  • YUME NO PAHU by Kenny Endo
This piece was inspired by pahu drum maker, Cioci. In l974 he had a dream that he was playing a pahu (Hawaiian drum) and chanting in a clearing in the forest. Not a typical pahu, this drum was shaped like a bowl and supported by four figures holding it by their legs and four holding it with their hands. After Cioci awoke he constructed a drum exactly like that in his dream. The first musical section is based on the Hawaiian mele, Ua Nani o Nu'uanu. The second section contains a 24-beat Tahitian rhythm ("titau") arranged to be played as solos by the musicians. Yume no Pahu is dedicated to the indigenous people of Hawai'i in support of their struggle to control their land, their culture, their destiny. Cioci's drum is housed in the Drum Museum in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, Japan.
This performance is from the 雨 - AME, Tears of the Earth concert broadcast from the historic Hawaii Theatre on May 22, 2021. It features: Kenny Endo, Todd Yukumoto, Abe Lagrimas Jr., Sun Hui Hung, Taiko Center of the Pacific, and dancer, Lani Villanueva.

I remain shocked that so many people fell for the belief that face rags would keep them free of catching a case of the sniffles.
