A note: usually, most high CR homebrew monsters will have some form of expertise in athletics or acrobatics. This is a consideration, depending on frequency which you encounter homebrew enemies in your campaign or WM server. Also, the fact that telekinesis restrained persists even after teleportation is a big bonus to it in higher tier combat.
Nice review! Yeah same here = telekinesis usually works better in my preference of character builds plus when cooperating with my group, but ... i can appreciate a creative use of Bigby's Hand for certain characters and situations
Telekineses for sorcerers (because of quicken telekineses giving two uses on the first round), bigby's hand for wizards and neither for bards as there are better spell secrets out there.
This is so good man, I've been torn between the two for the last 2 weeks, I was leaning just a bit on Bigby's, but I didn't realize the restrained issue. I guess the way grapple works in Dnd always bummed me out and I still think it as inflicting restrained, but it's not! Please do more of these deep dives!
Agreed with everything you said here. my pick is also telekinesis. being a sorc guy, this makes sense as sorc's have strong bonus actions and can do the whole 2 telekinesis in 1 turn via quicken spell. bards would be picking telekinesis as well due to jack of all trades and BI consuming their bonus action. however, imo, bards should skip both spells and just get a summon like summon draconic/celestial or wall of force. bigby's hand is better on wizards but much like bards, wizards will generally be using wall of force or a summon for that 5th level slot. one last benefit of telekinesis is that there isn't any visible magical effect which makes it great for stealth missions/ambushes.
Hey just wanted to say I think you're fantastic and do an amazing job. I find your analysis and measured approach second to none. Keep up the good work!
Great video! I think you really made a great point about the ultimate decision being build-dependent. For bards and sorceries who want to use their bonus action for other things on almost every round, telekinesis is the better choice. For casters like warlocks and wizards who would rather use their action for an effective blast every round, using bigby’s is more effective for a bonus action.
You had me sold on Telekinesis, until I remembered I'm a Bladesinger. You had that one the wrong way around I think, sure it's a bonus action to activate the bladesong, but it's an action for attack(cantrip+attack pretty good) and that's more likely to come up repeatedly. I love your deepdive videos and would like to thank you for opening my eyes to the advantage of speed. Mobile is a must on any melee character for me now.
I think the fact the bigbys hand Is much better if you have a reliable action like as a fathomless warlock or a blade singer because it uses your bonus action where telekenisis uses your action Edit: I wrote this before the conclusion
Excellent analysis as always! You changed my mind on these spells. Are you going to continue the series of the Lv 20 Bloodborne One shot Battle breakdowns? I really enjoyed those.
Nice analysis, I think BH wins for me but I think its related to what I've seen done with it vs Telekinesis. Having said/stated this, I am currently playing a character that provided we play long enough or that he doesn't die will have access to Telekinesis for free, so hopefully I can take the spell for a spin. Take care all.
I think Telekinesis wins this, you can take equipment by force. Items the big bad is trying to get. etc Disarming is a variant rule, or a battlemaster near exclusive figures a spellcaster could do it anyway.
hey bilbron question on how you would rule or if you've found a JC input on telekinesis on this matter: what happens to a creature held in the air by telekinesis/bigby;s grasping hand if they are force moved/teleported out of the range of telekinesis/out of reach of bigby's grasping hand? the way i rule this is that telekinesis is broken since they are out of the range of the effect and thus they fall. for bigby's grasping hand, the grapple is broken and they fall. you?
If they're out of range, I don't see how the TK wouldn't be broken, and I think BH is broken by any teleport even if within range since the hand didn't teleport and is generating the effect.
@@Bilbrons-and-Dragons great we're on the same page. now follow up on TK. TK has a text that says they are restrained until end of your next turn. if someone is force moved/teleported out of TK range (TK is broken), are they still restrained until the end of your next turn?
I'd like to point something out, since your interpretation is that grasping hand isn't slowed down by dragging due to it not being a creature and therefore not having a movement speed. If you take it the letter, you'll reach the conclusion that only creatures can drag grappled targets in the first place, therefore moving the Bigby's Hand would instead fall into the rules for breaking a grapple, not dragging the creature. An effect (you moving the hand) would remove the grappled creature (which would stay in place) from the reach of the grappler. It is my belief that you hafe to instead use forceful hand to move the target after it is grappled. Forceful hand very speficially states that the hand aways stays within 5 feet of the target, which means it would maintain a grapple if it had already been initiated Honestly, it has to be one or the other. Either the hand moves at half speed by dragging or it has to use forceful hand to move, otherwise it is just objectively better than Telekinesis and I don't think that was intended
Great analysis and love both spells. My question is regarding that you said you more often than not "have great uses for you bonus action and only cantrip on your action". Could you tell me what these Bonus action uses are as I always struggle to find good uses for BA. I always end up with spiritual weapon & Misty step or animate objects/bigby's hand.
What options are better than Bigby's Hand for grappling? Bigby's has a +8 to grapple, has advantage to grapple a medium or smaller target, and can grapple a creature that flies or is huge. It's also very durable if you invest in Constitution, and gets more HP with every character level. Tasha's summons are awful at grappling, mostly medium-sized, and extremely fragile. There is no comparison.
None? I said there are better options for all of the Bigby's options EXCEPT for Grappling... which is the reason you take Bigby's, to Grapple creatures with Legendary Resistances.
Not really much to do for an optimizer. It's a basic Ranger with its progression path laid out. All of the real choices come down to in-game piloting. The optimization options are whether you choose a strong race or not, Sharpshooter+Archery or a weaker combat style, and good spells or weaker ones. I suppose multiclassing is technically another option, but if you're going to go straight Ranger, Drakewarden is a good subclass to do it with. Plus I can't think of anything that a straight Dw Ranger is lacking. Or at least, nothing that it could get from a mutilclass dip.
It is not really easy for me, I cannot consider myself as an expert, but by itself it is not very easy to practice, I would be much better if helped by someone who is present. Greetings from northern Italy, from the Alps. 🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂
I'd love to see a Bilbron necromancer guide! With all the summoning and broken combos, would be sick.
I strongly agree with all the words of Keegan!!!!!
Wish: Animal Shapes.
One of my favs. Would love to see a wild version.

Super informative and learned A LOT! As a nearly Warlock exclusive player, helps me appreciate Great Old One's access to Telekinesis.
Excellent analysis! And I like that you pitched these two spells against each other, well done.
Dude these deep dives are straight fire 🔥!
Another!!!
Seriously tho changes my whole DnD life!
Your Deep Dives are always excellent.

Telekinesis + distant spell is surprisingly fun

Same with the fact that he said cast telekinesis and healing word which you can only cast a spell and a cantrip on one turn
RAW, the Bard's Jack of all Trades, applies to both spells.
So, keep it in mind.
I was already leaning towards Telekinesis for my "psychic" Bard, but now I'm convinced.

Yes! Back with another deep dive. So good. What's been up lately?
We're working on a skills tier list and races tier list. Stay tuned!
