I feel like Eskil Rydarian in this days of quarantine. "I cant go to library to study because there is plague and the world is on fire. How inconvenient."
Sam Carter she is no where near that. She is the worst player sitting at the table. Both As marisha and keyleth. She needs to study druid more, her mistakes cost the group a lot, and honestly, as a druid she should be able to control the battlefield bit she fails to do that. Matt needs to sit with her and explain what a druid is capable of and what she can do to help the party.
Yeah except she's playing a young girl who is still learning HOW to be a Druid. Her mistakes actually end up being more in character for her than if she actually thought about them.
"This is how schindler did it by the way" Damn, that's dark. And I love how Sam's eyes go left and right in wonder right before he tells the joke. "Should I ? Prolly not. Let's do this."
@@joshhaworth2155 it was a well played moment. His character is wise but not very intelligent. He grasps complex concepts but explains them in a simplistic manner. He was loosely saying, creation requires destruction, under the cloak of role playing as Caduceus.
@@m.rachman1288 correct. Percy is smart not wise. However Percy only said the devil bit. Caduceus said the things need things to live bit. Cad is wise not smart. I didn’t set up that message well. Or this one frankly. Forgive the paraphrasing.

I love the idea of Percy being the father of invention and starts the planning of many of modern technology 100s of years in the future of their Universe. I felt it slipped slightly the past few episodes around the skull, it felt to much that Travis wanted to get the wish as opposed to exactly the way Grog would act in that situation.
@@Ginric99 Not at all actually. Matt actually summed it up when Vex did an insight check on Grog: He is a simple-minded individual that sees a simple solution to a complex problem. A non-intelligent character that just saw 4 dragons and barely left a mark after multiple attacks will come to a conclusion that a talking skull with a wish is indeed a lot better than crazy dragons.
I liked to think that was maybe the sword and skull starting to have an influence on him, as he did say he was the other "evil" member of the party, however the intelligence part did slip "up", if you will. Still fantastic play that I can only ever hope to reach :]
@DannyGirl percy honestly was pretty shady there too. Grog was trying to do the simple solution and didn't understand it was a bad choice. Percy understood it was a bad choice but didn't make it clear what his intent was. He does have a bit of a dark addiction.
2:59:03 "I never forget that when I rule, I rule these people as well." Beautiful and powerful line by Percy. It's crazy to see his transformation pre to post Brairwood arc. From a character that was just there in the background, to a full on leader amongst his peers.
Exactly. And no offense to Marisha, but her character tanked a deal that they've been setting up for two episodes with her ridiculously fluid morality. She picks fights with Paladins, sticks up for mind-flayers, and then this? I really, really don't understand her!
No hate, but all I ever see are people praising Marisha for her RP of Keyleth, but more often than not she just ends up a thorn in the side, and a passive aggressive one, at that. Quite obnoxious, in my opinion. It's nice to see that not everybody kisses her ass.
@@ZakEmber I've never liked Keyleth for this exact reason. She clearly thinks she is better than all these people. Both she and Vax I find to have this sense that their way is the only right way. Very holier than thou. Not even Pike is like that.
Laura: I like that we’re sending them to the place with the orb of death. NPC: What was that? Vex: I said you might be able to see your breath! Marisha: *High-pitched squeals* I love these knuckleheads.
Percy has gone from being practically a non-entity for me to being a solid and enjoyable character. Even when he's doing "wrong" I enjoy him because he plays it well. I'm not saying he wasn't important during the Kraghammer arc but he was kinda quiet and some of the other characters kinda... drowned him out. Matt talks in one of his videos about ways to bring a potentially shy player out of their shell by giving them the spotlight and I think he did that excellently with the Briarwood arc.
this is interesting perspective, because my immediate assumption was that Taliesin did that on purpose to show the difference in Percy before and after he got rid of the vengeance demon
I think he definitely tried to show a change in Percy as a result of getting shot of Orrthax but that was a relatively slow process. I mean just in the sense of... from the moment the Briarwoods are mentioned Tallesin starts playing Percy as being more of an instigator rather than a reactor and that fits perfectly with what Matt says about the subject in his tips video as well as... Tallesin did seem the least comfortable, initially, with doing the streams. I'm not saying he didn't want to do them or anything of the sort. Just that, of everyone, he seemed the most self-aware. Again, it all fits in so perfectly with that GM Tips video. And now Tallesin is undoubtedly one of the bolder role-players of the group. Well, that's not fair... they're all pretty bold now.
hes probably my least favourite character, the tongue extraction and facial scarring was the point of no return for his character imo, characters have defining moments and with that scene he failed and just became a tone deaf steampunk guy for me even after orthaxs defeat he acted like he knew what was best for everyone. In general i find he acts like a genius but just comes across as pretty stupid, more so than talisan intends. Take the death orb sling shot he had planned to fire at the dragon hah "i have ideas" lol sureeee you doo xD
@@instinct9672 Hmm, very different take then most people. A lot of people love "No Mercy" Percy, it's usually Keyleth on people's shit list. Not attacking any of your feelings towards either character, just thinking you have a very unique perspective.
I love Percy's rant at Keyleth near the end at 2:58:50. I think it's the first time we hear him get outspokenly mad at any of the group. Normally he's laid back making funny remarks but this is the first time he's not just fundamentally disagreed with a decision but vocalised how much he thinks it's a mistake.
And he did it so gracefully too. He accepted her decision in front of the Clasp as a show of solidarity and only told her how he disagreed once they were out of earshot. He kept his voice low and measured and didn't yell. And he didn't call her out for denying that she was playing holier-than-thou with them, which she absolutely was. It's ironic that she hated Kima because she ACTS like the types of overzealous hypocrite she was accusing Kima of being, with no evidence. She talked about the harm that can be done by people with righteous convictions and then does the same thing here.
Was a great speech, though gotta say, if I heard my ruler say he didn't think he was better than a literal den of thieves and murderers... I mean I wouldn't be thrilled. Keyleths come back shouldn't have been "I don't think I'm better meeeh :(". It should have been "NO Percy. Rulers SHOULD be better than gangsters."
I mean he was right. It should have come back and bit them in the ass later tbh. I so wanted them to take a proper tumble from that gigant ass horse they are on
@@Elaksomfan I'd say that they would have bitten in the ass much more if they had taken that deal. The residium from Whitestone is an extremely, extremely valuable and powerful material. On top of that, they would be responsible for starting a branch of the criminal underworld in the holy city of Vassalheim. The consequences for those two things are far-reaching. You can't keep selling the future for the present. Not that Keyleth is necessarily right in her stance, but neither is Percy.
@@infinityseven5924 Tal's just typically better at articulating his thoughts as Percy with snappy lines and confident delivery that sound good in the moment. While there's a thread of somewhat misanthropic logic in a lot of his arguments, there are frequently major problems with things he says that wouldn't hold up to real challenge. Especially when looked at from the big picture. But it's the Paul Atreides problem; the dangers of charismatic leaders and how easy it is to buy into them. Tal intentionally played Percy as an ends-justifies-the-means sociopath and I'm pretty certain Tal himself would be the first to tell you no one should actually be following Percy or his advice.
How Matthew Mercer can make so many sounds is beyond me. It's insane his vocal range for creatures, people, monsters... Unreal man. A man of superb talent.
And it's easy to picture him playing with action figures as a kid doing all the voices and sound effects as the battles rage on! I do love how everyone compliments him on it from time to time, and I love seeing him acknowledge that appreciation in his usual humble way.
Joe Auerbach I was thinking the same! I had to play it back to listen to it. His general monster noises are brilliant. Glad someone else here noticed and appreciated it 😊

I have literally watched the exchange at 45:08 more than a dozen times and it still makes me laugh. Matt's concerned peasant voice and the look on his face when he says "It's winter!" just kill me.
Keep in mind that Keyleth is not lawful good, even though she plays it that way. I think she's neutral good. (Maybe some major pre-stream events changed her outlook. I don't know.)
@@dowingba - Meh, alignment should be descriptive, not prescriptive, imho. She is the alignment of what she plays, and not the other way around - that's more like the earlier editions of DnD, 5e is quite lax in these areas. Still, I was on Percy's side, though I respect what Vax did, especially since it seemed this was his intention all along. What was annoying me was Keyleth trying to back him up in places where nothing should've been said, ruining his moments and the punchline, sometimes almost selfishly as if to dish out her own character traits. Sometimes I just can't stand her, even more than Tiberius in the earlier episodes.
Its moments like this one that make me roll my eyes at keyleth honestly lol. (Not marisha. Ik how sensitive people get towards keyleth. I dont hate marisha.) It always seems like she has her nose stuck up in the air as if she knows how the world works. Shes like those people who respond with "yeah well YOU KNOW HOW HORRIBLE MYYY DAY WAS" when they ask about your crappy day lol
I am just watching this for the first time, and I notice how many time Matt mentioned the Temple of Bahamut in Vasselheim, the one place where they should probably ask how to kill chromatic dragons, or at least find some allies to help in the fight. Matt is trully a master in storytelling, in general.
And that's the one place in Vasselheim none of them went to at the end of the episode. 😡 Sure as shit hope they don't treat the Sphinx like they treated Seeker Asuum.
3:34:38 ...you want to tell me... that Matthew Fucking Mercer... figured out TIMEZONES for Exandria as well??? This man terrifies me more and more with each episode of this arc, does this man even sleep
Just when you think you have Matt figured out, he goes and pulls out something like that and blows away your expectations. He went and figured out 1700s style ship combat purely because of Fjord's sailing background and wanted to be prepared for it. He mapped out*l *all* of Whitestone in the off chance that Vox Machina wanted to go somewhere random in the city. Matt's level of readiness is insane
Oh yes, Matt is insane, isn't he? Sometimes I DO wonder if that man sleeps at all, ever, or if he is just always up preparing something. Or does he just dream of his worldbuilding and preparation? Like, I wouldn't even think of timezones for this world, much less would I be able to just quickly figure out how that translate for these wildly teleporting travelers. Damn do I admire him for his worldbuilding...
Just want to take a moment to draw attention to how attentive Travis always is. For someone who essentially has very few choices in battle by comparison, you can see him get lost in Matt's descriptions while everyone else is talking with each other or rolling. It can actually be really sad sometimes when Matt's giving a description you can tell he worked hard on and everyone is distracted or goofing off
@@TraskTrojanek Tal is probably so experienced in tabletop games that he knows how to visualize the situation based on instinct alone, allowing him to divide his attention. Really fascinating how he manages to talk and goof but still catch the details.
Yeah the Clasp meeting had A LOT of good quotes, whether its Percy's devil comment, or calling out Keyleth's ego. Or even her rebuttal. But I can't help but be clued in on Scanlan's threat. "If we return and you've struck a deal with the dragons, you'll be the first to die; not them."
I love how all of their charities relate to their characters. Taliesin chose a charity that helps teens in tough situations, Percy was a teen in tough situations. Scanlan just found out he has a kid so Sam chose a pediatric organization. Keyleth is a druid, and Marisha chose an organization to conserve nature. Vax has been in a place he needed to leave before, so Liam is supporting space exploration so we can find new places to live. Vex had no one when she and Vax left their father, so now Laura is supporting a place for teens to get back on their feet. And Grog knows what it's like to be scared you're going to die in a strange and unfamiliar place, and of course he's a warrior, so Travis chose an organization that helps soldiers. Finally, Matt doesn't have a character, but he took his joy of creating a story that people love and chose a charity that shares stories for people who don't have it. I think this is just so profoundly beautiful :)
Sam should have adopted Red Dress Day, an organization supporting finding missing Native American females as an answer for Scanlan finding his daughter and wearing of a racially insensitive football team shirt. His continuous insensitive not jokes are old and not as funny as he thinks they are.
What part? I listen to this at work, I only open up the videos to see things in the wonderful time stamps that people post... otherwise I have to keep it minimized :(

not necessarily considering there is a cannon distinction between arcane and divine magic. Plus there are tons of clerics there i doubt they restrict their magic and druids draw from the same pool.
AncientSlugThrower I mean... considering the late Sovereign’s sordid history with Arcane magicks, and that Vassalheim is literally the “Things keep trying to kill us but we’re still here because we kill them harder and take proper precautions” sort of town, Tiberius just happens to fall into both precepts of “Chromatic dragonborn? Ugh” and “Arcane caster? You keep that mess out of my bar, you hear?” I mean, Scanlan and Keyleth both got in trouble the first time at the ring trying to manipulate the odds, it’s a fair thing to be highly skeptical of.
am I the only one starting to fear Matt's strange god ability to match in-game events to precise music changes? it's getting a little "phenomenal cosmic power" here ... just in this ep, 2:49:53, that music downturn matched his subtle facial change when Percy started making his counter-offer O.O
ugh, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the crescendos and dips and instrument changes INSIDE A SINGULAR SPECIFIC TRACK. NOT a track or mood change. seriously, did you not go look/listen at the timestamp I put? Matt's NPC has got a teensy hint of a smirk on, and then the music does a dramatic downshift EXACTLY when Percy says "Well I will not promise that now. What I can promise right now ... " and the NPC's smirk vanishes and becomes unhappy. Granted, Matt can hear the music and adjust his mannerisms accordingly, but the fact remains is that that SPECIFIC MOMENT IN THE TRACK just so happened to hit RIGHT when Percy makes that comment. That's not just "picking the mood music," that's bordering on composer-level "match the pace, tone, and movement of the music to the scene in the movie."
It's just coincidence. Much the same way you can cue up any music and a Kung-Fu movie and it will give the appearance of matching up. Or most albums and The Wizard of Oz
I mean that whole conversation about moving people out was gold. But when Sam made Schindler joke and Travis responded: “... and the room goes silent aaaand the mug comes up” I lost it.
"We were saying the terribly injured, the people with the worst injuries" "All right, those people first" "Yeah, 'cause they'll go through real fast" best quote of the night
3:09:09 "That wasn't the kind of ship I was hoping to get." LMAO Talisien was on a roll with his one-liners this episode but that one topped them all. And scanlan following with "I don't want to be alone tonight" to Vex kind of mellows out Vax's weird booty call.
I was 100% with Percy over the whole Clasp encounter. He was diplomatic and reasonable throughout, and as he said afterwards, they could have turned down the deal without making more enemies. Sheesh... Let the man skilled in diplomacy handle the negotiations, eh? He could have talked their way out of that if that was what the group agreed on, rather than it devolving into yet another problem. And calling his morals and motivations into question constantly for having made a deal in the past to avenge his family is patently unfair. He was fighting against the smoke demon even while possessed, and asked them to watch his back. Even under it's influence, he did his best to remain accountable. He deserves more trust that he's being shown. Just because he's skilled in politics, doesn't mean he's not their friend or that he doesn't have the group and Emon's best interests at heart. He's got a set of skills that can be very useful if they'd just let him actually use them.
I have to completely agree with this. Percy really didn't deserve how he was treated in this, and it was painful to watch. Finally a situation where his political skill set could be really useful, and he was essentially thrown under the buss. Why bother going to the meeting at all if the others felt that way about the Clasp? Not going for the meeting would have caused a lot less damage then the way things worked out. I can understand if Vax wants to cut his ties with the Clasp, but this wasn't the time or the place for that. Percy was trying to build a bridge, for the good of the survivors, and Keyleth and the others decided to burn it down as he was working on it. I love them all, but it was sort of heartbreaking how they threw his past in his face.
Argh, can not agree more. I detest how moralistic they try to behave and deny any shady option out of some potential concerns just because they don't want to have it on their conscience. It's a game people, just roll with it and deal with the consequences, it's more fun this way! This sentiment mostly goes to Keyleth and the twins, the rest are fine.

Finally working my way back through campaign 1. This episode actually highlights something about Vex, the root of her greed: poverty. She seeks to have, as if to amend years of not having. A not uncommon impulse. Like how someone who has starved will often take extra care to have ample food supplies from then on. She hoards because she has had nothing before. And has a deep fear of losing what she has again. Also you can visibly see Laura struggling with how bad trinket is in 5e compared to pathfinder when she first made vex and trinket. And how much love she actually has for her imaginary bear. Honestly I think cp4 should see laura playing a druid or someone with find familiar and/or find steed.
I could see her playing the absolute hell out of a paladin. She can role play with incredible conviction - whatever Oath path she picked would be awesome. One of the classes that no one has played fully only dipped a toe into with a 1-2 level multiclass. Plus, she could have a magical steed that can be resummoned if it goes down in battle, so no worries about needing to protect it.
+Albert Halliwel He does doesn't he? Many a times I think he makes her funnier, but still keeps it in the same place as Ashley. But when Ashley doesn't know what's going on it's just so freaking funny! I can imagine the phone calls between Matt and Ashley and her just laughing so much, and of course her watching the past shows most likely make her laugh even more.
"Can we find a dragon to kill the dragons?" "Metallic dragons don't get along with Chromatic". "Do we know any metallic dragons?" ...Well this exchange just got hilarious in hindsight.

She has her 'd'oh' moments, but honestly she's one of the better players/characters.

48:30 the biggest gut punch to me in the last few episodes,
Vex: "Child, where are your parents?"
Kid: "They haven't showed up yet."
Oh my God Travis plays dumb so well. It's not easy to make a character like Grog have character growth or depth and he does it beautifully.

Exactly. And no offense to Marisha, but her character tanked a deal that they've been setting up for two episodes with her ridiculously fluid morality. She picks fights with Paladins, sticks up for mind-flayers, and then this? I really, really don't understand her!

I haven't seen Matt's video, so I can't add anything, but I see your point and I'm inclined to believe :)
hes probably my least favourite character, the tongue extraction and facial scarring was the point of no return for his character imo, characters have defining moments and with that scene he failed and just became a tone deaf steampunk guy for me even after orthaxs defeat he acted like he knew what was best for everyone.
Idk he comes of a lil cringe at times, but I think I like him
Idk, I think Liam's far better at this than Sam
@@justadummy8076 I'm with you friend. I think Tal is just a weird dude, and I mean that in the best way possible, so sometimes it seems he's trying a little too hard. But when he has his roleplay and even combat moments they're so good imo that I can't help but love the dude anyway.
@@ThinkFunSolver i agree, though i love tal and his moments i notice he’s just an emo indoor kid trying to play a witty politician/nobility.
I have literally watched the exchange at 45:08 more than a dozen times and it still makes me laugh. Matt's concerned peasant voice and the look on his face when he says "It's winter!" just kill me.
Sams face in reaction to Keyleth letting Vax in to her room was priceless. To be followed up by Taliesins comment of ships. Perfection.
Percy: "I never forget that when I rule, I rule these people as well."
/Mic drop/ Seriously, though - THAT WAS SUCH AN AWESOME LINE
CalvinballAKA I was 100% on Percy’s side on that, but I understand how a sheltered Druid would want to avoid and not work with the shady, scary Clasp
Sometimes I just can't stand her, even more than Tiberius in the earlier episodes.
.... and that's why Keileth is crap
Its moments like this one that make me roll my eyes at keyleth honestly lol. (Not marisha. Ik how sensitive people get towards keyleth. I dont hate marisha.) It always seems like she has her nose stuck up in the air as if she knows how the world works. Shes like those people who respond with "yeah well YOU KNOW HOW HORRIBLE MYYY DAY WAS" when they ask about your crappy day lol
matt's improv as random npcs is so great! "it is winter!"

...you want to tell me... that Matthew Fucking Mercer... figured out TIMEZONES for Exandria as well???
Damn do I admire him for his worldbuilding...
i'm guessing he just made it up basically on the spot, still impressive on-the-fly thinking
Pretty sure he just made them up for plot devices since Exandria is flat
Matthew Mercer is not human
Just want to take a moment to draw attention to how attentive Travis always is. For someone who essentially has very few choices in battle by comparison, you can see him get lost in Matt's descriptions while everyone else is talking with each other or rolling.
It can actually be really sad sometimes when Matt's giving a description you can tell he worked hard on and everyone is distracted or goofing off
I agree completely, I think the 2nd campaign they got ALOT better about that. The RP has gotten better as well!
I'd actually say Tal and Marisha are the ones who goof off amongst themselves the most, but Tal does also seem to be more attentive than others
I love Travis!
The goofing off is really adorable though
@@TraskTrojanek Tal is probably so experienced in tabletop games that he knows how to visualize the situation based on instinct alone, allowing him to divide his attention. Really fascinating how he manages to talk and goof but still catch the details.

Liam who will later play Caleb: “Gingers man.”
Plus the way he looks at her then...
THIS.
i was looking for this comment and i’d like to add vax is an angsty pessimist nerd so he chose space bc the earth is dying 😅
some of that was kinda stretching a little bit
Sam should have adopted Red Dress Day, an organization supporting finding missing Native American females as an answer for Scanlan finding his daughter and wearing of a racially insensitive football team shirt. His continuous insensitive not jokes are old and not as funny as he thinks they are.

@@TheHighborn I disagree. Lawful evil at its worst are dictators that kill and impoversh millions. Chaotic evil at its worst is like a creepy serial killer. Lawful evil is worse by magnitudes.
@@Peter-hx3im tell that to Tharizdun.
@Ben Passlow Not what lawful means in D&D that is only a part of it. Remember you can be a thief and still be lawful good as long as you have a code of honor.
That moment when you realize Vasselheim's restriction on Arcane magic was a way to rein in Tiberius.
not necessarily considering there is a cannon distinction between arcane and divine magic. Plus there are tons of clerics there i doubt they restrict their magic and druids draw from the same pool.
AncientSlugThrower
I mean... considering the late Sovereign’s sordid history with Arcane magicks, and that Vassalheim is literally the “Things keep trying to kill us but we’re still here because we kill them harder and take proper precautions” sort of town, Tiberius just happens to fall into both precepts of “Chromatic dragonborn? Ugh” and “Arcane caster? You keep that mess out of my bar, you hear?”
I mean, Scanlan and Keyleth both got in trouble the first time at the ring trying to manipulate the odds, it’s a fair thing to be highly skeptical of.
"Good girls don't scry." / *collective groans* / "Just because you can doesn't mean you should." ~ Taliesin and Liam
Big girls, as in grown adults.
am I the only one starting to fear Matt's strange god ability to match in-game events to precise music changes? it's getting a little "phenomenal cosmic power" here ...
just in this ep, 2:49:53, that music downturn matched his subtle facial change when Percy started making his counter-offer O.O
Well he is the one changing the music.
but it wasn't a change in music track. it was an in-track composition shift. the music matched to suit HIM and the situation.
yeah he has said that he has all of his music separated by moods.
ugh, that's not what I'm talking about.
Any time friendly fire hits Scanlan, I die laughing because Sam's reactions to it are priceless
"But I'm just a little man."

my new favorite Percy line
3:09:09 "That wasn't the kind of ship I was hoping to get." LMAO Talisien was on a roll with his one-liners this episode but that one topped them all. And scanlan following with "I don't want to be alone tonight" to Vex kind of mellows out Vax's weird booty call.
Percy: "I hate to be the bearer of bad news"
Also Percy in the next scene: "I pull out Bad News."
Taliesin just wants to be a skypirate and it's my favorite thing
He’s nearly a goth version of Balthier from ff12 at this point. He’s even got the hot Druid girl pal.
That limerick was Vexcellent.
Well said I wholeheartedly agree.
Yes!!! God, I was SO MAD during that conversation. I had to turn it off. And I love these people and this show.
@@Lomniko being moral is fine the problem is them being inconsistent with it, vex keeps acting like she is a good person but is just selfish and greedy all the time and vax is a spineless enabler.
Ok but how funny would it have been if they had gone through with an incredibly elaborate airship heist, only for it to immediately be shot down by dragon fire...
I think it would have been the best because it's such an obvious flaw in the plan. The party wouldn't even be able to say Matt was being unfair since Laura brought it up immediately when Taliesin pitched it.
@@mingodingo yeah but Scanlan has greater invisibility he could probably use it on the ship.

"We can't make a deal with them, they're thieves!" when they literally broke into someone's house a few episodes ago to steal stuff. Okay.
before this laura even said 'scoundrels' when they saw looters, just after breaking into that house. just bad.
They were acting in official capacity based on information that there might be something wrong in the house.
Technically they were performing a wellness check. And the owner was decidedly unwell.
Or, you know, when they murdered a group of people who were probably regular citizens less than 24 hours prior and proceeded to loot them.
So many old ladies!
The volume of moral inconsistency in this episode is astronomical
