Why Antidepressants Make You Feel Worse - At First

  • This problem of antidepressants making you feel worse can happen when we use it for anxiety or depression. With depression, you can feel even more depressed after you take it, but if you keep taking it, that effect wears off. The problem is more pronounced with anxiety. Taking it can make your anxiety spike and feel even worse than before you took the medication.
So why would we even use this medication to treat anxiety? Because the effect is usually transient, meaning it goes away after several days. For some people it may persist and then they have to stop the medicine, but it usually goes away.
    Why does it happen?
Researchers from the University of North Carolina identified another pathway in the brain that gets activated with serotonin. Serotonin activates one pathway that helps mood and anxiety, but it also activates another pathway that increases a brain chemical called corticotropin releasing factor also called corticotrophin releasing hormone. This hormone is normally secreted in response to stress or a perceived environmental threat. This activates the body's fight or flight response that is intended to protect you from a threat. But when there is not real threat to respond to, you experience that adrenal response as anxiety.
The researchers found that serotonin can trigger this stress response through the corticotrophin hormone release. This finding has led to new research on a drug that can block this hormone during the initial phase of your treatment until you get fully onboarded with the antidepressant.
To address this problem, we start with a low dose of antidepressant and slowly increase the dose to reach a therapeutic dose (titration). Sometimes we will use When you are fully onboarded with your medication, your doctor would taper you off the benzodiazepine and you would remain only on the antidepressant to treat your anxiety.

I’ve been on Zoloft for two months almost and it is life changing. First time I had ever considered taking meds for my inconsistent mood, constant crying and over worrying. I thought it was all a normal part of life. I’m so glad I started it. My only side effect as stomach issues but besides that, I’m so calm. The emotional blunting was bothering me but I think it was due to me used to being in such extremes modes of emotional responses; I have to get used to a new way to respond that is balanced. I am hesitant to speak to others about my positive experience but I would like to eventually bc it has literally changed my life and kept me off a destructive path.,

Hi! I just want to share, I am also on setraline (zoloft/ called zolodin in my country)
I had the same expereince as you! And same reason why I considered taking medication.
Emotional blunting indeed, and you are also right about "used to being in extreme modes of emotional response"
I honestly felt the same when I started feeling 'emotional blunting', I was like "Is this even normal that I no longer cry nor feel negativity and sorrow for a while"
And then I realized, maybe it has been so long since I was able to feel calm.
Taking setraline helps me somehow but my panick attacks, still persistent and couldn't seem to control it, which is so difficult, I am on medication for 20 days, it helps my mood but with panic attacks, it doesn't do any good.
But all in all, I had positive effect, so far.

Mastiff , 4 antidepressants is too much. Consider changing your psychologist. Under supervision slowly reduce medication in the next 3 months and take 1 medication of the lowest dosage to prevent side-effects but it has to be balanced with the following practice. Heal yourself. Reduce negative thoughts. Its quite simple. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts and anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Deep inhalation is not needed. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down still before sleep and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Do the above practice daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Serotonin is an ancient form of chemical communicator found in big chunk of life forms involving plants, animals and algae.
They have myriad functions. Humans till now never achieved a clarity on how these systems works. Simply stopping reuptake and making available more serotonin is foolishness. The compounded effect of that on interconnected systems cannot be predicted. Many of those are permanent dysfunctions. SSRIs are utter rubbish. Modern medicine is increasingly put forwarding many hypothesis' akin to physicists, but that approach will not work with complicated still unexplored systems like brain and cns. Humans first should study more about brain and cns, then things will become more clearer.
Anyway this is not the right time to market a drug like SSRIs.

I'm on genvoya for several years now and last week my doctor perscriped me Citalopram, saying that it could potentially increase to a moderat extend due to genvoya. And I think I noticed some side effects that I'm not comfortable with like heart racing, inner tension and restlessness, muscle twitch, hypersensitive reflexes in the back in the morning. I was also a little scared taking antidepressants because of side effects and interactions with the other medicine. So chances are high that I only experience psychosomatic symptoms.

Antidepressant didn't work well for me. I started with Prozac, tried several other SSRI class drugs. Moved onto SNRI. Serotonin drugs were either unbearable or the the effects were minimal. Tried NDRIs, prescribed with Bupropion and Ritalin. Prescribed along side Alprazolam and Propranolol too. But it helped a lot over all and with my family's support and understanding I'm managing much better than before. Can't forget, I lost about 15 lbs the first month, while my diet didn't change at all. I was a little on the chubbier side in the past, I didn't think much of it cuz I was happy. Maybe it's placebo, feels like it helps with my ADHD too. I feel a lot more energetic, I used to had to take naps daily. I feel more energy to feel positive, and I feel like I focus a little better. It's a bit of a mixed bag, I'd still recommend trying Serotonin drugs first

Very helpful. I was on wellbutrin and it was very helpful to help me focus and be motivated, but it caused me to not be able to eat much. My appetite was too low and I veered toward unhealthy low weight so I had to switch. But my new medicine Prozac just makes me apathetic, however its still the first couple weeks so I will see what happens after a month. Thank you!

Everytime I have raised my antidepressants I feel worse in the first 2-3 weeks.
    I feel and get more:
Panicattacks, depressive thoughts, irritated, nausea , bad aptite and headache. I also can't sleep as long as I use to, I wake up after only been sleeping for a couple of hours and can't fall asleep again so that makes me tired during the day.
But now it has been 2 two weeks and the bad symptoms has become less.
I can't wait to feel better!
Have been mentally and physically ill for many years so haven't been able to work for 3 years and I feel like l'm not getting anywhere in life. Like nothing has changed even though alot have changed because I do work on myself, go to therapy and eat medications instead of selfmedicating by harming myself.
And I talk about my problems but at this moment that has not made me feel any better because I have PTSD and therapy has made me remember thoughts and feelings that I have put away for so long so now I'm even more depressed.
But it is common , and that's the hard part I understand alot of people can't handle because it's so tough to treat PTSD. I have had panicattacks at every session in the last three weeks because starting the treatment and talking about trauma makes me feel like I'm there again so I feel paranoid and anxious.
Now I just want to talk about my thoughts related to anxiety ans depression because that's easier and usually makes me feel better afterwards. But I have to go through this treatment for ptsd because all of my trauma is affecting my daily life💪💪

There are many options available. ECT, TMS, Psychiatric Service Dogs. Depression, anxiety, and panic are real disorders that NEED treatment otherwise they could get worse. Please find a doctor willing to work with you to find a solution. You deserve to live your life pain free, physically and mentally.

Seek God on all your ways. I pray that you find the right help. Good potion of the time. Anti depressants are not the main solution but it is part of it. Pray and keep fighting. A non medical solution, is to try exercising or do something that u enjoy. Talk to a trusted friend or family member. Dont give up.

Informative video. If taking ADS stick to the lowest mg to prevent side effects but strictly avoid benzos as they are habit forming. Never stop ADS abruptly. First take alternate days, then once in 3 days, once in 4 days, once in 5 days, once a week and see how you feel and then taper off. The brain takes time to adjust. Keep a tablet always with you for a placebo effect feeling. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15-20 minutes or more. You can sit or lie down, anywhere-anytime, neck straight and eyes closed. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. Keep a reminder to observe your breath sensations throughout the day and night --before sleep, when reading, at work, when sitting in the park etc. Like me, make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

I’m am pretty sure I have inattentive ADHD, my son was diagnosed years ago and I have all the symptoms, 44 and my life has been one train wreck after another. SSRIs have always seemed to make me worse, agitation, zombie, very bad virago, dullness, “brain zaps” etc. in different combinations and severity depending on the medication and dosage.
The brain zaps were especially bad with some meds to the point I had to have someone drive me home to take them if I forgot. All of the depression meds I told did this to some extent.
And a gradual decrease in interest in the few things that use to interest me, now I don’t care if I do much of anything regardless of what it is.
I’m working on getting tested for ADHD, but with my almost lifelong symptoms, and my son’s diagnosis I’m confident I’m on the right track.

I was on Prozac way back when my issues first started, and I literally lost a year of my life. I worked every day and slept like the dead, but I don't remember any of it. After that, I was put on Zoloft & Xanax. I had epic panic attacks & I loved the Xanax!! About 6 yrs. ago, I got a new doctor who weaned me off the Xanax because it's been found to cause dementia type illnesses in older people. (I'm 72). Now I take the maximum dosage of Zoloft daily, but I am going to be weaning off that as well. I am going to try life without antidepressants & see how it goes. Zoloft was a crutch for 25 yrs.
