I've ❤ed the Fours since the mid 60's, when an older brother played the 45, Reach Out, every morning before school for about 3 years. I've enjoyed music over the years and I categorize 'Bernedette' & 'Standing in the Shadows of Love' as an operatic aria in the vein of Puccini.
no autotune. no lipsync. no scenography. no background dancers. no effects. no recorded instruments. no depressing lyrics nor complicated lyrics. just pure talent. and it's more amazing than any of the performances today
They've had background dancers before, on "Just Ask The Lonely". And they appeared to be all white girls. Pretty sure that Levi didn't appreciate that. He was quite defiant at times. ♊️ 🕊 🎶
I remember Levi was interviewed on NPR?, perhaps 20 years ago, and he was asked if he had ever thought about being a solo artist, instead of being simply a member of a group. I can't remember his exact words...but it was something like, 'They are my brothers and the thought of leaving never entered my mind.'
I attended Levi Stubbs' funeral and I think it was Obie Benson's son who got up and spoke about what it was like to have a Four Top for a father and the other three Four Tops as "uncles". When the kids messed up, they'd get four times the scoldings and admonitions. But when the kids excelled, they'd have four times the praise showered on them.
The four most classy, artistically sound quartet in the history of music... No one Top was better than the other. IMO Levi was the man, his passion, singing, set the tone for a great performance. Performed 40 years together which is a rarity until LP (Lawrence Peyton) died in 1997, Obie would follow a few years later and Levi's velvet smooth voice silenced forever in 2008. God blessed each of the guys with a gift and they gave that gift back to millions of fans.
This is just timeless…Levi’s vocals…the totally unchoreographed dancing…the pure soul…the enjoyment…the effortless euphoria…the little bits not in the original version like “each heartache lasts a little longer” ❤️❤️❤️🎉
Levi Stubbs -- Amazing voice and a class act. He could have gone solo and left the others, but he knew that the Tops were amazing as a whole. Miss him.
If anything it was probably easier to make money from music back in the 1960s, when people were still buying millions of records every week. Most musicians aren't exactly getting rich today, when Spotify or RUclips gives them some tiny fraction of a cent every time their song is streamed, but they keep making music anyway. If your goal is just to make money, being a musician today is not a good strategy.
FOUR TOPS! Motown's Best Guy Group! I bet if this song were released today it would Rocket to No. one on the charts in two weeks! This performance was in the early 1960's and we all love it still! Amazing! Levi Stubbs (lead singer) had a great voice and the other threes were great also! THIS IS CLASSIC GREATNESS!
Here, the Motown machine marched to the Billboard summit of #1 on both the US and US R &B T-40 charts; and, #10 on the UK chart. There's no wonder: "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) is a well-structured, pop love song that captured a 1965 American moment.
I was lucky enough to live in Detroit in 1965 and saw Levi, Obie Duke and Lawrence at the Flame Show Bar and the Roostertail. The greatest Motown group ever!
9 лет назад
My01mustang I was living in a suburb just east of Detroit back in '65 and damn, but we had the greatest music around.
My01mustang You were so fortunate to be there! I was liiving there in the 80s, but listened to CKLW since I was a kid. I cannot get enough of Motown!!!
Pure talent right there folks, no miming , voice enhancing equipment or any other nonsense. Just totally live brilliance. These people are incredibly hard to find. The world salutes you.
I just love this music, the 4 Tops were my favorite tune in on AM radio from Detroit in the 60's. Only thing better was seeing them live in Detroit and Cleveland! Never forget shaking Levi and Dukes hands back in Cleveland, Ohio in the 80's at the North Coast Harbor Event. What a group of friends performing !!!!
What can I say, I will never get tired of listening to the Four Tops the most incredible band ever came out of Motown fantastic voices and the dancing so heartwarming and soul lifting always makes me happy watching them❤️❤️❤️from the UK alwsys and forever❤️❤️❤️
Four Tops and Levi Stubbs right here, over 50 years ago, are still one of the Greatest Groups in Motown History. Think about it! Here we are watching a video that is 50 years old - and are still amazed at this great video. That is what we call "Greatness" and lasting power. I still love the Four Tops and in my view they are a far better rock group than anything I've seen in the current "Soft Rock" genre. This is A Classic Peformance. Levi Stubbs and the Four Tops were the Best of Motown.
So-called 'boy bands' of today could do no worse than learning from the MASTERS, such as these. This is what you call MUSIC. And it is the type of music that is truly EVERLASTING.
Aww I may not have been born in those times but it really reminds me of growing up at my grandparents they always played this song. Oh and Otis Redding.
What a classy quartet! I know Levi was the main man, but I just love Obie. He really gets into the dance with a big cheesy grin and he's such a natural mover. I'm not old enough to have been around when they were peaking, but they have 10 times the talent and class of most of today's pop superstars.
Abdul looks so cute with his Sally Jesse Raphael glasses :) Seriously no Motown classic like this should even have a thumbs down option. These songs sound just as magical 50 years later if not better.
I could watch this exact same video over and over a million times and it would be the equivalent of watching a Stream flow or a campfire... it's absolutely mesmerizing in a perfect way
They will never recapture this Magic....Like tryin' to capture lightin' in a jar...Glad I lived during those years of creative artists....If you don't feel this you are Dead...
Love the way Levi starts goofing around at 1.34 when he is singing the lyrics about being choked up inside - four tops always come across as four genuinely great guys who really enjoyed performing.
So many of the Four Tops' songs were about heartbreak and being lonely, it was good to hear some songs about the joy of love...."I Can't Help Myself" and "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got". But of course, I'm a sucker for the sad songs.
FOUR TOPS! Levi Stubbs + other members of The Four Tops were the best Motown Vocal Group! This song, if released today, would rocket to number one on Billboard Top 100 List! This a A Classic Great Performance
On this day in 1965 {June 28th} the New York City disc jockey Murray the K's television special, 'It's What's Happening, Baby!’, was aired on the CBS-TV network... One of the eighteen acts to appear on the show were the Four Tops; at the time the Motown quartet's "I Can't Help Myself" was in its first of two non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, it had entered the Top 100 at position #67 and spent 14 weeks on the chart... And at the time it was also at #1 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart; it had reached the top spot on May 30th, 1965 and remained there for 9 weeks...
I Love You Levi Stubbs. I Love the Four Tops. Your sound is my childhood. I grew up listening to you all and recently Have found ya'all again. I can't help myself.... listening to you all again and again.
Fiona Burns I was born in 1981 and I love 1980's music, so although this is before my time, I have a love for music from the 1960's and 1970's as well thanks to my mother.
One of my very favorite groups. I've always loved theses guys. I was heartbroken over Levi's health situation. He was such a great singer and s wonderful human being. I loved it when the Four Tops and the Temptation's got together.
Its sad that the world had to lose him in such manner such a talented singer and It was a wonderful performance from the two groups. What’s your favorite song from the four tops ?
These guys are having so much fun with this performance. I can feel the energy coming out through my monitor. It sends chills down my spine. Amazing performers that I wish I could have seen live.
THE FOUR TOPS=Timeless Talent. Levi Stubbs had a great voice, and the songs this great group sang in the 1960's and beyond are still relevant and loved. Quite a remarkable legacy! God Bless You Levi Stubbs and All the Four Tops!
On this day in 1966 {January 30th} the Four Tops appeared on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... They performed a medley of their hits; "It's the Same Old Song" {#5 in 1965}, "Something About You" {#19 in 1965}, and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" {#1 for 2 weeks in 1965}... Lead singer Levi Stubbs, aka Levi Stubbles, passed away on October 17th, 2008 at the age of 72... R.I.P. Mr. Stubbs and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...
June 19, 1965 - The Four Tops went to No.1 on the US singles chart with “I Can't Help Myself”. Lead singer Levi Stubbs had not been satisfied with the recording session and was promised that he could do it again the following day, but no other session ever took place. The track that became a hit was just the second take of the song.
I got to see Mr Fakir perform last year in San Diego. Time fly sooo fast..looking at this video makes me happy, yet sad.. thank you for the wonderful music!!!!
How can anyone give these guys a thumbs down. All their songs are brilliant.
Miserable peeple😅😂
A Timeless Classic !
Loved The Four Tops ! ❤
Such a HAPPY time !
Maybe it’s not the music they dislike…
Is it me, or does the world need a little bit more funky music?
It really cheers the soul.
Yes it does
Nope. Sugar Pie Honey Bunch doesn’t need any more funk. It’s perfectly made.
Watching the Tops dance is all one needs for funk. Love them!
Much more.
Did you know this is the type of singing and music that will be praising our Lord God of the Most High in heaven. You can feel the joy & happiness.

Love them and their songs, thanks guys for all the wonderful music!! Xx Yvette
The record companies threw a lot of offers to Levi, he said no. That’s character.
True Gemini ♊️ ❤

Levi sings so effortlessly as if he's just talking what a voice
levi made singing as simple to him aa spelling the 4 tops
Levi, a class act and a fine human being!!!!
So true
LEVI ONE GREATEST VOICES EVER AMEN…DR.BRYANT LANE….

This is just timeless…Levi’s vocals…the totally unchoreographed dancing…the pure soul…the enjoyment…the effortless euphoria…the little bits not in the original version like “each heartache lasts a little longer” ❤️❤️❤️🎉
Remembering my dad on what would've been his 78th birthday. This was his favorite group! I love and miss you. Rest on Sir! ♥
❤️
Levi Stubbs -- Amazing voice and a class act. He could have gone solo and left the others, but he knew that the Tops were amazing as a whole. Miss him.
They were all friends and his humility was he couldn’t do what the others did. He lifted the band as one.
Back when music made to make people happy, not just make money.
It's the dancing that really does that.
If anything it was probably easier to make money from music back in the 1960s, when people were still buying millions of records every week. This song reminds me of unpretentious times in my teenage years. Granted I'm only 41, but still. The 90s as a teen was simple, uncomplicated.

They don't write the music, it's just record companies making some easy money.
And that is my point...
These were "Man Bands" boys need not apply.
Aww I may not have been born in those times but it really reminds me of growing up at my grandparents they always played this song. Oh and Otis Redding.

Levi is one of those rare singers that can bring urgency to his voice and still sing!
Abdul looks so cute with his Sally Jesse Raphael glasses :) Seriously no Motown classic like this should even have a thumbs down option. These songs sound just as magical 50 years later if not better.
great pared down version which really shows just what a brilliant song this is.
i don't think i'll ever get over you V. thanks for the good times (and the bad)
I've always thought the coolness of the Four Tops is they've never managed to be cool, they're just fantastic
I can't help myself swinging & singing along in my chair ! These guys will Never be "over the top" for me....just pure CLASS !
***** Hoi Paulo. Ja hoor alles prima. Met jou hopelijk ook? Bedankt voor je berichtje en een hele fijne week nog. Groetjes terug.
Love the way Levi starts goofing around at 1.34 when he is singing the lyrics about being choked up inside - four tops always come across as four genuinely great guys who really enjoyed performing.
effortless classy performance!!!!!
Just pure joy. It just emanates from them.
Look at how happy these gentlemen were. They was enjoying life no drama or any dumb crap.
They're incredible! Their dance movements, the song, and the upbeat performance are something to see and hear. I love them.
Levi Stubbs best motown singer of all time
I just saw them a couple nights ago with the Temptations and it was wonderful. The old man was still great.
The theme song to the courtship of my girl who agreed to marry me on the 29th of September. ..I'm delighted. She delights me .
What a voice Levi has. Everytime I hear the 4 Tops I cry. We all miss you Levi.
Such a CLASSIC! Still gets stuck in peoples minds.. so brilliant
Duke really gets his groove on in this clip! fantastic!!
So many of the Four Tops' songs were about heartbreak and being lonely, it was good to hear some songs about the joy of love...."I Can't Help Myself" and "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got". But of course, I'm a sucker for the sad songs.
One of the best rock and roll songs ever recorded!
They perform with so much joy!
Che gruppo! Il migliore di tutti tempi. Anche IL "Temps"
Those were the good old days! Luv that song.

the beat of this music is wonderful-never to be duplicted-what the funk band did with this group will never be equalled
I played in a number of bands/styles over the years, but this stuff is the real deal.
Levi Stubbs, Tte best male voice ever in my opinion, I never get tired of listening to him sing
Nothing but the 60s! I was 6 yrs old in 1965. Levi had it goin' on! Live no autotune!
That was bloody amazing!
FOUR TOPS! Levi Stubbs + other members of The Four Tops were the best Motown Vocal Group! This song, if released today, would rocket to number one on Billboard Top 100 List! This a A Classic Great Performance
they look like their havin an absolute blast! :) Brilliant performance.

my all time favorite group !! never a scandal with them !!
Back when talent was required to make it in the music industry!
100% truth!
Randy H. Shame it's all down to looks and marketing now everything is artificial I've zero respect for most of today's "artists"
Fiona Burns I was born in 1981 and I love 1980's music, so although this is before my time, I have a love for music from the 1960's and 1970's as well thanks to my mother.
I know right.
Music had substance back then, now it's just like fast food. ...no substance and gets churned out every other minute.
loook how happy they are!. oh my, how i wish music could be like this again
truly, one of musics most precious treasures. its not that they dont write songs like this anymore, ITS THAT THEY CANT WRITE SONGS LIKE THIS ANYMORE
I need to get into more Motown bands. Whenever I'm asked, I can only name about three maybe four tops...
Jack Lewery har har har, fine joke there sir
One of my very favorite groups. I've always loved theses guys. I was heartbroken over Levi's health situation. He was such a great singer and s wonderful human being. I loved it when the Four Tops and the Temptation's got together.
