    It's scary to consider - she was Cosette. The highest-sung part in all of Les Miserables, and then she goes and pulls a low G-flat with better resonance and placement than I've heard from many mezzos. Go Judy Kuhn!

    • @xxkewldudexx
      @xxkewldudexx 9 лет назад +8

      Amen! She may have the most perfect Broadway voice ever...pity I'm so stuck on it, seeing as I visualised the female lead in the play/hopefully musical I'm working on as a Judy Kuhn type (with more overall emphasis on the soprano than mezzo area of the voice, but still with quite a few dramatic low notes during the more Sturm-und-Drang-filled parts). Talk about aiming way too high *yikes face*.

      +Ethan A. And yes...I saw/heard her on the 1995 dream cast CD/DVD. *Wow.* Just...wow.

      You have a good point and this rendition is beautiful. But actually Cosette is not a hard role cause is a character that always sings in falsetto. Of course it will sound better in a natural soprano, but any woman with a good head voice training can play Cosette.

    • @Ihdc1
      @Ihdc1 6 лет назад +4

      David Matos Cosette goes up to soprano high C. A natural mezzo-soprano will be hard pressed to sing that unless you’re Cecilia Bartoli or Joyce DiDonato.

    Can we please talk about Judy Kuhn's range??? I mean, she played COSETTE in Les Mis, yet here she is singing this Mezzo song, with no audible struggle on the low notes. Now, THAT'S what I call talent!

    • @alematosmusic7498
      @alematosmusic7498 6 лет назад +5

      Ok, let me break all your deams, lol. She is awesome but she is a mezzosoprano, Cosette is actually an easy role that any woman can reach her notes with falsetto, even me being a boy I can hit most of Cosette notes. She has a wonderful voice and she can do whatever she wants. But definetely she is mezzosprano cause she can sing the ower notes without breaking her voice

      @@alematosmusic7498 There's a difference, however, between hitting the high notes and singing them with perfect placement and dynamics. The score calls for piano high B-flats and Cs - not an easy feat even for a high mezzo, and Judy delivered every time. She's like Julie Andrews - started singing regular soprano roles, then went down to the mezzo belter range as her voice aged. It's the musical theatre equivalent of the soprano assoluta voice in opera - capable of anything.

    I think she sings it the best. there are so much strong emotions in her voice, but she doesn't scream, she doesn't move too much, she's not trying to sing it "too good" like everyone else does. She just sings it simply. You can feel the hidden pain inside her, but she doesn't show it so much, so her emotions are subdued and that's what makes it so brilliant - It's so emotional, but you can feel it only in her voice and see it in her eyes, so the general performance is so peaceful.

    I saw her in both roles (she was my first Cosette and then years later caught her as Fantine). She was AMAZING in both roles. Her voice is so effortless-she makes it look easy (it's not-I'm a trained singer and she's got an especially large range). I'm also continuously impressed with her acting (she is an incredibly gifted actress, IMO-I've seen her Fosca, which was a brave and nuanced performance). She'll be back on Broadway in 2015-I urge all to see her. (She's incredible-as is the cast-of Fun Home!)

    I can't help it... I know this was before Pocahontas, but this song, and this voice, makes it pretty much impossible to not picture that movie. While I love Judy individually, and I adore Les Mis., this song could easily be Pocahontas singing about John Smith as he's leaving to go back to England.

    She is so brilliant. I wonder what Judy Kuhn is doing today. I thought she´d make a world career when i heard her the first time in the late 80´s. Bless her. André
