Lexus says its 6th-generation ES shares less mechanically with the Toyota Camry than past versions, but you can tell this vehicle and the Camry use the same platform. Unfortunately, the Camry has gotten cheaper over the past few years, and in the context of newer luxury cars, so has the ES.
At the core of the ES 300 Hybrid, a 2.5-liter engine works with an electric drive motor to put out a net 200 horsepower. Acceleration is like that of any Toyota or Lexus hybrid-electric: It feels like an EV at low speeds, and then the motor kicks in. At least it gets great fuel economy. EPA estimates for the ES 300h are 40 mpg in the city, 39 on the highway, and 40 combined. And when it comes to safety, the ES 300h delivers, with Lexus Safety System+ now standard. This includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, adaptive radar cruise control, intelligent high-beams, and lane-departure alerts with steering assist. That's an incredible amount of high-tech safety gear that comes standard. Read more on CarGurus: cargur.us/fYzf0

The ES feels cheap... compared to what? A Bentley? The front seat is cramped? Did this guy even drive the car? The front seat is literally one of the largest and most comfortable. It's up there with Volvo seats. Then compares the backseat to a Camry? No dude it's way goddamn more room than a Camry. You have to go up to an 80k car to get more room in the back. Then says the car feels numb, no dude that's what a glass smooth ride feels like, you want a "lively ride" best look to BMW but good luck finding one as reliable, with similar mpg, and anywhere near as comfortable.
If you're shopping for this car, I HIGHLY recommend that you check out other reviews, and also test drive it. This review is almost bizarre in my opinion. I just bough this car and I'm *thrilled* with it, and I'm getting 40mpg. The only other luxury cars I've owned were a BMW X3 and two Jaguar XJ8s, but it seems like he must have just driven a 911 or ridden in a Maybach minutes ago the way he's ragging on this car. And to be honest, I usually like his reviews.
Why did you bother reviewing this car? You didn't like it before you started.
Too bad you lost credibility at the start of your review...the ES is based on the Avalon not the Camry.
You are correct dcharizard91...However, the Camry platform is the basis for the Avalon, ES, RX, Highlander, Aurion, etc.
It floats and does not feel secure at all; see the latest Honda Accord and that is a driver car.
Lexus is always and will be expensive Toyota and changing the clothes does not equal to a high end car.
:( go figure yourself, haha
Dude he litterally shut the door so hard. Even a Benz makes that sound when u close it that hard
You’re not reviewing the car. You’re complaining about it. I’ve had the opportunity to drive Lexus and I live it. It’s got a lot of power behind it.
This dude is a clown. Lexus 300 is one of the most beautiful, reliable cars ever made.
I'm really glad I already own an ES. Mine is a 2004 which I have learned to love more and more over the years for its comfort, quiet and reliability. Sometimes I wish it would start developing problems so I could replace it......with another ES. This reviewer seems to think the ES is supposed to be something other than what it is. It is not a sports car. It is not a street racer. It's not the first choice to take on a curvy mountain road. It is not a "drivers" car like an BMW. It is quiet and comfortable. I have driven from California to the east coast and up to Canada numerous times. I do not feel tired at the end of a long days drive like I do in my other cars. For anyone considering buying an ES I suggest you ignore this review and test drive one for yourself. I expect you will have a much different opinion than this reviewer provided you have accurate expectations of what the car is supposed to provide.
This guy is a joke. How much you where paid mate to put this car down.
Who is looking for a "fun to drive car" when buying ES? Your are spitting negativity in your review instead of fact. I'd expect an unbiased review from CarGurus rather than this and I wish I could give you more than 200 dislikes.
This guy is comparing a near entry level Lexus with flagship Genesis and Jaguar offerings and calling it cheap. I generally love Car Gurus reviews but this one is not very good
After watching this review, you wonder how Lexus sells as many of these cars as they do. You should review a car, more from the perspective of the customer who would be shopping for this car in the first place. Passion and fun to drive, are really not adjectives that my parents use when describing a car. They understand efficiency, leather, wood, prestige, and resale value, which after 3 years, will have a much higher resale value, than that Hyundai that you seem to love.
golfbuddy1969 Agreed. If a "fun drive" is what you want, why bother with a sedan when you can get a 370Z for much cheaper.
The ES is on a platform that's under the Avalon not the Camry.
Strangely harsh review. I'm 6' and weigh 215, and I found this car extremely roomy, even up front. I just test-drove it today, and I *loved* it. Very smooth ride, and much better handling and ergonomics IMO than you say here.
Didn't it switch to the Avalon platform with this generation?
Michael Brown Yes.
Clearly this guy just hates Toyota products. Doesn't even know that the ES isn't Camry-based anymore. This car has so many reason to own it, not to mention recommend it. None of the competition can even make a claim of Toyota/Lexus reliability. This was not an impartial review...and stop slamming the doors, jerk.
Did he just compared a hybrid to a G80?
This guy his out of his mind 🤣 I owned es300 2016 almost 4 years it’s absolutely great ride never have problem very smooth saves you a lot of money for gas and maintenance plus it’s huge inside and I’m 6”2 so don’t listen to him 😂😂
I guess I’m a bit late but do you think that someone who is 6’5” 230 lbs will be able to fit comfortably in this car?
Wrong reviewer for the right car.
Some people who review products are sick. Can this guy be that..
it's a great car to see, feel and drive. It's Avalon platform BTW!
As a former 2015 genesis owner, I would never purchase that vehicle again. The hyundai customer service is abysmal and the build quality was very poor. Also, in two years the vehicle depreciated to 1/3 of the original value. This is why I purchased a Lexus GS 350 F Sport.
No offense sir but anyone with your above average male height, build, and long torso, flipper like feet, and gangly long legs is not going to fit all that great into mid-sized four-door sedan, especially one equipped with a sunroof... Juss sayig. Also, Lexus and Toyota are all about long-term longevity, materials and texture quality that hold up over time and do not wear out easily or break, and the one thing most people do like about them is that they typically don't leave people stranded on the side of a road in the middle of nowhere because they are NOT cheaply made. You silly silly silly mcgilly!
Starting the review with negatively? Sure I'm fine with that, but the moment you thought this was the same platform on a 2013+ es as a camry and "competes" with the jaguar xf and g80? lolwut. Kinda lost all credibility man. Couldn't even finish the rest of the video. This is coming from a guy that has only owned American brands and by no means am I a Lexus fan boy, but at least I know well enough that this is the second most bought vehicle in the Lexus industry and the 300h has some the most Earth friendly interior stuff compared to its competitors(Lincoln mks hybrid or w.e). You need to work on your videos better.
If agent smith from the matrix was giving a review, this is what it would look like lol
This guy just wants to say one thing that German cars are better than the quality product Lexus get off the drugs ASAP Thanks for wasting our time with your video other brand might have better looking information ℹ️ screen but if it works. These Lexus are solid quality product and reliability wise great and the Lexus name alone is a superior on all the cars name in the world Enjoy your other type of brand and keep repairing and live at the dealership for fixing it
The most bullshit review I have ever seen, Lexus are the world most reliable, comfortable and fuel efficient manufacturer out there, In fact European mechanics say, most of the Europeans cars start to give big issues after completing 100k with reg to sporty ride yes, BMW is number 1. There are some people are are jealous about the success of Lexus. to be more precise I see more and more white people love this brand, now that is a slap on your face you idiot....its all about fair and being truthful, Japanese manufacturers are amazing when it comes to that.. my worst exp is Audi, manufacturer who looses its complete value after 100k and see how they cheated the world on emission...
You stated that your car has panoramic sunroof but it does not
The sunglasses man. Take em off.
So just 10 seconds into this video I already knew this guy was about the shit all over his car it seemed like he was annoyed that he got picked to drive it lol
did he say this car takes regular gas not premium compared to all luxury cars out there, 10 cents more
People should never review cars they hate!
George Kennedy I am confused, you had a '94 ES300 and you were complaining this is cramped? I am 6'5 and have 2013 ES300h and have plenty of room, maybe taking off your coat would help.
He doesn't know what he is talking about.
I've driven a lot sportier sedans including the BMW 335 and Acura TL, the ES does exactly what it's supposed to. No, it's not as powerful for nimble but that's not what it's built for. For me, it's perfect for what I do. Daily driving and rideshare. I knew that going into it and that's exactly what I've gotten. I can easily drive this car for 12 hours without any discomfort, claustrophobia or feeling cramped.
If you want something sportier, get an IS or GS.
I do agree about the seats being less comfortable and the steering wheel not moving closer to the driver though. My TL had more comfortable seats. But still far better than my wife's Honda Pilot or my previous Honda Accord.
I was thinking about purchasing this car as I could use a new daily driver with good fuel economy. However..I like a really soft ride..and when he said it had a soft ride but not over bigger bumps..I lost interest. The roads are horrible where I live and I need something that can really smooth them out.
So, I guess there's not much you like about this car huh?
This guy seriously needs to do his research before he reviews something and talks trash about it. lol.
I own this car and appreciate your candid review. I have more respect for your positive comments as I know they are sincere. My 300h car door slams are very cheap sounding!! I like the car though.
Been a buyer of Audis and MBs since beginning of the 90s but considering Lexus ES now as I love the interior, materials used, build quality, the looks and fuel economy! I wish the ES would come with AWD and I would buy one in an instant (seems like the GS is the only option since newer RX is too expensive for my money).
umm the XJ and G80 compete with the GS. This reviewer is horrible.
I understand now but that's like say you could get a Shelby GT350 for the same cash. You can spend that mo ey so many ways I think it's safer to just compare it to the models it competes with for the same buyers. Then again I'm just an Internet commenter so what do I know. However I've never seen a $39k XJ or G80
Well that I fully agree with. I would just think of the Lincoln or Cadenza being more of a comparison. However, I follow your point better now. I do agree this car is terrible. Although I thought this was based on the Solara and not the Camry?
Very tough review. I have no opinion because I have never driven one. I think it looks good in red. In most colors it looks like a snow plow.
You don't see too many old Jags or Genesis on the road. But let's be honest, we still see older Lexus on the road. They don't say Lexus is reliable for no reason..
fuck cargurus i love es300h cant beat it.
negative nancy
The ES does not compete with the G80 or G90. The vehicles are not in the same category. The main competition is the Avalon and other large FWD sedans. Before buying my ES last year, I test drove the competition and settled on this car due to the seats and overall comfort. There is no sporty pretenses in this car.. The GS and IS are better at that.
These reviewers are horrible. LMAO- "based on the Camry"..um no.
Great Review. This vehicle's main draw points are reliability and resale value.
Haaaahhh, this guy always hates on Lexus. Lol
Lexus haters much.
Best review that you've had yet. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it's likely a duck.
I look at that front end and think "Camry". Yes it's a little different but I don't want my Lexus looking so much like Camry.
One suggestion: please comment on the sound level.
This is a definite PASS for the money.
I think you're wanting the car to be something it's clearly not
This car is top of its class in the 2017 midsize luxury hybrid sedans. Only car that beats it is the Lexus GS Hybrid. Is this guy just a Toyota/Lexus hater?
Seems kinda bias from the get. U slammed that door hard. What did u expect🤦♂️
Thanks for the review, George Kennedy! You touched on all of my major car buying concerns! Plus, this video gave me a good impression of the test driving experience.
Gabriella McNevin don't take his word....his review was horseshit. This car is based on the Avalon platform, and it's a good car overall...the materials in the car are fabulous. I suggest wait for the next generation car it is miles ahead. These guys are all payed by these Germans... Like only they make good cars lexus is known for their craftsmanship and exclusivity.
Difference between 2016 vs 2017
Why is it matter the Door close sound? People are weird nowdays lol I only care about the driving sound inside the cabin . In the noise outside didn't come in much than it's good . Nothing to do with doors
Because when a door sounds hollow when you close it..it gives the impression there isn't much there in terms of safety and quality.
Yup Lexus should've consulted with you.... HATER
Based on the Avalon chassis not Camry.... Remote touch is garbage compared to the Germans or Koreans imho...
Boy this guy is very biased against the es who made him an expert 😂
Nit Picker😡👎🏽
You definitely dont make it sound like you were biased against Lexus es300h prior to reviewing this car.. You definitely didn't. And looks like you definitely did your homework when you mentioned ES300h is based on Toyota Camry platform.
Your observation of the ES's deficiency is on the money. At the end of the day, you're buying the ES for their reliability, not for their looks
This car is NOT in the same class as the XJ. g80? Maybe. Avalon? Of course. This car is best looked as a commuter car for those that want to drive something more upscale than a Prius.
Genesis? 😂😂😂😂😂
Complain more😅
A Camery on weed
