Ceramic is very porous and weak and is therefore used almost exclusively on walls. Porcelain is non porous, strong and used on floors and walls. Im a long time tilesetter and wish more people knew your cleaning tips! Thx
I don't know where you're from, but where I live there is plenty of ceramic tile in use as flooring. It's glazed and fired just like porcelain so it's non-porous. It's easy to identify when it chips and cracks because you can see that the tile, under the glaze, is red/brown not white as porcelain would be. Plus all porcelain is ceramic but not all ceramic is porcelain. When I say ceramic I'm referring to all clay tiles that have been glazed and fired.
I can imagine a cleaner's horror when he does a good job only to find that someone used dark grout everywhere and now the floor looks worst than when it was dirty.
I would call you immediately if you were in the SF Bay Area--lol. I've watched six gazillion vids trying to find the best way to clean my '50's style pink and black 1" square floor tiles and yours is the best I've seen--by far. I shall get a bottle of Bona S,T& L cleaner and Stone Pro sealer at my earliest convenience to add to my collection of floor cleaners. (I do use Bona on my hardwood floors). Fortunately, my bathroom floor isn't very large. I'll let you know how it turns out--I'm not even sure what the original color of the grout is! Thanks for the great tips!

Geeez.... i wish homes bought would come with some training for cleaning the materials they used in the build.. and the history lol.. wish we knew this 20 years ago! This was soo informative. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything which majority cleaners don’t even know how to explain to you other than, “that’s just gunna have to be the way it is” Glad to know the solutions for different circumstances!
Thanks! Glad I could help
I don't know why this video was recommended to me... but I found it thoroughly interesting and informative. I don't even have tile flooring in my home.
Maybe you can put it to use in the future
I made an appointment with Stanley Steamer to have them clean the travertine floors. They were hesitant because they are porous. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated!
Oh yes, we must steer clear of all those porous, porous travertine floors
Well crap! I am going to have to put new flooring through the house!
How do I get the floors clean?
No, of course not. Sorry, I was being sarcastic and taking a dig at Stanley for not knowing how to clean travertine. It sounds like the person they sent to you was new and didn’t know what they were doing. A professional with the right equipment and experience should have no problem cleaning travertine. But the right equipment is essential because you need high heat and pressure to get travertine really clean. I haven’t seen any consumer grade tools that can do the job.
@@HowToCleanLikeAPro somehow sarcasm isn’t funny on the web!
Nice effort. I've had tilers tell me to use vinegar to clean tiled floors. Mmmmm. Thanks for the straight up.
Great video! I'll add that we used to do clear sealing, but have switched over to color sealing because of issues like the mismatched patch jobs, etc. I know each cleaner has their own opinion/experience with it, but we personally like it the best :)
What do you charge a sq ft
I am totally the OCD weirdo that vacuums the tile floor daily😂😂
This video is so validating for me. Lol
When he said that, I was like, I can't be the only one! So hello fellow every day vacuumer!
@@carolyncruz6881 hello😁😁
So much good sense, amassed by number people who think diluted bleach is the answer to every floor cleaning
Glad it was helpful!
One of the best videos on this topic I've seen. Grout and sticky floors = those next level issues of cleaning. I assumed that vacuuming was the best first step, I use a cordless for it.
Thanks!
And never mop a waxed floor with hot water.
i always rinse and repeat with my mop or cloth 2 or 3 times , i actually prefer a cloth
He is a better version of science teacher of RUclips
You are so clear with your explanations! The context really helps. Thank you.
You’re welcome
No idea how or why this was suggested but what an excellent, clear and professional presentation!
RUclips knows what you need
Thank you!
Just moved into my first house and the previous owners have this most basic ceramic tile in the bathroom and kitchen that just feel like I cannot get them clean. This is why. Thank you!!!!!!!
Your welcome
I'm always watching videos for cleaning information. And this was by far the best for tile floors!! I learned so much, now I can't wait to try out what I learned!
Thanks!
Great advice. Consumers can not go wrong with any of the content discussed.
I've always vacuumed my floors. Glad to see I'm doing it right ✅
You are the most knowledgeable of grout. Thank you so much. This has helped me understand wha to do and not to do. 👍👍
I LOVE YOUR BACKGROUND! It made me smile the whole time I was watching your video
Thanks! Glad I could make you smile
Yes I think so too
Thanks
WOW! I had no idea the difference in every day 'floor cleaning' and a professional cleaning. I've seen it with carpet cleaners, but never tile etc. This is great information! TFS! I SUBSCRIBED!
Thanks!
Wish I could find a guy like you in my area!! My floors need you very badly!!😃
He's out there. You'll find him one day!
I hardly ever leave comments.... Excellent video... Answers lots of questions and doubts.
Thanks for taking the time.
What bissell model do you have? I’ve been looking for one that scrubs and picks up the water. Many reviews say they are poor when used on tile.
Gee, could you please let me know the name of the Bissell machine. Thanks so much!
That’s definitely the way to go
@@ohboy2592 OMG I screwed up.
Glad I could shine a light
Great video. One thing I did not hear you cover is the common problem of black mildew... especially in bathrooms and sinks. Once this takes root it is near impossible to clean. The problem being that the grout absorbs things like hair conditioner... and these stay there and essentially rot
Sealer can help if applied to fresh grout. But a better prevention is to use Epoxy Grout in all new installations. This grout will never absorb water, and also resists degradation by acid cleaners
Yes! Epoxy is like a miracle
@@OgdenM
For years, I kept thinking that I could “solve” the mildew problem if I just cleaned it correctly. A corollary problem is that people are unaware that hair conditioner is such great food for mildew in showers.
Your video is very informative and educational. We enjoyed watching you give the greatest detailed presentation of grout cleaning. Thank you ...
I cracked up with the maxi pad comparison! Great info, thank you for this information! I've been cleaning for decades, never understood there was so much to the floor treatment.
You’re welcome

No argument from me 👍😊
I did as suggested vacuuming very well first, then using Bona Cleaner (letting it sit for 15-20 minutes), then scrubbing, and wiping with several clean rags with lightly wet, very hot water.
The key word here being “looked.”
Great video. My new house has epoxy grout. It cleans so easy as non porous.
That's great! I wish it was all epoxy!
So that’s permanent? Perfect! One and done ✅
You are a wealth of knowledge and funny. Enjoyed your video. Keep up the great work.
Great video! The 10x between each level on the scale was informative, ty
Thanks! It took some time to put together
Your explanation on this is amazing. Thank you ❤
Domestic Goddess with OCD (obsessive cleaning disorder) here - I do vacuum my tiles every day.
Why not get it sealed?
@@businessacc179 It should be sealed. But while sealer will make the grout easier to clean it doesn't prevent grout from getting dirty it protects it from getting stained.
@@HowToCleanLikeAPro your video was great! Helped me see how sealing will help and also the limitations of sealant...we have new tile in our new build home and are getting it sealed this week! Also the showers and backsplash grout. Whatever we can do to extend the life of our beautiful new tile 🤩
Glad I could help!

Maxi pad mops lol 😂 amazing video as well
Thanks!
I´m only watching this, because I´m planning on mopping my floor. Last time was 10-15 years ago, so getting it spotless wouldn´t make sense with so much time in between.
But I like the way you think, and the sober logic you apply.
10 - 15 years? Why start now?
@@HowToCleanLikeAPro Good one. I need a new Hoover, so while browsing I guess I went from hoover to shop vac to extractor.
So why not find a use to justify my upcoming purchase :) Does a Numatic George sound good to you?
The worst extractor is better than the best mop. For the price, I think George would be decent extractor.
SOOOOOO much good info here....thanks! And are you aware that your voice is absolutely perfect as a video presenter? And you are a cutie, too!!
Thank you!
This was surprisingly educational. I was glued to the video the whole time. Take my upvote. And yes, he does look a bit like Boris Johnson.
That’s one of the reasons I’m ripping out every tile from my house. Grout is from the devil.
Lol fr 😂
I always hear people say they're going to rip out all of their carpet. Now it's their tile. Wood has its drawbacks as does laminate. Pretty soon we're going to be back to dirt floors

I love my tile always shiny, just wipe and walk like you're on glass
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Best advice on the net.period.
Grout lines are the worst! I specifically chose dark grey tiles so i could have already dark grout lines lol
But then your grout gets dirty and you don't notice it so you don't clean so you aways have dirty grout
I had dirty grout in my bathroom for 15 yrs. Tried everything. Bar keeps friend powder cleanser and a stiff wet brush. Then mop. Looks great
Wow. Learned something new today. Interesting!!
Glad to hear it!
I like this guys haircut! He pulls it off well makes me believe he knows what he’s talking about when he’s talking about grout!
True story! Keep that shaggy look I dig it!
hi- I have a newish house, 18 months old, and I only have some mild to moderate stains on my grout in-between the stove to sink, in front of the fridge and around the island.
Hello how are you doing 👋👋👋
For the topic, this is a very engaging, informative and even entertaining video!
That could be.
Thank you for explaining this. I figure most of us have just been guessing and picking cleaners because we like the smell. lol
What do you think about the Bissell Crosswave vacuuming mop?
That's what I have. I run it without water first.
I just made a video about it: ruclips.net/video/0kdrvRYT6Yk/видео.html
You are a profssional, that's clear!
I did'nt know there's such a philosophy in cleaning the floors...
Hands down best video on the subject! To top it off, great head of hair!!!
I can imagine a cleaner's horror when he does a good job only to find that someone used dark grout everywhere and now the floor looks worst than when it was dirty.
And then you're on your back foot trying to explain the situation to the client
Can you recommend a n extraction mop/cleaner we can buy to use instead of a mop?
