You're right, he doesn't swear very often. Only other time I'd heard it actually was old footage from 'Falling into Infinity' when he talks about the upcoming show going to 'suck' because he's 'not in the fucking mood'.
Thank you for this video! Great capture of the cool performance! Now the album "Terminal Velocity" is out and this song "Glassy-Eyed Zombies" and "Happy Song" became new examples that John Petrucci composed, Mike Mangini played the drums first (at the G3 shows) and Mike Portnoy played later (for the album)!
John petrucci dream theater is a powerful band if you ever in town in eny city big or small man John you love to shred that guitar keep on rocking those amazing songs okay so that this virus can end soon okay Alex
When John is introducing Mike Mangini at the start of this recording, he calls him 'my paisan'. I didn't know what that meant (and I'm still not sure), but looking it up on Google, it seems 'paisan' is an Italian term for 'buddy', 'mate', 'brother', etc.
*It's my time to shine* You are kinda right! In Italy small towns are called "paese", and people living in these "paesi" are the "paesani". As an extension you could just use "paesani" to refer to people coming from the same country, se he's definitely referring to the fact that they have both italian ancestors (even though they do not come from the same italian region), so they come from the same country, thus paesani. It is a term quite used here ^^
@@wildandrumchannel3063 Portnoy played this section way better in solo album. MM’s groove is not any good and it’s about chemistry as we(fans) always mention. Listen this part back to back, you’ll see what am I talking about
Jim, I am glad someone else said this - as much as I like the energy and simplicity (and lower band mate costs!) of a trio format; a melodic guitarist like Petrucci really needs his sound laid over something like keys or at least another guitarist on rich chords.
If there was one thing I could critique about his writing, is, it's hard to hear the underlying chord progressions when he's the only melody instrument, i.e., no Jordan Rudess covering the rhythm guitar parts. He definitely writes his passages with the chords in mind, but when you hear a song like this for the first time, it's hard to follow the progression. Especially if you can't really hear the bass (he def plays louder when he's doing G3, as opposed to when he's playing in DT.) And with Mangini not being as dynamic a drummer as say, Portnoy, he doesn't emphasize the downbeats all that well (imo), which if he did, might make it easier for your ear to follow the rhythmic changes, since they usually follow the chord changes to some degree. But this song perked me up right from the start, which very few of his compositions have done for me lately. Def a cool song, but gonna take several listens to be able to "grasp" it.
I agree! The only one I can remember (of the “great” guitarists) that has another guitarist live is Steve Vai. I don’t know if it is about cost as said here, “ego” of some kind or simply to minimize the work. But i’m SO sure there are amazing musicians that would grab that task in a heartbeat and nail it, like his “musical sons” Jim Gillette and Marco Sfogli.
🇺🇸 The only thing I have never understood about Petrucci (and I always speak with great affection and admiration) is his lack of attention to the rendering of his solo songs in live, another guitarist (a la Dave Weiner) would be enough to push with the sides and supports when keyboards need it and the quality would be truly excellent! Who knows!
Music (or let's say guitar playing in this case) is not just about who is technically better (btw Petrucci wins for me in this section) or whatsoever but sometimes less is more. It's about the feeling and it's subjective. Both are great in their own way imo.
nothing against @MIkeMangini, but playing the new songs with him, and when was time to record the album @JohnPetrucci came back to his element with @mikePortnoy
Yes it’s now confirmed ( for the trillionth time ) Mangini plays drum very good 😌...........(sure?) yes yes say that......but..........Portnoy creates awesome music with the drum live! Nobody reaches his levels
Portnoy's first time playing with John Petrucci after leaving DT was on Terminal Velocity. MP may have played on that album, but Petrucci's been playing this song and Happy Song (also titled Cloud 10) at G3 since 2012 I think. Mangini was playing this song live far before Portnoy was even considered to return on Petrucci's solo album. This recording is from 2018, 2 years before Terminal Velocity. And John said himself that just because Portnoy was on the album doesn't mean Portnoy will be returning to Dream Theater. So no, Portnoy's not here. Mike Mangini is.
Yo what? It's just shorter and it basically sounds like the second half where Portnoy breaks into full double bass, and without the fills at the end (again, it's a lot shorter here). I personally like the way he ended it at the Credicard Hall show in Sao Paulo from 2012.
When you found out that Petrucci himself already gave spoilers on his new album
Petrucci's stage presence has improved a lot over the years since he first did G3 - very cool!
Hell yeah it has! Well deserved and will always deliver. 🍻🍻🍻
Wow.... Great song, great quality... Thanks man !!!
Dave Larue in Bass is always something special
Hearing John swear is pretty wierd but cool at the same time haha

Yeap, with portnoy again, yeahhhhh...
4:29 - this heavy riffing, particularly the sliding octaves, is one of the heaviest sounds I’ve heard Petrucci come up with.
Man I love this song!

Those guys are really great musicians.

Petrucci goes full Metallica @ 4:30
I've never seen this song played live LOL!
No wonder I was getting tons of Mangini vibe in the studio version of this song.
Mike portnoy plays in the studio version smh

Paisan means he bornt in the same country as you
in gipsy language and in russian paisan more sounding like patsan means bro
In Mexico we said "Paisano". People who come from same land.
mp rlly brought this one to life when u hear the different approach MM and MP have. You can really hear how much mp plays to the music.
The album drums are so much better, Portnoy really knows what will work with the music

Didn't know Jesus could shred like that.

What an amazing performance Jhon did jajajaj simply yo dammmmm good too fast to perfect I prefer this song in 2012 version than 2018

it sounds like MM just learned this song shortly before the show, the playing's just all over the place, like he's struggling..
I love some of manginis work on dt albums, but I agree, this is so boring and lifeless. Portnoy brings it to life
I wish he played with another guitar player when doing solo stuff. There are a lot of holes in the sound.
