Pyrrhus' case is a sad one , he was a great general , thought by Hannibal to be the best in the world , and an Even better king , however , now he will forever be known as "the guy that inspired the term pyrrhic victory" , a shame
I think what Hannibal said was that for him Alexander the Great was the best general ever, Pyrrhus was second, but he could put himself before either of them had he beaten Scipio at the battle of Zama.

One of my favorite ancient battles. Proved that the phalanx could go toe to toe with the much more flexible legions if the commander wasn’t incompetent. But this doesn’t change the fact that the legion was still Superior in every way. The fact that the legion could fight on any terrain made it lethal to any Greek army.

Originally, I was planning to write about early manipular legion (primarily hastati and principes) using spears rather than swords during Pyrrhic War unfortunately I couldn't find the exact source about that. As for the source i am using, I read from Joanne Berry and Nigel Pollard's The Complete Roman Legions book where they wrote about Manipular legions but they didn't state what weapons they used during the early maniple phase. Consider that Alexander the Great(not the epirote Alexander the Molossian before Pyrrhos) didnt stand face to face a Roman like organized, equally sized heavy infantry(we can call it western style army), therefore Pyrrhos was as great as Alexander, clever strategos(he could siege Rome but he reserved his people's life from cut off) and greatest tactician in his time because he can manoveur around his solid phalanx and he was able to change formations for better, more favourable advantages in the battlefield.
I was actually surprised that the phalanx suffered so many casualties. It seems that the romans were at least equal when fighting the phalanx head on. Am I mistaken?
If I saw a bunch of armored elephants charging me in the middle of a battle, I'd run TOO! Lol. That's a complete a total, "Fuck this shit I'm going home!" kind of moment. Lol That's probably what the romans thought. And they had NEVER even seen elephants before! They must have been absolutely horrified at those angry, massive giant BEASTS charging towards them!
A phalanx is very strong from the front and vulnerable from the flanks. If in neither of these 2 battles the phalanx was flanked how did they manage to suffer so heavy losses?
Roman infantry was well protected and disciplined so they were able to close the gap to the phalanx (although rather high losses) and thus make sarissa very ineffective.
