As many other posters on here, my absolute favourite skit from the Fast Show. It made me laugh so hard I cried the first time I saw it, I reacted so violently to it I think I coughed up a lung. Friends still sign off cards, letters and phone calls, 'With an OWL!!'. Fantastic situational comedy, timed to perfection; and completely bonkers! With an OWL. I also interject a manic 'That's NO guarantee!' into conversations with friends, family and clients. I am on my third job and sixth family.
All these years later, and I still have the immortal words "with an owl!" still floating around in my mind. Dropping The Fast Show quotes into conversations nowadays gets you a lot of funny looks, but who cares when it still cracks you up just hearing it!
Dropping The Fast Show quotes into conversations is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman... At first it can be a little scary, particularly if it's not really appropriate, but eventually you will find someone that appreciates the quality and the rhythm of the quote and wants you to give her all you've got. In a hole. In the fog. WITH AN OWL!
The Fast Show was consistently good but this sketch is the jewel in the crown. Love Paul Whitehouse and Mark Williams. Different class to the so-called comedy we see now on our TV screens.
Classic comedy. Even after all these years have passed since the first time I saw it, this still makes me laugh every time. The Fast Show was a brilliant show, and this particular sketch is one of its most inspired moments.
This is still one of my favourite sketches ever. Everything is perfect. From the way Mark looks at the camera at the start to that smile of satisfaction in the end. The Fast Show was simply brilliant.
I legit just stopped by here to see this clip because I'm rewatching the Potter movies and every time I see Arthur Weasley, this is all I can think of lol
Had the immense privilege of seeing this performed live on 29/03/24 on the Fast Show 30th Anniversary Live Tour in Bristol. Absolutely BRILLIANT! Still my fave Fast Show sketch and still absolutely insane!!!
you wanna watch were your steppin round here boy, you might fall down a hole. where would you be if you fell down a hole ?. lmao. used to watch this show when i was like 12 im now 24 & still laugh at it. imagine stoping & asking for directions in the middle of no were & meeting someone like this lol. mark williams is a really funny chap. & paul white house is a genius :-).
Absolute fucking comedy genius. Like everyone else the "stuck in an ole, wiv an owl" is genius but the "I'm a fully experienced rambling hiker" is also comedy gold. Those two are comedy royalty.
Many years ago I had an argument with my then ex girlfriend one night. I was miles from home so hitchhiked to the M1, on the way, getting a lift for 4 of the 16 miles with a couple of guys who, when they set off again, were still both looking over their shoulders at me. Fair enough if the passenger was, but the driver as well? These guys were clearly pissed, but I was still incandescent with rage about my earlier argument, so didn't have the sense to ask them to stop and let me out. They had no windscreen wipers, no full beam, the back window where I was was held up with sticky tape, there was something wrong with the heating, and the front left brake worked a bit, so when the driver braked we would swerve to the left. Now I don't know if it was the faulty heating, or a carelessly stubbed out cigarette, but the area in front of the gear lever burst into flames. I couldn't wind the window down, so was choking on acrid fumes. I suggested that they pull over and let me put the fire out, but they insisted that it would be fine and carried on, with the driver beating at the flames, and swerving to the left every time he did so, as if his hands were attached by an invisible pole, and couldn't be more 2 feet or so apart from each other. Luckily, my journey with them was short, and I got out and waited by a slip road onto the motorway in the middle of the night... with a *Owl!* Yes, a huge, beautiful white owl came along and settled on a post about 3 metres from me, and waited with me, watching me, until a lorry carrying frozen food gave me a lift. Unfortunately, I don't have a story about being stuck in a hole with an owl, this is the closest I can get, although I did try to rescue one once, but sadly it died as a result of eating a poisoned rodent.
The reason why I uploaded this sketch, is because it seems to be very underrated by the general community. Couldn't find the video from anywhere. Well, atleast it is here now, for everyone to see.
What I hope the people from outside the UK realise is: We have this scale of "Hard men": 1. The Marines or Paras. Equally nutty. 2. The SAS and SBS. Also top blokes, kind of like the above refined, but a bit mental. 3. "Experienced rambling hikers". They can only be defeated by Owls. It was a near won thing in WW2. If Hitler hadn't killed all the Owls in April 1944 because he was scared after reading Harry Potter, D-Day could have been VERY different.
These "Direction" sketches are by far the whackiest I've ever seen. Absolute genius. Great character, Sinister and lovable at the same time. He's better used here than in Harry potter!
Stuck in a hole, in the fog, in the middle of the night...WITH AN OWL!
Best line in all of Fast Show history!
Hi,
I'm Ed Winchester

lets beone you don’t understand, what it’s like in the foggy mist and sometimes the misty fog to be stuck down a hole with an owl!
I know this reply is rather late... but me too. I still say "That's no GUARANTEE!"
What, WITH AN OWL. ?
You wanna watch yourself round here boy!
It Could 'Appen!
All these years later and I'm still howling at the look to the camera at 0.14
With that one look, you can see the madness in his eyes.
Loved the fast show
Hard to think of a better comedy sketch than this; it's absolute perfection.
A close second to the Pam Doove audition from League of Gentlemen for me.
Exscuuuse Beef@@bonusgrooves
Whoever directed this did a great job. It's fucking perfect.
My Dad loved this scene, I can remember it had been recorded off of tv years ago, he laughed so much lol rest in peace, thinking of you -3
Lovingly said xxx
Every single line in this sketch is brilliant.
I love at the end how he has this sense of satisfaction that his day job has been done xD
Mark Williams couldn’t deliver these lines any better... perfection.... that last “with an owl” is too funny
Just his presence at the live show was enough to make everyone laugh. Just a funny man
Perfect touch when the cups fell off his rucksack. The whole sketch is timed to perfection.

Which was nice.
WITH AN OWUL!
Can't remember much of the 90s and the Fast Show because I'm afraid I was very, very drunk.
One of the best shows ever on tv great work
One of their best sketches.
"THAT'S NO GUARANTEE!"
Never fails to have me in stitches!
That's no guaranTEE!
I say that often, in just that voice
And laugh every time
It could happen
Lovely old tree

I love that part where he looks at the camera at 0:13
i used to add the phrase "with an owl!" to every sentence when i was back in school... pissed off many teachers!! haha
They are so good at what they do. Not just the script but the facial expressions and timing and EVERYTHING! Brilliant.
Classic comedy. Even after all these years have passed since the first time I saw it, this still makes me laugh every time. The Fast Show was a brilliant show, and this particular sketch is one of its most inspired moments.
Still makes me laugh every time I watch it. The Fast Show was pure genius.
The satisfied look right at the end is awesome.
even watching it in 2022,still makes the tear of laughter run down my face
2023 and fast show still king.
This is still one of my favourite sketches ever. Everything is perfect. From the way Mark looks at the camera at the start to that smile of satisfaction in the end. The Fast Show was simply brilliant.
When I was at Uni I saw "WITH AN OWL!" carved into one of the desks. I like to think it was carved there by a fellow fan of this sketch. :)
No shit.
Cleverrrrrrr@@Fleeto2006
I just love the fact that Mark Williams went to to play Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter films which also had Owls in them.
I love to think that somebody on set made that connection!
I legit just stopped by here to see this clip because I'm rewatching the Potter movies and every time I see Arthur Weasley, this is all I can think of lol

Love the way he looks up at the camera at the beginning.
The little sigh of satisfaction Mark gives at the end just frames the whole scetch
I can honestly say, for me, this sketch is up there with Four Candles and Bloody Greta Garbo.
I, for one, agree.

the best bit is the running away with all his pots and stuff falling off 😂
One of the funniest sketches ever.
I like the way he looks up and gives us an evil stare before turning round to the Hiker..... lol XD
Absolute fucking comedy genius. Like everyone else the "stuck in an ole, wiv an owl" is genius but the "I'm a fully experienced rambling hiker" is also comedy gold. Those two are comedy royalty.
Cheers for the directions, Rural Dr. Seuss
This never fails to make me laugh.
My fav sketch from any show timing is perfection. Idea perfection. 😂

This scene and the "orange juice" scene from league of gentleman will pretty much always be my absolute favourites!
The funniest brit com clip ever, in my opinion!!
especially when he takes off after him down the road! tears of laughter guaranteeeed!!
I just love Mark's face from 1:09 to 1:28 with his hair just blowing around his face as he stares crazily into Paul's eyes
Fantastic when you’re fully equipped, brilliant
