You don’t need to remove all 3 screws on top of the gear box. Just the middle one will take the case off. The larger ones on the sides are for the gearbox itself. Also when you put the larger pinion gear in, you will need to use the other hole on the plastic mount for the motor (the small half moon shaped plastic piece with the spring screw). Just a few things i thought were very important that were left out. Not a knock great video!!!
I know right… How qualified can he be to change a pinion gear if he remove screws that he doesn't even know what therefore… I don't understand how he missed it for the video. It's okay you know maybe first time to miss how to remove that cover properly your very first time but not for the video… Should have learned something by then… Hey well I've got you here I noticed the lock nut is there a tool that can hold it because mine just spins. I already know I could just jam a small screwdriver in but confused about why Traxxas made it like this unless the tool or a tool is made to hold it but at first glance it doesn't seem so… Do you know what I mean?
Ok heads up changing the pinion makes the car faster however there is a price for it, and that is that the car overheats and you have to give it a good 10-20 min break for it to cool down especially with the body of the car on so tbh it is fun but if you wanna play with the car longer the standard pinion I think is the way to go
So you removed the plastic part that has only two positions for two different pinion gears. I didn't knew that. I thought i was limited to use only the high speed pinion and the 11t pinion that comes installed in the model.
@Jevan Innes sorry man, no idea... quadruple check the screws, grub screw, etc there's also the little bushing that you have to pop off on the mounting plate
No I would say not. The motor on the speed runs I did (Check out the recent 20T video) was hot after a couple of passes. I have a 14T I am going to fit for day to day use, I'm thinking that'll be good for 50 + or - 2 mph on 3S, but not get too warm. Even the 17T shows as 'Not recommended' on the rustler 4x4 gearing chart. Also 60mph is 88 Feet per second, which makes that 500ft parking lot very small very fast! home that helps
yes we know that now, several people have commented on that already, my only question to you? If you know how to do this why the hell are you watching this video.....If you know how to drive an auto, do you still watch videos on 'how to drive an auto?'. But I understand 100% NO ONE ON RUclips, and I mean NO ONE is allowed to make a mistake or they'll be shot down in flames by the armchair critics...who have hundreds of rc videos of their own... or not (amazon sell lots of extra armchair cushions)
@@nitrogiant3240 no worries at all, didn't mean to chew your head off, but I get a lot of comments on the how to videos which make me think if they know that why are they watching this. Anyhow ALL feedback is appreciated as yours truly doesn't claim to know it all, and will leave the odd howling error in there!
not a clue! Sorry to say a lot depends on the batteries, esc and motor you run, which could add upto 35-40mph difference in cars top speed. Also you're into the Traxxas 'fits but don't recommend' territory .e.g. you are on your own, fry the esc or motor and don't expect them to cover it under warranty. Of note is it struggles on the 20T pinion. Do like I do buy a Dynamite GPS and test until it breaks.
I just bought the Traxxas 4x4 with 15t titan 550 motor that comes with it. What's the best spur and pinion gear for speed. Im new to this. Please I'm open to any comments.
It’s the same way my slash 4x4 vxl changes pinion gear, I don’t think I’ll be using the optional pinion on my Rustler since I’m mostly gonna use it off road
Doh! That said setting the mesh is mainly by feel on it, I pushed it in firmly then backed it off by 1-2mm. I'm going for a 14T pinion for day to day use, that should give good mid range speed, reduce the wheelies a bit and still keep the motor cool. On the sand the 11T was still making the ESC overheat...Lot to be said for stock. A lot of the speed run stuff I do I put back to stock soon afterwards. On the 20T runs I could feel the motor/esc heat before I took the shell off!
Lance no worries, indeed you only need remove the one center screw, the two on either side look to connect to the cover but aren't. I shot this without my reading glasses on! It takes me under a 2 mins per change now! How are you liking the car? I've Mip driveshafts to fit today

my rustler 4x4 vxl came with a spacer to automatically set the mesh between the 2 gears it came with. :)
Excellent video. I love that they made changing out the pinion so easy now.
Thank you for the pinion gear info. I like how you share your mistakes so others don't make the same. Much appreciated and thank you again.

Dude thanks a lot. I used to take off the complete rear end for that lol

Does the fan help?
Hello @driftomaniac we’re can I get 14t pinion gear any part numbers really appreciate thanks for video.
Whefe is the link for the gear
Great video! This is what I was exactly looking for and I did it in 2 mins! Let’s ride...!
So you removed the plastic part that has only two positions for two different pinion gears. I didn't knew that. I thought i was limited to use only the high speed pinion and the 11t pinion that comes installed in the model.
Hi rich love the vids...what is the pitch on the gears for the rustler?
Its actually 2 bolts.. the middle bolt on the cover and one for the motor thats it!
What pinion do you recommend for off road? 14 tooth?
Just the stock one
Thanks for the video. After reading the other comments on the other video I was worried. Now I’m going to go do it again.
nice to see how to remove the motor, but how do remove the gear, crucial piece of info missing!
This was extremely helpful!!! Thank you!
By the way you don't even need to take off the two long screws on the gearbox cover...
Two-screw pinion replacement! YAY!
Yes Someone realized it
@Jevan Innes sorry man, no idea...
quadruple check the screws, grub screw, etc
there's also the little bushing that you have to pop off on the mounting plate
What's the biggest gear u can fit
nice guy34 nice guy34 I think 20t
22t actually
I have a rustler 4x4 and bought a 13t pinion but can’t get it to mesh right can anyone help??? Plz
The holes on the motor mount only seem to fit the 11t and 17t pinion
My Boss has two engine screws. One at the bottom by the chassis. Painful to get out.
Is the 20 tooth good for bashing?

Thx for the video helped me alot!
Link to pinion plz! Nice tutorial 👌
Hi you will need to look it up on the parts list on the traxxas website as I don't have this car anymore, and I'd have to look it up on there anyway
Thanks a lot mate a huge help!!😃😃
You need to remove the MIDDLE SCREW ONLY the two longer screws are not connected to the cover
yes we know that now, several people have commented on that already, my only question to you? Didn’t read that far down was just trying to help

I have a 23 ponion and 48 spur about how fast on the rustler 4x4

It a lot like the Stampede 4x4 that's awesome
Nice video, pretty interesting
You just need to remove gear cover( which is the middle screw) and the motor mount screw.
the gear cover is held down by three screws. At least mine is. I've just checked before replying.
Just remove the middle screw and the gear cover comes off. The other two screws go to the motor mount. Give it a try.
@@DriftomaniacsRC He is right, only 1 screw needs to go off :-)
Only one screw is holding it down, hes right. i just did it

haha, props for owning up to your mistakes. I would have made the same ones
Jdpasl did this without taking the cover off n setting the mesh n stripped the spur gear, oops!

You seem to fight with your traxxas pinions quite a bit. Lol
Only need to take off 2 screws!
Breaks the traxxas rustler 4x4 vxl faster with a 20th pinion
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
👍👍
If you can talk a little slower for us non euro folks that would be great. Your heavy accident is difficult to decipher
Noted!
Wish I would have watched video first I removed everything you told me not to LOL
