    * UPDATE BELOW* This is a Blind Raccoon. He is at least 5 years old and has been coming to our house for about 5 years. There is something wrong with his tapetum lucidum. His eyes shine bright green during the day. He is at least partially blind. He walks into things. He is afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow.
He is out and about during the day. He comes to our house for food early in the morning usually around 6-9AM. He often returns for seconds and sometimes comes back for thirds. His bottom lip is missing so we feed him soft pasta noodles soaked in cream of chicken soup. We often cut up small pieces of hot dogs, ham, pork, etc. He refuses to eat canned cat/dog food.
(And NO, its NOT Rabies or distemper. He would have died and NOT lived for as long as he did. And Raccoons can be out during the daytime. Sometimes they are out in daytime, especially during baby season. So just because you see a Raccoon out during daytime does NOT mean it has rabies)
Recently (late October 2014) 2 black kittens have been hanging around our yard. And they became close with the Blind Raccoon. They would magically appear when he would come for food. So they figured out that Blind Raccoon = FOOD. So they would appear when the Blind Raccoon (and sometimes other raccoons) would show up.
    And then THiS happened today....
    (November 13, 2014)
Did you see PART ONE of this video? It isn't as cute but it's still amazing! Here is the link.
    • Blind Raccoon and his ...
    ** UPDATE **
(July, 7, 2017) - Sorry for not updating!
The Raccoon was around for at least 5 years before the kittens magically appeared in the woods. We don't think that he was totally blind, but his vision was VERY impaired in some way. We "think" that he may have been able to see shapes and things moving. And memory of where things were located. If something was out of place he would sometimes run into it. He would get scared easily. We never were able to figure out why his eyes were like that, even after doing a lot of research and asking our vet. But he was a miracle. And i am so glad that i had a camera with me and was able to capture this amazing one in a lifetime moment.
Sadly Blind Raccoon passed away sometime in June of 2015. (6 months after my mom and 15 yr old cat did). We don't know how he passed away but we hope that it was somewhere peaceful in the woods behind our house. We took care of him for more than 5 years.
The average lifespan for a raccoon in the wild is only about 1-3 years. So a blind/handicapped Raccoon surviving at least 5 years is a pretty long time. He was a miracle.
I tamed the wild kittens (that was painful) and WAS going to send them to PAWS Chicago but after putting in all of that effort, loss of flesh and blood WE KEPT THEM & they now live inside with our HUGE other cat Squirt. They officially became ours on December 14, 2014 when we got them fixed & chipped. PAWS did it for FREE because we guaranteed that they would have a forever home. They estimated that they were about 6 months old.
Turned out that I needed the black kittens as much as they needed me. Taming them helped me slightly cope with the loss of my mom and my 15 year old cat within 9 days of each other.
Before mom came down with the flu that ended up sending her to the ER via ambulance on Christmas Eve of 2014, she said that she wanted to keep the kittens.
Sadly she did NOT get a chance to spend time with them. She held one of them once, but they were still not "tame" yet.
Dad did NOT want to feed or deal with the cats. He didn't want any more animals. Mom made him capture them them because she "didn't want them to get cold" and even when he did not want to keep them she wanted to keep them. I wish she was able to have spent actual "hands on" time with them.
It makes me sad, but she would have LOVED to watch them. They are very different than any cats that we have ever had. They use A LOT of tail communication. It's so weird. And they play fight constantly. They are still a little skittish & when I am not home they often hide.
Although Blind Raccoon is Gone, YOU CAN KEEP UP WITH THE BLACK CATS and his other animal friends here on his NEW FACEBOOK PAGE!

Stray house cats are not wild animals they are feral domestic animals and a horrible imbalance on wildlife especially rabbits. UPDATE 1-4-2020: The cats are doing very well. One takes care of me and my health issues and makes sure i get my medication (i take about 12-15 medications) throughout the day and he comforts me when i am not feeling well. (I slipped on 2-3 icy stairs on my front porch and fell and landed where my head and neck connected causing a Traumatic Brain Injury and Dysautonomia/POTS and a few other health issues). So the Brother cat takes care of me and DEMANDS me to take my medicine! And the Sister cat likes to escort me to the bathroom even when i don't have to go and she likes to walk ON me. They are both really funny and pretty weird. I try to take photos and post them on their facebook page to keep people updated.

A book from my childhood as well...such a beautiful story, loved the characters as well, in fact have loved raccoons ever since....Sterling Norths book 'Rascal' had a profound influence over me as well when I was even younger, when I was in my mid twenties I raised two babies til they could be released to a wildlife rehabilitator. They would then be safely adapted to returning to their wild roots. We had found them along the highway, they had been down to skin and bones. We looked for their mother for a long time and in the end came to the unfortunate conclusion she may have been hit by a vehicle on the highway, even though we never found her. They were curious, intelligent, playful, adventurous lit'l critters. To have been in their presence and having been a part of their tiny lit'l lives was almost magical. I immensely enjoyed watching brother and sister play and had much respect for them. Trash pandas???....Nah, no way...there is so much more to these beings...they were quite incredible. And I will always remember these stories of my youth...They transported me to a different place- a wild place, on their level. Because of those stories I have a different respect for animals that I still have til this day, and I will always be a better human being for it. 💞

I have multiple sclerosis & my cats always take care of me. They are a little weird too. I think cats innately know somehow when there is sickness. All cats are a little bit weird but so kind & caring. Be well. Having a chronic illness that others likely can not understand is the first battle then the emotional grief that others in the world have no point of reference to understand is the second. Stay positive. Stay tough. When the devil whispers, "you aren't strong enough to overcome this storm", whisper back, " I am the storm".

They come out in day a lot if hungry. He's blind. That's so sweet you care for him. I raised an orphan. Taught her to dig worms and kill bugs and forge. Fed her. Had my garage set up as a play room and ladders to rafters so she could be safe. I tried to keep her indoors but she wasn't having it. She lived 9 months and was hit by a car. I miss her. She was the best animal companion ever. Her mom died same way. Hit by a car and her siblings were trapped. I learned who had traps and checked them a few times a night. Released a lot of squirrels and skunks and even a cat. I do notike when people live near wildlife and then want to do away with the wildlife. We are here to care for the creatures, not to kill them.

I also could not help noticing that the one you raised was not killed by worms but was run over by a car. Your plan to impart critical knowledge into the head of that little raccoon appears to have been faulty, don't you think.

BUT THAT BIG WE CALL GRANDDADDYS OR GRANDMAMAS AS THEY ARE PROBABLY CLOSE TO TEN YEARS OR OLDER AND STAY HIDDEN MOST OF THE TIME. AND PROBABLY RELATED TO MOST OF THE OTHER RACCOONS IN THE AREA. AFTER 20 POUNDS, THEY CAN AND HAVE KILLED ABOUT ANY SIZE DOG THEY WISH TO, JUST BY GETTING THE DOG IN THE WATER AND DROWNING IT BY COVERING NOSE AND MOUTH.

I am now working on what I figure is the 4th or even 5th generation of raccoons that live in the street storm drains by my house. Mom and Dad has many time brought out their babies for our approval as well. They feed out of the outside cat dish and we just leave extra for them. This started many years ago, with just one fat old guy who would waddle around, then grew into the local gang of masked thieves on the nightly raid, with as many as 6 in tow. Never have I attempted to handle or capture any and allways just let em do their racoon thing's of eating snakes in the garden , an occasional tomato or corn ear, along with cat food that is well supplied. They give us hours of watching em play on the lawn and in the garden, and have even accepted the tiny dog we have ,that they must think is a joke for a racoon !

This video deserves some kind of wholesome reward and my heart felt so good when I read that you kept the 2 little guardian angels

They are really good and very weird cats! They have their weird quirks and are completely bonded only to me.

I'm not a big fan of raccoons in general but when I see any animal struggling with disabilities it breaks my heart & the tears start flowing..... Bless his heart, I'm glad that he has some.loyal friends looking after him....

The cat even stretched and made pat pat sounds on the steps, showing him where they were

Thank you for taking care of such a disabled raccoon. And for taking in those amazing kittens. I would do the same. I have a rescued Chihuahua, 3 rescued cats I got as kittens and a feral adult I am taming to come inside. I also feed the raccoons in my Los Angeles neighborhood along with the possums.
