    Great video. It might be the first drawing related “How to...” video I’ve watched all the way through where I wanted to try what was said rather than turn it off half way through. Very insightful and encouraging. I recently started drawing again, unfortunately I live in Korea so all my art teachers know like one word of English (“good”). Which means trial-and-lots of error has been my constant companion.

You need to be an art teacher!! Value scales 😍😍!! Blending out graphite is sooo relaxing to me. The pear already looks 3-D 🤩! I don’t usually blend with a tissue- though seeing you use it- it works really well 🙌🏻!! Never thought about graphite as a powder 😯- good point! The crosshatching gave the stem a nice texture 💗!! AMAZING info art queen 👏🏻💖

      Kari Beth aw thank you!! You can’t see on camera but it’s actually a dress😱 I love tiny floral print lol. The shading is definitely a lot more fun to watch sped up😂 I don’t mention in this vid but a more eco friendly way to shade is a good paintbrush instead of a tissue, although the brush has to be the right shape haha I need a new one. I’m glad you like the pear and omg cross hatching is so fun! IMO it’s the most fun way to shade😂💙

    Great video! I always found the thicker, blunter tortillons hard to work with for both charcoal and pencil. The narrower ones that taper more are charmed (at least for me), because I can get more blending edge on the paper and they soften overtime acting a bit like the Q-tip but with a better grip in the hand. I guess there is a “breaking in” stage to these 😁

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  2 года назад +2

      Ahh yes the blunter ones I usually call "blending stumps" and they really are stumps! Tortillons definitely don't last forever, but longer than a q-tip and allow to get into finer details! thanks for watching

    if you wanna go dark I recommend Staedtler Mars Lumograph black 8b, which I believe is graphite-charcoal mixed.
    But for most of my drawings I only use 4B-4H. Another thing is that if you find out you can't go any darker with the current pencil, you just go for a harder grade and keep shading. That means, if you are shading with a 4b and the paper got too slippery, you go for a 2b and you can make it darker. That's how I found out some of the graphite drawings actually went as dark as a charcoal work

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад

      Thank you, I actually had that recommendation quite a lot and ended up trying out the staedtler pencils last month:) I got the graphite pencils(12b darkest) and the mars, and I really do like them! I’m a fan of incorporation charcoal and carbon into my graphite work as well. And thanks, I will remember that tip to use a harder grade pencil when that happens. I never thought of it before!💙

    • @aureliodecanton9970
      @aureliodecanton9970 3 года назад

      @@AlexisCassandraArt I know right? It sounds counterintuitive to keep darkening with a harder pencil, but it’s because when the paper got too slippery with graphite, a soft pencil would not leave a trace, but a harder one will.

  • @nanthilrodriguez

      Hey, thanks for dropping by my video! For sketching something out, I just use one of those cheap mechanical pencils because they don't need to be sharpened and you can lightly sketch all the details haha. Hi, Thanks for the awesome info can you please tell me what paper should I use for hyper realistic graphite pencil drawings

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад +1

      Hello, it is really up to personal preference but I have a video all about popular paper comparison thats up on my channel! :) I also recently tried strathmore 500 bristol vellum paper, in my latest video I used it to draw a crocodile with graphite and charcoal, and its my new favorite paper for graphite/charcoal. It has some tooth(not completely smooth) but the texture isnt too noticeable or annoying. Stay clear of sketch paper that is really thin because it won't take a lot of layers which makes it hard to create a realistic graphite drawing:)

      @@AlexisCassandraArt Thanks a lot for your time answering me, I am a construction Engineer and got in love with your realistic drawings, I can draw beautiful buildings lol, an I have recently used the Strathmore Bristol vellum series 300 for realist drawings and I didn't like it because of it's tooth as it gets very difficult to blend or may be I am not that professional to be able to blend, so I am going towards using the smooth surfaces.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад +2

      @@KINGMKFH that is really awesome :) it takes a lot of patience to draw architecture. In your case I definitely agree that smooth surface will be best to get even lines, and it works well with fine liner too if you plan on inking your lines at some point :)

    A good graphite black pencil would be Mars lumigraph black I keep a 2b and 8b to supplement my graphite set. I notice we both use the same erasure :) I love that little thing. However, I think one concept you missed would be paper quality which is probably the most important part of any graphite work.

    Which paper strength did you use? Thanks for the tips.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  7 месяцев назад +1

      for graphite, you actually dont need it to be as thick. This video is pretty old but now looking back, I think I would say at least around 120 gsm or over. While graphite works fine on thinner paper, I opt for paper to be a little thicker for the sake of preserving the artwork (thinner paper tends to rip, maybe crunch or fold over time)

    I have a question, how do you properly hold a pencil on it's side to shade? I'm holding it at a weird angle and not sure if I'm doing it right. Does practicing help me get a better understanding on how to use my graphite pencils?

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад +1

      However you like to hold it:) This method is basically just to eliminate streaky shading or pressing too hard with your pencil and therefore having to sharpen more often. You don't need to angle your pencil too much to the side, just as much as you need to get the result you desire:) Practice definitely will give you an understanding of how you like to use them and you will be more comfortable with them!

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад +1

      I would use a reference photo and then edit it so its grayscale and you can clearly see where the shadows are! They're usually at the bottom or mainly on one side where not much light is hitting, but it also depends on where the light source is coming from:)

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад

      With graphite, you want to leave your main highlights light on the paper to begin with. If you want to add bright highlights later, you can use a kneaded eraser to lift some graphite up! Or for small details the tombow mono zero eraser works great. A white pencil won’t do the trick with graphite though

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад

      That's great you are taking it up again! I think I've always enjoyed art, but it's been about nine years now of me taking it more seriously. So since my skill level has obviously improved a lot from so much practice its hard to tell! I will say I may have had an inclination though- my mom was also interested in art when she was younger and she was a great acrylic painter!

    I have a question. Is there a specific order of pencils that you sketch in? (B-h, h-b) I’m a beginner and struggling.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  3 года назад +1

      I actually don’t use them in a particular order, just that I build up shading mostly with B range pencils. HB is a good pencil for super light shading or sketching:) the H range is a little too hard for me so I don’t use as often. B and 2B are great to use to first mark in shadows. As you play around with them you’ll figure out which ones you like to use most often, but I end up using 8B a lot for the dark shadows:) hope this helps
