Before about 1993, I just had an amp and a chorus pedal. Then I got a Digitech GSP-21. I bought several other multi-effects + amp modeling units over the years. I didn’t buy another pedal until 2015. The reason I started buying pedals was that there were pedals that did things my multi-effects units couldn’t. So, these days, I have both options to choose depending on need. For most people, an all-in-one unit is probably the best answer. Especially as the multi-effects units today have more flexibility, can integrate a pedal or two into their chain, and get new features regularly through firmware updates. But, yeah, there are still times for some of us when putting together a specific set of pedals for a specific purpose can still make sense.
I was a pedal junkie for years, and then 2 years ago I bought an Axe FX (the big rack mounted unit). I spent most of the last 2 years discovering the sounds in it; there are still universes of sound that I haven't explored. For most of that time I didn't need to buy new pedals but, inevitably, there were enough new products on the market that I started to wonder what the latest things might sound like. Last month I joined a jamming group. I put together a jam board, built around a Boss GT-1000 CORE plus a few of my favorite pedals. It is portable, it sounds great, it gets any sounds I need, and at every jam one of the other guitar players comes over and asks me about my set-up. It reminded me that, once you leave the world of gear heads and gear video enthusiasts (and there is nothing wrong with being a gear enthusiast, except possibly the cost) there is a whole world of players who know nothing about any of that and just make do with what they have. Anything can make the sounds; go with what makes you happy. I am extremely grateful to be able to afford both.
I fall squarely into the "Simplicity and Variety" camp. I completely understand your reasons for the unique tones scenario using the pedals and amp in a box set up. For my needs, I love the convenience of plug and go once I have my tones dialed in. I don't write/record my own original music, so that influences what I choose a lot as well. God bless and Merry Christmas my friend 🎄🎁🎸
Hi, thank you for sharing! Yes....that' always a debate...nice and easy or complex but maybe more "personal"...I have to say that I have changed my mind a lot of time...and maybe there is not a definite choice or answer... Thank you!
Something to add: although I'm actually planning on giving up on individual stomp-boxes in the near future, there is also an extra benefit to _analogue_ pedals specifically - that they tend to retain their value. If you buy an analogue pedal used, you can expect to sell it again for the same price plus inflation. Digital pedals and multi-fx however tend towards worthlessness as each subsequent generation outclasses the previous at for the same price new.
I started with Pedals and an Amp, then added an Amp Sim, and then moved to a Modeler. This was due in large part due to the inability to save carefully honed tones. Initially, was concerned about not having a personal/unique sound when using a Modeler. But, I have found that to not be the case, as I dial in all my Presets to my taste and preferences.
Hi Leo, I like your video, although I am not sure I agree with the conclusion. I think you can still have your own tone with amp modellers (not only with an “amp in a box” kind of pedals) - but I’d say it is quite fun to mess up with favourite pedals rather than using an amp and effect processors. I personally love to use my Keeley D&M overdrive and boost in conjunction with the XH stomp XL (sometimes with EHX superego+ and a loop pedal) because it’s easy for me to dial in the tone on the Keeley overdrive than digging into the XH stomp menus… but it’s just me I think.
Thank you so much for sharing and it's totally fine if you don't agree indeed! Different opinions enrich our conversation! My point was that if you use pedals, maybe you can add a pedal with a very unique tone, that is not available in an amp modeling pedalboard. Thank you also for sharing your settings!!!
I love the all in one modeler for convenience and flexibility, especially in a one guitar band. I use the GT 1000. If there are 2 guitars in a heavier band and the other guitarist is using a head and 4x12 then I would probably do the same because in my experience it is hard to compete against a real 1/2 stack set up with a modeler. It seems the headroom is usually much greater with the real deal. Great video and thoughts Leo
I love your videos, Leo. Practical and down to earth. I had a Boss GT-1000...twice! lol I also tried other digital devices, like the ISP Theta Pro DSP. Amazing device. The second time I used the GT-1000 was in 4CM with my amp. I also tried a Fractal FX8 MKII. But I eventually recognized that what I was always missing was the immediacy, and other aspects, of analog tone. After many rig changes I am currently using and all analog signal path. My amp is the AMT Electronics SH-100-4R. It's an all analog 4-channel 100-watt amp in a 1U rack format. I have a pedalboard with a few pedals controlled by a Carl Martin Octa-Switch "The Strip". I have a couple of unique pedals there, agreeing with the point you made about doing that and obtaining your own unique tone. Currently the only digital device I am using is the TC Electronic Flashback II Mini. But it has analog dry through. I am very happy with my rig now. I love my all analog tone. Thanks again for doing this video and especially bringing up the all analog option. That is my choice after not being able to bond with the digital gear.

Using the GT-1000, I am able to use the Send feature to add any pedal. So for me, unique tones are achievable with the all in one. I find the all analog capability a salient point to achieve zero latency. Fortunately, the low latency of the GT-1000 is close enough to zero to make the feel of playing natural when working with a rhythm section. Thank you again for the latency videos! I could never understand why the Neural unit had too much lag. Once you mentioned that the entire chain of equipment needs to be considered, I found that my digital mixer added 0.8ms and on top of the Quad's significant lag, it was unusable. Since the GT-1000 is under 1 ms at all times, I do not have any issues and it sounds amazing.
Hi Adam, thank you so much, I'm really happy to have been of some help: thank you for taking the time to let me know!!! Thank you also for sharing your opinions and your findings....good point about the possibility to add pedals in the loop! Thank you!
Your testing has become an important part of understanding the appropriate rig for many players. You have successfully quantified digital latency. This opens the door to understanding how analog players can gracefully adapt to digital advancements and the advent of the quiet stage. There is also natural latency introduced by the distance between the monitor/cab and the musician or between musicians. Classical orchestras get around the speed of sound issues with a conductor to sync tempo. I am hoping you can look at monitor/cab placements vs. in-ears and the intricacies of total latency, both digital and distance related. It's a lot to unpack. Again, grazie mille!@@LeoGibsonGtr
Personally, I like the ability to store presets across as many effects as possible. This is true even for amps as I feel that lots of time and effort has gone into tweaking settings that disappear with manual knobs.
I think a modeller can be both a good and a bad thing. Presets/scenes etc can be awesome for nailing tones, but then also you can get Option paralysis and spend more time fiddling instead of playing. I like the idea of an amp in a box as it’s super easy to tweak settings. Plus as most guitarists, suffer from GAS, they can keep adding different pedals to their set up!
Thanks, Leo! For me, the most important things are tone and quality of effects. If I can get better tone with some like like FM9 or QC (and if it will cover all the basic effects with good quality) vs amp in a box. I'll probably stick with a modeler for convenience of patches and switching several effects at once, as well as variety. But sound quality and latency are most important to me. My current solution is a GT-10 with a Blackstar HT-Dual in the FX loop, so I'm due for an upgrade. 😀
I prefer a combination of both. I really like using the Boss MS3 with other dirt pedals in the loops and the two notes cab M+ since the MS3 does not provide IR capabilities. Integration of both analog and digital provide the best of both words. I am not concerned about latency since I mostly stay in stomp mode. Imho single pedals will provide a greater return over time. Great subject and presentation!
Hello Leo. Another very good episode. Personally, depending on the situation, I use a tube combo laney, plus 4CM Boss GT 100, or Ampero One connected to the amplifier's effects loop, or only Ampero. Now I'm also going to try playing only on Boss GT 100 with Ampero connected to the loop, I want to place it at the end of the chain as an IR column... And besides, I bought Ampero thanks to you, after seeing how it was compared to other multi effects. Thank you for your helpful hardware reviews. God bless you. Thanks for everything.
Ciao Leo, Do you have any plans to review the Line 6 HX One? I would be very curious to know your take on it as the reviews seem very divisive. Tanti auguroni di Buon Natale e Buon Anno! Fa
Cheers Leo! I'm planning to try a backwards approach for messing around at home- putting real amps into my pedal board. Plan is to use the two fx loops from gt1000 and put the preamp of marshall jvm in one and peavy valve king in the other so I can make a signal chain and have real amp, amp blocks sort of. It might be not worth it but gonna have a fun afternoon trying it! Might even to be able to go really over the top and get the boss to be able to control the marshall with midi if it's not too confusing.
Interesting...kind of an hybrid setup...thank you for sharing!!! Just one suggestion: please verify if you need a load box for your amp not to break the power amp. Thank you!
@@LeoGibsonGtrTt depends how far I want to go (and a bit of how much gear I have lol), for the Marshall, I can either take preamp (even with amp on standby) and not use the poweramp, or I can use a loadbox and take the poweramp as well, same for the peavy. I have found in the past though that the loadbox (TwoNotes Captor 1st one) despite being reactive doesn't really translate the power section that well to me, so I was thinking of starting with just taking the preamps and hoping the output section and AIRD stuff sorts it out. I was also curious if I could do another weird rig, using the effects loops again but to insert a mic and a music player to make patches for easy small gigs all processed in the unit and then just straight to front of house.
I use both solutions. I Have my 'live' pedalboard which I normally use with an amp, but for practice at home, use with an Amp Academy, so I can integrate with my studio setup, I also have a Helix LT - mainly because it wasn't too expensive, and is a lot of fun with lots of variety.
Hi Edison, they are both good unit, with the IR2 less expensive and the Lion almost double the price. Here you can check out my full comparison of the two units, with also the Iridium: ruclips.net/video/C9J15uOhzzE/видео.html I hope you enjoyed!!
Do you consider ToneX in this category of amp in a box ? Although it seems like captures are very specific with ToneX to a specific amp, guitar, and distortion level so more limited ?
Thanks for your videos - love them! I am looking for an amp in a pedal to add to my Boss SY-1000. It is very similar to the GT-1000 but has only one "amp block" and there is no option to load 3rd party IRs. I think I will buy an amp pedal and connect it with the fx-loop on the SY-1000. I am not sure which amp in a box will give the best results.
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the videos!!! There is plenty of options...therefore your unsureness is comprehensible....I hope that my videos could help you in your choice. Thank you!
@@LeoGibsonGtr I just really like your content. I really enjoy your composition videos and the fact you’re doing it very technical and accurate while keeping it simple to understand. I hope you’ll make a video about the new Kemper and I hope to see a comparison between it and the TONEX pedal.
Well, truth be spoken, I disagree with the thought that pedalboards are a simpler solution. You got hundreds of parameters to dial while creating a useful tone for rehearsal / live instead of just stepping on your TS-9 and just adjust the vol pot. There are (many) times while playing live that you need that extra bite from your distortion, so you bend over it and push the treble knob. There is no way this can be done with a preset, well not in 3 seconds 🤷♂️ I totally understand that pedalboards can be “easier” to work with, because of the myriad options and the relatively compact size. BUT, if you know what you’re looking for tone-wise a small board with real pedals end an adequate amp / mic sim can do wonders. So in my humble opinion the digital pedalboards provide comfort, not simplicity 😊 Thank you Leo for another really useful video 💯
Hi Leo, been watching your videos for a while now, big fan. I just had a question, which amp modeler sounds the closest to a real tube amp, preferably one with a wide variety of amps, and also under 500 bucks. It's been 2 years since I've been looking and listening to one and I still can't decide, I'm too poor to buy a real amp, thank you.
Thank you so much!!! Well, I try not to give "Black or white" answer....as also the sound is subjective...and I'm afraid that you can purchase the wrong unit. I would say that checking out the more sound section you can check out which one is the best for you. In the 500 price range....you have a lot of choice...you have NUX MG30, Ampero Stomp, BOSS GX 100....all great units. Than you!
Thank you for your comparison! What our your thoughts on the best modeler for having 2 separate amps in a wet/dry configuration? I am looking to have two separate cabs or FRFR speakers going for each amp.
Waiting for the Nux MG30 MK3! I am not a pedal guy because I mainly use clean, reverb, delay and a bit overdrive, I am not am modeler guy with all thse settings but I do not like to have too many pedals and wires so I do not have choice
I have a analog pedal board using mostly MXR pedals . I brought a Headrush Prime . IT DOES NOT REPLACE THE PEDALS ! Shimmer Octave Delay not even close to the pedals . Plus the clean sound is not good . But why not using the Freidman IRX in this demo ? Love u show 🎉Best there is
Hi, thank you for sharing your findings!!! Unfortunately I don't have the IR-x...and hear in Europe is basically not available since its release... Thank you so much, and I'm really happy that you appreciate the videos!!!
And what about tube/valve preamps with built in IRs like Friedman Ir-X or Shift Line Twin? I’m currently have Nux Amp Academy but I’m thinking about getting pedalboard with tube preamp for analog warm sound
I totally agree with your conclusion. I sold my rig a long time ago and was thinking about building a new one around the amp academy, but when the Headrush Prime released I decided to save up and buy one of those instead. The price would be about the same, but having access to captures made by other ppl and the ability to run vocals through as well actually saves me money and gives me more versatility. I haven't bought it yet, but maybe Santa will be nice and give me the last little bit I need to make the purchase next year. 🤞
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also I subscribe to the family channel have a wonderful happy holiday season also a fantastic new year ❤😊 leo
Thank you so much for your feedback and I'm really happy that you appreciate the video! Than you also for joining our community: it means a lot to me! Thank you!!!
I have been weighing these two options for a while. Curious to know if you included the cost of the pedalboard, power supply and cables in the cost of the versions?
Hi, good point! Actually in the prices those things are excluded...even if I have not done a "perfect sum"...I mean the price of each pedal varies from shop to shop and from euros to dollars...so it's an estimate. Thank you for pointing it out!
Amp in a box is modular that is one more advantage, if you are playing at home or band rehrsal or gig you can take less or more pedals, while modelers you have only one option to bring everything.
Hi, for me the amp in the box with pedals wins on everything apart from price within a limited budget unless you already have a pedalboard and some pedals. Amp in a box with pedals for me has a better sound and is easy to dial in, make an adjustment. They are the real life pedals and their settings can be seen at a glance and easily amended on the fly. New pedals can be added or swapped with other pedals over time. If a pedal develops a fault it can easily be removed or replaced until possibly repaired (especially the older analog ones) Multi effects all in one units are a jack of all trades but often a master of none. The sounds are a simulation of the pedals, it may need updating on a computer, may need the software downloaded and installed, an account set up, the firmware updated. Learning how to use the software and the unit. Power supplies for units in general are not small or as robust for live playiing. There maybe limitations of the number of effects you can use. Some models of the pedals may not sound as good as the real ones especially fuzzes. Often the preloaded patches have to be tweaked, make your own patches, the volume level can differ between patches and can take time to correct. If it develops a fault, it maybe difficult getting it repaired and the whole unit could be unusable. After a few years it will have devalued more than the real pedals. After time if you want a newer unit, it will be back to square one downloading software, learning how to use it and setting up patches again. Muti effects can offer more sounds and effects (but more than I'd ever actual use live) usually at a cheaper price but can take a lot of frustrated time tweaking and menu diving.
There is no wrong answer here. In the end its what works for you. I use an Axe fx rack as my main gigging/studio solution as it can do almost anything (The modulation and time based effects are better than any pedal). I do have however another small board with a Helix stomp, Empress effects Zoia and a Source Audio midi controller, which can do pretty much everything the axe fx can do (and nearly as well), as a back up and also at gigs where space is at a premium.
Just as a follow up. The only effect modellers don't do very well is fuzz. If I need a fuzz sound I'll use an analogue pedal especially if I'm using the volume knob on the guitar to clean it up a bit.
If the modeller dies, you have nothing. If one of your pedals dies, you still have other pedals and you can play. I cannot imagine all of your pedals breaking at the same time (unless we're talking about a catastrophe of some kind, like a fire, or flooding, etc.) I like the convenience of the modeller, I'm just scared that it's gonna die as soon as it comes out of the warranty period. And the stuff is not exactly cheap...
If you mean some demo songs ... this video is just a conversation, providing you the links to other videos where you can hear the solutions in action. Thank you!

Integration of both analog and digital provide the best of both words. I am not concerned about latency since I mostly stay in stomp mode. Imho single pedals will provide a greater return over time. Great subject and presentation!
Thank you, I'm really happy that you appreciate the video!
Thank you also for sharing your findings!
Cool video mate!
Thank you so much Jon, really appreciated!
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you appreciate the videos and to have been of some help!!!
Thank you also for sharing your findings!!!

Ciao Leo,
Do you have any plans to review the Line 6 HX One? I would be very curious to know your take on it as the reviews seem very divisive.
Tanti auguroni di Buon Natale e Buon Anno!
Fa
Ciao,
I don't have the One....maybe if I'm able to get a second hand occasion....thank you for your suggestion!
Buon Natale e Buon Anno anche te!!!
I use and like the Line 6 Hell-x Lt. It provides me MIDI and Line 6 Propriety digital connections to JTV69 and Powercab+.
Hi, thank you very much for sharing your set up!
Hi, thank you for sharing!
Yes, interesting point about the "practicing" rig
Thank you!
Hi Leo,
For Hendrix edge of breakup tones with a Strat, would you take the Boss IR-2 or the UA Lion?
I can only take one.
Thanks
Hi Edison,
they are both good unit, with the IR2 less expensive and the Lion almost double the price. Here you can check out my full comparison of the two units, with also the Iridium: ruclips.net/video/C9J15uOhzzE/видео.html
I hope you enjoyed!!
Hello Leo, please do a comparison between IR-2 and Amp Academy for us cheapos
Hi, thank you for your suggestion!
This is something I would like to do...
I have an amp academy, a variety of analog amp in a box sims, plus an HX stomp. I love my amp in a box pedals.
Hi, thank you for sharing! Yes, the academy is a nice unit
Thanks!
Do you consider ToneX in this category of amp in a box ? Although it seems like captures are very specific with ToneX to a specific amp, guitar, and distortion level so more limited ?
Yes, I think it's finally an amp in a box unit!
Thank you for your comment and your question!
Thank you!

I just really like your content.
There is no way this can be done with a preset, well not in 3 seconds 🤷♂️
I totally understand that pedalboards can be “easier” to work with, because of the myriad options and the relatively compact size.
BUT, if you know what you’re looking for tone-wise a small board with real pedals end an adequate amp / mic sim can do wonders. So in my humble opinion the digital pedalboards provide comfort, not simplicity 😊
Thank you Leo for another really useful video 💯
You are welcome and thank you so much for sharing your opinion and your findings!
Than you!
@LeoGibsonGtr I think I'm going with the Nux MG30. Thanks again! Keep doing what you do. Every pedal you play sounds amazing through your fingers 👍
Thank you!
Hi, thank you for sharing!
This is a question that bugs me for months. Thanks Leo
You are welcome, I'm happy that the video is interesting!!
Preamp walrus Acs1
Chorus boss
Strymon blu sky reverb e va bene così.
Ottimo spunto!!! Grazie perl la condivisione!
In effetti è un approccio furbo e condivisibile.
Grazie!!!
And what about tube/valve preamps with built in IRs like Friedman Ir-X or Shift Line Twin? I’m currently have Nux Amp Academy but I’m thinking about getting pedalboard with tube preamp for analog warm sound
Yes, that's in the category pedalboards built around amp in a box pedals (like the Revolt).
Thank you!
Thanks!
WOW, Daniel, thank you so much, it really means a lot to me!!!!
Hi, thank you for sharing your experience and your findings!

Hi, good point... thank you for sharing! Modularity is an aspect to evaluate...thank you for pointing it out!
I believe nowadays more and more players are choosing convenience
Hi, thank you for sharing!
Convenience and easiness, are for sure very important!
If a pedal develops a fault it can easily be removed or replaced until possibly repaired (especially the older analog ones)
Multi effects all in one units are a jack of all trades but often a master of none.
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your experience and your findings!
Of course all are interesting considerations that enrich our conversation.
Thans!
Analog all the way! (As much as we can, of course)
😀...I'm making a video for you....I hope to be able to upload it within the end of this year...stay tuned!!!
Thank you!
@LeoGibsonGtr You are the man! Looking forward to it!
Thank you!
Thanks!
When you want pedals or processor… Buy both🎉
😀
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your experience and your findings! interesting point about the fuzz....
Thank you!
All in one pedal board for simplicity
Thank you for sharing!
How about Kemper Profiler Player?
Interesting product...it's coming to my studio...😀

I look forward to your report!
If the modeller dies, you have nothing. If one of your pedals dies, you still have other pedals and you can play. I cannot imagine all of your pedals breaking at the same time (unless we're talking about a catastrophe of some kind, like a fire, or flooding, etc.)
I like the convenience of the modeller, I'm just scared that it's gonna die as soon as it comes out of the warranty period. And the stuff is not exactly cheap...
Hi,
good point...reliability is important!
❤
Thank you!!!
"Farter more" 🤣 You can go full analogue, there is the DSL Simplifier.
Thank you for sharing!!!
