In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm joined by my wife Megan, and we're listening to a profound and beautiful song by Kate Bush called This Woman's Work. Originally written for the movie She's Having a Baby, the song has gone on to be covered by many artists and used in many movies and television shows. We start by watching the official video that Kate directed, and we conclude by watching a stirring dance routine choreographed to the song. We hope this reaches you and provides comfort where needed. Peace.

Kate is one of the few who deserves to be called a "genius." She explores the depths of the psyche through the myth and mystery expressed or evoked in her music and lyrics
Kate stands alone total genius.
Kate is just different class as a composer writer and singer, her songs are still as powerful and beautiful today. Amazing woman
Perfect 👌
Kate Bush somehow captures those emotions in a stunning fashion. Seeing my wife wheeled away to the operating theatre for an emergency caesarean section and the sense of uselessness I felt is a unique experience. Every time I hear this song it takes me back to that room in the hospital, and never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Both mother and daughter (born six weeks early) were fine, still happily married and daughter is at university! How time flies!
So happy for you. Thanks for sharing that powerful story
Thank you for sharing your story. Love to you and your family.
Her song Cloudbusting should be right up your alley. She is very talented
amazing song
@@am4082 I really like the album Hounds of Love
Ninth Wave Suite...
@@wojciechmakowski2304 That would be a great review by Doug! :D
@@nebhoteproville SECONDED. I was just thinking yesterday how I'd love to see Dr. Doug take on The Ninth Wave suite; would make for a terrific Masterpiece Friday.
This woman is a powerhouse. She has a lot to say. She had a bit of mentoring from a friend of a friend, David, when she was 15 and wrote her first big hit. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, that was. A very gifted artist.
Ah the wonderful Kate. She exploded into my life with her first album The Kick Inside and I've loved her ever since. Stunning, unique artist.
As to Maxwell - no thanks, give me Kate.
Me too 💚loved her from the beginning I became spellbound at 15!!!💜🎶
I am breaking a personal rule by watching this. To me, die to an event in my personal life, I find this incredible song the most devastatingly emotionally affecting piece I have ever heard, so much so, that the power of the song is too much for me to hear. It takes me right back to that place in my life that was genuine heartbreak. It is a work of sheer majesty and it is achingly beautiful, it is the one song that makes me weep every time. Thank you for covering this amazing work from a real musical phenomenon
I so agree...so very poignant and haunting!
You guys make a great team. Kate is from another world. We gotta give credit to Dave Gilmour who produced her first album when she was 17 years old and enabled the world to get to know Kate's music.
Gilmour was 'executive producer' on two songs from her first album, recorded when she was 16, two years before the rest of the album was made.
@@joannetelling Yep. He did help her get her start. He saw it as a small token of support. Guess he knew what he had heard.
@@joannetelling yep, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" and "Saxophone Song." The third song that Gilmour financed, "Humming," (an incredible song about David Bowie) remained unrelased until her 2018 remastering project
@@mvellis3863 it's so sad that Kate Bush never worked with Bowie. They are so alike in some sense. Not only because of Lindsay Kemp. They were able to create something supernatural together.
Kate takes you to different worlds. She IS all emotions: making you feel happy, sad, brave, lost, winning, sexy, ugly,, strong,… she knows and shows it all! She is a gift to ones who wanna listen and feel. She is just so pure!
Kate's music is Art in its truest sense. It is progressive in the sense that it is a fearless comment on life without musical and lyrical compromises. To me, she's up there with the very best of them.
She was always one of those artists of whom, you got her or you didn't. I still love her song BE KIND TO MY MISTAKES. One of the best relationship songs ever to me.
Kate Bush deserves full albums analysis.
I feel like I need to say something because Kate Bush has been a very favorite artist of mine since I heard her song "Moving" from "The Kick Inside". Instantly hooked. As for this particular song, well it brings the tears every time, doesn't it? Looking forward to more KB listens with you, Helverings. I'm all about that 9th Wave Suite you've been mentioning.
Looking forward to Ninth Wave suite! ❤️
Kate Bush is the most important female in music over the last 40 years
This song always moves me to tears, ever since the first time I heard it on the album in 1989, the first cd I bought when I had my first cd player. I was young then and I had not experienced much hardship yet, but I could still feel it. Kate is a unique and amazing artist, one of my absolute favourites.
She's a wonderfully creative force of nature. It's a long journey that rarely disappoints and often surprises :)
Hounds of Love - the whole album! First half is the best 80’s synth pop you’ll ever find and the second half is straight up prog rock conceptual genius.
John Hughes sent her a video of the scene from the film, Kate put it on and sat at the piano, 20 minutes later she had the song.
Kate is absolutely unique. I'd recommend doing "Don't Give Up," a duet she did with Peter Gabriel, a very powerful and emotional song. Well worth a listen and reaction. In fact, how about a vocal duets week on the channel? So many great ones, even crossing over to prog and metal!
A great song, but written by Gabriel alone.
I also recommend “Don’t Give Up” as it strongly dovetails with “This Woman’s Work”. It’s almost as though they could be sequences from the same story but that’s also probably just an aspect of their universality.
@@dinsdale23432 Kate didn’t write don’t give up though, Peter Gabriel wrote it for his 1986 album SO.
Cause another legend Peter Gabriel don’t give up don’t give up fantastic track maybe the track that you could cover
Nice to see Tim McInnerny in this video, beautiful song from Kate
"Darling, make it go away."
@@Ricketik65 only Brits and Blackadder fans got that!
Kate is notable for tackling the theme of emotional support in her performances - a prime example is in her duet with Peter Gabriel, 'Don't Give Up', though it was he who wrote the song. Recommended.
Gave me chills the moment Kate opened her mouth right to the end!
Great to see Kate Bush being discussed. She's unique with so many powerful songs in her long career. The albums "The Dreaming" is well worth diving into track by track as each one so bizarre and compelling, "The Hounds of Love" has many big tracks on the first side, but it's the second side "The Ninth Wave" to would be well worth doing a long session on - an equal to Suppers Ready in musical range and story telling.
Kate is an unknown icon. Her voice is exquisite and the composition is ethereal and complex. Kate always takes me to a stronger place,
I enjoyed meeting your wife. I’d love to see her more often.
Sometimes it seems that breathing stops in the face of a situation so well described, so well delivered that it touches us and makes us understand how to feel what the other feels.
Even if we have never experienced that situation.
It's magical... the power of music.
Musical art is the most dynamic and organic of the arts, as if music gave life to a statue or painting or a book or photograph, and these animate themselves, thus benefiting from an even greater freedom of expression.
Art helps the truly blind and truly deaf because the figuratively deaf and blind disdain art.
I hadn't noticed Tim McInnerny in the original video before, but I've listened to The Sensual World on CD many times.
A wonderful, heartfelt review. Many thanks both. I had the pleasure of seeing Kate play live on her Tour of Life back in the day (sadly missed her more recent tenure in London). Kate's music has been ever present in my life. I had the pleasure of meeting her at an album signing 'Never for Ever' and wrote to her to say thanks. SHE WROTE BACK! (That letter is a treasured momento...A moment of pleasure). Thanks for the link. Always look forward to your analysis - there's a lifetime worth of joy to be gleaned from Kate's catalogue! All the very best to you both!
Kate as an artist goes way beyond mere musical recordings. She has always been a visual artist and her videos are extraordinary. The videos from The Sensual World are such works of art and Kate did most of the direction and videography, as well. Worth a credit also is Tim McInerny whose emotive performance in this is outstanding. One of the most stunning things I have ever seen in video is the scene that starts with Kate sitting down at the restaurant table - it morphs to her falling, being carried to the car, driving to hospital, being carried out and that is ONE uninterrupted shot - video magic!
Doug, you’ll have to cover Kate Bush album, The Hounds of Love; my favourite album of hers. Powerful lyrics, powerful music, wonderful singing. It covers a whole gamut of emotions and ideas. Glorious!
Brilliant that she did a childbirth song from the man’s point of view. Great songwriter, keyboard player, and singer. And she’s cute, too.😃
Beautiful - but it was a curse for her, especially early on. She was largely perceived as the new sexy young thing in the UK when she started, which led to many discounting her profound genius
Many years before her son came along.
PLEEEEEASE have a take on her song-cycle "The ninth wave" which is the second half of her masterpiece, the album "Hounds of Love". It is pure genius!
What I love about Kate's music is that you can put your own interpretation onto it, what it means for you and this song can mean any type of relationship that needs to be treasured 🙏💚💜🎶her music has saved me many times✨
Both the mother and the baby of the movie She's Having A Baby turn out OK.
Kate's character turns out OK too because of the nurse's smile at the of the music video.
This is my favorite Kate Bush song. It has gotten me through tough times emotionally and gave me the encouragement and strength to carry on. So I give her a lot of gratitude for writing, producing and performing this touching and beautiful song.
Kate has always been a phenomenal artist with the ability to touch us intimately within.
Her voice has a rare purity and as a composer she is truly gifted.
She has written so many superb tracks which all have remarkable impact on the listener that it becomes impossible to choose between them as each brings an experience of it's own. I personally love the Saxophone song which like so many others that she has produced leaves me in a frame of mind that I can only describe as "Haunted."
This song is very personal and precious to me. Back in 1993 after already having 2 miscarriages, my wife all of a sudden was feeling excruciating pain in her stomach. We hurried to the Hospital ER and she was found to be bleeding internally and she was filled with blood. The ultrasound found out she had an ectopic pregnancy. As she was rushed to O.R. for surgery I was sent to the waiting room as they told me she had lost quite a lot of blood and would need blood transfusions. I waited and worried it seemed for hours. I had already loved Kate Bush and this song for years and so it continued to play in my head over and over and over again as I cried and worried for the life of my dear wife. It really got me through a really tough ordeal. Almost 30 years later and 3 other high risk pregnancies' resulting in C sections, we have 6 wonderful children ( and 2 grand-daughters). This song still means so much to me and makes me cry almost every time I hear it !!!! Thank You Kate Bush for your amazing talent !!!!!!
Why would you put your wife through so many pregnancies when it nearly killed her? I couldn't fathom willingly risking my wife's life like that.
"The Ninth Wave" (which is side 2 of the vinyl album 'Hounds of Love') is arguably her best work. Best played in the dark through headphones to get the right atmosphere.
Genius I was 17 when Kate hit the Uk 🇬🇧 a beautiful songwriter, this is so emotional a beautiful song. ♥️ Thank you Kate.
I have been in love with Kate's music since she burst out to the scene around 1977 and I was nine. As far as raw talent goes I put her up there along Frank Zappa. Het catalogue is staggering. I would love ya Doug to have a listen to the the ninth wave what used to be the B-side of the Hounds of love album. Yep, the whole B-Side. Listen to it is one go because it's a continues story and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of her work.
Great review, thank you! Kate is really unique. You can’t go wrong with her, but a personal favourite is “Suspended In Gaffa”.
That is a beautiful work. Thank you for introducing me to both of these versions which made me cry right along with Megan.
Hi Doug and Megan, very moving to watch you both reacting to the wonderful Kate Bush.
Her debut album is one of my all time favourite albums by a woman. As others have said, it was written when she was seventeen, mentored by Dave Gilmour. Listen to the last 2 tracks about pregnancy together, Room for a Life and The Kick Inside - utterly brilliant. I’m unsure how big she is in the US but she is rightly one of the most successful women ever in the UK.
Open up your ears and your hearts to the wonderful KB. ❤️
this song is soul touching, my goodness! the, “I know you have a little life in you yet, I know you have a lot of strength left” part just does and says so much to me that I can’t help it and 😭tears just start streaming. Its just one of those songs.
Kate Bush....THE LONG AND FULL VERSION of "An Endless Sky of Honey" the full song of 42 minutes...!! Doug you need THIS!! :p
Kate has lots of superb things to go to, and yeah… this 42 minute songcycle is the absolute peak! One of the best things ever.
Definitely - it goes through so many moods and styles … stunning orchestral work too! Right up your alley.
So great you have been doing Kate. She is special. Nice fact is that David Gilmour paid a demo for her at yhe start of her career. Hope you will do more.
Superbe chanson, excellente interprétation. Very moving. what a magnificent voice !
Just wanted to say comment and say that I followed and subscribed because of this video.
For some completely unknown reason there aren’t many ‘this woman’s work’ (Original Kate Bush version) available on RUclips.
Now, I and a HUGE reaction video fan and I feel I connect with them, depending on who does it and what song it is.
This video had the most detailed and understanding reaction to this song which I truly believe it needs.
There are SO many that just don’t give it its credit or time or understanding.
Thanks guys
Thanks for another great reaction video. I'm so glad that you were both there for this one. Megans reaction really touched me. And Kate is just amazing too!
Thanks you two, I sure needed that. Yeah, music, the Arts, saved my life. Thanks for that. And thanks even more for your words at the end. I’m doing a group hug in my mind!
❤️❤️
Amazing that Kate Bush was signed by EMI at 11 years old after Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd heard her demos and championed her through her early career. Every now and again these true geniuses come along and blow our minds.
I'm glad Kate fans are keeping her craft alive! She's a muse of all women
My non existent allergies played up again watching the video clip.
The expectant father was played by Tim McInnery, He played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1990 West End production of The Rocky Horror Show. His performance can be heard on the soundtrack album of this production.
Your analysis of music is amazing. You're very insightful and accurate 👌
Some songs move me, Kate Bush moves me more than almost any other artist.
From UK, that's a British man's expression of 'Thank god it's ok'. The head tilt and shoulder's are how we show it. ( 70's kid)
Oh she’s just the best female artist alive.
Thanks for the words which put words into the background and helps us appreciate her even more.
Think it’s going to be a Kate Bush again tomorrow.
Thanks
Mozart, Bach, Chopin, Bush. She's right up there. Kate's a genius.
The Great Kate… such wonderful, always thought-provoking music. Her early connection with David Gilmour gave her the chance and contract, and her friendship with Peter Gabriel facilitated her ascension into producer status by lending his Fairlight… which resulted in this album.
She’s my fave female artist, even above Joni.
I love her Aerial album, which is well after she left the mainstream view.
I think its going to take you guys a hour or two to get over this song!!
I'm in bits. Kate is the best. Another of Kate's emotional rollercoaster songs is Moments of Pleasure, off her Red Shoes album.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
Thank you for sharing and opening up about your own experiences Doug, and particularly Megan.
I was also first exposed to this song through Maxwell’s cover. I don’t think SYTYCD was the first time I heard it, but I’ve definitely been exposed to a lot of great artists through that show.
Both artists gave their all! Thanks for your vulnerability in reaction
Thank you Jerke 💗
Kate Bush is from another (and much better) world. The 9th Wave...she's the best.
She also did a duet with Midge Ure, the singer from the band Ultravox. Brother/Sister that is very good and topical for all time.
A lot of people in pain from bereavement or loss relate to this song. Kate of course sang with Peter Gabriel on his DON’T GIVE UP which Elton John credits as saving his life in deep depression. I know a lot of singers are intimidated by this song - one of those songs that are actually much harder than they look. It is also so good that it can make you feel as if you can’t improve on it. She is the consummate artist. Of all the people that Stephen Wilson has remixed he was asked who HE would ask as the best job ever. No hesitation. He asked Kate Bush and she turned him down! At 19 she fought the record bosses to release WUTHERING HEIGHTS - she was so right! For me personally AERIAL is a masterpiece - found sounds like pigeons cooing nestle with stabs of orchestral texture - subjects covered from the domestic to the profound in a complex mixture of styles. I would endorse the suggestion of AN ENDLESS SKY OF HONEY - a masterpiece.! The actor in the clip by the way is well known to U.K. audiences TIM MCINNERNY was in a wonderful series called BLACK ADDER with ‘Mr Bean’ himself Rowan Atkinson the series followed a work shy cunning Machiavellian character whose schemes of skullduggery always failed. In the one set in the First World War called BLACKADDER GOES FORTH they mined a particularly rich vein of comedy and tragedy - Tim played Captain Darling - so there was a wonderful running gag whenever BLACKADDER had to go and see the stupid bumptious general brilliantly played by Stephen Fry, he would walk in and simply say: “hello Darling.” The audience would erupt every time.
Great heart felt passion from you both all the best great vid
Music is a world within itself with a language we all understand.
This song always makes me cry... it touches a very vunerable spot in the soul, it´s fragile and yet so beautiful. Thank you Kate Bush for ALWAYS making me feel and remember how it really feels to be alive.
“Hi, I react to songs without listening.” 😂
Kate Bush is legend.
This song always brings a tear, simply beautiful, and for those in the U.K, the guy in the video...that's Percy from Blackadder!!
Yes thank God for the arts!
That last scene in the video was all shot in one take-from the restaurant table to the gurney. Truly brilliant song and video. Love Kate Bush.
The Actor in the video is Tim McInnery, who is most famous in the UK for playing Captain Darling in the historical Comedy Blackadder

Help spread the story and the work of this amazing and awesome human beeing. Jason totally deserves it.
A very moving video, thank you for reacting to Kate bush, I was hoping you’d include her soon. I recommend her song Rockets Tail to you. Loads of layers to it, she wrote it to showcase the Trio Bulgarka (Bulgarian choir) she was working with at that time. Dave Gilmour also features heavily on guitar, evoking the rocket’s journey. So much excellence crammed into one song.
Hey Doug, just a quick shout out... you and Megan are a GREAT couple. I loved watching you two communicate. I could feel the love between you both.
I don’t often cry at movies but I remember crying during the scene in She’s Having A Baby when this song played. I’ve always loved it but have to admit I think Maxwell’s version seems a poor cousin to Kate’s. Just my opinion. Kate stands as one of the greatest female artists in modern music. Hope there will be lots more Kate. It would be fun to watch you do the second side of the Hounds of Love album. My thoughts go out to all women struggling with illness and my deep hope is that you have someone to help you through.
Maxwell's version is awful.
This song is from the 1989 Kate album, "The Sensual World."
A piece of music that I will always reccomend to someone is Gut's theme from Berserk, it's also called "4 Gatsu". It is hauntingly beautiful and perfectly manages to convey the feeling of being lost and alone, not knowing where to go or what to do next with your life, as you are surrounded in an endless dark depression, and yet you can still somehow someway, find a small glimmer of hope coming through telling you that everything will be okay. It is THE "press play, close your eyes, listen, and think about your life at 3am" song.
Pleased I'm not the only one who didn't get through that without weepy eyes. Kates version got me, it always does.
were you crying because of the music or because this idiot kept talking over the music the entire video lmao
@@goldenboy140 why are you viewing this analysis video then?
just watch the official vid if you don't want interruptions.
This track has an interesting history. Kate Bush initially gave it away for inclusion on the soundtrack to the 1988 film She's Having A Baby before reclaiming it on her 1989 album The Sensual World where it became the second single from that album. In 1990 it gave its title to a boxset of her back catalogue and now it's kind of the title track to her whole career.
The scene where this song is used in She's Having A Baby is so powerful. Makes me cry every time. Here is the whole scene ... good luck not crying. How is she not in the Rock Hall of Fame? ruclips.net/video/9MZWrEfB_VM/видео.html
Just for your future reference this music video which Kate produced and directed is NOT about her having or losing a baby, but of course she did write the song for the movie about the baby story. But according to Kate Bush herself this music video is just about a relationship between a woman and man and something happens to her and she collapses and he rushes her to the hospital. She is in danger of dying, and he is thinking of "all the things he should have said and done" and part of her is comforting him, even though she is not really physically "awake"...and then at the end the nurse tells him that she is going to make it and be okay. There is no being pregnant or baby involved in this music video at all.
how does this register in the six degrees of separation to kevin bacon - reviewing a song from a movie in which kevin bacon played... By the way, Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Ayreon, Godmother of Dutch metal female lead singers) is touring with a show full of Kate Bush songs. She sang a beautiful song with Peter Gabriel, Don't Give Up.

Kate Bush is a genius
She is an icon.. and she is a British National treasure.
She should be a Dame.. and I don't understand why she isn't.
Oh and I too have discovered SO much great music through SYTYCD.
Not this.. but so many other things. Maxwell does a lovely job with this song.. and that routine is in the show's lexicon for ever.
Kate, right out of the gate, was avant-garde. I heard The Kick Inside and Wuthering Heights my last year in college… and fully connected with her in 1982 when PBS aired her live concert performance… which made me love her.
Hearing side 2 of the Hounds of Love album blew my mind… and she’s forever in my heart.
She never toured after the first time, but finally announced a sort of residency in 2014 at London’s Hammersmith - 22 shows spread over about 6 weeks,
and tix sold out in 15 minutes.
I couldn’t make it, which really broke my heart… and they have no plans to release the video - though the have put the special CD on sale… Before the Dawn, with a special performance of that Side 2 of Hounds.

Kate is a genius.
Kate resolves the cycle when she’s ready and not before
Yesterday I was a little disparaging about Kate Bush's vocal tone in the early days (too...um...screechy) on another reaction video. This is the exact opposite. Her voice has matured by this track (by The Dreaming actually) and the gorgeous timbre matches the quality of the music and songwriting. A class act.
If you're referring to Wuthering Heights, the screechy-ness is deliberate because she's singing the part of a ghost
yes the vocal pitch was intentional for Wuthering Heights.
Oooh! You should definitely react to the title song from "The Sensual World." I so love that song, as I love all of Kate's work.
You will not hear a better female vocal performance. Next level.
