That's a cool idea. Another thing I would recommend to people is to never throw away an old hang on back filter if it at least functions. Once in awhile I will buy a better or newer hang on back filter for a tank and I always clean and put the old filter away to use in an emergency. Occasionally, much like you are using this bottle, I will use a second hang on back filter in a tank for a few days to help remove any additional particulates that may be clouding the water. As far as DIY filters go that's about the best, most easily built one so it's always good to see it employed to clear the water.

I normally use 50 micron sheeting, far better at filtration and polishing
