Isn't the NY subway system the oldest and largest in the U.S.? Some of those tunnels show their age; you can almost see ghosts even if you don't believe in such things, it's just the old and abandoned look of many of the tunnels (mostly in the Manhattan area). You do see many rats; it's a wonder I haven't seen any fried or flattened rats as they are often seen running across the track and third rail.
There seems to be many versions of the subway map other than the "official" ones, many of which are easier to follow and follow the schematic style (i.e no curves, just straight lines up and down, east-west and a few 45º).

By far, the only RUclips video that teaches reading an MTA map...thanks.

I'm glad it was helpful and thanks for watching! It's one thing to take the subway- but the most important part is knowing where you're going!

At 9:55, you are absolutely correct--you could take the G to Hoyt/Schermerhorn and transfer to the A or C. However, I've yet to meet a New Yorker who would actually do such a thing. Besides adding a stop to the ride, that transfer isn't on the same platform. I think without exception everyone that I know would choose your first option (taking the F to Jay Street and transferring there). I know you gave a similar message within your video, but I'm amplifying it here is the second option isn't something anyone would do by choice.

For sure, that just seems counter intuitive. Always love talking subway directions and seeing other peoples ideas and strategies haha. Thanks for watching!

    A few corrections:
1:55 the 20 min max wait only applies to the subway. Many bus routes go to hourly service
6:25 the F train does not go to Atlantic Center Barclays Center.

Hi Steven, Thank you for the correction on the bus service time. At 6:25 I was actually referring to the R train rather than the F Train. Thanks for your input and stay tuned for other New York related videos.

Work on your microphone performance. Go for an even volume, but use your tone for emphasis. Volume goes up and down a lot in this video.

Hi , just discovered your channel. I have my first ever visit to New York coming up at the beginning of May. The thoughts of using the subway terrifies me 😅 your videos are very helpful. I’ve watched a few and find yours by far the most detailed and easiest to understand. Best wishes from Ireland and keep up the good work, thank you, Mark.

Hi Mark. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the support. Yes NYC is huge and it could intimidating but just act like you own the place and you'll be fine. Interestingly, its actually one of the safest large cities in the USA if you look at the crime per capita.
New York is an amazing city, and there is so much to do and see that can suit almost anyone's taste. I'm a NYer so if you have any questions at all please let me know if I could be of help.
      All the Best,
      JP

One thing you didn't mention is that the color of each bullet feeds to a specific line: Lexington Avenue Subway, Sixth Avenue Subway, Subway, Eighth Ave Subway, Seventh Avenue Subway, etc. How confusing it would be if those subways were only called the Green Line, the Orange Line, the Blue Line, the Red Line, etc. Because an out-of-towner would then have to constantly have to look at the map to see which line goes where!

    • @ProjectGaiaTravel
      @ProjectGaiaTravel  8 месяцев назад +1

for sure. some cities only have colored lines, but it is important to note that the colors are used to express where specific lines meet and then branch off to. The colors are necessary to provide a general idea of what line the branches eventually converge on. Thanks for watching and for your input.

1- is there a map and video explains bus routes in Manhattan? (Port authority to world trade)
    2-Why only subway videos?
3- too afraid to take subway
    4- thanks!

Hello, yes there are various maps that traverse Manhattan. Take a look at the MTA website and navigate to the Manhattan bus map showing you all the bus routes. Many buses travel along the avenues in Manhattan and there is definitely a route that will take you from the Port Authority to World Trade. However, the E Train will take you much faster (about 10 mins) where the bus can take up to 30-45 mins. Buses are notoriously slow in Manhattan, especially crosstown routes (east-west routes) and walking is often faster than the bus.
