- This must be one of Phil Lynott's last television interviews. Guessing by the UFO album review this must have aired in November 1985, about 8 weeks before his death thanks to those damn drugs. What a loss.
Aired on Sky Channel (Monsters of Rock show).
Phil's death was a big , big loss to music. There has never been a better lyricist in Heavy Rock music !
Much has been written about Phil's last days but he seems to be in reasonable enough form here. Very sad that his future plans didn't come to fruition, I'd have loved to hear what him and Gary would've done next - along with that Grand Slam number 'Sisters of Mercy' finally being committed to vinyl, it was always my favourite post-Lizzy song and my gut tells me Phil would've definitely have had it on his 3rd solo album. RIP Phil, you were the man.
:-) I remember him at a Grand Slam show in Glasgow, introducing that song as "Sisters Of Murphy".
He was indeed, The Man.
I REALLY like the 3 song demo that he made a week before dying, can't get away and one wish were pure class, he had more to give and grow as an artist. Such a tragedy
Sad to see him talking about all his plans that never came to pass.
He allowed drugs to destroy him
While shopping in Kingston Surrey around about 83 or 84,
crossing the street and coming towards my friend and I was
Phil Lynott! Such a presence was he glad in leather, very tall and slim.
I couldn't help but smile and will always remember that day.
I couldn't bring myself to ask for an autograph.
What a Memory. I would have done the same Star Struck a bit Shy. Well said Mate.
So sad still a young man
He had a lot more great music to share
god bless him
he seemed in good health here even if he always had a short breath.and I am sure that he falled on christmas day because of pneumonia, the cold of winter took him first and his poor body (heroin, alcohol) could not resist.
He fought 11 days and he's gone.
a french old fan, sad for ever
No, it was sepsis. He fell over and cracked his elbow and infection set in. There was no way back for someone whose immune system was so shot. :-(
@@luthiersimon so why did he fall over in first ?
@@backinashT64 Who knows. I heard he was in rehab at the time.
@@backinashT64 He probably did a whack of heroin, nodded off, and fell down hitting himself on the way. What a stupid drug.
Even in his last days Phil was a badass! RIP Phil!!🎸
He seems to have always been moving on into the future, whatever that might involve. Definitely material for a film bio.
"have you heard of Journey??" Jesus.... Thin Lizzy TOURED with Journey!!
🚫 Yeah that's a stupid question, considering that Journey is the 5th best selling musical act of all time, and considering their career had already peaked by 1985, with the majority of their most popular hits behind them! It wouldve been like asking a heavy metal band if they'd ever heard of Van Halen in 1990! 🤪
"We plan to do the follow up to 'Out in The Fields' in January"
😭
Biggest loss to Rock music ever, Phil could do virtually any style just listened to his solo albums. RIP Philo you were the best of the lot!
He had so much to give as an artist and had a lot of growth left, when he passed... I loved the can't away demo... His children were so young So tragic
Great clip, now we know how he came up with Nineteen, thanx for posting
It's devastating hearing Phil talking about getting some ready "for March" knowing what we know now. Also a little bizarre to hear him saying the phrase "heavy metal" and mentioning people like Michael Jackson. Phil's so permanently locked in the '70s in my brain, I forget that he was around in this early MTV era. Wish we was still with us. He'd be 74 now and probably still out on the road if he had his way. We miss you, Phil.
When can we see you live again?
- Hopefully in march.
:'(
Philo!!! Still miss you ... madly
Lonely Cowboy... Missing Lizzy
Wow, he looks strung out. His eyes are closed. Tragic. Big loss.
Like other appearances from this time you can hear Phil has problems breathing, that he's gasping for air. Such a shame that he couldn't give it up.
He did give it up, but it was too late
So sad to see this. Phil looks so thin and wasted out of his mind here and is just a shell functioning on auto pilot. I think they knew but Phil being Phil would always dodge the issues with his steely bravado that hid the sad reality of it all. In 4 months he would be dead. RIP.
Breaks my Heart!!!!!!He WAS THE BEST...PHIL does not look good at all,so sad:( Love him forever!!!!
I hate it when interviewers cut off the interviewee...
There was a magic between Phil and Gary Moore…
Such a big loss :(
I always believed that if Gary and Phil had stayed together from 74 onward , they would've been huge all over the world, not just the UK. Sadly they never really cracked America, but they were too god for America, I know, I'm an American
OMG these old clips from 80s TV look so old and dated now
He looks sad
You're projecting.
RIP
Strange but obviously Yellow Pearl (great track) was a TOTP theme and subsequently Paul Hardcastle's The Wizard took over from it.
You can see the heroin in his eyes and his breathing is very labored. Got even worse the following month.
He was sober
He wasnt sober or clean. He died few weeks later.
Miss you, Phil
Who is the presenter? She is seriously gorgeous and she looks fantastic in those sexy shoes :0)
R.I.P. Phil, the greatest Irish star of them them all.
Asking the real questions.
She is super hot
Amanda Reddington. Had a major crush back in the day.
What about Rory?? Phill was one of the best defo I think rory was better though
Somebody needs to make a movie about 'Lizzy. Reintroduce them to the world
Yep. I would love to ignite that flame
Spot on ... rock'n roll Hall of Fame
8 years on from your post. It's happened
This interview took place Nov.1984?
It's interesting that the "skull and crossbones" are directly above Phil's head here, and also that the UFO cover shows an instrument of death, and the Y and T cover illustrates a "vampire".
And heroin took Phil out January 4, 1986.
Don't freak out about it...
He's Free Now.
shit just got real....
Phil was never in FREE.
This is all so very sad.
A movie about Phil Lynott, but done right, is badly needed. IN the UK people would love it, in America people would go "Phil Who?" because thin lizzy were too good for America. after TBABIT , they kind of faded from the American charts, but they were on a shitty label .. mercury
Warner Bros. didnt do much with them either. They put all thier dollars into Van Halen in 1978 when Lizzy were signed.
1985, sorry...
Shto
hey man I actually was replying to the comment that some racist dude left on here. I'm puerto rican and black and a big fan of phil and that comment the dude left bummed me out that said your comment is what i'd like to have said.
is that Mick Wall?
yes
@ you can see Phil Lynott doesn't give a fuuuuuuuck about the stupid records Mick Wall is punting ....Phil in this phase always remonded me of the viz character "Sid the sexist" his eyes and expression
is this nov 84 or 85?
November 1985. I think that he was hospitalised in late December 1985/January 1986.
Why would you sink to his racist, dooooshbag level with that reply?
