I use a Browning 725 12 gauge Feather over and under with 26 inch long barrels and use Tru-lock extended ported and blackened stainless steel chokes. The under barrel in improved cylinder and the over in improved modified.
I prefer an Improved Modified. This is between full, not improved, and modified. We reload and have adapted our loads to certain chokes. I inherited 50+ choke tubes from my dad who field-tested them for companies. My father in law shot full at quail all his life. It does seem to be a preference, but it is also in relation to your loads. Patterning your loads, shooting at paper with a thirty-inch circle stapled to cardboard reveals a lot and is a fun offseason activity.
There can't be that many Swygards out there, so I assume your dad was Ned. I connected with him over the internet in regards to reloading and chokes and hunting, and enjoyed his expertise, and it was a sad day when I learned he had passed. It is nice to see that his son has the same kind of passion for hunting. I stil have a couple of emails he sent with me a couple special loads that I still use. A great guy!. Take Care, W.
have to check with what choke tube you are using. most manufacturer choke tube that come with your gun will say in you manual if you can use with steel. Most after markets choke tubes especially ones for waterfowl you can use with steel or other Non toxic shot. you alsoe have to watch with things like premium shots that ore other shapes then your normal round BB ( Ex Winchester Blind Side) may require a specific Choke tube.
Thanks for all the info! in the past week I tried to go with a full joke because that’s what my brother-in-law hunts with but I’m switching back to the modified because it works better for me
So my thing is is that so many people said not to use a full choke when duck hunting but the book said not to, so then why ? But if I do use a full choke what shot size am I limited to???
So I have only duck hunted once but I’m on the Junior Olympic team for skeet shooting and I shoot a full and a improved mod all the time but I don’t know if I should use a full or a improved mod for ducks because I’m just getting started with ducks. And also my friends only like shooting ducks from 20-35 yards
i got some carlsons cremator chokes for my winchester sx4. they are portedbut when screwed all the way down the porting is inside the barrel. I may be new to shotguns but that seems wrong. am i right?
I have a kicks high flyer Mod and love it. I recently cleaned it and the black finish on the inside of the ported section came off. Has this happened to you? It now has just a brass colored finish on the inside of the ported section. Do you think this will effect how it patterns? Thanks!
Juilen Gagnon , deepening in the choke you can shoot steel shot through. A lot of your factory chokes tell don’t shoot steel shot through your full chokes but if you a aftermarket choke like the pattern master full that i shot it’s rated for steel 1550 FPS and lower
If you don't have a lot of money don't waste it on a choke. The ones that come with your gun will work just fine. Spend your money on practicing at a sporting clays course and pattern a couple different kinds of shells to see what patterns best. You'll be far better off.
I'm caught in between modified and full. All my ducks finish differently. I have to "sky blast" alot on public. Sometimes I'll get em to finish but usually they flare too far away. However, my pond I can get em to finish pretty close. I think full choke is best but would like your guys opinions. I've pheasant hunted all my life and am a pretty good shot and I shoot trap. What would you use in these scenarios?
I wish to use M choke to be more chance of kill and maybe get 2 by one shot ! but only use full choke to shoot far some time even the birds bit high no see intentions to get down so fire !! make some noise :) also hit & get down some times , only reason I use F choke all time , i wish to know from baikal 153 and 32 "inch bore how far a full choke goes far then M choke ? ( I got 3 chokes with the gun I .will buy any choke if needs to be have better performance )
WaterfowlUnloaded look online most websites have specific chokes for each brand of gun if you can’t find one use a benelli/beretta one of those two companies runs stoeger can’t remember which one
It's a Beretta/Benelli mobile fit I have two duck guns with that fit I have a Kicks highflyer full choke but recently changed to a Carlson's full and mod there pretty good and cheaper than the Kicks
In my own opinion.. Save your money & buy a .720 Terror choke tube for short or long shots at duck or geese you'll never need another choke tube ever for waterfowl hunting hands down..
Don’t trust RUclips Chokes can REALLY mess up your gun and there are SO MANY Consult your firearms operating manual. If you don’t have the manual, look up your shotguns make online and download a PDF Or.... you could end up spending big money with your local gunsmith
Haha too funny listrning to the poster comment "best reason for an extended choke tube is so it's easier to get out of your gun in case it ceases" haha .. shoot for another 30-40+ years and then let's talk choke tubes and loads.. cheers
How does your buddy use a full choke for all birds? I was told that using a full choke with steel shots is a big NO. Unless you guys can shoot Waterfowl with led shots. Please clarify
You just left us with "Cope Junkies" just sitting there. You said you weren't going to do dip videos and that's fine. But don't just leave the channel there in the dust, do something with it plz!
Length of barrel used to be involved in the choke. You had to lengthen the barrel to get a tighter constriction, i.e. full coke. No longer thanks to screw in chokes. Long barrels help you aim, short barrels are quicker, theoretically.
it seems like modified is like the sweet spot of chokes when it comes to game bird and small game and also trap shooting

Brad Swygard.. words of wisdom

This is my first year out hunting Canada Geese. Using Winchester Blindside #2 and BB shot, I was going to stick with my modified choke.
I was always told no full choke with steel. So I can use full with steel?

Everything I've read about a full choke is that most are not compatible with steel shot. I use a modified choke and have had good success with it.
They make full choke for steel I use a extra full
Thanks for all the info! in the past week I tried to go with a full joke because that’s what my brother-in-law hunts with but I’m switching back to the modified because it works better for me
I use full every day when i go out just need to be able to have good judgement when shooting far and close
So my thing is is that so many people said not to use a full choke when duck hunting but the book said not to, so then why ? But if I do use a full choke what shot size am I limited to???

Hello. Im looking for the best recoil reduction /muzzle break out of a choke tube. Would you give me your opinion which is best for this/ Thank you.
I just keep a full in at all times, for dove and whatever, code black goose choke from patternmaster.
What choke for Grouse hunting? Thanks!
Emporia state? Are you from Kansas? I went to emporia state university back in 2010-2014.
I have a kicks high flyer Mod and love it. I recently cleaned it and the black finish on the inside of the ported section came off. Has this happened to you? It now has just a brass colored finish on the inside of the ported section. Do you think this will effect how it patterns?
Thanks!
That black finish is just to prevent sunlight from reflecting a sort of camo.
I use modified for everything from waterfowl to Upland bird too small game to turkey
What kind of shot loads can u shoot through a inproved cylinder
I use a wad wizzard swat and it is between a light mod and mod and it patterned insane
Did you and Luke ever quit dipping?
Silverado Man Luke had a dip in during that dove hunting video I think! He may not have
What choke do you use with steel shot?
Usually IC or Mod
Can you use a choke with steel shot?
Julien Gagnon yeah, just not a full choke
Juilen Gagnon , deepening in the choke you can shoot steel shot through. A lot of your factory chokes tell don’t shoot steel shot through your full chokes but if you a aftermarket choke like the pattern master full that i shot it’s rated for steel 1550 FPS and lower
I only have a little bit of money to spend on a choke. I would like and extended choke for my mossberg 500. What should I get?
If you don't have a lot of money don't waste it on a choke. The ones that come with your gun will work just fine. Spend your money on practicing at a sporting clays course and pattern a couple different kinds of shells to see what patterns best. You'll be far better off.
does using a tighter choke mean you can aim closer to the duck? you dont have to have a farther lead?
evan bowling no...lead is the same, tighter means it will hold more pellets in a closer circle so you can shoot further away
I'm caught in between modified and full. All my ducks finish differently. I have to "sky blast" alot on public. Sometimes I'll get em to finish but usually they flare too far away. Out Fishing Your Bass improved modified

I can't hit anything to save my life with a full choke, I got to use my modified but we are most likely dealing with nothing more than 30 yards
What Barrel is better short-barrel or long barrel for duck hunting
Long?
Do you know what kind of extended choke tube I can get for my stoeger m3500
carlson long range
WaterfowlUnloaded look online most websites have specific chokes for each brand of gun if you can’t find one use a benelli/beretta one of those two companies runs stoeger can’t remember which one

I have a carlson's improved mod. works awesome , I I have a stoger m3000
Jace Pribyl Benelli runs Stoeger
In my own opinion.. Save your money & buy a .720 Terror choke tube for short or long shots at duck or geese you'll never need another choke tube ever for waterfowl hunting hands down..
We breed Labs if you're ever looking. We're located north of Topeka

I just noticed the ESU flag! Im from Belle Plaine, south of Wichita, and went to WSU, shot shotgun sports there!
Light mod for me
Haha too funny listrning to the poster comment "best reason for an extended choke tube is so it's easier to get out of your gun in case it ceases" haha .. shoot for another 30-40+ years and then let's talk choke tubes and loads.. cheers

Very long winded and repeats itself. The wad type or shot type isn’t even mentioned. Steel lead ??? Non toxic ?
Use anti seize

Kicks chokes high flyer modify are Garbage. Scatters BB's everywhere. Hands down Patter master mid range is a more uniform pattern.
Modified paternmaster

Tyler Bowen long

26-28" I've shot both extensively and I personally prefer the 28".
28" is the best choice for waterfowl...
