    I strongly disagree with “if you are a better player, you win regardless of the breaks your opponent takes” @5:40. It’s obvious that a big part of Loh’s strategy and shot selection are to pressure Alex’s stamina. Taking unruly breaks directly gives Alex an unfair advantage and ruins big part of Loh game plan. Think of boxing, should you be able to take more time to break because your opponent tired you out? Additionally, it’s widely studied and recognized that psychological momentum(PM) in sports is a big thing. Taking breaks often used as a tactic to break your opponent’s flow or winning streak(PM) for example line judge challenges and court wiping. So a better player can definitely lose if his opponent can take illegal pauses to break the better player’s momentum and to recover from his stamina targeting strategy.
    Trying to link mental instability and gesture after a bad shot is also a stretch. Being comfortable expressing however the heck you feel within appropriate boundaries, that’s mental stability.

      But nothing against Alex though, It comes down to “don't hate the player hate the game”. Alex knows the rules and using / bending it to his advantage and the game allows for that.

      Look back to Peter Gade v Lin Dan 2003 - 2004, Lin Dan relied on his physicality to retrieve and attack, overcome PG's wealth of experience. But to do so, he also took lots of breaks to sustain his stamina playing that kind of a physically rigorous playstyle. I'd attribute part of PG's loss to his lack of mental fortitude. Later on in the years, PG has stopped complaining to the referee for LD's "delay tactics" though - perhaps he realized that its better to be cool about it than disturbed?
      You can't complain about the mental game aspect of the game. It is part and parcel of sport, just like how taunting is in some contact sports. It is also why we celebrate champions so much, for their exemplary mental fortitude.

    • @HokKan

      Badminton is not just a physical game. It's also a mental one, and a strategic one. Taking breaks to disrupt your opponent is nothing new. Go watch Taufik and Lin Dan's games from over a decade ago, they knew every trick in the book and knew exactly when to call for disruptions. A complete player is one who excels in the whole package - physical, mental, strategy. If Loh is losing because he lacks in strategy and taking advantage of the grey areas of the sport, then he isn't the better overall player. At most, you can say he is the better player in the physical department.

    • @MrJ4ckie
      @MrJ4ckie 2 месяца назад

      The point is that now only Alex was resting - Loh got the same breaks. They shouldn't affect him disproportionately if he is indeed the better player on that day.
      Alex apparently pushed him on one of his weaknesses.
      Additionally, your point that outwards expression of feelings is an indicator of mental stability is even more of a stretch than saying it's one of instability. Additionally, it's less about the outwards expression, and rather what he was expressing - frustration. Letting yourself get frustrated will almost always be to your disadvantage, and it can be the deciding factor in a really tight match.
      If you are laser-focused, instead of getting frustrated with an error you might analyze whether that was the right action to take, and just slightly lacking execution, or if the decision itself was suboptimal, then accept it as it is and move on. Repeatedly showing frustration like that is an indicator (not a certainty) that you're not as focused as you could be.

    To my humble opinion, that's a very interesting and convincing breakdown of both strategies. It's remarkable that Lannier can keep up with this enormous amount of energy for so long: Loh really forces him to move a lot, and fast. Maybe Loh himself was exhausted, and therefore lacked the explosiveness to kill at the net.

    • @sid6645
      @sid6645 2 месяца назад +1

      I think the point of the mental is super important. Its hard to push against the exhaustion when you react so hard to every mistake. Loh let it get to him, and it eventually had an impact, a very small one. But that was all Lanier needed to win that third set.

    A few things you missed in my opinion :
    - LKY and Alex are sparring partners and played recently so strategy is not only about this match

    Great video! I think people are misunderstanding the mental point. Reacting or celebrating isn't always bad, but with Loh we could see it was clearly getting to him. If you can't keep your mentality strong, and keep on reacting so hard to mistakes, it certainly won't help. And it is possible to "keep it in" for a game, because thats just how tough games are. After all Lanier also kept a straight face until he won. The stress in equal games like this always goes both ways.

      Letting off pressure is one thing, but wildly gesticulating isn't very disciplined. I think the point he brought up about LKY losing his cool is still valid. Sometimes you have to keep it in, you have to keep composure. You can't let emotions dictate your play. Its the cost of the game; your opponent is doing the exact same thing to play their best.

    Now there's a big contradiction in what you said in my opinion, you stated that there's nothing to complain about if a player is delaying, as both players have the same rest, and the better player will win anyway. You forget that it isn't necessarily about rest its more about disrupting rhythm. This is why we complain about players who delay, delaying is against the rules and using it the way players like Marin often did or how Alex did here, is a sneaky illegitimate tactic to disrupt the opponent which has nothing to do with badminton skill but can work effectively. Such tactics are against the rules and unsportsmanlike.

    • @Justlookingaround19
      @Justlookingaround19 2 месяца назад

      This is the reason why players slip and break their ankles because of the kind of mentality you are trying to Push. What if there was a lot of sweat on the floor or the player needed to wipe down should they be forced to play even thou the court really needs a wipe down?. Axelsen has slipped due to Umpires refusal to give any breaks or the umpire just ask the player to use their shoes to wipe the sweat off.

    • @thefallenarm589

      @@Justlookingaround19 yeah, same happenned to Alex 2 or 3 weeks ago, a referee refused to wipe the court when he asked. He slipped on this exact spot the point after, extending anormally his leg ;could have been a bad injury.

      If its not allowed then Umpires should take action. Online noise doesn't translate to anything on court. I hope BWF maybe makes rests limited like challanges, so thats its more quantified and predictable.

    • @bobmarley6306
      @bobmarley6306 2 месяца назад +3

      @Justlookingaround19 Did you even read what I said? From basic reading comprehension you should see I'm obviously speaking about unnecessary delay, I'm not saying the players should play non stop regardless of circumstance. Obviously if the court needs to be wiped or racket changed or medical timeout that is a necessary delay, my complaint is about players who delay for no reason between rallies. I'm astounded and quite impressed that you managed to misunderstand my point so drastically.

    • @bobmarley6306
      @bobmarley6306 2 месяца назад

      @sid6645 Umpires are very strict and over the top on net calls nowadays but do not speak up enough when players are using delaying tactics and delaying the game for no reason. The rules already state play must be continuous except for necessary breaks such as wiping the court etc. The problem is the umpires who do not enforce the rules.

    while watching this game, i defenitly also felt that LKY played a bit too defensive overall. while he did play some great rallies, its a bit sad not to see him dominate through his attack like he used to. I feel like a few more powerfull jump smashes following a deadly net spin would have helped LKY have more confidence, therefore beating Lanier.

      Sometimes I think that LKY, like Lin Dan, has purposely slowed down his game for a longer career life span. Playing speed and power sustains you a lot of injury. He needs to learn to be more intelligent, using his burst speed to capitalize on opportunities more effectively and consistently. And perhaps he is forcing himself to play at such a pace to do so. If every player who is tired starts to get rest at his own will in between the points then the badminton match will never end, by your logic that is. And whether the opponent gets the same amount of time or not still doesnt matter, because the break is on the rhythm of alex lanier here, while the opponent wants to play, but is delayed because of tactics and dirty play which affects the mental state of opponent. Only those who play badminton, know how important it is go with the flow of the match especially for the one who is controlling the match at the moment or the one who has just won a point and is about to serve.
