I have had good results using sprays to apply a zenithal highlight. I then touch up with brush to peak the white on top. The key to getting a smooth result with sprays for this is thorough shaking and proper temperature.
Great tip!
Spraycans are way to messy ,I bought an airbrush and its sooo much better ,then before when I used spraycans.
Thanks for the review.
well a look in to looks good got see how mutch is may be get some fore the futcher
I originally thought when i saw these, with the labels, that you could just pick the color tone you wanted,
Like it it would start off as 1 solid bright color, or dark, and you could just choose to ajust it- either lighten it up or darken it, or change it to another tone, ..i feel like that would have been really cool,
I almost feel like that would have been better, .
Or maybe you could either have 1 solid color, like normal paints, and then add a medium to make them like contrast,
That could have been cool as well, because as is, i feel like they just can't reach the same level of greatness that normal paint can, but they could if they had just formulated them differently.
Would love to see a future video of you going through the steps again but using the 2.0 speed paints. Really like that under coating technique
Sorry for the confusion, this video is all 2.0 speedpaints.
Hi Rob, really great video! I was wondering which shade of blue you used for those space marines?
Thanks for the review. Really enjoy the in depth look. I've got a ton of regular AP acrylics to go through and by that time 3,0 should release.
Glad it was helpful!
Lol I understand. Since getting about 8 GW contrast and the entire set of AP 1.0 Speed paints I havent touched my other 120 acrylic paints once ( except some mettalics and chesp craft paints for terrain )
In serioulsly thinking to Ebaying my entire acrylic ranges and preety much speed paint only.
@19:40
I'm assuming if you used more white primer to highlight the black brushed on primer, you could get a brighter blue like in the airbrushed model?
You could for sure!
I actually like the brighter one it's different and stands out
Hey Rob! Great video on the paints. So when you talked about zenithal highlighting, would it be better to just do a Grey undercoat then white and forget about black altogether? Thanks again for doing the work!
Thanks, Jason, and yeah, that would also work!
Hello, new to contrast paints.
What do you think are the differences between these and vallejo xpress? Both seems cheaper than citadel
Thx
We haven't used Vallejo, but they seem pretty good, problem is, they're often hard to get in the US, or really anywhere outside of Europe.
@@spikeybitstv they are widely available in Asia too
Very good review thank you 👍
Thank you!
5:34 AB really should have done more to distinguish ver. 1.0. from ver. 2.0 on the bottles. Vallejo just came out with a 2.0 version of their Game Color range and the bottles are clearly different: black cap vs. silver cap, added red band, clear bottles vs. semi transparent.
The reason they didn't change it is this is more of a rolling update, its the same product, just new and improved!
Depends how good they go on. I had difficulty trying to use them in with traditional non airbrush painting. I might try some of that stuff using these like Dana Howl does. The metallics sound interesting. I tried using inks with metallics a while back but my experiments didn't yield very good results. Cheers Rob.
I noticed the metal paint is very thin but doesn't run so much like a thinned metalic so you can do very thin trim or tight detail without spillover
just recently got a resin printer, wish i could afford these paints now so i can start printing/painting minis and models
How can I tell if a speedpaint is v1 or v2 when I am purchasing? Same for megastar. Does it have a big 2.0 on it?
The box sets have 2.0 on them, the individual pots don't unfortunately
I'm surprised there's no white in the megaset?
not to take shots at xenethal priming, but transparent colors like the speed paints don't show up over black. I prefer a two or three tone color coat color coat and using the speed paint almost like a wash. try doing a space marine in medium blue primer, with a light blue dry brush and then the magic blue speed paint.
Thats the whole point, its to add a fourth tone under your highlight, midtone and recess tone from the speedpaints
So all the 1.0 colors are in the complete set, but do they have the new formula or are they just added into the new box?
They'll all have the new formula. This is a running update of the line, new formula and increasing the colors available to 90 total!
And I was hoping to save some money since I still have the 1.0 mega set. I’ll probably run those out then look into it. I honestly never really had reactivation issues anyway.
So is the original set going to stay in production with the old formula?
To my understanding no. The new formula is an improvement to the existing line along with all the new paint colors .
thanks for making this video !
mahalo
You bet!
is it true the first batch of speed paint reactivates? I have a lot of friends who say its a myth drummed up by competitor paints
As long as you use them as directed, they don't reactivate.
The only time I saw "reactivation" from the 1.0 Speed Paints, was when I would overlap them with regular acrylic paints.
Interesting. I had reactivations with basically every additional layer, from washes to glazes to metallics. 1.0 was not useful.
Hmm how can we identify 2.0 vs 1.0 in stores then?
On a bottle, it’ll be tough on the box that will be noticeable because they are different content wise. But keep in mind this isn’t a new product. This is them improving the current product and adding new colors to it.
@@spikeybitstv I've had issues with my Dark Wood reactivating, and i usually buy individual bottles as needed, so thats why i was wondering. A bit unfortunate they haven't marked a different SKU at least
I just got the mega set, and every bottle has a "2.0" in the upper right corner of the label. Preview versions seem to have used old bottles, so it's possible the SKUs may have changed too.
@@unspeakableoaf dope good to know, thank you.
I still like the reactivation, it's a nice feature if you need it.
I brought Speedpaint for that feature, I have been using oils for years and I use spirits to reactivate the oil paint and add additional highlights with a q tip, I found speedpaint worked in the same way, you have do much more control over the finished effect than with contrast, I did find if you don't want it to reactivate you just leave it to fully cure or slap a quick varnish over it all.
Exactly, but some have whined about the extra steps to stop reactivation.
@calvanoni5443 yep, it was easy to get the paint to do what you wanted, everyone just seemed to want a cheap copy of citadel contrast, I don't like that paint anywhere near as much, Vallejo have just made a cheaper contrast copy paint so people could have just brought that and Army Painter could have left their paint as it was for people that wanted something more versatile.
It's a great feature for a different product line. But the point of speed paint is that it is a fast easy way to paint. Adding a long wait and extra steps before I can continue painting defeats the whole purpose.
@Christopher_Gibbons yep, I think it was badly marketed. They should have just shown someone using the reactivation to remove some paint and add highlights and someone just using varnish to seal in the paints and saved the whole fiasco, tbh I have always sprayed a varnish over my basecoats, even when I was using citadel contrast as I found that rubbed off, so it really didn't make any difference to me. . I'm just annoyed that the original speedpaint is perfect for how I paint and now I won't be able to get any, the 2.0 is apparently identical to contrast paint so will just have all the flaws of that 🙄
I personally would never paint my space marines as ultra marines but I totally agree with you that the speedpaint you did from last year was so much better than the one you did for this video, its just looks so much better its not even in the same realm. This video is what made me decide to take the leap and i preordered a set so thank you it was a great help.
Unironiocally mentioning an iPod in 2020s. 😂
This is an outstanding video, but speedpaints are a pain in the ass. The idea is to expedite the painting process. Way too much screwing around with prep work to try and make them presentable. I've been experimenting with contrast paints using various base coats, and Zenithal methods for over a year now and it all looks like crap. You can get a far better result with traditional acrylics using drybrush techniques, washes, and inks.
Not a fan.
it sucks that a couple of the paints still reactivate pretty badly because i would of loved to of got my hands on these but the inconstancy buts me off big time 😕
I dont understand your statement, the new paints do not reactivate at all.
@@spikeybitstv I've seen a few other reviewers testing the reaction and a couple of the colours including 2 of the metallics reactivate pretty badly but I will say the paint range has improved but imo still not enough to be worth buying
Rubbing medium into just about any paint can make it reactivate. Same reviewer did it with Vallejo Xpress and it did the same thing. The metallics moved a bit but none of the colours did. Don’t get the AP hate? Looks like a solid product to me, I liked the first Speedpaint and I think it’s cool they actually listened to our feedback with these new colors.
In fairness, many paints when scrubbed with medium will do the same. That’s because most mediums have a retarder element to them. We’ve seen this happen with ours and our competitors paints in our testing and don’t think it’s a realistic portrayal of how paint behaves.
That’s wild man. I’m not sure what they’re doing that I’m not. I literally showed you that it does not reactivate even just 20 minutes later. if somebody’s rubbing some other substance onto them to get them to reactivate then that’s quite frankly pretty idiotic.
Lot of cash for 90 paints.
What price would you rather pay for the paint? For the complete set, it comes out to $4 each a bottle here.
Buy 35 Citadel paints for the same price, ha.
A request, please hold the miniatures still. You wiggled them around a lot. Move them slower please.
Pause and/or slow down the video.
