Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me.

I watch all your channels; but I must admit ( rather silly) that I miss watching you cook in your outdoor kitchen.
Build stuff + cook food + Cali = Perfect
I really miss this type of video. Thanks, Brother.
Ditto.
Shawn, all of us realize that your efforts are spread pretty thin these days. For myself, I am not interested in the other two projects but encourage you to succeed and be safe. I started watching because of the building and homestead, I will keep watching.
I watch all of your channels but, I prefer this one. Thank you for your hard work.
Glad to see you back on this channel, Enjoy watching you build by hand that beautiful homestead
Back to the building, my favourite type of video
Don’t know if you’ll see this with all these comments but please never leave the handle in the down position on those hi lift jacks when under load, I learnt the hard way when the handle on one came up and hit me in the face, near smashed my jaw off, all teeth through my face, the handle coming back up on people happens often I’ve since learnt, been watching the channel since the early days when you built the first hut, been a great channel over the years, thanks for sharing all the useful information and tips, I’ve learnt and enjoyed it a lot, thanks mate
Learnt is not a word. Learned is.
@@user-ex8jm5fo5u I’m Australian, hence British English spelling, learnt was a word long before learned was, but hey ya learn something new everyday eh lol
@@MarkLinno81I'm from Central Europe and engl is not my first language at all, but I understood you well! 😆
God knows how many mistakes I made right now, shame on me! 😂
Cheers!
Cali has certainly mastered the "Poor Pitiful Puppy "eyes for her ball-throwing plea !
Our pets are a huge blessing for us...such a sweet girl !
The farming stuff on other channels is interesting, but THIS CHANNEL is the original. Please don't forget about the girl you brought to the dance.
😂
@@herciliawalter716I agree 100 %
Agree … growing food is good for the body; creating and building is good for the soul
I've always appreciated the split, one channel for talking, one for doing. I love seeing someone build something, I'd hate to lose that.
True ❤
This is my favourite channel of the three.
Only channel for me
Whilst I know this workshops will end up another masterpiece, in Shawn's hand, it pains me to see that beautiful little building been dismantled, after watching every process of its build. It has been my absolute favourite. Now I wait to see what Shawn will do with it now.
I’m going to comment today, which I rarely do because I want to express how much of a positive influence you are on me and others. You are truly leading by example and I love the content on all your channels even though I found you here first. I don’t need any apology or explanation for your video upload schedule. I’m just happy you allow us into a slice of your life to follow along at all.
Great to see you building again. It’s interesting to watch your ideas come to fruition. With all that you have going on, it’s another quantum leap for you and your family.
You two are taking on a lot !
All your hard work and that rush before the snow Flies always a challenge .
In the End you can look back at everything you've done and Smile .
Enjoy that warm feeling inside knowing it's all BEEN a labour of LOVE..
👍❤
I love your sisters homestead. Those building are Awesome! It's so great to see an historical farm functioning and buildings being lived in and maintained as a home, not a museum.
Don’t care for the other channels, but like to watch you building stuff.
I assure you Shawn, I've been watching all your channels with interest although I have to admit that I enjoy your building videos the best.
I’m glad you guys were able to make that last trip to connect with your fathers past!
Hi, it's Kerri from Australia. All I want to say here today is that this guy is working so freaking hard to provide for his family and himself. I rent a one bedroom apartment upstairs with no yard, and I grow a mulberry tree, an orange tree, a lemon tree with a few herbs at my dads house 20 minute walk, or 5 minute bike ride away from my apartment. I like Shawn's principles so much about utilising and sharing. It makes perfect sense. I would love to own one or two acres to have my own place, but can only afford to rent, but dad has a quarter of an acre, so why not grow things there??? Seen as I am at his house looking after him 5 days out of 7, why not? I collect coffee beans for free at the local cafe, seaweed from the beach to put back into the poor soil here to try and improve it. Shawn has indirectly taught me a lot, and at 56 - I am still learning. I have seen some people's comments about their channel choice. It's easy to scroll on if you are not happy with either of his channels. This guy is a hard worker and a nice person, and he deserves all of the fruits of his hard work.
Great way of thinking.
Well said Kerri and I agree!
Those jacks you were using, we call them Kangaroo Jacks. Most scary and dangerous Jack I know of. We also called them kill-em quick jacks because if you got it wrong they killed you quick. In a former life I was a railway wagon repairer and we used those jack’s out in the field to lift railway wagons.
Great job! You are such a hard working man and your videos are always inspiring and encouraging.
Great to see You building again Shawn even if it is only a small project compared to most of the other buildings.
I love that Anvil you have laying around! You are Living Life Abundantly! I admire you so much Brother ! You have millions of people cheering for you. God Bless you and your family....and Cali!
Good morning. It's good to see you and Cali. Thank you.
It’s going to be so wonderful as usual when you expand your homestead to make it work for your whole family e family! I pray you stay healthy and strong to carry out all these ginormous tasks you set for yourself. Bless your precious Cali as she is truly a huge blessing too. Her love and support mean so much. She is a wonder and we all love her so much
This guy just builds and builds… a BUILDING MACHINE 😂… I’ve been watching Sean for over 5 years… from his first build… he’s still building!!!👍🌻
He are an ant
He has to earn a living somehow and doesn't do it for free.
You sure do so nice work and have lots of ideas I remember when you first started to now sure has put you in good shape
is there anyone that can do it better? dont think so
@@wedemgoyz7678 so true!
Always great to see you and Cali out being busy working
in the outdoors have a nice weekend and thanks.👋🦮🇨🇦
I watch all of your channels, and am excited for you and the family to combine resources for self reliance of an extended family. This is beginning to look more like a mini village! Bravo. Give Cali a BIG SMOOCH from Mike & Ronnie. God Bless
Im
It's nice to see Callie back from a break and posting on My Self Reliance again.
Thank Mr. James, I always love your videos. Thank for sharing your knowledge and Cali the world .God Bless. One message I take away from this post today, and you are correct about, " When you have responsibility YOU have to take care of it and not expect others to ."
There is not much better of a wakeup call , than to have a Farm Jack smack you in the face. I had heard about the dangers but had done lots of lifting with them with no problem, then one day , I was tired and forgot to reset the jack went over and moved it slightly and caught it right in the side of the face, I reeled around like I was punch drunk for a few minutes out beside the house, trying to figure out what to do. I finally just sat down until my faculties came back.
Love watching each of your channels. No grass growing under your feet that's for sure. 😊
It was fun trying to guess exactly what you were doing! (Recall I am an 80-year old city woman). Continually impressed with how you do all this alone!
Thank you for sharing. It's great you have family all working on the same goal, or at least to support eachother.
This begs the question.........WHY.......a lovely workshop, mate you're going to run out of time to enjoy the fruits of your labour 😊
As much as we have all missed this, there's only so much this man can do to share it all with us! Two homesteads and starting a cattle farm at his sisters....oh, and RUclips video\editing in between! You are amazing! What I wouldn't do for a fraction of your strength and energy....I just don't have mentally. Thank you for all you do and for sharing so much with us!🤟Saline, Michigan🙏💞
Wonderful to see you and Callie again! You certainly are one very busy man! Take good care of yourself, please😊
Don’t ever change (please) the beginning music of your video’s. It’s you 👍
I only tried the AG1 because of you, it’s been a couple months now and with turning 60 in July.. it’s a part of my morning ritual. I take your word to heart and this is the best thing I’ve done for myself.
Thank you
Thank you Shawn ! I have been busy myself and learning as much as I can by watching videos! Sooooooo
Grateful for your channel!
God bless dear Shawn!
🧚🏼♂️🧚🏼♂️🧚🏼♂️❤️
You have a life outside of these videos that actually creates the content for these videos. No matter what channel you're working on its still quality content. As a viewer it wouldn't make any more sense for me to tell you how to live than you telling me how to live, content or not. I appreciate all you do and I'm learning in the process. These next chapters will be more of the same just a different named channel.
very very good thank you my friend...
Lo sigo desde el primer día y ya son unos cuantos años y espero que sean muchos más
Muchísimas gracias por todos y cada uno de ellos
Un saludo desde España.
I always liked the workshop and always glad to see the building videos.
I find it radical the work you are able to do and achieve. Your skills are next level imo.
Always interesting. Amazing energy and stamina. 👍🏻
Hi Shawn, I just wanted to say hello after following you now for at least three years. I must admit, I do look forward to your weekly upload every Friday. Life is a constant state of change, so I do understand that you are branching out so to speak, but I do miss the "old" My Self Reliance. I loved, loved watching you build your homestead. You often say that you are not an expert carpenter or tradesman, however, in my personal, humble opinion, you do have excellent skills. I think you do a fantastic job, and all of your work is aesthetically pleasing. I watch a number of "outdoorsman/bushcraft" content and I find that I am often comparing what other people do to what you do. I know you are an incredibly busy man, however, I do hope that you continue to record "construction content" for the lack of a better term on My Self Reliance. Personally, that is what I enjoy most of all.
Hello Sir.I am your silent viewer specially during pandemic.Loved to see your crafts and techniques in doing all your projects.❤
Great video shawn loved watching your craftmanship!
It’s gonna be great!
First of all, i do not comment this with any bad intentions or with intentions of telling you what to do. Just want to make that very clear.
But i hear " patreon" and although i fully understand that it's needed to pay for everything, please don't forget where you come from. Most of us got here because of the nice, silent working video's with occasionally some talking bits and the ever so pleasant to see Cali enjoying the outdoor life she has.
Reason for saying this is that a lot of youtubers tend to forget that they are getting the views and likes because of how they started and because people who been watching their video's for a long time once they start with this patreon stuff. Less uploads on the channels that got them known to the audience, less quality content on the " free " channels etc. It's the downfall of many youtube channels once they start working with getting an extra buck out of their video's.
Like i said, i absolutely understand that all of this costs money and also understand that youtube alone isn't going to cut it but please just keep in mind that those who watch this channel probably where there when it all started.
These you tubers live off their video income and now they start with the patreon crap. Give me a break. Your not working, your doing whatever you enjoy and getting paid by views. Pretty comfy I would say.
This is the only channel I watch!!
For sure
@@kevinjo2041Your mother didn't teach you any thing about manners, did she? Your comment is out of line. Does it look like he's going to Fay Spa's and drinking cold beer? You've probably never had a blister on your hands from working all day and sweating buckets while you do it.
@@kevinjo2041Sir, a short time ago Canada came out w/some horrid new law about what social media they would allow shown to their citizens. They gave you tube "what for" about their expectations of "social culture". You tube refused to cooperate. I really dont know what this all means, but Shawn's been opening other venues, got a VPN, patreon, and I dont know what else, even a sponsor. I think it all has to do with that stupid law. I think he's been pressed on all sides and is really doing the very best he can for his family, and toward us.
You're a pioneer in off grid videos! Love watching you do different projects!
I really enjoy watching you build, upgrade and beautify your homestead. That’s what interests me. I will stay right here and enjoy what you are able to give in terms of that sort of content. No worries at all.
Your faithful viewers have never minced words, and today was no different! I love this channel the most, as do many, and look forward to the Friday videos. As someone said, ‘Don’t forget the about the girl you brought to the dance.’😇proud of myself for knowing you were putting up a new wall. Stay safe, sweet blessings as you go🕊
@Cabbieghost
Nice to see you back!
This is the only one of your channels I watch uz I just LOVE watching you build...Hell, i could even watch a whole video of you just milling..Dont forget us "OGs" ;-)
Busy, busy, busy. Great work. Pleasure to follow along. I'm building a homestead with anticipation of retirement. Im a weekend warrior trying to get things buttoned up. Trying to get all my infrastructure up and going before I disappear into the bush. I have only so much time I can devote to it each year. Lots of travelling all while stuck in the rat race. So for the time being I will live vicariously through you. Cheers Shawn and family
Always instructive watching you build things! Staying busy just following all three channels and Patreon! Can’t seem to get enough.
Be impossable to forget a true one of a
Kind. Been through many voyages with one so young and happy to share your stories. Thanks you.
Snow will be here before you know it and a warm workshop will be great place to work.
Busy busy busy as a bee 🐝 I have been trying to keep up with all the channels it has been educational, Thanks !
Благодарю вас за видео.
Great job using those jacks. It made for some interesting work. Thanks for the video.
I prefer this channel. Been watching it for years. Truely love it. Less talking. OSR is too boring and too much talking.
Looking forward to seeing what you are going to be doing on the Workshop area. Thank you for sharing your awesome content, all the best to you and your family . Cheers from Simcoe County Ontario Canada!🍁🍁
Already been here in this channel with a 100k plus subs. i'm happy that this channel is getting more subs. Stay healthy Mr. Shawn🙂
Been a long time for me to see what you doing. Cali, you getting old, but nice to see you fat and flourishing. Thank you for sharing Shawn.
Wow, I remember you telling us when you built the workshop that those squared-off logs you used for it were a lot heavier than the ones you used for your earlier cabin builds; and now you're lifting up the whole workshop you built from those extra-heavy logs all at once?!
Having the right lifting tools really makes an enormous difference!
Well, when he built with them originally, they probably still had some moisture content. They are a lot drier now. That means less weight. However, it is still a humongous undertaking!
Building the new cabin was a huge undertaking, as well. Those tremendous logs were between 12 and 18 inches in diameter, not to mention at least twice as long in length! That was flat amazing to do with such simple building techniques!
Me encanta todo lo que hace, su resiliencia para crear esas maravillas y vivir en esas tierras que solo transmiten paz, seguiré siempre disfrutando de ver como hace sus bellas obras, como las casas, el gallinero, viveros,
etc. ❤❤😮😮❤😊😊
Cheers from Toronto, I will be getting up that way to enjoy the fall colours
I Love everything about it, Ive watching U for awhile, this is great, Thanx
Vc e esse homem com liberdade... criativo... Deus abencoe seu trabslho!!!. Fico alegre em compartilhar!...
Hello , Cali I love to see 😍 you again , thank you Shawn for sharing these videos ! Hello for Tennessee!
At 77….. I have been busy canning for a year of tomato products, whole tomatoes, tomato sauce are done, next salsa and spaghetti sauce. This way I control what is in the final product. Yowsers on lifting up the shop!
It's great that you're back.
4 years, I too have been lifting buildings. Thank you for showing me how the camera sees it
Kinda interesting to watch this one. Hubby has moved a few buildings over the years. I always cringe over that stuff. Inlarging the shop. I can see the need for that. I've added the our self reliance to my watch list. I missed knowing of that one. Glad you guys enjoyed the trips.
I don't really know how long its been since I first started following you except you were building your first cabin on this site. But its been fun, entertaining and educational watching all your efforts and I look forward to following you across all your channels to follow along on your next adventure. I do seem to think I remember you saying you were done raising chickens...
I watch you in all three, I knew.
Keep up the good work but also enjoy some time off, that is only fair.👍
God bless
enjoyed watching the rebuild. thanks for all your hard work keeping up all the videos, love to Cali
I enjoy your channel very much. Please keep up the good work. Great project.
Keep on with your mission. You are a continued inspiration. Enjoy the rest of Summer.
Awesome!👍😎🇨🇦🐾🔨📐
Thanks for filming Shawn. 😁👍🏼
LOVE watchin you do all those things manually like you do. Amazing want a man can do, when he really wants to. Can't believe the HOA hasn't fussed about the noise. LOL Thanks Shawn, I really appreciate all th work you put into bringing us the excellent videos you do on your work.
This is the only channel where the fourth wall can be broken both literally and figuratively in the same video 😂you gotta love it! 20:19 For a second there I thought the workshop had yelped in pain LOL. Thanks for the video Shawn, have a good weekend!
Ohhh! Caly is Beautiful girl! I'm love this Princess CALY!
Well done oh my you really are going to be busy, I envy you being out doors and loving what you do, just be careful doing heavy jobs on your own ❤❤
Please continue regularly with "My Self Reliance" I look forward to each video and with winter coming it is time to finish up all those chores!
At 15:57 before plywood I would recommend put moisture barrier - plastic or roof paper. Nice work. Hard work.
I enjoy all of your channels Shaun !
Muito Bom! Parabéns e obrigado!
I always enjoyed watching this channel, always got me interested in out video's such as camping and bushcrafting but its like both worlds are dying
Great video I was the first one to view lol pulled it up after 23 second upload that is a first for me Shawn . Been following for 4 years. Love all the channels. Have a great week
Always enjoy your process! Makes me feel young again
NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN. LOVE YOU DOING A NEW ADDITION TO THE WORKSHOP, IT WILL HOUSE MORE PROJECTS AND TOOLS. TIME MARCHES ON AND AT LEAST YOU GOT TO SEE AND EXPERIENCE MORE OF CANADA AND THE STATES. SOMETHING MOST DON'T GET TO DO . NICE JOB OF EXPLAINING AND WE ARE WITH YOU. WELL THANKS AND STAY SAFE 🙏 ❤❤
It's so great seeing cabin videos again! Thank you, Shawn!
I'm just amazed how you do what you do. One man show 🙌
With all the newer stuff to do -Our Self Reliance, doesn't look like you'll get the bedroom addition or the sauna/bathhouse built this year. Glad you and the wife had a good vacation. You need the break every so often. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.
