- This video demonstrates the process of removing the brake caliper from a Vanmoof S3/X3, cleaning the brake pads and brake disc, reinstalling the caliper and adjusting the brake.
Great video - this helped me a lot! I now know how to adjust the brake to stop it from rubbing on the rotor when it’s not engaged. Thank you for doing this 👍🏻
Good job! My disc needed replacement. VM did not have any available so I bought some kevlar pads. I pretty much performed the same but since they squeak terribly I found that sanding and cleaning the rotors solved it.

Hi Tod, thanks for this video. I replaced the brake pads and also made sure the hydraulic oil was full and not leaking., Nevertheless, I still have very little break power. Is there anything that can be done with the cable? (I realize they are tubes holding fluid, but I have no better suggestion).

Thanks for this dude. Anything mechanical fixing maintenance etc s3 or X3 related is very useful. My disc on back is heating up terribly on my S3. Even with just a small amount of braking. Without using the brake, the disc/rotor stays cold. Any clues?
The reason for not squeezing the brakes when the caliper is off the frame is because otherwise the pads get stuck together. The same applies when taking the wheel off the bike. Don't squeeze them, or otherwise the pads get stuck together.

Great video, thanks a lot for posting. I accidentally used wd-40 instead of brake cleaner on the rotor of my new s3 (doh!).
Brakes still work but are a less reactive now. Would you recommend me applying some brake cleaner on the rotor, or would you say I need to take down the calliper and do what you did?
I am not an expert, but logic tells me that as WD40 is a lubricant it is the last thing you want on the rotors. I think it would be sufficient to just clean the rotors with brake cleaner and then probably also clean the brake pads off well or give them a quick sanding. Also, I find that breaking in the sanded brake pads makes a huge difference. After you have finished with everything, take your bike out and slowly work in the brakes by riding and then lightly braking until you come to a standstill. Do this 10 times. I have seen this on other videos from professionals. This primes the brakes and matches the surfaces of the pads agains the rotors. Good luck. Love my Vanmoof, awesome bike!
I have seen your video a little too late. I was trying to adjust break pads as my front wheel keeps making sound, I opened the front caliper and mistakenly engaged the break after caliper was taken off. Now my break does not work...any suggestion what I can do? I only bought my bike a week ago, do you think Vanmoof can fix it for me free of charge? Or is there a way to fix it myself? My front wheel stil makes sound as I beliive the disc keeps rubbing against break pad.
I suggest you take the bike to a bike shop. The brakes work an a hydraulic system so probably not easy to fix at home but I am sure any decent bike shop can do it and it should not be too expensive. Not sure if VanMoof will fix it. Good luck.

When you engaged the break the pistons of the caliper move towards the centre (to pinch the disc, were it there). Assuming they haven't come out too far they need pressing back. The usual way is the lever them back by inserting a flat head screw driver between the pistons (or if the pads are still in place between the pads). Push the pistons as far back as the can go. Hopefully this will enable the the caliper to fit round the disc and be remounted. Once loosely mounted remember to centre the caliper by applying the brake and with it still applied tighten the caliper fixings to the frame. Repeat this latter process if the breaks still catch. The pistons are difficult to push back, this is the reason why the breaks should not be applied when the calipers or break pads are removed.
