Raising a Raccoon

  • Raising Buster - One early June evening a little 5-6 week old Raccoon came into our lives. We have a property next to our house that was vacant for 9 years due to some probate issues when the owner passed away. A new owner began taking down trees, removing a shed and also gutting the inside. One night this little baby Raccoon clung to the bottom of a tree in our yard chattering up a storm. I believe the Raccoon family may have been taken away somehow within cut down trees, rubbish, or became separated from the mother who took the kits that she could find far away from the construction. I will never know what really happened. I left her almost 5-6 hours, but no mother came. Around midnight I picked her up with a small fishing net and put her in a live trap/cage that I was using to TNR (Trap Neuter/Spay and Return) feral cats. The intention was to try to find the mother the next night and let her go, which did not happen. We also found that she would not eat solid food and was getting very hungry. The next morning I took two very large Dog cages and combined them into an 8’X3’X3’ foot cage and we began to hand feed her KMR (special formula). We did this using a food syringe and small baby bottle for about 3-4 weeks until she started eating solid food. And once she began eating solid food she would eat almost everything we gave her. Raccoons are omnivores which helps them survive almost anywhere.
This was the most interesting animal that I have ever raised and I have had many species including dogs, cats, various small forest animals, reptiles and parrots during my life. Buster knew her name, she came when called, used a litter pan, played with toys and showed affection just like a dog or cat. She entertained us day after day when we came home from work and on the weekends. She was truly amazing. But Linda and I knew we could not keep her long term and decided to release her slowly at about 16 weeks old in our garage and the transition her to our back yard. We had a pet door installed in our garage to help with this transition, thanks Joe P. In the meantime I contacted a licensed animal rehabilitator for advice and that could take her if need be. I was advised to release her during the night and try to get her back into the garage in the morning until she hooked up with the other raccoons. There is another family that comes to our yard, a mother and 3 young coons that are a little older than Buster and we had hoped she would now have new buddies. The nightly release and morning return worked well at first as she would come to us when called and followed Linda to her pet door and go in. But after a few days we noticed that she did not want to play with other Raccoons and their nighty games and food hunt. All she wanted was her adopted human parents, Linda and Brad. We knew the time had come to give her up to a professional.
With a very heavy heart and some tears I took her to a rehabilitator who has a fantastic operation and an enclosure that rivals any small petting zoo. Buster had no choice but to meet other Raccoons. After she gets acclimated with her peers, she will be released with a small group in late October onto a private sanctuary with a large pond out on the eastern part of LI. They provide food nightly and strategically placed shelters. I guess this is little bittersweet as we were hoping she could be part of our other back yard Raccoon group and we could watch her come around at night. But this is the best for her under the circumstances. We enjoyed her for 4 months. We thank you Buster for this opportunity to learn that a baby Raccoon can become semi-domestic and tame. However, they are not suited as pets for the average person. They can be very destructive in a house and can become very grouchy during mating season. Also they should never be caged long term. Raccoons are meant to be free. God speed to you Buster….

My Loki had an injury to his hips at birth which is why I'll never release him. He wouldn't survive in the wild since he cannot climb well. He does however have free roam of my house, is minimally destructive and has a great life. ... Kudos to you for allowing your girl freedom once she was ready. Thankfully I have the time and energy (along with tough skin and fingers) to give my guy the best life possible with his circumstances...

I had a hard time judging her age, but I am guessing she was about 6 weeks old. She started eating solid food about two weeks after we found her. I started mixing kitten food with KMR at first, then moved on to fruit and cereal then nut mixes, but soon after she was into everything !!! as you can see from my video.

They're extremely social animals. I think it would have been fine to just let him come and go if you had tagged him so people would see he wasn't entirely wild.

What good people you are. We so enjoyed watching Buster's story unfold. Although you grew to love her and parting must have been so hard, you gave her a happy ending - her freedom. God bless you! Is there any update about her progress at the sanctuary? Wouldn't it be lovely if she became a momma!

Three days ago, I saved this poor baby raccoon. The mother got hit by a car and I could not let this poor baby to suffer. I went to store, bought KMR, did a lot of research about the right way to feed and take care him. But I also read about the roundworm that is extremely deadly for other pets and humans. There is not cure, or vaccine. Did you worry about the roundworm when you were taking care your raccoon? Can you give me any opinion on this matter. I am very scared but I would not abandon this baby. I will do what I have to do to save him. But any information in this matter would greatly appreciated. Please, help me with your advice. How do you deal with the roundworm problem? The raccoon I saved is only 28 oz, probably 10 inch long. May be 4-5 weeks old.
    Thank you. Sincerely Naira

I was not that concerned because of her age. Also, I was
very careful how I handled her litter area.
There are products that can help eliminate the worms but I forget the
names. My suggestion is to bring him to
a reputable vector animal rehabilitator as soon as possible. Since you
only have one he will bond with you very quickly and that is not good. I made the mistake of keeping Buster too long
thinking I would let her go within my backyard where I found her. That did not work well as she became too
trusting in humans. The rehabilitator took her and let her bond
with other raccoons before letting them go in a wooded area away from people, and
made sure there was supplement food supplied.
      Good Luck.

You treat them with dog wormer from a vet. Over the counter stuff is weak. You need a good broad spectrum wormer. We use pyrantel regularly on all of our rehabs to combat round worms. They all have them from birth. Standard sanitation practices and you will be fine

You must have not viewed the entire video or read the story. The mother most likely was taking away when contractors took away the shed next door to my house. She had no mother when she came into my yard, and I saved her life and she was set free when she was old enough. Please take the time to view the video before commenting.
