    Not many people have the mental fortitude that you possess to do what you’re doing. You’re drive and ambition is inspiring. After watching you spend years building and establishing your old homestead, and then have to see you give it all up and start over, was truly heartbreaking. I would have probably given up and gone back to my old life. I’ve been a fan from beginning, and look forward to following you on your new journey.

      Hey Burnik, How long would it take to peel the average log after yeah got good with the draw knife?

    • @burnik7844
      @burnik7844 3 года назад +4

      @@QuewithQ I am now 62 and that was when I was in my mid 20's but guessing it took maybe a half-hour, maybe I am dreaming and it was 45 min. as you had to roll it, but I also had a crane and put them on sawhorses, which was easier than doing it on the ground like Shawn. My draw knife was maybe 10 to 12 inches, so a bit shorter than Shawns. We also sanded our logs with a power sander. I do remember that the butt end of the log kind of sucked as the bark was much thicker. We used mostly red pine. Hope I answered your question. :)

      I've peeled logs using a sharp round point shovel. It gives you good leverage and is easier on the arms and back. Spring is the best time to peel when the sap is running.

    If the creek near your cabin is running all year you could envisage to have a hidraulic ram or a solar pump to have water where you need it (garden, shower, kitchen etc) which would free you to do more.
    Running water also brings to mind perhaps with a small dam the possibility of generating electricity for the workshop.

To wait for the thawing and melting of winter, seeing the soil appear, the tree stumps, knowing you're able to begin digging and laying the foundation, wow, I fully understand how you chose the title of this video. I would build a green house first. You would be protected from the weather, can sleep in there,
    grow plants, put your cooking stove in there. Might give you a different perspective for your cabin.

      Shawn you can never delete trichinosis cooking your pork, with It developers as arthritis forming around fingers and muscle tissues aches etc. I’m not a doctor but I don’t eat pork etc. all my life & yes plant base food is the answer to all ailments mostly. 🌺🙋🏻‍♀️Hawaii

    As I sit on my lazy boy under warm blankets watching my favorite u tuber, I shiver watching Cali in that cold water. Her tail always wagging. I love watching you create Shawn. You are my guilty pleasure. So happy that you are going to live free of nasty neighbors and work trucks going by your cabin. It’s unfortunate about your neighbor. It’s exciting that we all get to watch you build your new homestead. Consider putting the master bedroom on the ground floor. Stairs are harder as we age.
    Thank you for sharing with your u tube followers.😀

    I think as soon as it is practicable to do it, I would build a set of stairs down to the stream where you get your water. It will save your legs and be safer. We had a tent camping site we used every year for weeks of trout fishing and deer hunting. The river bank was nearly vertical and we dug steps in the gravel bank parallel with the bank and used saplings for support and leveled for a level step for carrying water up from the spring that flowed into the river. What a difference it made. Watching you reminded me of it. How you design it is up to you but I guarantee it will make your life easier.

    Fascinating to see the differences between this and the initial cabin build. The smaller logs were consistent in size & finish. With these you will have less notching time but if using these as they are, will have much more weight to lift. Its going to be interesting. Good thing Cali remains on the job to supervise & make sure you stop & play for a minute now & then. So given how much you've learned, the difference in the new site & nearby clean running water, plus all the tools & having a place to keep them, the process will be unique and worth watching. Looking forward to seeing your new home develop.

    Cali reminds me of my Flat Coat Retriever, I lost in 2018. He was 13 and had a stroke 3 weeks before my precious man passed away. It broke my heart losing Pup and then the blow of Mark passing about did me in. I rescue and I’ve had so many different breeds of dogs. All are special. No matter if they are Heinz 57s or purebred. Right now I have a Morkie, May. I rescued her in 2012. She’s approx 10 and lived on the streets when I finally caught her and took her in. I also have a Frenchi, name Georgia. I bought her in 2019. Her 2nd birthday was February 2nd. She didn’t come from that great of a situation either. In the past year I’ve lost 3 of my dogs. A chihuahua name Sophie. My mother’s beloved pet. She was 14. She had congestive heart failure and also kidney failure. My Black and Tan dachshund name Hank. He was 15. He passed away here at home from a sudden heart attack. He also had heart failure and was being monitored by the vet. And a rescue I took in name Rosie. She lived on the streets. Unfortunately she attacked May and nearly killed her and also had stalked one of my granddaughters. It broke my heart when the vet told me there was no way to place her with another family. Rosie was too unpredictable with children and small animals. There was no way I was going to place her unless we could find a responsible person to give her a loving home. I still feel I betrayed her. My vet told me I gave her a loving home and she had more than she would have ever had if I had not taken her in. Unfortunately in our area, there are so many abused and feral animals. Both cats and dogs. It’s heartbreaking. It’s wonderful when I see pets loved like Cali is loved. Thank you also, for all the care you take in wildlife. Many people don’t realize how much hunters contribute to the ecology and the conservation of land and wildlife. Take care and once again thank you for the wonderful videos.
