ABOUT BEWITCHED: United by love, Darrin and Samantha Stephens (Dick York / Dick Sargent and Elizabeth Montgomery) may look like a classic American couple, but they have a secret that distinguishes them from their suburban neighbors - ad executive Darrin (Dick York / Dick Sargent) is a mortal, but Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) is a beautiful witch.

The way Uncle Arthur pushes Tabitha around on the royal red carpet. A thing of beauty..
Dick York’s energy levels were off the charts!
Look how beautiful Endora is! That entire outfit could still be worn today. Love it!
I love the outfit, too. Agnes Moorhead had great taste in clothes.
Yes it's gorgeous!
Agnes Moorehead is truly awesome!
Endora was the show. Simply wonderful Agnes Moorhead.
@Johanna Elves { Endora really is awesomeness! }
Indeed Endorse, Uncle Arthur, and Gladys Kravitz are my favorite characters
Correction: Endora not Endorse

What a terrific scene from one of the greatest television shows ever especially from the magical 1960s!!!!!
Yes I agree 👍. It was a fantastic show
I like how Endora emphatically calls Darrin "DARWIN!!!". It's like she's letting him know she's doing it on purpose.
Darwin is in Australia.
@I've seen the Twinkie and the damage done Agnes Moorehead was a brilliant stage actress and has incredible articulation and stagecraft. There is no other actress I can think of, either past or present who could match Agnes Moorehead in these areas. Not even Streep. She was truly superb.
My Dad went to school with Erin Murphy who played Tabitha. They went to El Toro High. My Dad told me he thought she was pretty.
She was doing it on purpose and everyone knows that. It was her way of letting him know how displeased she was of him, and that marriage.
@@sk8ercaligirl Really!
The comedic acting in this show is priceless🤣
Only Uncle Arthur would push Tabitha's stroller under a red carpet - loved Mrs Kravitz freak-out when being greeted by Uncle Arthur then the rose popping in his hands. Classic.
Darrins Expressions are Priceless!!!! ❤️

Endora looks glorious in purple with her red hair.
She does. And at 63, I am giving it some thought. :)

Agnes Moorehead was referred to as "the lavender lady".

Even more - the Bellows House is modeled after the Bewitched house.

Dick and Agnes worked so well together. So sad that The back injuries forced Dick to drop out of the show he was better than Dick Sargent.
Agree 200% and sad that he died destitute..
Never liked Sargent as Darrin” Darwood”. He thoroughly changed his personality
Yeah, but Elisabeth Monygomery liked the 2nd Darrin better. Dick York used to creep her out.

@@richparsons4205 : Not sure about you but I didn't like Dick Sargent's Darrin at ALL. When Dick York's Darrin was mad he was still comedically animated (as he was here) but Sargent's character was a sour-faced kurmudgeon who completely rubbed me the wrong way. Dick York I just LOVED
Yes! I feel the exact same way. I love Dick York. It would have been so great if he were with Bewitched for all 9 seasons.I felt so bad for him once I learned of why he left the show. In life, he was a very good man. He spent his years after Bewitched helping the homeless.
I love Uncle Arthur! The way he and Endora don't get along is 😂😂😂
My favorite Bewitched episode.
I like Endora.....she will stand up for Tabitha!
In real life as well as the show. Erin Murphy, who played Tabatha remembered how, during filming of the show, that between takes Elizabeth Montgomery ignored her, but Dick York, and in particular, Agnes Morehead took the time to be with her and treated her like real family.
@@artistjoh Didn't know that!
@@mikejohnson515 Erin Murphy did an interview on Australian television in which she talked a lot about how she was treated as a young actress. Her fond memories were reserved for York and Morehead. She considered Morehead as her at-work grandmother and apparently adored her. She thought of Dick York as her second father. Dick Sargent, on the other hand, didn’t get a mention.
I've never heard where Erin has said that Liz ignored her. I'll tell everybody what Erin Murphy has said, she loved Elizabeth Montgomery and looked upon to her as a mother figure. If she did something on set that she wasn't supposed to do, she said Elizabeth would correct her by saying, Erin Margaret ... Erin said that is exactly how her own mom would do it. Oh, she called Elizabeth Mantha mommy. She couldn't say Samantha. 🙂 She called York and Sargent Darrin daddy. 🙂
Liz didn't ignore her. In fact, Erin grew up with Elizabeth's own children, visiting her home to play with her kids and as an adult. If Liz had ignored her, I sincerely doubt that she would've been involved in the 1998 auction of Lizzie's clothes and other possessions and be present at the unveiling of the statue in Salem and Liz's star on Hollywood Blvd. I've also read that she would go Trick Or Treating with Elizabeth and her kids, which was one of Lizzie's favorite time of the year.
No, Erin loved Liz and is still close with Elizabeth's three adult children. Watch the chemistry between the two. Some of it was acting but, most was real. Watch the endings to SAMANTHA AND THE BEANSTALK and TABITHA'S VERY OWN SAMANTHA. In both, one can see the love between the two, especially the latter episode where Tabitha (Erin) throws her arms around her mom's (Elizabeth) neck. That was real.
Finally, Erin Murphy was asked once what Elizabeth Montgomery was like. She said that Elizabeth was "on" on and off set, meaning she was fun. This confirms what Herbie Pilato, Elizabeth's biographer, said in a 48 minute interview on Elizabeth last year. No matter what set she was working on, he said that she was always charming and she iust wanted to be like regula folks.
I think that's why people still love her. Oh, Sony is in the process of bringing a BEWITCHED movie to the screen. Unlike the 2005 movie, this one will follow on where the series left off. Let's hope.
@@kerrykeene6471 Erin did say that on set Elizabeth Montgomery would disappear inside her dressing room between takes and it was primarily Agnes Morehead who would take care of her at these times, and to a lesser extent, Dick York. This statement said nothing about interactions outside of the shooting schedule. In that particular interview Erin was only discussing what happened during shooting and never mentioned private interaction after hours. Just private interactions between takes.
It does appear that Elizabeth was the consummate professional while working and that she was good at defining boundaries between her private and working life. A substantial part of her rift with Dick York (who she also had an off-set personal friendship with during the first year or so of the show’s production that ended as his disability and addictions got worse) was due to her views on professionalism on set, and her love of adhering to fixed tight filming schedules. It is this reason why she was close to Dick Sargent both on and off the set even though fans largely rejected him in the role of Darrin, because Sargent was like her in being highly professional on set. In that interview Erin never mentioned Sargent, but did refer to York as her second daddy and emphasized that she saw Morehead as a grandma. This is very striking because, since Morehead died only a few years after the show ended, there is much less known about her attitudes at the time outside of stories that she could be a diva on set. Erin’s account shows that Morehead was a very likable person.
Uncle Arthur is a comedic genius!!!! He is hilarious!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️!! Endora is the best Mother, ever, and the prettiest!!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹....
I like Samantha's dress!!
Darrin should have considered the upside - Gladys Kravitz would have soon been distracted by Endora zapping things around in her own house and probably concluded that she, not Samantha, was the one behind the strangeness.
Love uncle arthur. Best cast. Nobody else can hold a candle to Aunt Clara❤️

The writers of this were geniuses on how to think of what the episodes would be about. So clever and the actors are so funny. 😀
Endora didn’t need to whip up such a big house for just herself.
No one really knew where Samantha's family lived. Oh they showed them in the c lours sometimes but not a home. I loved the show..huge fan... but got rediculous when it came out that these witches were hundreds if not thousands of years old. Did Samantha ever have other husbands? And how was she able to bear children. Also they weren't mortal human beings but real witches are mortal. And h ow did Samntha adapt so easily into a housewife when she had lived as a witch for hundreds of years. Doesn't make sense but I guess it's not about that just very good entertainment.
@The Green One I like to dig..It's food for thougjt.. Good to go beyond..it's a comedy show ..I get it.
When Darren found out that he'd married a witch, he should have just dealt with it and not admonish her.
But if Darrin had just accepted her witchcraft, there would have been no TV series.
It's funny how fans conflate reality and the storyline! Without Darrin admonishing Samantha, you would have no show to watch. Narratives are always built around conflict in order to teach a morality tale. Always been that way and always will be. Bewitched is a morality tale about bigotry and "otherness" as well as what happens when the sacred intersects with the profane. The show's premise is based around Ancient Greek storytelling ideas about the gods falling in love with mortals. It is actually the most ancient storyline in humanity, but it was modernised and situated into a comedic plotline. But at its core it elicits all our ancient human fears about our smallness in the universe, our desire to be unified with the gods and about our latent spiritual and supernatural powers which have been largely suppressed by capitalistic, western society. Bewitched is a timeless show and loved because audiences could discern within its narrative arc those ancient themes and myths that have always been with us.
@@stmichl9433 It is in it's Simplistic Form a Story about a Mixed Marriage and how the Is Struggle between Cultural Values and Traditions from the Families on both Sides it was also about Women's Empowerment in the World Even Endora as Powerful as she was as a Witch she was No Match for Husband Maurice Power Wise but she had the Power of her Femininity to over Power Him at Will and He was powerless against it and she Knew it.
@@gwb7875 those are not the meta narratives of the show. What you describe are some of the sub themes. The gods marrying mortals and what happens when that occurs is the main arc. Feminism and all those things are modern ideas which are not archetypal. They help sell the idea to modern audiences but at core are not what the show was about.
@@stmichl9433 Well that is what the Creator's of the Series said and if you did not live in or come through that Era you would not Understand it was not a Ancient Greek Mythology Tale you are over Thinking it Completely.

Even though Uncle Arthur was such a big part of the show he was actually only in a handful of episodes... always wondered what his characters relationship was with Endora was he her brother for example
Yes...younger brother
@@DutchVai Did they ever actually say that? I do think that he was supposed to be her brother. But I don't remember ever saying that explicitly.
For that matter, how was Aunt Clara Samantha's aunt? I had the impression she was Maurice's older sister. But again never said explicitly.
@@boredlawyer3382 Endora says in this episode that up until Arthur was born she was an only child. Arthur also jokes in "Samantha's Power Failure" that " Endora, when I think of you as a blood relative I long for a transfusion" ! Great characters.

He was also the driving instructor in the episode where Samantha was learning to drive like a mortal.. He was so funny they created a role specifically for him.
Darrin should’ve messed up Endora’s name a few times to see how she reacted. lol
Endora had great taste. This is a beautiful outfit. God bless and rest in peace, Ms. Moorhead. You were one of THE best dressed ladies on TV. ❤❤
Elizabeth Montgomery is the only cast member to appear in every episode of the series.
"Endora Moves Next to the Stephenses." Fixed it for you.
Endora called Uncle Arthur an "orangutan" at 2:10.
This would have been a hilarious epithet for Samantha's father, as Maurice Evans actually played an orangutan around this time in the 1968 movie "Planet of the Apes".
I noticed most of the art on the walls (except for the piece over the fireplace) is different from what was used in other episodes around this time, I wonder why. I also noticed the Kravitz house is blue, I always remember it as being yellow.
The art in the house changed throughout the seasons
I remember Bewitched the episode called mother moves in and a house that was my favorite episode
For me, what makes BEWITCHED so good is, it had/has a story in each episode. Norman Lear changed the tenor of TV by introducing in your face topics of the day, but I found sitting on set arguing issues, ALL IN THE FAMILY, etc., got boring. I like the she and it was groundbreaking, but them sitting in Achie & Edith's home every week debating the issues of the day became claustrophobic. CHEERS is another example. Did they ever leave the bar?
Sam was always doing something in the neighborhood, saving the park, working for UNICEF, helping kids, in other words, doing things someone does in their neighborhood and city. Love it.
I love seeing Gladys Kravitz freak out!
I loved ALL the characters on this sitcom....what an awesome time for television.....nothing like this anymore. Its all complete stupidity today. All the greats are gone!
Yes the shows today is to dumb you down all the reality crap makes not watch me not watch television no more.
Not all shows are dumb nowadays but most are, I agree
Endora looks lovely. I love her hairstyle, and it's a nice auburn colour, not bright orange like in some episodes.
I think she looks amazing too! I think the episodes where her hair is bright orange are the black and white episodes that have been colourised, some of the actors look like they've been caked in foundation.
3:40 Suddenly the Sonic the Hedgehog Academy of greeting people.
There's something so endearing about Dick York (Darrin #1) that Dick Sargent (#2) never quite captured. Sigh...😔
Agnes was funny and fabulous
As both shows were filmed at the Warner Brothers Studios: "Endora's new house looks like the one used as The Baldwin Sisters' house, on The Waltons"

I'm surprised Darrin's mom didn't try to move nextdoor. Or move in.
Just saw uncle Arthur in I dream of Jeannie. 🤣 IRS worker and a mortal.
Darrin doesn't like a hot foot made with real lightning because it hurts like all get out, and it kill one. 😅
Cute ❣️😛🙏
Richard Crenna was also in the mix to play Darrin, but declined as he had just completed THE REAL MCVOYS. Sol Saks originally wanted Tammy Grimes to play Cassandra, that's right. But she was tied up and she wanted Cassandra to use her witchcraft to solve world problems. Would you believe that Grimes' character's name on her show was Tamantha? 😀
Then Elizabeth Montgomery was offered the role, she jumped on it, changed the name Cassandra to Samantha and she and her character made TV history by becoming TV's first stereotype breaking witch, beautiful, kind, loving, smart, a sense of humor, and independent.
BEWITCHED and Elizabeth/Ssamantha became beloved icons along with a great cast and production crew.
I'm just going to say a few thing about this debate on York/Sargent. Most people's views are already baked in. Considering Sargent was supposedly the first choice (some say Asher always wanted York, not sure), and considering he was a closeted gay man playing a straight married man and then leaving at the end of the day to a bigoted world, where he could've been arrested in some parts of this country or even assaulted. That's called fear. That had to be tough emotionally on him.
The cast knew it and respected who he was, as they did Maurice Evans and Paul Lynde. But neither of them received the negative feedback, some hateful, over a role on a TV series. Elizabeth not only became Sargent's friend, but his biggest supporter.
In my view, Sargent's Darrin was done as a more mature person, less likely to blow up, and when he did, his anger was generally directed at Sam's relatives. Too many times, York's Darrin directed his anger at Sam, which York didn't like.
Sargent tried to do the character similar to York in season six, but he toned it down. Oh, Dick York thought Sargent did a fine job.
Chemistry:
SAMANTHA AND THE BEANSTALK, particularly the ending.
... AND SOMETHING MAKES FOUR, where Darrin goes in and sees Sam in
her room. The loving kisses they shared
OKAY. WHO'S THE WISE WITCH? Throughout, Darrin is frustrated, but didn't.
freak. Lov bthe ending.
There are more examples.
Finally, when Sargent finally came out in 1991, a friend of his said it was like the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders. When Liz found out, she was so happy for him and said, "In or out of the closet, I love him." When he died, she said, "I am going to miss his sense of humor, his love, and his courage."
That's one of the highest honor a friend can bestow on another.
Bottom line, all of this doesn't matter, since it's been almost fifty years when the show ended and all but a few cast members are dead.
I never noticed before there's a painting of Thomas moore
I always wondered why they had a painting of Thomas Cromwell in the living room, does anyone know why.

I don’t get it. They look out to the left at Endora’s house across the street ( and “on the corner”) and then Uncle Arthur, standing outside Endora’s house (which is not on a corner) with Tabitha in the stroller, runs back to the Stephen’s house...LEFT, Instead of right. I guess those warlocks can do ANYTHING! Another thing....why does Endora’s need a house to look over Tabitha, when she can just pop in and out via magic?
So she can be there 24/7 in a way. She can monitor the house from a perch and be able to see Arthur pop in Everytime
That would correctly be titled "Endora moves ... Stephenses | Bewitched"
I know it was never publicly announced that Paul Lynne was gay, I grew up in the 6Os in blissful ignorance of poverty, prejudice and how close the world had come to extinction during the Cold War. I miss watching shows like this that didn’t deal with real issues but was pure escapism.
