@@panzerkampfwagenvitigeri2080 technically the first part of the armor if it gets penned, the shell will be tilted inside the empty space and end up stuck in there not going throught the turret, that's what i understood from a documentary about that tank! very genius but also has weaknesses, coz they made the empty space between the outer armor and the turret longer than the shell , and if there is a more modern shell longer than that space, then that armor will be useless in most cases coz the shell will be long enough to get to the turret before it gets tilted in the empty space between the armor and the turret, well just search up how it's armor works! sry for not explaining it right!
And to think: The Leopard 2A6 gets even more armour, specifically an add on piece of armour on the lower plate, to protect the tank from explosions that occur underneath the tank. I don't know how far War Thunder wants to go, but if they add the 2A6, that will be some good times.

This is just testserver, leo armor is not finished yet. In real life leo has 850 mm tower armor and ~650 hull. I do not know how gaijins will balance it, but Im sure that armor will be not so powerfull.
@@j.b.4835, Actually that is the minimum for the turret because that was leopard 2 improved armor. Realistically it should be around 1,000 to 1,100 base. What people don't realize is that even though it is 800 vs KE there is a good chance it could stop 1000 mm penetrator.

Even Polish Army (owns 2A5) claimed it to be impenetrable from the front to any ammunition they have in their storages at point blank (DM33 Improved, more than 550 vs KE) and claimed it to have more than 700 mm vs KE. But i mean, it's a game so.

That would be balanced. But you know what i could accept B-tech hull with more resistant wedges.
Leo 2A5 is an extremly upgraded Leo 2A4 while the americans still use the same tank with the same weakspots and only puts a tiny amount of armor on it wich is useless

So basically the a7+ has a shorter barrel,which makes him weaker, but he has a shorter barrel because it was made for urban fights. A shorter barrel is better for fights between houses for example. But the main changes were many technical improvements like a new thermal visor and a better air conditioner for the fight in hotter areas like Syria or Afghanistan. I know, that the shorter barrel is a big difference between the a7+ and the a5, but the biggest changes are only some technical improvements. The a7+ also has a better protection against mines, but this is not necessery for War Thunder. So in conclusion, the a7+ has a weaker cannon (This is bad for War Thunder :D), a better protection against mines, which is not necessary for war thunder, and newer technical devices, which can be necesarry for war thunder (reconnaissance for example). So in general the a7+ is bassicaly the a5 with better technologies.

I never had a problem with killing the M1 even when it was added.. I already knew where to aim. But this thing seams to not have a weak spot in front. But yeah I guess not using APFSDS on it will have to do
Actually, it's hollow. The idea is that it acts as spaced armor for HEAT, and destabilizes APFSDS. When APFSDS strikes the outer wall of the wedge, it causes it to tilt up or down. It then strikes the thick turret cheeks at an angle, which reduces its effectiveness. Pretty good idea as long as there are no APFSDS rounds longer than the added armor.

Pretty much everyone seems to have this in his recommendation. Before the dude from the tank museum in Munster made a video about it, almost noone heard about it. From my understanding angles on the leopards front turret aren't there to bounce like traditional angled armor. They are there to destabilize penetrators as they go through it.
The abrams we have including the soon m1a1 They were basically extensive prototypes if what we have now The difference between the m1/m1a1 and the m1a2 is as follows Stable (unlike the Leo 2a5) 1500mm vs HEAT 800+mm vs KE Front turret and 3/4the amount on the side turret faces Improved turret ring composition making it slightly double of the m1 effectiveness Composite side skirts are now 127mm opposed to currently 65mm-70m Lower glacis like turret now have geometrically formed DU layers So roughly the front of the m1a2 is 1000mm/~700mm ~850mm/~580mm and 35mm-50mm rear Not invincible just reliable not to mention in real life they have space armored cages and other upgrades after $95 billion spent So I'd say the abrams in game currently is just a US sample of the main product
Keep in mind that the effective thickness of the armor varies with the type of penetrator you're using. When I tested APFSDS against the original Abrams, longer penetrators decreased the effective thickness of the armor, even if they had lower penetration than other, shorter ones.

Hey phly about the things on the Leos cheeks, they arent for bouncing stuff and in reality that triangle is actually full of empty air, its to break up incoming Sabot darts, when it punches through the dart gets unbalanced and strikes the actual cheek at a poor angle, making it shatter rather than penetrate the tank. Its very neat.
There is no known penetrator currently on any tank that can penetrate the turret front of a Leopard 2A5 onwards unless someone makes a longer penetrator, because the way it works is that as long as the penetrator fits inside those frontal add-on armor wedges, it just gets diverted too much to penetrate the composite behind.
Nah they should just add a different tank, add the 2a4C. The M1A1 is barely better than the M1, just a better gun really, even has worse HEAT protection, but there’s a M1a1HC that has the DU armor. This is something that would go against the M1A2 or something, not the M1a1.
This is currently inaccurate, although a M1A1HA probably would make it a bit more balanced even w/ the real values, but then that may warrant some kind of T-90 for Russia

I feel like that's a fallacy. A modern mbt cannot have 1000mm of kinetic protection around the breach area. Also the turret face armour of a leopard 2a5/6? If I had to guess would be around 800mm, with the added cheese slopes maybe abit over 1000mm. The new Russian t14 armata has 1000mm of straight up composite armour (supposedly) and that has western governments scrambling to design new tanks and has them rattled. It's a big deal cause no other mbt has had that much protection before. Kf51 with the 130mm gun is a direct counter. I'll admit the leopard do feel abit spongey now but honestly the weak spots on Russian tanks in game are pretty easy to hit, provided you're not sniping at 2kms away.

I can say this is kind realistic. I am a tank crew member at spanish army. Our Leopard 2E are 2A6 with improved protection requirements. Add some modules to the hull, increase some internal protection and there u have. Its a fucking moster, but in real world they are less reliable that those in game

The DM 53 can only be shoot from the L55 Gun. The L44 isn't rated for these high Chamber pressures. But old ammunition from the L44 can still be used with the longer L55. So we will have to wait for the 2A6 till we get our hands on the L55 and the DM53 with 800mm pen.
Not really. L44 can shoot DM53 or even DM63. It need chamber and breach modifications but will successfully shoot DM53 and DM63. Of course longer barrel still means higher velocity. So even modified L44 shooting DM63 will be less powerful than L55.
DM53 can be used on L44 gun, it's confirmed by Rheinmetall. DM63 can be used on both L44 and L55, but L44 would need to be upgraded expect for the barrel lenght.

In theory you could shoot a DM 53/63 (Basicly the same projectile, only different propellant) from a L44 Gun but the chamber pressure would most likely result in damage to the Gun aber a few shots.

Put simply, this was the winner tank design for world war III. Designed specifically not only to massacre the best MBTs of the Warsaw pact, but to massacre them when heavily outnumbered by them. If a single one had to fight with 5 or even 10 T-64s or T-72s it was surely expected to take some direct hits and survive. Leo's beauty is that it seems to absolutely nail the tank triangle. It had massive firepower with excellent fire control, it was armoured like a fortress, and still - had one of the fastest chassis in the tank world. It really looks like the age old tank triangle of compromise between firepower, mobility and protection did not apply for Leo.
The reason the front turret has such a massive armor value in the front is because of the angled speartip. This thing is filled with absolutely nothing. Its use is to trap and destabilize kinetic penetrators. Because of its size and angle, any shot that enters it gets angled and looses its penetration
The arrowhead is empty it's just spaced armour, the trick is the distance between the turret face and peak of the arrowhead is larger than most sabots that hits it thus the shot passes through the arrowhead and tumbles on the inside and hits the turret face at an angle causing the shot to shatter on impact. but a sabot long enough to pierce the arrowhead plate and meet the turret face before it exits the arrowhead will punch through the armour. It's about having the longest sabot

This is just testserver, leo armor is not finished yet. In real life leo has 850 mm tower armor and ~650 hull. I do not know how gaijins will balance it, but Im sure that armor will be not so powerfull.
@@j.b.4835, Actually that is the minimum for the turret because that was leopard 2 improved armor. Realistically it should be around 1,000 to 1,100 base. What people don't realize is that even though it is 800 vs KE there is a good chance it could stop 1000 mm penetrator.

Even Polish Army (owns 2A5) claimed it to be impenetrable from the front to any ammunition they have in their storages at point blank (DM33 Improved, more than 550 vs KE) and claimed it to have more than 700 mm vs KE.

So basically the a7+ has a shorter barrel,which makes him weaker, but he has a shorter barrel because it was made for urban fights. A shorter barrel is better for fights between houses for example. But the main changes were many technical improvements like a new thermal visor and a better air conditioner for the fight in hotter areas like Syria or Afghanistan. I know, that the shorter barrel is a big difference between the a7+ and the a5, but the biggest changes are only some technical improvements. The a7+ also has a better protection against mines, but this is not necessery for War Thunder.
So in conclusion, the a7+ has a weaker cannon (This is bad for War Thunder :D), a better protection against mines, which is not necessary for war thunder, and newer technical devices, which can be necesarry for war thunder (reconnaissance for example). So in general the a7+ is bassicaly the a5 with better technologies.

Actually, it's hollow. The idea is that it acts as spaced armor for HEAT, and destabilizes APFSDS. When APFSDS strikes the outer wall of the wedge, it causes it to tilt up or down. It then strikes the thick turret cheeks at an angle, which reduces its effectiveness. Pretty good idea as long as there are no APFSDS rounds longer than the added armor.

Stable (unlike the Leo 2a5) 1500mm vs HEAT
800+mm vs KE
Front turret and 3/4the amount on the side turret faces
Improved turret ring composition making it slightly double of the m1 effectiveness
Composite side skirts are now 127mm opposed to currently 65mm-70m
Lower glacis like turret now have geometrically formed DU layers
So roughly the front of the m1a2 is 1000mm/~700mm
~850mm/~580mm and 35mm-50mm rear
Not invincible just reliable not to mention in real life they have space armored cages and other upgrades after $95 billion spent
So I'd say the abrams in game currently is just a US sample of the main product
Keep in mind that the effective thickness of the armor varies with the type of penetrator you're using. When I tested APFSDS against the original Abrams, longer penetrators decreased the effective thickness of the armor, even if they had lower penetration than other, shorter ones.
Phly, as I have mentioned before, we should try to get Gaijin to let us race/drive in game car models (such as the ones in the new "Alaska" map, and maybe even make more iconic cars of the era) for this upcoming April fools. Hey phly about the things on the Leos cheeks, they arent for bouncing stuff and in reality that triangle is actually full of empty air, its to break up incoming Sabot darts, when it punches through the dart gets unbalanced and strikes the actual cheek at a poor angle, making it shatter rather than penetrate the tank. Its very neat.

There is no known penetrator currently on any tank that can penetrate the turret front of a Leopard 2A5 onwards unless someone makes a longer penetrator, because the way it works is that as long as the penetrator fits inside those frontal add-on armor wedges, it just gets diverted too much to penetrate the composite behind.
You know what I hope they don’t nerf this. Just give the Abrams it’s DU armor and we’re good to go.
Nah they should just add a different tank, add the 2a4C. The M1A1 is barely better than the M1, just a better gun really, even has worse HEAT protection, but there’s a M1a1HC that has the DU armor.

The new Russian t14 armata has 1000mm of straight up composite armour (supposedly) and that has western governments scrambling to design new tanks and has them rattled. It's a big deal cause no other mbt has had that much protection before.

I'll admit the leopard do feel abit spongey now but honestly the weak spots on Russian tanks in game are pretty easy to hit, provided you're not sniping at 2kms away.

I can say this is kind realistic. I am a tank crew member at spanish army. Our Leopard 2E are 2A6 with improved protection requirements. Add some modules to the hull, increase some internal protection and there u have. Its a fucking moster, but in real world they are less reliable that those in game

The DM 53 can only be shoot from the L55 Gun. The L44 isn't rated for these high Chamber pressures. But old ammunition from the L44 can still be used with the longer L55. So we will have to wait for the 2A6 till we get our hands on the L55 and the DM53 with 800mm pen.
Not really. L44 can shoot DM53 or even DM63. It need chamber and breach modifications but will successfully shoot DM53 and DM63. Of course longer barrel still means higher velocity. So even modified L44 shooting DM63 will be less powerful than L55.
DM53 can be used on L44 gun, it's confirmed by Rheinmetall. DM63 can be used on both L44 and L55, but L44 would need to be upgraded expect for the barrel lenght.

In theory you could shoot a DM 53/63 (Basicly the same projectile, only different propellant) from a L44 Gun but the chamber pressure would most likely result in damage to the Gun aber a few shots.

Put simply, this was the winner tank design for world war III. Designed specifically not only to massacre the best MBTs of the Warsaw pact, but to massacre them when heavily outnumbered by them. If a single one had to fight with 5 or even 10 T-64s or T-72s it was surely expected to take some direct hits and survive. Leo's beauty is that it seems to absolutely nail the tank triangle. It had massive firepower with excellent fire control, it was armoured like a fortress, and still - had one of the fastest chassis in the tank world. It really looks like the age old tank triangle of compromise between firepower, mobility and protection did not apply for Leo.

The reason the front turret has such a massive armor value in the front is because of the angled speartip. This thing is filled with absolutely nothing. Its use is to trap and destabilize kinetic penetrators. Because of its size and angle, any shot that enters it gets angled and looses its penetration

The arrowhead is empty it's just spaced armour, the trick is the distance between the turret face and peak of the arrowhead is larger than most sabots that hits it thus the shot passes through the arrowhead and tumbles on the inside and hits the turret face at an angle causing the shot to shatter on impact. but a sabot long enough to pierce the arrowhead plate and meet the turret face before it exits the arrowhead will punch through the armour.

The gun braking system was improved to prepare for the later mounting of the new L/55 gun tube and to enable firing of more powerful ammunition, such as the DM-53 APFSDS. The first A5s were handed over to the German army tank school in 1995 and started to enter regular service with Panzerbataillon 33 in December the same year.
