Featured in TIR Episode 195 (Part 2 of 2): Singer and composer Sueann Carwell! Since debuting as a teenager in 1981 after signing with Warner Brothers Records, she has released four albums under her own name and provided vocals for a cavalcade of other artists. They include the Brecker Brothers, George Duke, Brownmark, Bobby Brown, Celine Dion, Freddie Jackson, Shanice, Slapbak, Aaron Hall, Ricky Martin, George Benson, Ralph Tresvant, Rod Stewart, Sheena Easton, Jeff Lorber, Whitney Houston, Nancy Wilson, Lionel Richie, Britney Spears, Cher and Christine Aguilera.
In keeping with her Minneapolis roots, she brushed with being a Prince protégé and wound up collaborating extensively with Jesse Johnson. Here she dishes on the entire Minneapolis music scene as well as her successful singing brother Carl Carwell, George Clinton, P-Funk and funk music in general.

There she is... my beautiful sister friend from childhood. It was so good seeing you walk down memory lane. I still remember us singing in harmony "At your best, you are love" by the Isley's. You are still beautiful inside and out and I will always keep those good memories in my heart. God bless you Bookie 😍. I love you, Renee (Nay)💜

Coltrane?! I'm so proud of people who realize how phenomenal his recordings are even to this day!! They're superior to what's being made these days!! It's great to know others are aware of that.

She sings a little in this interview and I can tell she's really good. I'm going to do a search for some of her recordings. Also Jesse Johnson. Everyone keeps saying how good he is. I have to hear for myself. Thanks again, Scott for another great interview of these people connected to Prince. Very interesting!!

Thanks Scott for this interview with Sue Ann. I really appreciate your hard work and dedication to your audience bringing us the best in funk, jazz and r&b. I wondered what happened to her. I always thought she was a beast. I loved her album with MCA. Glad to know Sue Ann is still in the game in a big way. Still singing and producing and looking great. Looking forward to the next episode. I may not always leave a comment but I'm watching. Thanks for all you do 😊👍

Penny Ford was the voice on the 1990 hit "I Got The Power", she did some background work with George Clinton and She had a single release, a remake of Aretha's "Daydeamin",
Produced by Randy Jackson (American Idol)

KayBee, nobody wanted to touch someone signed to a label, guess who's making 90%, it was the 80's. They weren't dumb.

Such an overlooked artist and a beast of a vocalist. I've been listening to Sue Ann since the Blue Velvet Lp, before I knew about her first album. I'm always looking for more of her work as she greatly contributes to my music universe.

Not surprised Prince liked Patrice Rushen. Would've been great to hear a woman who could actually sing work with him. Understand why she didn't though, but I'm sure she regretted passing up her chance later on after he blew up. Gayle Chapman probably also wishes she stayed with him. Oh well. At least we know who they are.

I really wanted to listen to this through the end but too many "you know" repeated over and over again- I had to shut it off, sorry

I know exactly what you mean. It got to me too. It's really a bad habit for her. It's like she has no self awareness if she doesn't realize how often she says it and how it's gotta sound to anyone listening. I'm halfway through and am committed to see the rest because of everything ELSE she's saying. You know... lol

A little further in the video and it's getting worse. She just can't stop saying it!! I don't think I can take it much longer!! What's wrong with this woman?!

Ms. Carwell asked where she could buy the host's book, and he didn't offer to send her a copy for free. And she's probably spending her time doing this interview for free. That seems a little classless to me. I'll remember that. Because actions, or the lack thereof speak louder than words.

Patrice rushen was too big for her britches back in the day because she rejected Prince and called him broke and then felt STUPID when he made it and I bet that she got JEALOUS when he got a hold of Vanity because he wasn't missing nothing with her and she didn't have nothing on Vanity especially eye candy.....lol....
