  • I thought I would make a video of these amazing dogs. I have been blessed to have two of them (so far...) in my own life. Just going through the basics about the breed and also giving a glimpse of our daily life with a collie.
    Please leave a comment, all kind of feedback would be very appreciated since it is my first longer video and also the first time I am talking myself. The audio probably is quite awful, because I dont have a microphone. Sorry about that =)

    I have a sable smooth collie and a rough collie mix. My senior smooth passed away fall 2022. But both smooths were pretty much perfect angels…no bad behaviors. They were rescues so I didn’t have them as puppies. They are so chill. When we leave the house, we do watch them on camera and they just sleep in their beds! I’ve been very lucky with all 3 dogs.

      That is great. It is a nice breed it seems and very easy to get along with them. Both of ours have been very kind and compliant. They might fuss around but eventually they will behave quite easily if needed.
      Our current smoothie, Isla, likes to sleep or at least rest almost all of the day when we go working at the same time. We have the camera here also, so it is fun to watch sometimes.

      Oh thanks for the positive comment. Always happy to hear that someone finds my videos useful 😇
      They are great dogs, but they shed a lot, so I would recommend a robot vacuum cleaner 😆 They also bark quite a lot as you can see from my short videos on the channel 😄 Usually when they are excited or see something outside worth reporting.
      They are a lot of fun to be around, quite intelligent and goofy, get very fond of their owners and so on. I have really enjoyed life with two smoothies so far.
      Good luck with your decision making and you can always let me know here, where you end up with it 👍

      we fell in love with the breed due to what is said spec wise about the smoothies ... and we hope we will be able to stop them from barking too much in order not put off the neighbours

    We have two 11 year old smooth sable sisters, they are both in good shape for their age and still active and playful although they are starting to slow down now. They are very loyal, sensitive dogs and of course their intelligence goes without saying. At 11 years of age they do like their long naps and have an assortment of soft beds throughout the house so they can always be in the same room with us which is a given with them.

      Sounds relatable. It is a great breed in many ways. Or at least our two smoothies have been very nice and quite easy. Very different in character though.
      Isla turned six around new year, so hopefully she has those slow speed napping years ahead of her. We could use some slower speed, thats for sure 😄

    I miss my smooth X catahoula collie mix. Cooling from both parents made Bodie a standout (he was a blue merle) . He had the collie temperament but once-and only once- he went into guard dog mode when a burglar was at the back door one night. I felt so secure after that knowing I could trust him to protect me. A great dog.

    I have a 3-year-old smooth collie that's a Sable tri-colour. He is chipped and a purebred. He's a good boy and I walk him for 2 kilometres every day he sleeps about 6 metres from me outside my window and when I tell him to rest he lays down and watches over the paddocks around the property or decides to have a little snooze. I bought him as a pup and he has taken to my training very well, we have cats and he scared them as a new addition to the family but they soon got comfortable with each other and sometimes they sleep next to each other on the front deck. 👍

    Thank you so much for posting your video of your beautiful smoothies! I was fortunate enough to get a blue merle girl last year. I really enjoy her and get many comments on how unusual looking/pretty Sterling is for a collie. Exercise is key. We walk everyday and she enjoys trails and walking in the city. She gets to do both. Stay warm.

      You are very welcome. Happy that some find the video good enough to watch even though the production is not so good 😄
      Blue merles are quite rare I guess. There is another blue merle in the area we live in, so it is not totally hopeless to find another one here.
      We just came back from our evening walk and Isla is now happy resting with a full stomach 😊👍
      Have a nice winter there and thanks for the comment 👌
      ps. There is a ton of short videos of Isla fooling around on my channel if you like to see a merle smoothie doing her weird antics in our daily life 😄👍

    I have a Tricolor Smooth aged 3 years and all the things you mention in your video are sooooo recognizable! I am thinking of having a second smooth (maybe female) but one thing we notice with our male dog now is that he can be a bit jealous, not agressively but begging for attention as you for example give attention to (in our case) the cat. Loved your video!

    • @jouniantero
      @jouniantero  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you.
      I noticed that our previous and current smoothies have some differences in character. The previous one was a little more afraid of things (sounds, shadows etc) and for example liked to sleep alone on the floor. Isla on the other hand is not bothered if we accidentally kick her while sleeping on the same bed. She is also a little more sosialismi towards other people and always very happy if someone even looks at her.
      Cant say that either of them would have been jealous of attention, but sometimes when I hug my lady or something, she starts fussing and looks like "hey dude, I am here too you know" 😄
      It is a fun breed, very kind and easy to have around. They understand quite a lot of words also. Sometimes they do bark though 😁 Especially our current princess seems to have barking as the nbr one solution to almost every possible situation 🙂 Most of the times it is a happy bark when she gets excited. And she also barks a lot when she has her neighborhood watch shift on the window 👍😇

    That 44 lb to 66 lb weight they give for collies always seems really low.
    I had a female, who was on the thin side, she was a purebred lineage going back 100 years, and she weighed in the high 60s to mid 70s her whole life. She was like the size of a female labrador and wasn't big compared to other collies we ran across.

    • @jouniantero
      @jouniantero  6 месяцев назад +1

      It seems the size and especially weight varies more than the websites say. Our Isla is around 19 kg / 42 lb. The previous smoothie we had was about 25 kg / 55 lb. She was also signifigantly taller than Isla is.

    thank you for this honest report. We're currently thinking bout having a smooth collie. However, we're living next to a lake and spend quite some time in and on the water. I know Collies are no labbis, but can they get used to water and swimming as well?

    • @jouniantero
      @jouniantero  21 день назад

      Yes, I would say. Depends a lot though about the individual dog. Our first smoothie would never touch water or swim and the current one absolutely loves swimming.
      Maybe it is inherited, I don't know 🤔 If I were you I would talk with the breeder about the puppies moms / dads preferences whether they swim or not.
      They are very lovely dogs and a lot of fun to have around. Some of them might bark a lot but I think it is in the herd dogs nature to at least bark sometimes 😄
      I have put some swimming videos of our current smoothie on my channel, feel free to have a look👌
