I've always thought helicopters take off straight vertically, but all these videos show a forward climb. Is that a limitation to theses machines or something?
Depends on the helicopter, not to mention the air density, how much weight you're hauling, etc. When you're learning to fly helicopters in an R22 for example, pretty much every takeoff is a forward climb going about 60 knots. It's big sister, the R44, can pull more power, making vertical takeoffs a lot easier. Once you move onto Jet Rangers and MD500's and stuff, you can usually take off however you want because they're monsters in comparison to small helicopters like these.
Not too mention most airports rules require you to do "Air Taxi" of your helio to an out going run way, instead of a straight up lift off. Makes for a more orderly and safe airport.
10,000ft+ ASL, estimated. Service or absolute ceiling is untested on the Mosquitos. The highest I have flown it is 6,500ft ASL/AGL in Florida. However, there is really no reason to fly that high in these helicopters. Most Mosquito pilots stay under 2,000ft AGL.
@@ThaiMac It's more what is wise to do... stay at about 1000ft and you have plenty buffer to autorotate etc.... don't hover above 20ft or below 500ft, safer that way don't hover where you can't see a way out, such as above trees with no nearby fields. Don't be a pilot error statistic!
Every year seems to be sunny for the fly-in. Awesome.
Jesse,
Thanks for the post!

Hot damn! 👍 That was awesome! Bucket list 📃... 😜
Any thoughts on how this compares to the helicycle?
Hey very nice video! How much can you flee with it?
Barnstormer ad missing. Still available?

Thanks for the insight!
There are also plenty of videos of these Mosquitos doing vertical takeoffs. They are actually quite common for them.

Look up transient lift to understand why many heli's take off like airplanes whether they need to or not.

Velatorix - Is there a minimum height required if you're wanting to fly from and to any destinations?
Nah, helicopters get to have all the fun. Just stay safe and don't put any people or property below you at risk. Always plan for an engine failure.
