Everyone knows Rakshasa repel all oil, and synchronize there watches to attack in group during the same millisecond. That's on you, guys. Learn to D&D.
This is the first time they haven't slept in the mansion since Scanlan learned the spell... Matt's so vengeful XD.,. "i havent gotten to attack them in their sleep in ages..."
It honestly made me chuckle when Vax, waltzing naked through a hallway, was suddenly surprised by both his current and former love interest magically appearing in front of him.
Hey... So fake Shaun knocks... Gives him the robe he makes sure to rub ALL THE OILoff HIMSELF... from Grog's joke... Then sneaks off?? So why would Vax go sneaking off in the middle of the night in nothing but a silk robe unless they were boning (CR vernacular)? Scanlan either though so or knew too... And even says so under his breath when they were teasing him about knowing his first name!! They were all "how do you know" Scan says under his breath, "He's sleeping with him." And like rolls his eyes. THEY didn't hear him . But I caught it.. We all take comfort from where we can? Indeed!
The thing is he watches, he learns. He learned enough to get to Vax. Likely noticed the closeness of Gilmore and Vax and felt it was the right time to move. I mean who would think anything of a beloved friend when they are so tired.
I do quite a few celebrity impressions and one thing you learn when you make a hobby of that is the more expression and unique someone is, the easier it is to mimic them. So oddly enough, Gilmore is actually very easy to copy.
Rakshasas make it their business to not be seen. Seeing through Hotis' disguise would be like getting away with stealing from a living dragon with no consequences. It would take a very high perception to notice things that were wrong and Vax wasn't looking.
I'm not contradicting what you had said, I'm just genuinely interested. Don't you think that that would be true on a superficial level? Like, if they're very expressive, it would be easy to imitate them on a superficial level, but perhaps people who know them very well, and know the subtle mannerisms below the huge smiles and excessive handwaving would feel something's off?
He weighs 645 lbs, probably 20 times what Pike does even in her plate armour. She's 3 feet tall, he's 8'7''. The sheer disparity is hilarious to think about.

I thought for sure that it was going to turn out that Gilmore died back in the attack on Emon, and it's been the rakshasha this whole time. So glad it didn't turn out that way.
Ye...my heart dropped the last episode thinking oh shit it's jazz hands again D:....how long has he been Gilmore since the attack on Emon? After? I was so relieved that Allura said it takes them months to be able to come back after dying again...unless there's two but i'd be doing a hand check until it's for sure gone gone
I thought it was going to be some time between then and now. Like the Rakshasa has been here researching learning how to get to him and Gilmore is long dead. So glad it isn't what happened.
My prediction was only slightly more optimistic. I was thinking Hotis took the opportunity of chaos to kidnap Gilmore to learn more about Vax and that they’d have to go rescue him.
Liam: “does she have that beautiful morning hair?” Matt: “no her hair is perfect.” Liam: “of course it is. Fucking wizards.” Caleb: *literally doesn’t even bathe*
I love how Matt like.. picked up queues from how Will played Kashaw and is sort of doing an impression of Will acting out his character, it's very impressive how he maintains the amount of consistency that he does.
Gotta love Percy/Taliesin talent on naming things. Bad News? Good. Diplomacy? Sweet. And when you think it can't get any better, he comes up with Death From Above.
Only Scanlan has identify in his spell list since it is an Arcane spell. And do you see Sam Riegel doing anything the easy way? Besides it makes for a fun interaction with NPCs when they go see Gilmore or Allura. Or they don't identify it at all and end up with a cursed sword.
Kashaw is my favorite guest (with the possible exception of shale) just because I didn’t realize you could play a complete asshole of a character and have it work so well
@@SonjaPond That's true, but being a dick is still being a dick, it's a tightrope act to be this much of a blow off to everyone and somehow still be likeable.
"Assassins! Assassins in the west tower and the courtyard!... Jenga!" I love the pause and how done with everything Liam/Vax sounded when he said "Jenga". it had the same energy as "...shit"
I've just right now, reading your comment realised that (I'm pretty sure) Jenga has only been used three times. EVERY ONE of them is by poor old Vax!!! (Watching through for the first time) 😂 And it wasn't even a little bit his fault this time.
I kinda sympathize with Pike here...she's been doing this cleric thing for ages and Sarenrae never appeared, never answers divine intervention, and pretty much just made her presence known to smack Pike down temporarily for breaking a tenet. Vax does the paladin of the Raven Queen thing for about a day and the Raven Queen puts in a personal appearance. I'd be questioning my choices too :p
I just imagine that the Raven Queen having mortal origins is the biggest difference. She's probably more understanding of the life of her followers and more willing to provide direct contact
Beginning of the campaign: "Scanlan considers himself a lover first, a performer second, and fighter a distant third." Ep 58: Jumps off a tower and Leap-Of-Faith stabs a demonic tiger to save his friends life.
and the very fact that he has consistently shown the qualities you quoted throughout the campaign adds to the intensity of the scene because of how much of an exception this behavior was for scanlan. That's called amazing character work
To be fair, he also says that he will shed blood to protect his friends right after that part in the character intros. Well.. he says Pike specifically, but I just assume it's implied for all of Vox Machina as well lol.

Vax was planning on a multiclass to Paladin so it simply provided the Rp reasons why that was possible and reasonable. Liam was planning on turning to Sarenrae but with the character of Vax it really makes more sense for him to be a Paladin of the Raven Queen. Vax really was a black angel of death before turning to the Raven Queen, now he has a purpose to his sneaky murderous ways.
Just like how Vex's multi class into rogue was attributed to Vax rubbimg off on her. I love the way they as a group are able to use the story to make their decisions as players seem so natural. Like one of the episodes where Ashley was on Skype and Pike was astral projected to them and when Skype kept dying Matt reflected it in the story by Pike's/ Sarenrae's connection was weakened
@@the.genderless.sinner7271 liam mentions in an old All Work No Play podcast, Laura is all about rouges and she was furious that he made rouge so she had to go with something else like Ranger. But I bet that's why she subclasses into rouge
1:50:10 can we all just appreciate the look on Matt's face when he appeared as Gilmore in the tunnel seeing a naked Vax and realize that no one else there really got what was going on for the first bit, this dude is on his game at all times.
I love the way these guys are genuine friends with the way Liam was all, "no, do it the real way, I don't want any mulligans," when there was a rules understanding issue, and then once it was cleared up everything was just good. I've had too many games where a player disagreed with the rules and it became problematic.
I like the exploration of religion in this arc, especially through such varying perspectives. Pike, who's been faithful her whole life. Vax, who was 'three-quarters atheist', but now finds himself serving (and learning to trust) a goddess he's indebted to. And Keyleth, who has always thought of the gods as keeping their distance (unless petitioned by clerics etc.), but is having to re-evaluate that stance, since the Raven Queen is proving herself to be more 'involved' than previous deities she's encountered the followers of. And I'm glad Keyleth's clarifying somewhat that her worry over the Raven Queen business isn't really out of an anti-god sentiment. She just doesn't want Vax to lose all of his freedom and agency because of the deal he made, and I think that's a valid concern.
@@thegaspatthegateway yea to bad anyone IRL would think DnD is from the devil :D... the amount of people I have made angry by asking questions IRL and making them answer the tough questions is scary.
Eh Keyleth comes across as pretty anti any variation of diety consistently to me. Also seems like that is more of a player position than a character position - at least if I have understood her comments through the series correctly so far.
@@thegaspatthegateway It's good to look through any theme tbh. I usually write 2 characters with a basic theme such as "Love" or something, and have the second in direct opposition of views the other character has. Just to explore both sides.
I think it’s the sharing a birthday connection. 5 years isn’t really that much so it makes sense that they not only play the characters well but they also feel the same sibling connection in real life... they have said many times the reason they even thought of making siblings is because they figured out they share a birthday & the connection just grew from there.
2:58:57 After Vax getting wings and a wolf, Vex isn't even excited about the bow any more. It's heartbreaking. O great and Mercer-ful DM, let the Feywild journey bring her strength and confidence again.
I mean, vexes favored enemy and most hated enemy are dragons, and she acts just like them. Greedy, vain, jealous, etc! She’s become the very thing she’s sworn to destroy!! 😂
It just blows my mind how amazing a DM Matt is. The worldbuilding, the connections, the storywriting, the characterizations, the descriptions, the improvisation, the humor... even his skills at coming up with real fantasy names and creative magical objects and effects like those raven wings. Phenomenal.
Abelhawk Mercer is an icon in D&D for this very reason. Even DMs with 30 years experience advise newbies to never compare themselves to Mercer. Dude has talent, and he's had years to master his craft, and master it he did.
I really like how every hero of the group gets to have their own little adventure: Keyleyth's tribe, Grog's herd, Vax's Raven queen thing and so on. That is so cool.
When a dm is developing and helping flush out character they will sit down with the player and go over goals of the character what drives them etc, thus allowing for the dm to while conducting a larger narrative they can do such story arcs for development
I'm hoping the Feywild arc might finally be Vex's time to shine. Like she hasn't really had an arc yet and seems to take the backseat in most episodes, even the ones that seem to be about her mostly center around Vax which is cool, I love their dynamic but I'd really like to see Vex develop as a character and step out of Vax's shadow because despite having lots of potential she hardly ever gets any serious characterization and usually just supports everyone else in their arcs.
That can be the downside to being a sibling to fellow PC, I've seen it happen in campaigns before. Maybe they need to split them up again like Slayer's Take, that was the last time I really saw Vex come out of her shell.
That's a very good observation, the only two people who didn't have their "arcs", not even a little bit are Pike and Vex. In which Vex's case is rather annoying, your sibling gets chosen as the Champion of the Raven Queen and you have to sit through that, just for the purposes of supporting him, not getting any spotlight.
I thought Liam’s plan against the dragon to put an immovable rod inside him was brilliant (whether it worked as planned or not), but Talesin wanting to take Vax to the Ziggurat was an incredible quick solution. And forget the hat. Vex needs a Return of the Jedi speeder bike trooper hat with that broom.
@@madelyn1758 "Gilmore" sounded slightly deeper and had a subtle malicious undertone in his voice. I never noticed the first time I watched. Matt is a madman, pretending to be an NPC pretending to be another NPC, SO convincing that he almost broke everybody's hearts with a vengeful Gilmore.
also gave him different mannerisms. Gilmore to my recollection has never shortened the names of the twins. And he would never throw a gifted robe on the ground like that. I remember being instantly suspicious. He isn't even the sort of person who would "peek their head in" to a friend's room. He would ask to come in, and then burst forth in all of his grandiosity.
Matt..this was awesome!! Way to mix up the combat encounters man! Using Gilmore to initiate it too..Nicely done. I had wondered how the Rakshasa would make his comeback haha
13:14 Oh yeah, good point. And this is all before making him one-on-one fight a foe that it took four people to take down. And people say that Matt goes easy on his players... Dx
He allowed the players to hear Vax's warning when none of them except possibly Scanlan should have been able. Avoiding massive crit damage. He also made the cat's attacks weaker than its underlings so that Vax would survive. He doesn't "go easy", because its scripted it just seems that way.

Message is auditory (though only to the target). The spell you are thinking of is sending, which has infinite range, works through magical silence and such, and doesn't require speaking to broadcast, which are all things that the earrings do (which is why Matt came out and clarified that he had been incorrect when he initially said sending). I'm glad Scanlan finally decided to halt his pursuit of Pike. I think we all knew that it was never going to go anywhere and I loved that Scanlan realized that he wasn't in love with her, but simply the idea of a woman like her. Vax and Gilmore is one of the most beautiful, cinematic and endearing love stories of all time. I've never seen something non-canon be so canon before.
I love how they have planned to go to this entirely different plane for several days now... then spent the last few days in their home plane drinking and only when they are about to leave it occurs to them that they should probably find out some more about this plane
that's a part of the "how to college 101" guide book. its elementary. get assignments, release and still time for 5 months the remember it one week before you have to give it rush it like a madman complaining how you didn't have enough time. and also to be honest they asked the same people before, at the dinner. they where just re-checking
for the curious, i think matt asked what vex's alignment was because rakshasas have a damage vulnerability: piercing damage dealt by good creatures using magical weapons.
@@TheThreeHeadedDragon I think it's specifically projectiles Edit: actually no you're right, any magic weapon that does piercing and is wielded by a good creature
Matt: “here’s a magical robe that cannot be removed without your skin coming off. It will flay you alive. A robe of flaying. Vax is in pain every time you try to-“ VM: “lets go to the magic-removing room” Matt: 👁👄👁
That's always seems to be one of Matt's flaws as a DM. He doesn't think about all the magical things he is potentially giving them access too that don't need to be attuned, which makes the game far easier. He gets surprised and impressed too easily about things that take like 3 seconds to think of to get around his plans to make things like the robe into a big problem, and turn them into an easy solution. I do love their gameplay, but I watch and see the players getting angry at Matt, saying he's trying to kill them, but he makes the game so easy compared to most DM's I know in real life.
@@NatasLeviathan As often as these guys completely miss obvious solutions, I think it's less Matt not planning for it and more them actually remembering something for once lol

It should have been easy to see through Hotis' disguise. Even the most powerful magic in the world can't make you as glorious as the true Gilmore.
True

I thought it was going to be some time between then and now. Like the Rakshasa has been here researching learning how to get to him and Gilmore is long dead. So glad it isn't what happened.
My prediction was only slightly more optimistic. I was thinking Hotis took the opportunity of chaos to kidnap Gilmore to learn more about Vax and that they’d have to go rescue him.

Surely, Laura and Ashley both saying they're going to "grapple that dick", is worthy of note @ 1:29:16
Caleb says thank you.
You're a god-send.
"I just spilled on my groin. I don't know why i said that out loud" Even his inside voice is nice a and somewhat narrative.
And usually in a funny accent 🤣
Pike to Keyleth: You should get comfortable with Vax. I think he really fancies you.
Matt & Liam: *drinking from the cup*
I can hear Matt’s evil cackling laugh through time as he came up with the idea for the rakshasa to turn into Gilmore the next time they met
I love their faces (48:30), when Taliesin says he's doing action surge, going murderous on these guys, but to be fair, my man's gotta have some bad PTSD from being attacked in that very castle at night. He's probably not going very well at the moment.
It helps that he knew their Cleric was *grievously* wounded, and would be dead by the next turn.
I know I'm late to the party, but Travis helping Ashley count when she attacks really warms my hearth
And when Travis stops counting after the 6th roll thinking that was all is pretty funny, considering that it's the exact number Grog can count to. :D
It's important to have a warm Hearth it keeps you warm in the winter
An entire character arc was shaped around one desperate plea, induced by one careless blunder.
Robert Bourbon
Which is why DnD is so amazing
Because both Matt as a DM and Liam as a player are both amazing
Honestly one of the best parts of this episode
I love the way these guys are genuine friends with the way Liam was all, "no, do it the real way, I don't want any mulligans," when there was a rules understanding issue, and then once it was cleared up everything was just good. I've had too many games where a player disagreed with the rules and it became problematic.
I think they all learned from Mr "Well then I don't do any of that" who mysteriously disappears around episode 28
DnD seems like a really good platform to explore spiritual themes and conversations, that is, since the irl world tends to have baggage regarding that
@@thegaspatthegateway yea to bad anyone IRL would think DnD is from the devil :D... the amount of people I have made angry by asking questions IRL and making them answer the tough questions is scary.
A Lawful Neutral deity that broods in a mystery-type persona and actively talks of fate and destiny, yeah that's pretty fair point to be cautious of.

I wonder how long Matt was planning on springing the Rakhshahshshsa on the party but just couldn’t do it because of the Scansion.
When Vax was like "What did we talk about in the tavern?" I was like "Vax, for future reference, in bird culture, that's considered a dick move."
he broke Gils heart a second time, and mine with it because they had such a chaos couple energy!
Sometimes it is hard to remember that Laura and Liam are not siblings.
nodeterin RIGHT they play siblings so well, their bickering is amazing and their heartfelt moments are really sweet
They have to be related somehow. Cousins at the very least.
Josh They do share a birthday and technically everyone’s slightly related if you go back far enough
I think it’s the sharing a birthday connection. 5 years isn’t really that much so it makes sense that they not only play the characters well but they also feel the same sibling connection in real life... they have said many times the reason they even thought of making siblings is because they figured out they share a birthday & the connection just grew from there.
@@josh6550 nah, both of them are just really great voice actors. Liam directs VO's and Laura is among one of the best in VO's.
My favorite moment of this episode is Percy forcing a skill check for Keyleth juggling because of how long he had to practice to get it down
2:58:57 After Vax getting wings and a wolf, Vex isn't even excited about the bow any more. It's heartbreaking.
O great and Mercer-ful DM, let the Feywild journey bring her strength and confidence again.
Yeah, that kind of fucking sucks for her at that time
It's karma to me, she stole from a team mate and had little remorse. Also having a pet isn't exclusive for anyone. Jealousy is an ugly beast
Given her greed, she needs to be knocked down. She wants everything
Agreed with all statements in this section strongly
Matt Mercer for Dungeon Grand Maaster!
I really like how every hero of the group gets to have their own little adventure: Keyleyth's tribe, Grog's herd, Vax's Raven queen thing and so on. That is so cool.
And of course the first, Percy vs Briarwoods.
@@kjj26k even before the campaign was livestreamed tiberius had a personal quest to collect magical items and return to draconia

Vex has a very flat, boring personality anyway
Wesley Pipes I will have to disagree with that sir.

Matt actually did use a different voice for the disguised Rakshasa. Amazing.

@@erby3027 if you go back and listen to both gilmore's and "gilmore's" voices they sound completely different ;)
I noticed that too, but I kept thinking it was him not playing Gilmore for a little bit. I should know better by now
Matt..this was awesome!! Way to mix up the combat encounters man! Using Gilmore to initiate it too..Nicely done. I had wondered how the Rakshasa would make his comeback haha
I like how Vex is slowly multiclassing into a witch
13:14 Oh yeah, good point. So not only did Matt blindside Liam with having an enemy put on the guise of a close friend to get in a cheap shot, he first waited until Vax was already without any equipment and also made sure he had nothing to fight back with with that whole robe trick.

@@bettystroh6504 Every part of this post is wrong.
You're lying about your earrings (or else have been insanely lucky). And the earrings in the show are large dangling earrings that serve as the target for a message spell and then treats the wearer as being part of the target. Message is auditory (though only to the target).
The spell you are thinking of is sending, which has infinite range, works through magical silence and such, and doesn't require speaking to broadcast, which are all things that the earrings do (which is why Matt came out and clarified that he had been incorrect when he initially said sending).
Because it is message, you need to be awake to hear it and you need to be wearing the earring, unless the earring vocalises it in which case then you'd still need to be awake.
