There's actually a lot of debate amongst scholars on how Latin from the 8th or 9th century should sound. The choice in this recording is to ignore that debate and just go for established modern pronunciation. Marcel Peres and his ensemble use a more "French"-sounding Latin. (For the record, I don't mind either way, as long as it's musically well done.)
@@martijnspruit Well, it goes for *an* established modern pronunciation, namely the Polish one (edit: actually it doesn't), which is hardly avoiding making a choice. Weirdly, it has random classical dipthongal /ae/ thrown in, which in endings sometimes sounds like /ei/, but mostly like /e/, for good measure. Oh, and QV has a /w/, while Polish has /f/; Polish TIO is /tjo~tsjo/, but /tsio/ here; Polish OE /ø/, /e/ here. So it's one weird pronuncation all right, characteristic of absolutely no Latin church. It might have been plausible as an intended reconstructed Carolingian pronunciation, but this is made impossible by CE, GE sounding as /tse, ge/, which is basically Polish. Authentic options would be /ke, ge/ or /tse, dže/ or like they sound in modern Greek (Alcuin's Anglo-Saxon).

Carolingian art is wonderful; denotes great love for musical, pictorial and scientific research. Unfortunately, no one knows for sure how they sang in the ninth century and, although beautiful, we have to be content with these barbarous copies of the original...

This is a collection of poetic works from the IX and the X cent. and they recall events connected with the Carolingian Empire: the lamentation upon the death of the King, the battle of Fontenay-en-Puisaye, the ransacking of the abbey of Saint Florent and the Emperor's passion for the poets of Roman antiquity, Boetius, Horace, Virgil... There are precious few traces left on this repertoire which testifies to the taste of imperial courts for poetry and the arts. The pieces recorded in this anthology are among the very few that have kept their musical notation, a mere set of neumes written above the words.

9th century Utrecht Psalter: Please all note the 'roman-style' furniture and houses. Means: there still were loads of 500 year old buildings and even tables, chairs and lampstands around in monasteries abd churches. The religious drawer in the 9th century still lived in the perception to be a cultural roman.
Hello Musica Medievale, I'm just curious: Are these pieces from the time of the Carolingian Empire or later pieces about the time of the Carolingian Empire? Best wishes, Alex
They are approximate reconstructions. Staff notation had not yet been invented. These texts were accompanied only by pneumae, that is, mere indications about the relative pitch of some syllables. They were used as a reminder for the singers that already knew the melody.
Pst! Orff's Carmina Burana is based on the poems from the medieval manuscript Carmina Burana - if you enjoy this music, you may want to look up the medieval version of Carmina Burana as well. There are a few recordings, including one by the Clemencic Consort.
@@kashakroger1692 I’ve listen. I knew that, of the manuscript of course, but listening to the original gives a full understanding of the work of Orff, and the original is brut and much more simple. The Orff view is an illuminated perspective of Middle Ages, and of course, is briliant, much more dramatic.
I have never before heard this. I always thought music began with Gregorian chant. Then progressed to a ground with a limited vocal line, tonics and dominants. Nonetheless, i really like this very early music.

With the exquisite Church Latin pronunciation :)
🌷

Beautifully done... But those barbarian Franks wished they could have sung as beautifully as Musica Medievale does it today... Perhaps an expedition back in time is needed to teach them the finer points of singing and music-making! Well done with this project, Musica Medievale!
Carolingian art is wonderful; denotes great love for musical, pictorial and scientific research. Unfortunately, no one knows for sure how they sang in the ninth century and, although beautiful, we have to be content with these barbarous copies of the original...

Best channel ever!

00:00:00 01. Chant 1 : Versus De Bella Que Fuit Acta Fontaneto
Aurora cum primo mane tetram noctem dividit,
Sabbatum non illud fuit, sed Saturni dolium,
de fraterna rupta pace gaudet demon impius.
Bella clamat, hinc et inde pugna gravis oritur,
frater fratri mortem parat, nepoti avunculus;
filius nec patri suo exhibet quod meruit.
Caedes nulla peior fuit campo nec in Marcio;
fracta est lex christianorum sanguinis proluvio,
unde manus inferorum, gaudet gula Cerberi.
Dextera prepotens dei protexit Hlotharium,
victor ille manu sua pugnavitque fortiter:
ceteri si sic pugnassent, mox foret concordia.
Ecce olim velut Iudas salvatorem tradidit,
sic te, rex, tuique duces tradiderunt gladio;
esto cautus, ne frauderis agnus lupo previo.
Fontaneto fontem dicunt, villam quoque rustici,
ubi strages et ruina Francorum de sanguine;
orrent campi, orrent silvae, orrent ipse paludes.
in quo fortes ceciderunt, proelio doctissimi,
pater, mater, soror, frater, quos amici fleverant.
Hoc autem scelus peractum, quod descripsi ritmice,
Angilbertus, ego vidi pugnansque cum aliis,
solus de multis remansi prima frontis acie.
Ima vallis retrospexi, verticemque iugeri
ubi suos inimicos rex fortis Hlotharius
expugnabat fugientes usque forum rivuli.
Karoli de parte vero, Hludovici pariter
albent campi vestimentis mortuorum lineis,
velut solent in autumno albescere avibus.
iubar solis illi desit, aurora crepusculo.
Noxque illa, nox amara, noxque dura nimium,
in qua fortes ceciderunt, proelio doctissimi,
pater, mater, soror, frater, quos amici fleverant.
O luctum atque lamentum! Nudati sunt mortui.
Horum carnes vultur, corvus, lupus vorant acriter;
orrent, carent sepulturis, vanum jacet cadaver.
Ploratum et ululatum nec describo amplius:
unusquisque quantum potest restringatque lacrimae:
pro illorum animabus deprecemur dominum.

Hello Musica Medievale, I'm just curious: Are these pieces from the time of the Carolingian Empire or later pieces about the time of the Carolingian Empire? Best wishes, Alex
I think they are indeed from the time of the Carolingian empire
They are approximate reconstructions. Staff notation had not yet been invented. These texts were accompanied only by pneumae, that is, mere indications about the relative pitch of some syllables. They were used as a reminder for the singers that already knew the melody.
Hello, check the info of the video, everything about this record is there!
And the bells`s sounds were falling terror then on the pagans.
To me, it seams likely the inspiration / base for Carl Orff’ Carmina Burana. Pleasant music!
🌹
Pst! Orff's Carmina Burana is based on the poems from the medieval manuscript Carmina Burana - if you enjoy this music, you may want to look up the medieval version of Carmina Burana as well. There are a few recordings, including one by the Clemencic Consort.
@@kashakroger1692 thank you Kasha!
@@pedrokarstguimaraes2817 CODEX BURANUS: ruclips.net/video/QWW_I0RawEg/видео.html
