  • Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones is by far one of the worst villains, so lets take a crack at trying to fix him. Because he's one of the worst aspects of season 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones.

There's a lot of defense for the actor Pilou Asbaek and his ability to act, which to me was fine, the main issue was the direction he pushed the character. Another quote from Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon from Pilou Asbaek states: "So I had an idea for season seven. I said, "what if we made him a bit more like a rock star, where you don't know if he's going to kill you or fuck you?""
Another one: "I know exactly how to be this (character). He's gotta be charming, he's gotta be arrogant, he's gotta look Jaime right in the eye and say it with the biggest fucking smile because he's an idiot and a prick, and that's what I like about the character." David and Dan said, "Let's try it out." after the scene they said, "We're so fucking happy you insisted on that."
So from those quotes, it seems like Pilou Asbaek was pushing for the character to be more high-energy and over the top. So I don't feel like it was just the script that was bad.

I think Asbæk's idea for the rockstar swagger demeanor is actually a good one, if you use it as contrast. Make the swaggering side his "smiling eye", as the books called it, and then add a second side for his "blood eye", where he drops the swagger entirely and becomes deathly serious and frightening by contrast. Having a character put up a more silly front makes it far more effective when they drop the persona and show just how dangerous they really are

I am still mad about what they did to the Greyjoys. The Greyjoys, especially Balons brothers, are among my favorites in the books, not because they´re so likeable (they´re absolutely not), but because they make up such an interesting trio. Aeron, the slightly mad and devout priest, Victarion, the fierce warrior and stupid af, and Euron, who in my opinion is the fucking Antichrist. They left out the first two (yeah, there is a priest, but its not like he has a name or does anything) and completely fucked up Euron. I mean... they could at least have made him more "evil" by revealing that he raped his brothers or by including that monologue from the books where he explains how he is the godliest men of all, because wherever his ship appears, people start to pray. Then again... would have probably sounded like a joke from series Euron anyway.

One reason I think Euron Greyjoy works so well as a villain is the fact that he is the culmination and possessed traits of the other major antagonists of the series. Look at every villain we’ve encountered, and you can find at least one aspect of their character in Euron. For me, the most obvious similarities can be found in Littlefinger, Tywin, and Ramsay.
Like Littlefinger, Euron is an ambitious, conniving, and highly manipulative individual who is easily capable of giving off the impression of someone who is trustworthy, successfully hiding their true selves and their true motives. Almost everyone trusts Littlefinger. The ironborn love Euron. Euron’s act is so convincing that Victorian (whose wife was seduced/raped by Euron) has to remind himself that Euron’s gifts are poisoned. Only the other members of House Greyjoy seem aware of Euron’s true self.
Like Tywin, Euron is ruthless, shrewd, analytical, and very intelligent; a political and military genius. He makes enemies into allies by giving them seemingly important lands and titles. He even brings a rival at the Kingsmoot to his side by promising him a marriage to his own niece, Asha Greyjoy. Anyone he can’t bring over is dealt with. The only person Euron lost a battle to was Stannis the Mannis himself.
Ramsay’s and Euron’s similarities are probably the most obvious. Both are disgusting and despicable sadistic psychopaths who rape, murder, and torture people just for the fun of it. There is no empathy, remorse, shame, or a fraction of a conscience to be found in either of them. Euron’s torture of his brother Aeron is much like Ramsay’s torture of Theon. They both even have a favorite torture technique: Ramsay flaying, Euron cutting out tongues. Even taking all of this into account, Euron easily surpasses Ramsay in the sadism department, and the Mountain too for that matter. He has boasted of pillaging, burning, raping, and killing his way around the world as a pirate. He bragged about forcing a group of warlocks into cannibalism. When his brother Victarion discovers Euron got Victarion’s wife pregnant, possibly by raping her, Euron mocks him as a cuck. In TWoW, Euron reveals that he is a serial kinslayer and incestuous abuser, having raped two brothers as children and murdering another three.
Of course he has traits with other villains (Cersei’s narcissism, Joffrey’s delusions of grandeur, Vargo Hoat’s army of freaks, etc.) but Littlefinger, Tywin, and Ramsay are the most apparent.
Add in the fact that he is a dark sorcerer and a potential warg and greenseer like Bran, and you have the scariest villain in fantasy, if not one of the scariest villains period. I had nightmares about this man. Absolutely terrifying.

Most about him is shown through other characters' eyes, like his brother Victarion. The books do a great job explaining how Victarion is crazy as fuck, but even someone like him comes as level headed compared to Euron, and that is shown not with Euron scenes but instead stating how Victarion doesn't dare to defy him, at least face to face. If this character was a generic pirate and not Euron, he would have been fantastic, just not the true Euron: the populist occultic psychopath who wants everyone to think he's a god of death.

It feels like after S4, they began to realize they would actually have to continue certain story lines themselves and decided to gut them. I generally enjoyed S5 and 6, but you can tell they had no idea what to do with Dorne and basically cut it to shreds. Same with the Iron Islands and the Three Eyed Crow, even with a lot of the stuff in King's Landing was ended fairly abruptly by wiping out half the characters (although at least it was satisfying and enjoyable to watch). I understand that as the story progresses, it becomes more and more bloated and has a very wide scope with a lot of threads to keep track of which is much easier to do in a book and TV/film is exponentially more complicated to plot out and it all has to fit in a certain amount of time etc, but it feels like they didn't even try and just decided to flush half the plot out the air lock and do the most brain dead, dash-to-the-finish interpretation of the central plot which had the clearest end point and therefore, required the least effort writing wise. Sprinkle in a couple fan-service things that they probably didn't even put together from reading the books themselves and got off the internet like Clegane Bowl and remembering to bring back Gendry from his ocean voyage and bam fixed it, right?
I'm not even sure what my original point was, this just became a cathartic rant, I hope someone can make sense of this XD
EDIT - I forgot to mention how they tried to merge certain stories into others (eg Young Griff). This would be fine if done elegantly and seamlessly, but it was done with the grace and subtly of throwing a bowling ball through a stained glass window. This show needed 10 seasons minimum, but nah lets just cut the biggest cultural phenomenon on TV short because some how they thought they could do better.

So this would be a culture shock to Euron and unlock his memories of who he truly is. The Crow's Eye. This sends Euron on a crusade to bring about true apocalypse, causing Jon Snow to go on a journey as well to finally ascend to Azor Ahai while confronting his past trauma and demons like Daenerys, Ygritte, Eddard, Catelyn, Rhaegar, Mance, Lyanna, Robb, Rickon, and others that Jon has thought himself to have failed in some way.

Things that should have happened in Season 8 :
Go back to the 10 episode format to give the scenes time to breathe. Bran gets his personality back. He is no longer robotic after fully mastering his powers. Jaime goes to The Twins where he finds Edmure Tully laying low with his wife. He tells Jaime that Arya had freed him. Now lord of Riverrun & The Twins, he and Jamie gather the loyal, and head to Winterfell. The remaining children of the forest, Howland & Meera Reed show up with their people at Winterfell. There's no tension between Sansa & Daenerys because the Nightking is too big of a threat for politics. The NK is the big bad end boss, not Cersei or Darnerys. Tyrion goes back to being smart again, and suggests sending scouts (like he used in season 2 for Stanis) to King's Landing & Dragon Stone to see what Cercei is up too. After the wall came down, The Night King flew down the coast from Eastwatch while his generals proceed south with the dead. The NK burns Kings Landing & the Red Keep to the ground. After a demoralizing battle in Winterfell, the dead swarms, and overruns the castle. The unsullied, dothraki, Nymeria with her wolf pack, and the dragons keep the dead army at bay while the living flee south. In King's Landing, half a million dead (the other half were scorched) rise with the NK leading. Euron, his fleet, and the golden company are part of the dead now. Yara survives because she was tied up on Euron's ship, and was not in the city. Cersei, Qyburn, The Mountain, and a handful of Lannister soldiers had escaped, and headed north. The Night King's southern army decimates every kingdom while they head north. Cersei realizing the fallacy of power while having a miscarriage becomes a shell of herself after seeing what the Night King did with Viserion. Arya & the hound stay with the northern armies. The living from the north, Edmure, Jamie, and Cersei all cross paths at the God's Eye, and are cornered by the dead army on both sides. Arya successfully kills Viserion with a dragon glass arrow through the eye (since they kept showing her practicing her archery). The Night King now on foot creates a blizzard to blind the living. Melisandre, Kinvara and Quaithe arrive with hundreds of red priestesses, and shadowbinders to counter it. They also create a giant ring of fire around the living with only a small pathway to the Vale. The Night King & Craster's sons are the only dead that can walk through the fire. Daenerys proceeds to keep burning the dead outside of the fire circle. The night king kills Rhaegal with an ice javelin. This prompts Jon, and all the fighters with Valyrian or dragon glass weapons to attack him & his generals. The Mountain tries to kill the Night King but is cut in half. His torso crawls away. Jon, Jorah, Grey Worm, Theon, and Brienne, all charge the generals. Theon gets mortally wounded killing the last white walker general. The night king takes on all of the best fighters in Westeros with ease. Sandor follows & gives his brother a mercy killing by decapitating him. Jamie then hands Sandor Widow's wail. Bran worgs into the night king's mind to see who he was. This is the great war. It doesn't just last one day. End Of Season 8

The crazy thing about Euron too which many book readers knows is just crazy and characters around him too react the same way. The black scale armor Euron has is not just any armor.
It is fully scaled and plated armor of Valyrian Steel. We know how rare and great valyrian steel is, as there is barely few swords of it, but a whole set armor, That is something you can only find in old valyria which many in the books say to stay out of as you will just find danger and die as no known man has ever survived.
But Euron was there and survived It's like what Euron's brother Aeron damphair said(the high priest of the drowned god)
"In all the seven kingdoms and beyond, no man has ever worn a full suit of valyrian steel!. Such things was only known 400 years ago, in the days before the doom of Valyria. Euron did not lie, he has been to Valyria... no wonder he turned mad"
Then Euron does something many others don't, he spits in eyes of gods and men, having no rules or no limits. Someone as cruel as Tywin, Bolton or Ramsay still was honour bound by laws, reputation and tradition. As for example killing your own was big taboo with being called kinslayer. Which is why Tywin and bolton never did it even though they wanted to.
Euron on the other hand has a crew on his ship the silince of his bastard sons with cut off tongues and also kills his own brothers like nothing with having killed already 3 in the books, even cuting out his own spouse tongue who is pregnant with his own child to hang infront the ship like among others like he did on his other ships in his huge fleet to perform some kind of a massive dark blood ritual at Old Town.
Also in the books it was a faceless man who was sent to kill Balon Greyjoy by Euron. So even that means he has connection with them and must have good stake or big price to trade as hiring a faceless man is not cheap but to buy to kill a king, that is even more expensive.
He has enslaved warlocks, a fire priest at his side. Seemed to have been to Valyria and even to Asshai in the shadow lands and survived both. A horn from valyria which magical user in valyria imbued to supposedly command dragons under owner's control. Found a dragon egg(but has not succeded in hatching it).
He was visited byt three eyed raven like bran was, with also having same dream as Bran. Meaning is a magical person like bran and supposedly can control animals/humans too. Also why his the red eye as symbol to his flag and other stuff. As the three eyed raven has a red eye.
Then it comes to big theory territory with him being the big and wanting bring about the long night and allow the white walkers(in books the others) to go over the wall. As Sam is in old town who supposedly has the horn of winter, which is said to be able to bring down the great wall itself.
The big theory is that there was an emperor called the bloodstone emperor who I quote "He was envious of his sister who he cast down and slew her... He practiced dark arts, dark forms of torture, and necromancy, enslaved his people, took a tiger-woman for a bride, feasted on human flesh, and casted down the "true" gods to workship a black stone instead"
It is stated the bloodstone emperor's cruelty, all dark art of magic and evil he did caused the first long night 8000 years before aegon targaryen.
Now Euron does the same as this is what he has done.
Kills brother for the throne, like bloodstone emperor with sister.
practice and use the dark arts, like the bloostone emperor.
tortures his borther Aeron and others in cruel dark ways.
    enslaved the shield islanders.
Makes his warlocks eat eachother. Like bloodstone emperor who practice and did cannibalism
Spits in the eyes of gods
The emperor married a tiger woman. This can be like what Euron wants as he says he will marry what he calls the dragon woman, Daenarys.
Then much other stuff which is just crazy, with supposedly summong under sea creatures or a dark sea god, like lovecraft stuff as Cthulu.
So yeah Euron is like one of my favorite character in the games of thrones as he is one of the most terrifying and intresting characters. Which is why I think the what the show runners did to Euron is ONE of the biggest butchering of characters in television history.
    Reccomend watching
Euron Greyjoy's apocalypse in the Game of Thrones books by Alt Shift X. As he goes deep into all details of what is going with Euron and some of the theories of what he wants to do or what will happen in next book from all hints that exist, remember people have had like 7 years now with no book to figure or not figure all this shit out with theories.

Really sucks how bad Euron Greyjoy was, cause the actor Pilou Asbæk is soooo good. I think part of the reason is that Pilou isn't very fluid in english and you can clearly hear his speaking i very danish inflected. This probably makes acting a bit harder. His danish acting is amazing.

I genuinely think that when they wrote Euron’s first scene, they actually intended to adapt his book counterpart. The scene on the bridge with Balon was actually well-done and I liked the eerie atmosphere of the storm.
Then when the Kingsmoot happened, I felt like they changed their minds while writing it, so Euron is now a clown. When I first saw that scene, a part of me still thought that maybe that was an act for the Ironborn. But Season 7 confirmed that he really was just a buffoon.

The biggest problem in the show was keeping Cersei around and not killing her off to be replaced by Young Griff. In the books if Cersei tried to proclaim herself queen like she did in the TV show then her reign would be measured in minutes. Young Griff is also absolutely essential for Daenery's plot to work correctly too since then to the wider Kingdom she appears as a genuine usurper who brought over an army of slaves slavers a foreign religion and likely Dothraki.

A really good example of someone who is sociopathically intimidating, yet still charismatic and funny is Lalo Salamanca for the Mike-storyline in Better Call Saul. He does a really good job of hiding his intention behind the lines of his sentences, yet still comes off as scary to the protagonists because he has an agenda that is clear to the audience, and a purpose that is clear to the other characters. Yet, they all have to play the game of smiling faces and shaking hands. Not that all of that would work perfectly for Euron in the setting of Game of Thrones, but is an example of how to make your villain Charming and able to have humor, without completely breaking their design.

I can understand why they didn't go with book Euron in the show. They obviously didn't have enough seasons or episodes left to go down that route, and wanted Cersei, Dany and the Night King to be the main villains in the final season. However I still think they could've made him a relevant and threatening secondary villain in other ways. They could have given him more of a conniving and clever side to his personality, as well as an extremely ruthless side. I would have liked to see him win Cersei over, then plot to murder her and take the throne, when he found out her child wasn't his. In theory, this was do-able, as she had no close other allies to protect her by the time of the final season. Theon could then have swooped in and unwittingly saved cersei's day, by killing Euron in his battle to get Yara back.

Once again, a significant part of the problem is that they wanted to exclude Aegon from the books as Daenerys's primary rival, and keep Cersei in that role instead. It must have seemed logical to them, in the same way that they wanted to keep a familiar character around in a new character's role like they did with Sansa and Jeyne Poole, but it breaks the narrative. There are just too many reasons why Aegon would be a credible threat to Daenerys where Cersei absolutely can't (absolutely no one other than Qyburn and Gregor should be following her after S6).
So, they wanted to give Cersei the Ironborn to provide her with more allies, even though the Ironborn really aren't a great set of allies to have unless you're talking about transporting troops across the sea. It might have been interesting had they decided to keep Euron's fascination with magic and his apocalyptic ambitions and make that work with Cersei somehow.
