It is a revelation, watching a real mechanic diagnosed the problem, unlike our local mechanics, who just throw parts at the problem, hoping to fix it by accident.

I've met some of those guys. I always tell them, I pay for repairs, not guesses. I've stood by my word all these years. I'll keep bringing it back until it's really fixed and will refuse to pay for the same problem twice. I don't care what it costs, but it better be right when I pay.

Why do so many car owners fail to give their vehicles even the slightest tlc. Who'd have thought that a sliding mechanism might require a little lubrication.
Refreshing to see someone catch up with people's lack of preventative maintenance instead of firing the "parts cannon".
    Nice one Mike.

To most people that aren't us weird car enthusiasts a car is just a tool to get to place to place and holds no real place of sentiment to the individual. Also maintenance to most is "if it's not broken or left me stranded it's fine" preventative maintenance is a hard pill to swallow for many as things are not "technically broken"

An honest mechanic. Good show. Dealer would have charged for a new motor on passenger side, then flip the switch on the overhead console. lol

I hope this is not why he left the Wizard shop....I don't like how Wizard never misses a chance to tell us ''another shop wanted to replace everything or could not fix the issue''...That's strange and I don't like this ''bashing on everybody'' attitude. And I find the Wizard shop is always filled with the same cars...Not a big turnaround....

Good luck, can’t wait for your next episode

a good tip to all technicians of any discipline , always start with the simplest most obvious thing (in this case was a switch for one of the doors) and work your way up.

The problem with these vans (Pontiac Montana, Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander and Saturn Relay) are the power sliding doors opening while you are driving and the warning chimes sounding incessantly. I am in the process of removing both cables and disconnecting both motors as well as fuse #21 on my 2007 Terraza CXL. Maybe I should pull the dual green fuses as well.

@Magic Mike the Mechanic, hey! Nice to see you making some fixes. You know, that driver's side rear door sounded awful and it's clearly pretty dusty so I wondered if you recommend a lithium type lubricant which is much "thicker" or find that "thinner" lubricant like WD-40 is best? It seems as if a "thinner" lube would be better because you can more easily flush out dirt that might get attracted to it but then it wouldn't be as long-lasting. That passenger sliding door, as soon as you pressed the switch & nothing happened, I thought, "Is the switch/motor bad or has the automatic function been disabled?" I have a different van but it has the same options to disable the automatic sliding doors just as it has the option to prevent other passengers from operating the electric windows. Hope you and the puppy are doing well!

    • @bigduginc

WD-40 is not a lubricant. WD stands for water displacement.

I bet learning about that lockout made you wish you tried it first.
Reminds me of that time I was about to reinstall Windows to get a Wi-Fi card working because I tried multiple drivers and settings.
I knew about ways to turn it off and I tried the keyboard shortcut. Didn't consider the possibility that there could be a shortcut *as well as* a toggle switch.

Keep in mind that a Tahoe is a real “truck” and the Uplander is quite car like. My son in law has a Tahoe but he is able to fix it himself and doesn’t care about fuel consumption. I believe you’d save on gas with the Uplander but I suspect the Tahoe would be more reliable. Based on the V8 in the Tahoe and weight vs the V6 in the Uplander.

I own the same vehicle (but the 2006 Saturn version), even in the same color, with 215,000 miles. No door or glove box problems and no other problems of its own during a 7 year lifespan. The vehicle has been wonderful. However, mice have infested the overhead console, with mice droppings and urine spilling out. Horrible. A mechanic cleaned it out, but the mice droppings recurred. Anyone know how to prevent mice from infiltrating the overhead console?
