What better way to celebrate a birthday than to go flying with a friend, go beach hopping on some remote Alaska beaches, and commit some aviation together? You're right, there isn't a better way.
Rob and I do just that, flying in his Piper Pacer out of Homer, Alaska as we visit some beaches on the Pacific side of our nearby mountains. Rob is an aircraft mechanic that works in the arctic circle in the summer, and lives in my town in the winter.
He dubs himself "Bush Pilot in Training" which is a perfect name. Before he even got his private pilot license (PPL) he bought and 1954 Piper Pacer, which can be turned into a nice performing airplane for STOL (short takeoff landing).
At first we weren't sure if we were going to be able to reach our destination because of some clouds that were in the way. We found a way to get down through the overcast layer.
Immediately we started to see the coastline, and even wild black bears that were everywhere. In all, we counted somewhere near a couple dozen. Flying low and weaving in and out of little canyons, we could see many of them eating coastal grass in the marshes and meadows.
We landed the airplane on a couple tidal areas. You have to be careful, because if the tide comes in then you can get stuck, and under water.
Eventually we'd end up at a beach where you can find Japanese garbage, and other treasures that have been floating in the ocean. We did find a couple of things, including the miles of driftwood on shore.
Flying with a friend in a situation like this is just so cool. To be able to share in the joy of aviation and go somewhere really unique in Alaska. There's just nothing like it.

What a fantastic video so far! So good to see this with General Aviation!!
@@StudentPilot4EverLearning Yeah man! It's a blast and I enjoy sharing.
As you sat on the beach peacefully, self-reflecting, I was expecting at any moment Rob would come running out of the trees hollering, “Bears! We’ve gotta go now!!!”
Bahahaha. Not sure how many alaskans would do that. We know better.
That "CLEAAAAAR!!!!!" makes me laugh every time.
It lightens the mood.
Agreed. I got a laugh out of it too and then when his friend Rob started laughing at it; it made me laugh more. GREAT STUFF!!
Dude at 35 I was still trying to find out where my career was going. I am glad you found your calling.
Super super blessed with that. No doubt.
Haha, I think I had my ppl for 2 years at age 35 😂
Flying is the ultimate freedom. I love it.
The moment you opened and drank the Pepsi is the moment I subscribed. My kind of dorks here.
Love to see Rob on the channel. What a way to soak up what life has to offer. 250 hours and locked in the zone landing at miscellaneous beaches, but also clearly happy and goofy. I want to live my life the way Rob does. Also THANK YOU for catching some bears on camera Chris. I was dying to see them!
Wish we could have seen them closer!
Rob is the man! love what hes doing with the pinto
Me too!
I turn 73 this year, and those little spots on the earth that give you peace and introspection are priceless. Another great video, thanks.
Yes. It's what matters. Make sure to subscribe!
Clear prop in the middle of nowhere gave me the giggles, most importantly, I was touched by the gratitude and the hope in your message.
Thanks.
This is why I want to become a pilot. Exploring Alaska/Canada on a motorcycle has been amazing. But there is so much more...
You’ve already lived a full life of adventure at 35 that many of us aspire to live in a lifetime! Thanks for the inspiration Chris!
It’s so true. I count myself blessed every day.
That was probably one of the most fun bush pilot videos I’ve seen. Rob, is nuts, the world needs more people like him. So glad you had a great birthday. I had my birthday recently, and spent it flying with buddies (three aircraft, six pilots) can’t beat it, thanks for sharing
Dude, love that pause for gratitude. And what a spot!! Happy birthday Chris!
The Happiest of Birthday Wishes go out to you and your family! Thank you for doing what you do!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Happy birthday(3 years later) so happy 38th.
Great video, fantastic way to spend a birthday.
You both seem like very sensible and safe pilots.
Hello from Australia.
I love this guy!! Love seeing you go flying with Rob.
Rob is hilarious.
I love that you have lived there and flown there for a WHILE and you still are amazed at the wildlife and beauty like you just moved there!
What a lucky guy you are to fly over such gorgeous wild landscapes. You've got a great Birthday present !
Happy birthday! It's always a good time watching your videos. The most important part of the video was you sitting on the beach by yourself. It gives you the chance to acknowledge and appreciate what is truly important in life! And to be able to share a day like that with a friend is really what life is all about! I'm 54, starting all over again and considering certified in air craft maintenance while pursuing my PPL. Wish me luck!
SOOO much fun!!! My first view of this birthday trip. AWESOME!!!!
That is exactly why I am busy with my pilot license. Great experiences. Thanks for sharing :)
It’s one big adventure!
Great video, well done! For 10 years I called this area my playground too. Funnest and most beautiful place in Alaska to fly for sure! :)
Finally! A pilot who wears a helmet!
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY CHRIS! Sure looked like fun. Thanks for taking us along!
Happy Birthday! Awesome! episode. Full of life. Lots to be thankful for ...for sure!
Happy Birthday Sir, you and ya friend have a blast , Alaska is beautiful
Happy birthday! Thanks for sharing.
Well Done! I so enjoyed this video. Having lived in Alaska twice before I know from experience how wonderful and magical a place it is! I will be moving back up for good this coming spring. Once it gets into your bones, you're hooked. Thank you for taking us along n your fantastic outing. As pilots, we know just how fantastic Alaska really is. Keep these great videos coming. They are truly appreciated!
Love your videos, this is what flying Is all about, so much fun getting into those remote areas. and I especially love the piece of wisdom at the end of each of the videos, so inspiring.
You two are Heroes!
Happy Be-lated Birthday! Agreed: A little bit of altitude can provide some much needed perspective. Thanks for sharing this awesome vid!
You bet!
that was CLEAR-ly awesome fun, even watching from my couch, now I want a Piper PA-20 Pacer!
good video! Thanks. I spent a year 1965, at Fairbanks, 12th Aviation Company and started flying at our flying club, I worked on, Otters, Beavers, and Bird dogs. Went to Army flight school as a Huey pilot and maintenance for 7 yrs. 2 yrs. VN. Always loved Alaska.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!! Great story....
Wish I had a flying buddy like Rob! Probably your best video yet. Happy birthday!
Thanks! Trying to do a lot like this.
Fantastic Video. Great flying. Thank you so much.
The clear yell is great. 👍🇨🇦
What a wondrous experience. I'm sitting here in Jakarta, 10 time zones away, thinking about that lovely 'low-&-slow' flying adventure. Aircraft is ancient. Imagine taking a long road trip through the wildernerness in a 1954-era auto. Unnerving - even without bears.
Getting out into the middle of nowhere it's exactly why I want to pursue my balance license. Videos like this are excellent inspiration to keep me going.
That was the coolest thing I've ever seen.. what a awesome birthday!!
Rob, don't go giving away our duck hunt camp. lol
Your videos make me realize that I have a smile on my face and it's been awhile since I've realized I've had a smile on my face.
Miiiiiiight be the best comment ever.
Good to see an adventure on your birthday. Awesome.
Yeah buddy!
I thought I recognized Rob from the Bettles trip! Glad to see you guys keeping in touch and enjoying friendships made through aviation.
I try and keep my friends. Haha. He’s awesome.
Brilliant episode well done.
Happy Birthday ...!
@AngleofAttack. From one Alaskan (Fairbanks) to another, thank you for sharing your birthday experience!!!! We Alaskans are the best!!!

Congratulations. 35?! I am about 54, still taking my PPL and still dreaming showing up and fly with you guys. Definately Bush Pilot is my thing. Take care.
You can trust that the bears won't hurt you. The rifle under the wing screams "trust but verify"...
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
What an AWESOME birthday!! So jelly!!
It was awesome.
What an awesome video, thank you both for taking us along! Beach hopping birthday, I love it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great vid and music guys! Cheers and blue skies from The Flight Level!
Happy Birthday!
Fun to watch for this old bush pilot in NC with a BC12-D and 65 hp. I never got to go to Alaska, always wanted to, dreamed about it, and now too old. So I got to go and be with you two adventurers, vicariously. My favorite short-field landings were in WV, usually mountaintop airports, where if you went off the end, you'd have a thousand-foot, or more, drop off and plenty of old wreckage down there. We also have wing-'n'-a-prayer air strips here in WNC and East Tennessee. Them wuz the days!
With a few days delay,Happy Birthday! You're living my GA dreams, more power to you.
Thanks! Happy to share the dream.
Awesome Rob!!!
Make sure to subscribe!
Happy belated birthday!! Looks like it was a good one.
Happy birthday young man!!
This is one of the reasons Im starting my PPL next year! ;)
🙂 Happy 🙂 belated 35th 🎂 Birthday 🎂 Chris.
Awesome thanks Chris. So awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Happy birthday Chris!!!
Thanks!
Happy birthday Chris!
It's good to sit quietly and reflect! I'll be 36 next month. Looking forward to getting my pilots license so I can adventure and find a quiet place to do the same 😁
I highly recommend it!
Those rifle cases strapped to the struts are just the height of silliness. As if there wasn't enough room left in the airplane. Trade off a few know for ”ooh, look at me, I got a big gun!"
Have you no joy in life?
Ever loaded up a pacer for two hunters gear food and fuel for a two week long hunt 1000 miles from home? Ya, I need all the extra room I can get
I hope to get up there and see that in person! 😍
give me a call when you do.
I love Pacers so much.
Woah ! Amazing footage! Beautiful places and amazing flying experience, well done ! and happy birthday ***
That’s much!
gotta love the rifle on the struts
Pure Alaska.
