    Its funny how the industry says High Fructose Corn Syrup is safe in moderation. Yet how can people eat it moderately IF ITS IN EVERYTHING!! Whenever I'm at the grocery store I always make sure that whatever I get doesn't have HFCS, even if its means spending a little more.. I refuse to eat or drink anything with this crap.
    Here is a fun little project for everyone, drink something with high fructose corn syrup and try to do something that requires you to concentrate and remember things. Also tell me if HFCS gives you a minor headache!

      I just tried it and it has no side effect. I tried the first few questions in the bar exam drinking 2 small cokes with fries and I was fine, but it may be different with other people. But pretty much every thing we eat is genetically modified or not fully natural.

      Jeter Sison Yeah I guess everyone is different. For some weird reason i get a headache if i drink too much of anything with hfcs and I get a little forgetful. Only very few of my friends have similar effects.

      Exactly! Especially everything marketed to kids. Not surprising considering one of its effects: it shuts down your appetite control center. If you want to sell a LOT of shit to kids that's your ticket..... The other effect of hfcs is that it can cause cirrhosis of the liver.....I read every label and never, ever touch this poison!

    • @howardman3926
      @howardman3926 7 лет назад +10

      Never touch any food or carbohydrate again then. High Fructose Corn Syrup is basically the exact same thing as sugar. In fact we humans and most animals can't even taste the difference, plus it has no other side effects. If you do feel a stomach ache it would be due to the Placebo Effect, and not the High Fructose Corn Syrup.

I can't believe I put loads of that crap into my body day after day for years. If I want something sweet i'll choose healthier options, preferably drinks that hydrate well. Oh, not to mention just from the sip that I took I could tell how bad it is for your teeth(I know, common sense.) But when you drink it day after day you don't really think about that too much because it's so much of a normal routine.

      When I talk about 'diet' I don't mean those fad diets people obsess over. People can eat french fries and be healthy. But you can't eat nothing but Big Macs and be healthy. Diet is literally just the word for what you eat. The entire concept of weight is calories in/calories out. If you eat more than you burn you're going to gain weight, and the opposite is also true. Exercise is important but it's mostly just so you can burn off whatever you put in your body.

    Calling standard table sugar a mixture of glucose and sucrose is like calling water a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.
    Glucose and fructose are both C6H12O6. The difference is that the molecules are put together somewhat differently.
    Table sugar (both cane and beet) is made of sucrose, which is C12H22O11. Structurally, it is essentially a glucose molecule stuck to a fructose molecule, but with a few missing atoms.

    Ya'll should make a video on hydrogenated oil and why it's so bad for us. A doctor who specializes in taking old people off unnecessary medications (medications to treat side effects of other medications until they're on 20 pills a day sort of people) told me that I shouldn't eat anything with hydrogenated oil in it and now I avoid it more than I avoid high fructose corn syrup and agave nectar (which she also told me to avoid while I was at it, since it's relatively easy to avoid while still eating everything I like).

    The reason why you guys in the States end up having so much HFCS in everything over sugar is due to the taxation of imported sugar in the late 70s, and the subsidisation of domestic corn crops. Therefore it's a far cheaper sweetener to use in food/drink manufacture in the US, and most companies that used to use sugar moved over to HFCS in the 80s.
    (There's a popular conspiracy theory that claims the whole "New Coke" debacle was Coca Cola's attempt to swap the ingredients without people making a fuss. Yeah. That worked well if that's true then.)
    Over here in the UK we still get our Coke and Pepsi flavoured with good old sugar, then again, we also get some kind of green liquid that is Mountain Dew in name only (totally different ingredients), meaning if I want the real deal I have to get imported US cans, preferably throwback, or ones from an Asian food store (made in Dubai, same ingredients as US dew, but with sugar, so essentially the same as throwback)

      There is a side benefit, though - HFCS is sweeter than straight sucrose for the same mass, so the resulting finished product has fewer calories. The flip side is that corn syrup does have a slightly different, slightly caramelly mouthfeel, and I think most people do prefer the taste and mouthfeel of straight-up sucrose.

    The thing about fructose is it has to be used fast. It's ideal to use it immediately before, during, or immediately after intense exercise. Then you can actually benefit from it.
    I think the problem with fructose and obesity isn't entirely an issue with the fructose it self, but rather people aren't physically active enough.

    • @FirstLast-fx3mf
      @FirstLast-fx3mf 6 лет назад

      Miles Wright
      No man like High fructose corn syrup stores fat in your liver overall slows down your metabolism. Just because you are moderately physically active doesn't resolve the issue. To burn that fat in the liver that you consume from high fructose you basically have to be athletic which in today’s society is impossible to do because let's face the fact we are all mostly living a sanitary life style.
      High fructose corn syrup is bad though. It developes a disease Non Alcoholic fatty liver disease which is literally the same disease as drunk person has after abusing alcohol literally. I had that disease and let me tell you when I stop consuming High fructose corn syrup and ate vegetables and exercise hard core, it literally went away after that.
      I mean you seriously can have sanitary life style and be skinny but you have to eat healthy and high fructose corn syrup is the exact opposite of healthy.I mean after I stop consuming High fructose corn syrup I literally lost 70 pounds and all those years when I fat I was wondering why didn't lose weight when I literally did the same excersize as other skinny people. But now I am skinny and I live a sanitary life now but I stop eating high fructose corn syrup and I am still skinny up to this day.
      I don't know about you but that proves it at all. Saying high fructose corn syrups is not bad is like saying saturated fat isn't bad because sure it isn't bad if you actually burn and use that fat and that is true for athletes.

    I am yet to see a video or an article talking about the dangers of fructose mention the benefits it has over glucose.
    The fact that it isn't a ready-to-use source of energy that gets injected directly into your bloodstream means its glycemic index is 5 times lower than that of glucose. Besides, it's sweeter so you need to use less when preparing food.

  • @TheronSax
    @TheronSax 10 лет назад +2

    Look up the GI Index. This index ranks carbohydrates/sugars on how quickly your body converts these into glucose (the form of sugar your body uses). Quickly absorbed carbohydrates will be more likely to be converted to fat because your body will be getting a large amount of glucose in a short period of time. Your body can only use or store so much glucose, so the rest is converted to fat for later use. Eating more complex (low GI) carbohydrates and less simple (high GI) carbohydrates "IS THE KEY" to losing body fat. FYI-Fiber has a ranking of 0 because it is indigestible and Glucose is ranked a 100 because it requires no digestion just absorption.

    • @DiablosAguacate
      @DiablosAguacate 10 лет назад

      The key to having a healthy body composition is calories in vs. calories out. Low GI carbohydrates digest much slower, thus causing you to feel more satiated. You will be taking in large amounts of glucose in a short period of time because of the lack of willpower. If you have nothing but Count Chocula that day, and it fits your caloric maintenance, you won't gain a single ounce of fat.

    • @TheronSax
      @TheronSax 10 лет назад

      ***** There are secondary effects on metabolism that you are not considering. The rate at which your body uses calories is affected by the type of food eaten and how these calories are consumed throughout the day. For example, if your daily caloric requirement is 2000 calories and you consume 2000 calories in one large meal of Count Chocula you will still gain weight. How is this possible? Your metabolic rate will slow down if you eat like this and your daily caloric intake will no longer be 2000 calories but say 1850. It is still technically calories in vs calories out but the amount of calories you can consume without gaining weight decreases the more unhealthily you eat.

    Your body won't turn fructose or any other carbohydrate into fat when you eat "a lot" of it as you say. The carbohydrates that are not used instantly by your body will get stored as glycogen in the muscle and liver and not as body fat, except if you're in a caloric surplus and your glycogen stores are full. Besides that, it's impossible to add fat when your not in a caloric surplus. Thumps down for this video.

      AWinterDemise Fructose, as well as all other carbohydrates will get transformed into glucose in your body. Even when you eat more protein than your body needs it will be converted to glucose so it can be used as energy. Your argument is invalid.

    DNews Glucose is not the by-product photosynthesis, it is the main (desired) product with oxygen and water as the by-products.
    Also please stop using the word natural in this sense. It is very unhelpful. Fructose the same the same molecule no matter how you make it.
    Finally, what evidence is there that fructose is really worse than glucose and works in the way you describe (causes fat gain faster)? The only evidence I could see looks rather weak and the mode of action is based on speculation. Please show me a reference if I am wrong the but the UC Davis study does not go far enough. To me, whether it is glucose or fructose, the same amount of calories will lead to the same amount of weight again and I need more convincing to the contrary if I am going to believe what you said (think about the first law of thermodynamics).
    I found this to be very poor reporting, please improve.

      "Fructose the same the same molecule no matter how you make it."
      False. Sugars and proteins have be flipped in space. This is called handedness or chirality. Nature only produces right-handed sugars and our bodies can only use right-handed sugars properly.
      Making sugars (or proteins, or artificially via chemically process can produce a product that is a 50/50 split of left-handed sugars (bad) vs right-handed sugars (normal). This is not natural.

    Why dont we use glucose more instead of fructose. since glucose actually tells your body when to stop consuming it?

  • @alphacause
    @alphacause 10 лет назад +1

    If you compare the fructose composition of sucrose, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), or agave, there is no one product that is "better" than the other. They are ALL BAD. To say sucrose is better than HFCS or agave, because it has less fructose, is like saying being shot by a single round of a pistol is "better" than being by shot multiple rounds from a machine gun. The point is you should not have to make choice between a bad scenario, and something slightly worse, and then conclude that the bad scenario is therefore good by comparison. The reason why HFCS has been more demonized than sucrose or agave is because it is far cheaper to manufacture than sucrose or agave. Thus HFCS makes much of the supersized portions and processed foods cost less. The truth is regardless of the percentage of fructose, it should be avoided. One can, and should eat whole fruit, but almost any nutrient you can get from even whole fruit, you can get a greater abundance of that same nutrient from eating low sugar vegetables instead. So when choosing between sugary fruits or vegetables to obtain nutrients, favor vegetables. Finally, while it is technically true , as Trace stated, that glucose is generally safe, this is not the case if the individual is insulin resistant. Once an individual becomes insulin resistant, even glucose, such as what you find in wheat, rice, potatoes, tapioca, etc can be deleterious. Insulin resistance is the driver behind rise of obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, and possibly some cancers. The problem is that because the American diet is so high in fructose, more and more people are becoming insulin resistant, and therefore should limit their consumption of starches as well.

    I OBJECT!
    Saying table sugar is 50-50 glucose fructose isnt entirely accurate, sure it is technically true, but the glucose fructose molecules are arranged as disaccharides, which means table sugar exists as 100% SUCROSE. While yes Sucrose is metabolized into fructose and glucose once it enters the body, I have yet to see specific research into the possible biological processes triggered by that metabolic conversion. I demand studies comparing rats fed with sucrose against rats fed with equal amount of a 50- 50 fructose glucose blend to analyze any special effects sucrose as a disacharride has on the body

    • @KillerDramon
      @KillerDramon 10 лет назад

      a sucrose molecule is the result of one glucose and one fructose molecule 1:1 ratio, and because they have the same molar mass, you can safely say 50-50.

    Sugar is bad, if I eat too much sweets biscuits, chips and carbs my skin gets an eczema type red rash on my face. If I eat healthy and not too much stuff like lollies or white carbs its normal, I think eczema is an early symptom of diabetes, why is the sugar doing that, how does too much sugar cause a rash? I feel like I'm causing some sort of damage with the high blood sugar levels and my body can't reduce it well with insulin. If I cut out too much sugary foods for like a week I can tolerate more sugar, like my body has healed, the sugar levels have dropped so I can tolerate more cause there is less in blood stream.

    If you do something on fructose you should mention fructose intolerance ... I have been diagnosed with fructose (and lactose) intolerance after going through a series of hydrogen breath tests and, although we know what causes lactose intolerance (absence of a genetic mutation), it seems that nobody really knows the cause of fructose intolerance! The consequences can affect the stomach (acidity, GORD, gastritis), gut and bowel and the liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) hence anything between annoying to potentially life threatening.

    Anything that has calories converts to sugar once it's consumed. If it didn't we would die. Diabetics are people whose cells are not responding to the sugar or can't produce it. That can get to be a huge problem if it's bad enough. Meat just takes longer to convert than a soft drink does. The problem with too many sweets is it's a poor nutrition source for vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. Your body doesn't know if you ate a potato or drank a soft drink. The cells see the same thing in both instances, sugar. What they fail to see drinking the soft drink is vitamins and minerals. There is a little but not enough to justify all the calories. HFCS won't kill you as fast as texting while driving.

    Which is worse, a fire in your kitchen burning your house down or a fire in your bathroom burning your house down?
    A little fire might not burn down your entire house but 'too much' fire will burn your house down no matter where or how it starts.
    There is no such thing as 'healthy sugar' or a 'healthy amount' of sugar you should eat. The ideal amount of processed sugar is none, because you'll get plenty from natural sources like fruit. The best you can do nowadays is just limit your intake to 'just a little' to limit the damage because it's in most things you can buy off the shelf at the store. If you haven't ever turned that package around and looked at the nutrition facts on the back where it reports the sugar content, I think you'll be surprised what has added sugar in it. Many things that have no business being sweet have sugar added. Because of the effect it has on the brain (which basically makes it ignore the fact that you're full), it is beneficial to put sugar in a product so the customer will eat more of it, even if the product itself shouldn't taste sweet.

  • @RedJericho45

    High fructose corn syrup is worse because of unjustified import quotas on sugar that raise the price on foreign sugar by restricting supply. This makes high fructose corn syrup a cheaper alternative to use which raises the demand for corn ultimately leading to increased prices. The only ones who benefit from this system are corn farmers and only slightly. Free trade FTW.
