Building a Square Off Grid Log Cabin| Lifting Heavy Logs | Squirrel Confit for Lunch

- Lifting heavy hemlock timbers is difficult so I rig up a cable winch system to help raise them into place on the small square log cabin I'm building for a workshop.
Over the open fire, I cook grouse, pheasant and squirrel, slow cooked in a cast iron fire in duck fat.

When I was a kid in the Finger Lakes region of New York, back in the 1960's, our family dog ran free with all the other dogs in the neighborhood. There was a gang of kids and a gang of dogs. Each kid and dog played all day; swam laid in the sun, ate food off the ground and made sure they were home for dinner each evening, only to come out again after a good breakfast each morning. and start the day all over again. Our dogs ran in the fields, brought home rabbits to eat in the front yard. They swam in the lake and creek. They chased away missionaries and salesmen. They had a charmed life, as we ourselves did. Today I am sitting on my couch watching the neighbor go by with her german shepherd on a flashy plastic bejeweled leash, and a doggie raincoat. My own dog wont go out because it is raining and she is asleep on a pillow by the fire. All well and good but it gives me GREAT joy to see the truly charmed life that Cali has. l'm sure that if my own dog could watch your channel she would be waxing eloquent about her master, how she used to run free in the woods, sleep on the ground, climb the highest trees and go home only for dinner, half frozen and a muddy mess and now look at her, fat and sassy, sitting on the couch watching other people walk their dogs.
My life here in Australia as a kid too. Unfortunately gone forever.
Ah yes....our free-range childhoods!
My dog love's going to our cabin with me and riding on the trail's in the back of my Yamaha Rhino and stopping at a remote lake so she can swim then riding some more and stopping once in a while too walk through the wood's and pick up stick's. I love my girl.
Hi Shawn please go pick up your package 📦 I sent you. It should be there by now.
My childhood was just as you described. It was amazing. My mom actually wrote a series of children's books based the Adventures of Dora Belle Lee, our beloved "Irish Cart Hound". She was the ringleader of the local gang if dogs. My Dad determined the breed from a picture he saw in National Geographic of an Irishman and his dog sitting on a old horsedrawn cart but, she was actually a border collie mix we got from the local pound. Those were wonderful days.
Definitely your channel is my safe haven, I can’t stand broadcast tv anymore.
But the Commercialization of YT has caught up to TV. 🤬

I live deep in the city, sit in traffic, work 12 hour shifts, sit in traffic some more, sleep, and repeat. Your videos give me hope for my life. Thank you.
Then Dave, Get out of debt. That's the first step to getting a grip on the life you want. NOTHING can be done if you are sweating the banks.
Yeah dave i done that my entire life! Spent as much time in traffic, as i did working. Lol or so it seemed. So many times i asked myself if this was really worth it. But we seem to get caught in the rat race. So i began paying my bills off, got out of debt & never looked back. So glad i did that. Started saving money & gonna buy a place in country & not owe anyone. Its so freeing not to owe ppl. I wish you many blessings & Jehovah Gods blessing on you, fam & in your storehouse.

Thanks for showing us how wonderful life can be free from crowding, noise and crime. You have built in a wonderland of beauty. It only took very hard work, and a commitment to build a life that you wanted.

How true. I always wanted to live on a Pacific island by myself as a kid but of course couldn't. Made do by running around here in the local Australian country side and enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities with with others or by myself. It didn't bother me either way. Sadly no longer available to most kids. They're missing out on so much.

Sweet Cali looks to keep herself entertained. It's great to have a best friend to spend time with! I have learned how to use some more of my father's tools. He's 84 and doesn't use them much anymore. I know from watching you that I have to take care of them. I'm greatful for everything I learned growing up on the farm. I was youngest so I always got stuck cleaning the small game. As I got older they taught me to clean bigger game. I appreciate you showing me such great things! There is so much more to life people don't appreciate. Can't miss what they never had I guess! Be safe and blessings to you! ✌🙏💪
I also grew up on a farm - kids raised in cities and towns have no idea what they have missed, besides learning that hard work will not kill you, but gives you a sense of pride in producing your own food and that of your animals. I miss those halcyon days of boyhood, now at 77.
@@retiredyeti5555 It's definitely a generation of entitlement. It was hard work and long days. My best friends were my horse and dog. I wouldn't dare change a thing. I sure do miss it. ✌🙏
I have an old Griswold Dutch oven too. Cooking outside in cast iron makes everything you cook taste better.
Griswold? They should make a movie about Griswolds ~8^).
I love the life that you have built for yourself out there. Truely amazing!
I just sent your video to both my sons , their father died when both boys were very young and they didn't get a chance to learn from him , but he was just like you in the woods and was such a strong individual hard worker , I hope both of my young men stop to look at your channel , and get addicted to you like their mother is I have learned so much from you . thank you
You are so lucky to have Cali with you she is a treasure. And a good supervisor 😀
Truly man's best friend.

Thanks for sharing!!!! The forest teaches us to love the forest, the animals, the plants and flowers, and one another. We go into the forest and it cleanses, both mind and body, and we leave refreshed and renewed. Thanks again from North Carolina, USA.
Shawn you are an audience charmer. Every Friday, (which is my day off) I'm glued to my couch watching your videos.
Fabulous! What a glorious place to live and prosper!
I’m a 71 year old woman living on 4 1/4 acres in NC. I have a lovely home (originally a foreclosure with a lot of work done) but would love to build a small guest cabin in the woods for when family comes to visit. My husband died last year so that may be out now, but I love watching you build, cook and enjoy life. It has been a Godsend and has given me so much peace during this difficult year. Thanks for sharing your life with us. I🥰
Another work of art. Beautiful location, amidst the falling leaves, everything golden and red, the smoke, the logs, the fireplace, it's living art!
I’ve been a viewer for years, and it NEVER fails: in every video there is point where I ask myself, “What is he doing?!”
Lol!
Oh, good, I'm new, and a gal to boot, so am now and again scratching my head, for instance when he showed us the wood. Was it insect riddled? I thought when I first saw it, it looked a bit like cedar. Shame if a nice wood got eaten, lolololol.
I think a lot of folks are wondering why the building, although quite nice, and super sturdy, seems small for a workshop,. I've learned a lot in the comments, tho, as well as from Mr James. 😊
Oh, and then there was the time I thought he was headed to the outhouse, and well, he was, but he came out with tools....
In a previous video, Shawn said this is the workshop. Bit on the small side, but then he doesn’t have a bunch of power tools. I’m sure he will make it work
I also inevitably find myself saying: "Hmm, watcha doin' Shawn?" and then find out it doesn't matter if I know right away. I still enjoy watching it and knowing it will eventually become clear. I really enjoy the channel and find it very motivational. I won't be building any cabins but I'm no longer afraid to try new projects at the house. They may not be perfect but the joy is in the attempt, the journey.
For me it’s always “What is she doing?”. Cali cracks me up!
Nailed it! I am so happy to see a long video again finally! Though: I appreciate that your absolute top priority is to make your family safe. Wish you a nice weekend and stay fine!
I love videos like this, nature and affection with dogs
Oooo, a Shawn video in the older style! I was beginning to wonder if we would ever get a longer build video again. Good to see it!

Awesome! Peace my friend! To see you getting back to the ways of old is very heart warming. May the CREATOR watch over you and Cali all the rest of your days.
Oh what would we do without your videos. Coffee on the porch, sunrise and a self reliance video. Ahhh life is good right about now. Hug Cali for me. 👌
What are the piers at the cabin corners made of? And why did you put birch bark under the first course?
1:28 Cali's amazing camouflage!
Just a very SIMPLE..Thank you Shawn James for being you and what you do..I LOVE your channel..And Cali also
Another most excellent video. Always a pleasure. Work like a slave, eat like a king! Thank you.
Holy Moly, those are the biggest nails I have ever seen! What a beautiful setting for your workshop!
43 minutes, what a treat! Building already looks good and rock solid. Have a nice weekend Shawn!
I started watching this while thawing out a couple of small chuck steaks for supper, and wishing that I had some squirrel in the freezer - haven't had one of those in there for some 30 odd years. Can still taste it in my mind, though. My mouth was watering by the time you were eating your meal, and I had already grilled the steaks and we had eaten our supper. I would have added a snatch block at the bottom of the pulley system, to reduce the strength/power needed to lift the beams. But then, I am not as strong as you or as young! Cali is in her idea of dog heaven, with a loving and patient master. As always, stay safe.
Shawn, my APOLOGIES. You are doing everything the way it should be done. From 2008 till present, with many health issues, sucks. Here in the northeast, CODES, CODES Dictate what we can and can't do. Had a home, my own well, septic and i still heated with wood for 31 year's. Divorced after 27 years, bike accident in 2002, caused many issues. Love what your doing. Enjoy, we never know.. peace.

This man is the epitome of "work smarter, not harder"
I learn so much from watching these videos keep up the good work!
I love what you do Shawn. Your love of nature, your family and a certain simplicity of life. I am a woman who really appreciates your videos and your way of life. It is a way of life I have dreamed of for many years. I know it is hard work and not always that simple But you sure make it look like a dream. Many blessing to you and yours.
There's that sweet dummy-chasing girl ! Ok... squirrel-fetcher too. Nice visual touch to the timbers, putting a chamfer on the edge. Nothing like the cut of a good/sharp (and tuned) plane.
Also, by lifting the timber with only a single pulley at the top you're lifting the timber at 1-to-1 ratio. So if the timber is 100lbs you need to put 100lbs on your end of the cable to lift it. If you added a snatch block at the timber you would cut the force required to lift the timber to 50lbs. If you did a pully system with a double pulley at the top and a double pulley at the timber, you would be reducing the force required to lift the timber down to 25lbs. A couple of small changes to make your job a lot easier.
You say snatch block, and my brain immediately jumps to the channel Smarter Every Day. Destin did an episode basically dedicated to the snatch block, (and other force multipliers).
You are very right sir.
need to double the length you pull to half the force.
@@nicko9715 When I saw shawns Instagram post then watched how Shawn rigged up his pulley in the video I immediately thought of that smarter every day video and that's why I commented.
And a hella va lot more rope with less speed...
We need more videos like this on the internet 💯 the younger generation could learn so much from watching this guy 💙💙

loved this video! late fall in the woods, the construction, and of course Cali! I also understand that plans change, and that you just have to roll with them. it's good to see you using the ATV, and the sawmill for that matter. nothing wrong with making life a little easier and it takes nothing away from self reliance!
Every single video you put up on both of your channels gets a thumbs up from me Shawn. Keep pushing. You are an original.
I love the bushy tail. A lot of people over look squirrel as a meat source but I eat a lot of them. You get more than you expect from a squirrel, they’re delicious and abundant. Not to mention versatile.
That’s a great idea what you did with the birch paper, nice and waterproof
Jared, I was confused there... was he using that to level more precisely?
He very well could’ve I didn’t even think of that, birch bark is water resistant so I thought he was using natural materials for waterproofing but he might’ve used it to level also!?
@@jaredscabinlife2868 I think your explanation is more likely than mine. I kept thinking it couldn’t be raising the log much, but Shawn is so precise, I thought he might just do that.
He is very precise I’m really wondering now if he did that to level it I’m not quite sure. I can’t tell if he did all four corners or not?
@@jaredscabinlife2868 I’m not sure either since edits remove repetitive things.

Another comforting video, Shawn. Takes me back to my childhood in the 50's. Knew all the neighbors and all the dogs. Built forts at the creek behind the house and swam in the river. Felt so proud when I would catch enough fish for supper. I'm afraid those days are gone forever.
I love to see you building again, especially now that it's autumn. These are defenitely my favourite video's!
I'd say that was a lot of work just to get a cutting board at ergonomic working height.
🤣🤣🤣👍
Beautiful yellow leaves, beautiful country.
Thank you so much Shawn love your videos! 👍👍👍💯💯💯
The workshop really is tiny. Like Dancingdice, I really wonder how such a small space would work for future projects. enjoy the Dutch oven cooking.
I'm confused too, but that's part of the journey for us. Also I'm sure James will talk about it over on his other channel, which I'm really looking forward do. Perhaps this isn't the kind of workshop you and I have in our minds. No doubt it will all make sense as it progresses.
Looks more like a tool shed than a workshop.
I am guessing that his square logs are so heavy and awkward that he had to limit them in length so he could physically stack them high enough. Therefore, the overall size of the building had to be smaller. Perhaps Shawn might answer.
I believe the idea is to do the majority of his projects with the workshop just outside of it, in its shade so to speak thats why he is leaving the canopy above intact. There is planned a second building just next to the one he is building now probably to the left of the fireplace, or so he intimated when he discussed it before.
He'll be using hand tools and they take much less space than a conventional workshop and power tools. It'll be interesting to see how it comes together.
Most relaxing channel a life saver!
