    Hey everyone!
The quartet of Tatis Jr., Machado, Soto, and Bogaerts are now all playing together and will be for the next couple years. Apart from these 4, the Padres have made more long-term player investments than any other team in the league. This is a very risky experiment, but the payoff could be immense. So, how exactly is a "small market" team doing this?

Also just interesting to watch what the Padres are doing in contrast to the A's. Both watched every other team in their respective cities leave but the Padres ownership decided that was an opportunity to become the heroes of San Diego and spent accordingly, and the fans are responding positively. Meanwhile the A's are just being embarrassments to the sport and burning every bridge they have with their fans just to be the third wheel in Las Vegas, and it's hard to believe people there are too fired up by what they're seeing from that team

San Diego was my pick to win the division and I will stand by it despite their slow start. It happens to every team with high expectations.
Soto will figure it out as well. And I agree with your take on Blake Snell. He's a pitcher who tends to start slow but he can easily pick it up by the summer.
He was one of the main pitchers in keeping SD's playoff hopes alive.

Of course itlll bust eventually but the brand equity gain offsets that. But yeah they HAVE to win. Not get close. Not almost. Must win to justify - atleast one. I love it. Towards the end you say the long term commitments could hinder the teams ability to go out and get better players. If you simply saw the names on the roster without the recent struggles you would say "Wow that team is STACKED!" Machado struggled his first year in SD, now Soto is going through it too. Just because you sign a top producing player doesn't mean that production is going to carry over to the new team right away. For example, Adam Frasier was traded from Pittsburgh to the Padres mid season with a BA in the mid .300s. He batted in the low .200s once he joined the Padres. So you can THINK you're getting a certain caliber of player and it might not turn out to be that way right away. The Padres have players of a solid character which will help them through the slump. I think the Padres will be showing their power by mid-season.

Seems like the MX series got them going. They brought that sombrero back and it seems a lot of the overall team issues to start this season stemmed from lack of energy + confidence. 16 hits last night and the home crowd welcome of Tatis was awesome. The team feeds off him, great to see Kim homer and double + grisham having hits. If the lower part of the order can produce to start innings off, it will make that Tatis Soto Machado combo at the top wholly more dangerous.
30 games in, still tough to come to any semblance of a conclusion yet. Baseball is finicky like that. But I surely hope they're primed for a winning streak now. Soto said he's getting his confidence back, he hit a double off the wall similarly to how he hit the MX city homer. His overall patience is too elite and it just feels that he's too good a hitter to not at least demolish the mid-tier to lower tier starters he will face throughout a long season. Padres had been going against some really good pitching early on.

There's something about teams and team chemistry that's impossible to quantify. The Pirates should not be as good as they are, THE RAYS should not be as good as they are, the Braves can seemingly pluck anyone off the street and put them in their lineup and they will post an .800 OPS. On the flip side are the Padres, the. Phillies and the Cardinals and a handful of teams each year that SHOULD be good on paper, can put 4-5 all-star level guys in their lineups and just are not that good. I don't know if it's coaching, clubhouse "culture" or just how certain guys feed off each other on the field, but baseball is a game where you can't buy a championship. It's like something special that builds in certain teams, sure good players help but there's just more to it than that.

Mmmm, um Kay. Didn't Dave Roberts give his word last year that LAD would win it,?! Yeah.... N look at how that turned out!! The pressure was on LAD the second the regular season ended.
I am guessing SDP is gonna have similar problems this year. Lol

What it’s ACTUALLY gonna do is get mlb to introduce a more strict salary cap structure. Which, as a Yankee fan, I hate. Though considering the newest Steinbrenner generations unwillingness to make substantial change, or spend substantial money (yes I know they paid Cole Rodon judge and Stanton, who else?) might not be the WPRST thing in the world.

The teams with seemingly unlimited funds don't seem to understand a huge part of baseball. That's team chemistry. You can buy all the best players but if they aren't out there having fun and full on vibing with each other as a team, they're fucked.
