      「You meet nicest people on a Honda」

The iconic bike next to Vespa of Italian Piaggio Group after the movie "Roman Holiday".
I still remember browsing my dad's Sears Roebuck Company's mail order catalogue in 1960 which was as thick as a telephone yellow page. The primitive Vaspas of early age with naked T-shape handle bar while having headlight on the front fender like the one in the movie was listed at US$499 on the catalogue, which was not very popular then because American people prefer motorcycles with big wheels to scooters of small wheels.

Japanese motorcycle makers was not strong enough to occupy a space in worldwide market, especially the north America. British bike brands like Triumph, BSA, Norton, Italian brands like Motor Guzzi were the major players in the bike market while Vespa, Lambretta of Italy were focusing on scooter segment. Fuji Heavy Industry was making "Rabbit" scooters with Lambretta as model.

Those "you meet the nicest people on a Honda" ads saved the entire motorcycle industry......motorcycles were getting a really bad reputation until then. It looks funny now to see all those people riding with no helmets, no protective clothing, etc........ I guess that wouldn't fly today. Simpler times....... mostly better times......I miss those days !!

1969 I was thirteen years old and got the mc bug. I grew up on a small alfalfa farm. Irrigated, chopped weeds and hauled the hay out of the field when it was in season. My Dad and my Mom appreciated my hard work and traded 40 bales of hay(80 lb) bales to a cousin of mine for a S-65 Honda for me. I've had the mc bug since then. Now I own a 1999 900cc Triumph Thunderbird, 2005 H-D, 1200cc Sportster Custom and a 2006 Triumph 2300 cc Rocket III. Yeah that song puts the mc bug in you. I've owned many more bikes just many to list.

There are 13 million scooters in Taiwan, most of them have walk-through floor space for practical usage. Local people are using the walk-through floor space for various errands, pick-up and delivery of school kids, carrying weekly groceries, pickup of laundry, delivery of butane cans, actually scooters in Taiwan have been fully utilized as a workhorse.

Excellent work on this putting up all the old Honda ads ... I have collected some of them myself from old magazines at Flea Market sales booths. I have a super fondness for those times ( born 1950 ) and those Honda bikes ( the Vespas were cool too ) ... I started with a Honda CB160 at 14 in 1964 ... but rode the Cub a lot and recall drooling over it when I was around 13 in the early 1960's. The thrill of the freedom of just twisting the throttle and going wherever you desired was simply the best feeling. The ads are wonderful too ... I see how they always brought in a cool life-style to the setting and often times a gal as well. I might find an old Cub / Honda Pass Thru some day and buy it just to experience that feeling again. Plus all those vintage Hondas were works of art. Honda design and execution was simply the best.

I've owned several Hondas both two and four wheel. None of them ever put me at the side of the road; but the two-wheels Hondas were a lot more fun especial my GL500!

Amazing song-crafting. I'm not generally much of a nostalgic, but listening to this song and watching these photos, it becomes painfully obvious that there were much better times just a few decades ago. We fucked it up, and it didn't need to happen.

*My first ride of any kind was a '68 Honda 90 'Super Cub' for my 14th. B-day*
( *You could get a license for a smal M/C in Nev. at 14 then* )
*I beat hell out of that machine for 3yrs and as long as it had fuel...it would run!*
*I sold it for $200...it was $300 'out-the-door' new w/tax & license from 'Scootersville Honda' in Las Vegas, so not much loss on it!*
    _____________
*I have an '08 Honda 'Metropolitan' I bought 6yrs. ago 'gently used' and it's the most dependable vehicle of any kind I've ever owned and it 'goes w/the house' when I'm gone because I'll never let it go...and right now I think that won;t be long in coming*
( *I'm in constant, unrelenting pain from a 'Deep Vein Thrombosis' since Sept. and despite successful surgery and 'stents' in the thigh & calf it's agony for me to walk any length of time and I need 'Kahlua & aspirin' just to try and sleep at night before the pain wakes me*
*I will NOT allow this to continue indefinitely, so there's a 'bullet w/my name on it' in the near future if it doesn't improve* )
    ____________
*It's odd but if the weather isn't too cold or wet I have no problems at all riding my little '50'
since the huge saddle and floor-boads don't hurt my foot or leg at all!*
In fact it would be harder to drive since my right-ft. can't be depended on*
( *I keep an adjustable cane over the handlebar and it never moves unless I move it* )
