Album: ARS ANTIQUA, Crònica d’un viatge medieval
Video: Gaston Phébus, livre de la chasse (XIV century)
    / musicamedievale

This first album of the trilogy dedicated to Ramon Llull , "Conversion, study and contemplation," illustrates the youth of Ramon Llull, devoted to sensual pleasures to profane love and the cultivation of the troubadour lyric, seen through the prism of the convert who has left the vanities of the world. It includes a selection of representative pieces of some of the main musical genres that were current at the time of Ramon Llull as well as some of its most representative authors. A musical journey that accompanies the early stages of the life of Llull from the moment he begins to unfold the radical change that will take you to the intellectual illumination, which attributed a divine origin, and that will lead to the Ars offers

Listening to these inspiring song clips sends you vividly into a time zone of days of chivalry and minstrel of old. 🥰

Infinitely so. Not even a competition. I would rather listen to nothing than a morning radio show, this I am actually grateful to be able to hear. We take it so for granted, it is amazing we have access to such a wealth of worthwhile music now, for free even. Even if most people don't appreciate it.

Thank you! I have been very drawn to Catalonian history...and of course, all beginning with legendary Montserrat Caballe. From USA, I was genuinely taken by her since 1970s. She enriched my deepest appreciation of voice and music. And the gifted opera singers that just poured out from Spain/Catalonia to all, throughout the world was one rich time of launching opera. Thank you in your history. Sincerely, from MO., USA

Great music. Just to clarify, Ramon Llull was a medieval Catalan philosopher. The songs on this album are medieval Catalan music. No actual relationship, it's more of an album concept, to put the two together.

Since Llull's first writings, there has been confusion in the church regarding whether he was a saint or a heretic. Llull has had a canonization process open in the Catholic Church since the times of Philip II (16th century). King Philip was one of the promoters of this process. The Spanish king was extremely fond of his work and used parts of it in the creation of the monasterio del Escorial. Prior to that, Llull was considered a heretic by most of the establishment, and the debate regarding both King Philip II and him continued in Rome long afterwards. Llull's works were prohibited by the Spanish Inquisition under the same king Philip, for he considered that "non-initiates could not understand them". Copies of the works were safely stored in the Library of El Escorial and were consulted by Spanish scholars, mostly sympathetic to Llull's views.
Within the Franciscan Order Llull is honoured as a martyr. He was beatified in 1847 by Pope Pius IX. His feast day was assigned to 30 June and is celebrated by the Third Order of St. Francis.
