  • Key opinion leaders in the pulmonology space share how a breakthrough device known as the Zephyr Valve is a viable, safe and proven treatment option for patients struggling with severe COPD/emphysema. The Zephyr Valve was the first minimally invasive option to reduce breathlessness and improve quality of life for patients with severe COPD/emphysema without the risk of major surgery. Until the Zephyr Valve was developed approved in 2018, there were not good options for patients who continued to struggled to breathe, despite medication adherence.

There are no doctors who provide this near me and I cannot travel. Is there a way to get on an list for doctors in my area who may be adding on to provide this procedure. We all deserve to have a shot at breathing and keeping our lives longer. Being an x smoker, one is treated like a criminal who deserves to suffocate because they smoked. There was once a time that DOCTORS advertised for tobacco industry promoting smoking and their preferred cigarette brand. Most pulmonologists don't remember how the medical community did this even knowing how highly addictive and deadly this would be for people. My pulmonologist has never once mentioned pulmonary rehab or the Zephyr valve procedure to me or any of his patients!!!!

I had a small cancer at the top of my right lung in 2020. Pre-surgery, during a biopsy to see if the cancer showed up anywhere else, my lung collapsed. A few weeks later I had 2/3rds of my right lung removed to get all the cancer even though I was told pre-surgery that it was the size of a dime. While the surgeon says I am cancer free, I am now 'blessed' with COPD. I get bronchitis easily and have such scary difficult times with breathing. I am going to find out about this procedure. I have oxygen that I use as needed as well as a nebulizer and I administer Trelegy daily. I was healthy before the cancer surgery and I'm willing to look at anything that might improve my quality of life.

You might be a good candidate for Zephyr valve surgery. If you are young ( under 50y) your chances of successful procedure are good. Have you done any research into Valve lung surgery ? The valve surgery only helps remove CO2 from your air sacks so you can breath in new Oxygen.@@JBell-gm5vx

I went through all the tests and my pulmonary doctor gave me a 50/50 chance of not having life threatening complications from valve surgery. I have severe emphysema. He told me there was a 50% risk of me having a collapsed lung either during or after the procedure. If during surgery or in the recovery room the lung collapses He will try to inflate the lung , If it will not inflate then he has to find out why it won't inflate and perform what ever surgery to say my life. Currently I only have a 30% lung capacity and if I have complications I could loose the 30% breathing capacity that I have left.
The reason I'm taking the time to write this comment is whoever is out there looking for help with their breathing issues and hear about this type of lung procedure don't get your hopes up high. You have tests before the procedure that the doctor needs to approve of and the last test will be on the operating table just before surgery ( fissure leaks ).
In my case the Doctor gave me a 50/50 chance of recovery and during the surgery. I decided not to have the surgery done.
I kept my emotions about this whole procedure in neutral and when I got the news from the doctor I had almost no depression afterwards. So go into this whole Valve Procedure thing with an open and neutral mind set and don't let your hopes and emotions over come you and of course always pray to the lord.

O.K., I have to be careful how I say this…. Awesome valve and technology…… after listening to this video, I realized that doctors and nurses were mentioned, and couldn’t understand why Respiratory Therapists were completely left out of this video…. Yes, I was an RRT ( registered respiratory therapist ) for 41 years and am probably hyper sensitive to this dilemma, but I am discouraged with the lack of recognition that the RT’s receive in our society….. Covid helped to show that we were in fact an integral part of the health care team as well as all the other healthcare professionals (who aren’t nurses) who very rarely ever get mentioned in articles. That being said, I am very thankful for all the patients who are being impacted by this device. It is ALWAYS most importantly about them. ( the patient ).

The first thing effected is the brain

    • @kendaleklund7475

Tell your boyfriend to use the Parsed Lip breathing method. Make sure to breath through your nose quickly for a 1 count, then exhale through your parsed lips for a count of 3. Perform this procedure as often has you can remember. Do this procedure quick and repeated quite often!
When you inhale air though your nose quickly, a slight vacuum in created inside your lungs, this lower pressure allows the Carbon Dioxide to leave the blood in your lungs and enter the air in your lungs easier. Exhaling through your parsed lips, will increase the pressure within your lungs, which will help force the oxygen from the air in your lung to the blood stream in your lung! It may take a few weeks but this will cause your body to eliminate the excess CO2 from your blood. I have learned this through experience! Good Luck!

    • @kendaleklund7475
      @kendaleklund7475 11 месяцев назад +2

Have an ABG test performed to determine the amount of CO2, HCO3 in your blood and the Ph of the blood. If the HCO3 is higher than normal your body has had excess CO2 for a long period of time. Using the Parsed lib breathing method for a month then the HCO3 and CO2 should return to normal and you will be able to function a lot better!

Hello dragon. I too suffer from CO2 Retention. It's when you cant exhale and the CO2 gas stays in you air sacs and this leaves no room for fresh oxygen to to enter the lungs. The only relief I have is purse breathing. It does work to remove at least some of the CO2 gas in the air sacs. You have to get in the habit of purse breathing all the time. They stopped working! Oh no. And after the 100 staples?! I don't even know what the fissures are. :( I had the flu and coughed so bad, and my so-called "doctor" (demented old "nurse man" PA or NP or whatever) said I would die immediately because I smoke. But I can't even qualify for an inhaler! No scans to see my lungs; nothing. (And then I asked for Tussionex and was treated like a crack head, though it was the last cough med I had and it had done well. They gave me "DMX" cough syrup.)
But I learned my hematocrit and hemoglobins were high, and I was going to push for the Zephyrs. But not if they stop working after a month. Or if they have to staple things in my lungs! I'm so sorry that didn't work. Have you heard antying about the stem cell treatment?

You should be on some meds. You may need lorazapam...my family member takes it and although the books don't like it (says it depresses lungs) it actually helps her breath. Ofcourse that may not work for you. You should be on oxygen maybe Drink coffee & plenty of water, she regularly has mucinex expectorant as needed, prednisone as needed, uses a nebulizer, and has advair inhaler. Regular cough drops are good to. The menthal opens up the airways. Don't forget to breath through your nose. So sorry you feel scared. Lorazapam may be a godsend for you. Stretch everyday, it takes away stress. Learn to love wasabi..

Dan, were you evaluated by a Zephyr trained physician? Only a Zephyr trained doctor can properly evaluate whether or not you are a candidate for treatment. The Zephyr Valve treatment is for patients with severe emphysema (a form of COPD). There is an evaluation process that will be completed by a treating physician to determine if you are a candidate for the treatment. Only a Zephyr Valve trained physician can determine if you are a candidate.

All Copd patients should go through Pulmonary Rehab at least once. This gives you the education you will need to know your limitations and side effects of COPD.
It's not the end of the world and if you take care of yourself and stay away from smokey environments and environments that are really dusty and dirty you can still live to breath another day. If you think there is some way to go back to your life as before you are just setting yourself up for severe depression.
The name of the game is " Maintenance" of your condition meaning treat the symptoms, eat right, get plenty of sleep, take care of your body by doing a little exercise at least three times per week and your whole outlook on the disease will get brighter.
I'm still a little shy when it comes to strapping on my oxygen bottle and going into the public. I don't know why but its' getting to where I don't care what anyone thinks anymore. It's all about my breathing . Besides, my life span could go into my eighties if I take care of myself. I don't think I want to live on this earth past my eighties. So what the heck.

More and more hospitals are beginning to offer this service.

Not sure why you aren't a candidate. I know I tried out, and I was told I wasn't a candidate. A few years later, I tried again and was deemed a candidate. Unfortunately, the fissure between my lower and upper lope permitted too much air, and when I awoke from the procedure, the doctor said he couldn't put the valves in.
In Boston, they staple the fissure and put the valves in. I am waiting till June. Might call Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. See if they can help you! God bless you.
