This looks amazing, and yeah their new paints are amazing. Just a hint, if you want to get an amazing 'glow' effect, basecoat something with a good white, then mix some pastel seafoam with speedpaint medium 1-1, and lightly wash it. It's INSANE
I’ve used the 10 2.0 in the small starter set, they work well. The Metallics 2.0 are great pre thinned metallics, though I don’t see the “contrast” folks keep talking about. Enjoying where Army Painter is headed. Thanks for the video.
The contrasting effect is indeed not very strong on the metallics, it seems. But I do think they have some that normal acrylics wouldn't give you. Have you tried thinning them with speedpaint medium? It may do something to push the highlights a bit up. Or maybe experiment with using a gloss undercoat to affect the flow?
I just bought this set and am getting ready to try them out. I was looking for videos\tutorials about how to use them properly and yours are the best ones. Thanks!
I was always a citadel contrast fan boy and turned off by speed paint 2.0 by some bad reviews activation issues and cracking ect but I took the dive and brought one of the big box sets and so glad I did. I've had no problems with them at all and prefer them to contrast, you get more play time with them and less staining with a smoother finish and prefer them so much more to contrast now
Same. I find them quite a bit better than Contrast in pretty much every way. To the point I sold off all my Contrast paints (except for 2 I still need to offload).
Must say. Would love a series on these paints in this style. Longer showing the paints. Few paints at a time like we got here. It’s good to see them at work, and examples of how some of the paints Come out on an actual model instead of bases, or paint pot tops, and so on..
While I prefer contrast paints it's mainly because that's what I started with. I respect Army Painter for hearing the complaints people had and said "we'll fix that" and then they did. This was such a cool model to show them off on Great video as always Andy
I won't lie, this video has given me the absolute perfect idea for the bases on my Lumineth Realm-Lords. The base you did is fantastic, and the green is absolutely perfect. Thanks for uploading this!!
Another great video. Your Nuclear Sunrise has split matey. Mine arrived like that and I got a fresh replacement from AP which is bright orange and not that washy orange colour.
I like AP Forest Sprite a lot. I use it on my Necrons for the glow effect. Start with bold titanium white for tubes and coils and whatnot, or wet blend the white with black to get gradients on a blade, and then slop Forest Sprite over it. For the plasma coils, I then follow up with a white pin wash so that the coils on the gauss flayers or whatever get darker as you get further away from them, fading from white to light green.
I think, playing with the base color might be an interesting thing to see. Making some light brownish spots here and there and blueish. I think the combination of light colored basecoat parts and the speedpaint as finish will give the model more interesting colors
I use both the 1.0 and 2.0 sets and I think they are great. 2.0 has improved the paints in a few ways and I use them a lot. Got the big set of the 2.0 set and I cannot say that I need many other paints for minis.
I agree. To bring up more shades from the SP in the type of characters like heroes versus orcs or spiders I do different zenithal prime coats to bring out different properties from the speed paints.
Worth mentioning there are a lot more colors than just what you have. The complete range (or set) includes 90 colors. I've been enjoying working my way through them. I think the single best element to the AP Speedpaints is the consistency of behavior across the range.
@@MediocreHobbies For example you said there was only one Orange in your set, but the one you used is the pale orange. Fire Giant orange is about twice as vibrant and is more like an orange version of Forest Sprite.
Im an army painter fan. Yet to try the 2.0 speedpaints still using my first gen starter set. Just added the air range of army painter so will get the 2.0 mega set at some point soon then ive got moet bases covered. That green is fantastic thou.
I often get paint where I don't want it, so have to fix my boo-boo's. The original speedpaint re-activation made it nearly impossible to do that. The 2.0 version works well with me, so well, I got the complete set and ma quite happy with them. I also like contrast paints, but hate their prices.
What a cool figure. I started checking out these kinds of videos because I wanted to paint my hero quest minis.... Now I'm gonna end up with a 3d printer lol
The new SP v2.0 paints are really good. Crusader Skin and Holy White are AMAZING. Yep SP does dry quickly which is a shame considering how casually the v1 paints dried. The Metallics are exceptional aren't they. The first true metallic washes???? Yeah I think so 😜
Updated Speed Paint seems to behave very nicely. It really shines over organic surfaces and thing like fur, where the shade-like properties of these type of paints get to really shine. Personally I'm curious to test out their metallic speed paints. Nobody else makes something like that. So I'm looking forward to your video on those. I also wonder how speed paints and other paints like them behave when applied on top of the metallic speed paints as applying a turquoise Contrast or something like them over silver is a really nice way to get Alpha Legion done quick while looking good.
Speedpaint has become my go to for painting. Even after buying all the contrast paints, I just like speedpaint 2.0 much more, and for half the price. I had the exact same reaction as you the first time I tried the green sprite color. There are a few more with the same reaction. I think the other Orange in the line is much better imo, unfortunately it's not in the box you got.
This has definitely changed my opinion on the AP Speed Paints 2.0. I was not impressed with the 1.0 iteration but that Forest Sprite has made a convincing argument. I've picked up the Speed Metallics and cannot wait for your review. Cheers, Andy!
I use army speeds 1.0 and 2.0 and they are different and i still like my 1.0s for alot of effects that i like. 2.0 has also allowed me to get some new effects that i like as well. So...having both versions is awesome. I feel i need both. Hope 1.0s will still be available
Picked up the 2.0 most wanted set and used them on some minis for Cyberpunk Red Combat Zone. I think they did a fantastic job. Now i wish that green had been part of the set because wow. I'm going to have to get it

Painting up some Chaos Space Marines this weekend I've decided that for me their metallic Speed Paints are probably the best way to paint the trim on their armor, especially if you mix in a drop or so of opaque metallic paint to really heighten the opacity.
I feel like Shamrock Green is an even more impressively vibrant green than Forest Sprite. Also love all the blues they've got, they're all beautifully deep and easy to work with. Some of the lighter colours like the pastels are tougher to use for me.
I gotta get my hands on more, keep hearing more paints that I want to try out! And yes pastels-I don’t know how to work with them either! Need more practice but very of my projects use them!

Love the vid! I'm just getting into painting so doing the obvious overthinking. I've a question about priming: you listed chaos black and leadbelcher; did you mix those both together or was it one first and then the second? Were they sprayed on with a can or airbrush? I REALLY like how it turned out, I've seen vids about slapchop and zenithal, but they look too dark; but this is just the perfect colour level I'm aiming for
Great question! Here's how and why I prime the way I do! Two different rattle/spray cans are used-one full solid coat of Chaos Black, and a lighter coat of Grey Seer sprayed from above to add light/dark areas. The lighter coating of grey seer adds a small amount of grit(too small for the eye to see) from above to give the contrast paint a better surface to cling too. Try redgrassgames brushes. Honestly, they’re incredibly good brushes they only make three! A 2, 2/0, a dry brush. And they pretty much do everything. They’re dry brushing brush is incredible for tons of things than just dry brushing.
I really like the AP colours and first tried 2.0 in the last few days and I’m a bit disappointed. I had some poorly base coated pox walkers so they had been sprayed chaos black then based with citadel. I dry brushed a white over this and applied some speed paint. I used purple swarm and it cracked terribly! I also found the drying time to be the fastest conpared to citadel or Vallejo. I need more experience but so far I’m not liking 2.0 if cracking continues to be an issue I won’t buy any more
I don't know, I think the criticisms I heard of Speed Paint 1.0 were fair, AND, probably there were fan base people who made it overblown. And that's fans, you know? If you say, 'Ice Yellow is a really good color' on a stream or RUclips as an influencer, suddenly I can't buy the paint in any local game store because it's been sold out...due to the recommendation (and probably the perception of it somehow saving a painter from terrible, terrible things...like coming up with another color). Extrapolations are harmful. 1.0 was good or not depending on how one painted, and that is the greater point missed. It was quite fine for one coat and done, not so good for layering. The generalizations about it were far worse than helpful.
Couple of questions. First, would you layer up the green like you usually do over contrast or just leave it as is? Is there any situation where you wouldnt layer up after basecoating? Second would you start to replace any of your GW paints with these as you've traditionally been pretty consistent with GW contrast in your videos.
I do layer the models but there are instances where just leaving it as a base coat works just fine. As for the use of these paints. I have a rule that if I’m working on GW models I use gw paints. As most people painting them will have those paints.
Metallics are mostly a hoax, but the WORST ever is Orc Skin. Compare it with Vallejo Xpress Orc Skin and it's night and day. But the rest... absolutely a step up.
In your more recent videos, I only ever see you using GW Contrast paints and never these. Is it fair to say that you aren't too impressed with them having had more time with them?

Second would you start to replace any of your GW paints with these as you've traditionally been pretty consistent with GW contrast in your videos.
I do layer the models but there are instances where just leaving it as a base coat works just fine.
As for the use of these paints. I have a rule that if I’m working on GW models I use gw paints. As most people painting them will have those paints.
Metallics are mostly a hoax, but the WORST ever is Orc Skin. Compare it with Vallejo Xpress Orc Skin and it's night and day. But the rest... absolutely a step up.
Not sure about a hoax lol. But i need to do more testing to be sure.
In your more recent videos, I only ever see you using GW Contrast paints and never these. Is it fair to say that you aren't too impressed with them having had more time with them?
I use contrast paints for tutorials for GW models because it’s easier for people to get them along with their models!
@@MediocreHobbies Ah, ok, thanks for the reply. Really enjoy your accessible painting style bud, helped me get back into the hobby again after years away! 👍
I don't mean to come across rude but your voice over MIC has an annoying whine during it. I thought my ears were playing up. Love the paint job I just thought I'd mention it :)
Ye I’m not great at the hardware side of things I bought a new mic and sound board and have been fighting with it for weeks lol.
Smear that green on an ork
Hahaha yes sir.
The fact that you didn’t see any issue on the ver 1 and the fact that they issued a ver 2 concerns me
Companies improve their products all the time, some customers had issues and they addressed them really well!
Stop inhaling through your mouth. Work on breathing through your nose.
