I love how the announcers just pity Orlovsky going out of bounds. “Poor guy, he didn’t even know.” That was the winless Lions, one of the most pathetic teams ever.
On that play, does #69 for Minnesota (the closest guy to Orlovsky when he stepped out) get credit for a sack? If so, it's the easiest 2 point he'll ever score.
2:13 For everyone asking what happened here, the coach, Chuck Pagano, out-coached himself. The play was based on something the Patriots had done a few times, which was send out the punting team only to then pull them off the field and send the offense back on. The Colts were trying to make it look like they were doing that, hoping that the Patriots would start to substitute their defense back on the field. Then the Colts could snap the ball and catch the Patriots with 12 men on the field, giving them the first down. The plan was that if the Patriots started substituting, the makeshift QB would go under center, which would be the signal to the makeshift center to snap the ball. If the Patriots didn’t substitute, then the Colts would take the delay of game penalty. The problem was right before the play, Chuck Pagano said to the makeshift QB, if they don’t substitute, why don’t you see if you can draw them offsides and we can get the first down that way. The problem was he forgot that the makeshift QB going under center was the signal to the makeshift center to snap the ball. And he didn’t tell the makeshift center about the change. So when the makeshift QB saw that the Patriots didn’t buy that the Colts were substituting and didn’t start to substitute themselves, he went under center to see if he could get the Patriots to jump offsides. But the makeshift center assumed him going under center meant that the Patriots had bought the fake and had started substituting, so he snapped the ball to get the 12 men on the field penalty. And the rest, as they say, is history. Also worth noting that even if they had gotten the Patriots to substitute and gotten the 12 men on the field penalty, the Colts didn’t line up in a legal formation, so it still would have all been for naught. Pretty bad coaching on every aspect of the play for the Colts. 8:28 This has been said by someone else as well, but it’s worth noting that the butt fumble was just the middle touchdown of a span of three touchdowns in 52 seconds for the Patriots, with touchdowns scored on offense, defense, and special teams. Total breakdown by the Jets. If memory serves, the Jets actually won the game if you don’t count those 52 seconds.
The Jets lost the butt fumble game - even if you discount those three touchdowns. That minute made a 7-0 game 28-0; the final was 49-19. (I suppose you could say the Jets won the 2nd half 16-14.)
Matt Ferragamo if it’s in the end zone the other team doesn’t have to touch it You never see it because it’s almost impossible for the opposing team to run the entire length of the field and touch the ball in the end zone without the other team having already caught it
@@ScarredBert um, wrong. If the ball rolls into the end zone but doesnt go out of bounds, it is a live ball to which both teams have the right to challenge for. If the Bill's pick it up, and take a knee, it is a touchback. If the Jets pick it up, it is a TD. Either way, if the Bills dont wanna concede even more points, they HAVE to pick up the ball.
That Colts play is truly legendary. Most of these other plays involve terrible player execution, complete situational mis-reads, or poor coaching decisions. That Colts play manages to combine all of those fuck-up causes into a literal "wtf just happened" moment. I, as a Luck era Colts fan, was lucky enough to catch this moment live and it was great. Nope but the announcers were right. It was suppose to caught the Patriots off guard and maybe have a player jump offside. If that didnt work, they'd just punt it after a delay of game penalty
The plan was for the ball to not be snapped, use a hard count to draw the pats offsides. The center didn’t get the memo and snapped the ball, which surprised Whalen and led to his clobbering.
They also were trying to get the Patriots to have 12 men on the field--the players running to the sideline was supposed to make New England think that the offense was going to run back onto the field and they were going to catch them in a substitution infraction.
from the perspective of someone who's relatively new to the NFL scene, it would be nice to see some of these underdog teams get better coaches or players (whichever of the two are causing the problems) and see them rise above the current top tier teams, the titans got a shot in the super bowl in 2000 and lost, the bears got theirs in 2006 and lost, the cardinals in 2009 and lost, the bengals in 2022 and lost, etc. we gotta change this, the chiefs and the 49ers can't keep getting to the top
