I got the socket boss and like it a lot. The 1/4" twist lock is a little weak but the 3/8 and 1/2 are stout. I like two things about them. First is that they allow for close packing of the sockets along the rails. Much closer than I found on any other stand-up system which has let me make better use of my space. Second, you can mix and match drive sizes right next to each other along the rail. My torx and other bit drivers go from 1/2" to 1/4" drive and I can line them all up in one neat line. Very impressed so far.
And ANOTHER comment (Im commenting as I watch, Im on break from doing my box lol). So, for extensions, theres an Erst extension boss that actually works surprisingly well.
Also, something I used in the past, are battery packages. The large 24, 30, 60 packs have this plastic piece in packages that layer the AAs and AAAs like in a theatre. Cut EVA foam, and place those plastic bits inside the cutout and it looks remarkably sharp and neat.
I got the ernst socket boss and love the whole concept. My tool collection has grown really quickly since I began buying everything and just ordered the Matco Tool Grid and very excited to get that put in and organized and I'll have open trays to refill as I buy the rest of the socket sets I need. The MAC metal trays are the very best I've seen available and the most heavy duty available. Appreciate you not acting as if your not sponsored in this video like everyone else on YT. I hope to do the same thing in the near future once I am prepared to start channel.

That’s awesome my first dirt bike was a YZ80 as well . I think mine was an 82 or 83 … absolutely loved it !!!!!!
I've had the Hansen trays for at least 10 years and only broke a few pins by dropping large items on them from above. Totally my fault and easily preventable. Only 3 pins total between my 1/4 and 3/8 pieces. They are far sturdier than you might think. Also, when loaded, they are super easy to pick up and move. I swap them in and out of my large box and mechanics cart regularly. With the upside down socket fitting tight around the bigger base, they don't move at all. The Westlings are pretty, but you cannot move them without spilling deep sockets off of them. They need magnets.
Thank you for turning me onto the Westling Machine socket organizers. They are more expensive than I would like but are the only socket organizers that I have found that are exactly what I want. No pegs, no twist lock, stable fitment, sockets face up, no holes in the base and an easy to clean surface for the inevitable oily sockets that go home dirty, Those look amazing for my new box, but I'll have to twiddle my thumbs for a bit before I can buy enough of those to organize all my sockets.

All you gotta do for sockets is get 3 different size long skinny piece of steel then cut em to size for deep or small sockets and tac them to the bottom of the box where ya want em. Then spray paint it so it don't rust. Then if ya want get a thin piece of foam and fit it to the drawer and over the custom pegs and use electrical tape and the base of the peg to get the sockets snug if y want
On the quarter inch Hanson trays I you can always clip the pegs to a point were they'll hold the sockets but not have the pegs break off if you were wanting too

Just thought I'd chime in on the durability of the Hansen racks.....I've been using the same set of Hansen socket racks for 13 years as a flat rate tech at a dealership and I've never had a peg break.

A good way to store your extensions are to take a magnetic pad and lay them on that
Ernst socket boss rails are actually great. I've had them for years and have no complaints. You can add additional pins or remove them and they make ratchet clips and extension clips for the sides of the trays. They also have labels so you can easily find what your looking for.
Thanks loved your motorcycle stories, I have done that before spent $50.00 for a bike put $500.00 into it when it was all done it was worth $100.00 this was a Tohatsu in the early 70s. But it was really a good experience got to meet a lot of people and taught be life lessons, looking back it was really worth it. I did all the wreaching on it make lots of mistakes, things that you have to experience and can't learn in a book, way before RUclips.
My fist was a 2003 Klx125 in 2002 then a 1999 Cr80 then Cr85 brand new in 04, then a KTM Sx125, shoutout to DFW KTM! Then TTr 125 pit bike then a 2005 Yz250f, then a 06 Crf250r, an I still have as well as my new KX450!
I certainly appreciate the machining and look of the aluminum organizers but for the money, the plastic trays with pins are super solid. I also personally don’t care for the twist lock organizers. What I really prefer to do, when possible, is remove the lids of the blow mold cases that most sockets come in and use those. They are generally pretty low profile once the lid is removed. Most can be cut off or hinge pins removed. Soooo many options really. Hard to pin point the best method. Seems like it always comes down to $$$$ on what ya choose to do. Thanks for the video.
For $6 at harbor freight I got 3 socket trays. 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2. $12 for both metric and standard. Got some screw driver organizers for $3. And a bunch of wrench organizers for $7. You don't need to pay an arm and a leg for such a basic product. Hell for $3 you can go and cut some foam board out to custom fit your sockets, ratchets, and wrenches.
Mikey Roberts - yeah, HFT’s socket trays are a lot cheaper than the Hansens, and are of equal quality, in my opinion. Heck, I think they may even be made by the same manufacturer?

Great comparison. There is always compromise. Most socket racks take too much space IMO. Ppl with huge boxes that they can’t fill have no issue. I like the Ernst racks as you can push the sockets closer together but they click so the sockets don’t bunch up on their own. I have taken a rack of impacts out to go out to the drive and do some suspension work, etc. I also like that you can mount many extensions and ratchets where you want them on the racks. They appear limited at first until you realize any other type is generally fixed rather than modular so is more limited. I like the Ernst wrench racks. The carry type are limited in number whereas the rails(that move) are frustrating. I might imbed neo magnets or rivet an aluminum cross piece that keeps the rails from moving. I think a little fab is indicated to make these things work for our tastes as there are so many opinions.

I've used kaizen foam and cut it to size for various applications. Works really well for space efficiency as you can choose your own layout.
I'll look into that. What is the best way to cut foam? We have an intern over here at work and he has been routing it out, which is super messy.
It's not too difficult to trace around each tool and cut the foam to size with a utility knife/box cutter. It cuts nice and easy and since it's constructed in layers you can peel up as few or as many layers as you want for a specific mounting depth. Fine-tuning your cuts is probably the most time consuming part, but even that's not too bad. Start with a snug fit - you can always take more material out but can't add more back in if you cut too much. I also make little cutouts for a finger or two to grab the tool out of the foam more easily.

Find someone local with a laser cutter, nothing else will cut it as clean or precise. Many local community collages have them and will let the public use them.

For extensions I use an old school socket holder. A metal one with metal clips. Have all 3 size clips on it, lay down and attach extensions to it.
The westling machines look super nice! Looked them up. $120 for the set of 8! That’s not to bad for what you get!
They are nice for sure. I need to buy a few more for my hex socket bits.
The blue and black socket tray I used to have one from a brand called expert and I used all their sockets from half inch all the way down to quarter in deep shallow and medium shallowness wish I still had them

For extensions looks up the magnetic socket rails. Then you can line them up the way you have them now but they won’t move.

The wrench rails won't move if you rip some 1/4 ply & screw them to it. (what the holes on the sides were probably for). I like your idea though about reversing the angle so the opposing small->big big->small wrenches show in the same direction. I've been thinking of making my own rails on the table saw, but I didn't think to reverse the degree of the cut for the 2nd row. Should be pretty easy actually.. Thanks for the idea!

Ive had the Hansen trays for a few years, that was the latest and greatest at the time I guess. An improvement to the old clip style. But after seeing this, I might have to change up, those new ones look like they will save some space
I got muscle memory built up so much after using my tools to the point where I can reach into any draw or box and get the tool I want with out looking, and that's only after couple of months. When I get new tools it takes couple of weeks to get used to the location of them, but once I used the tools enough I can get it right every single time.
Oh man the VIM rails are my favorite, helped organize all my 1/4 sockets. I understand plastic trays are nice and labeled, but they have such a foot print! So many socket rails I’ve seen never come to the versatility and profile of the VIM MagRails. A lot of the sockets I’ve set up I’ve mostly organized from left to right from largest to smallest. I removed pegs in certain spots to just clump frequently used sockets together. I’ve even used them plain with no pegs as a magnetic land to park ratchet handles, keeps them from sliding.
Odd, all the sets I purchased didn’t come with a pull key, I guess yours are a later release, and boy are they appropriately stubborn to remove. While the VIM MagRail might bite your finger tips trying to lift it off, at least your drawer wount shuffle around whenever you move about the garage!
They are pricey, that I agree, but less chunky than a twist-n-lock from Snap-On and a smaller foot print, and space is always a premium in tool box storage!

I tend to take several sockets/wrench’s to the vehicle so my socket sets need to be carried away from the box to my work area.

Use The Twist & Lock for the Extensions
If you purchased the US General box you would have 754.35 to spend on additional tool organizers and still be ahead of game.
I like this box better.
The problem with empty spots is people with ocd have to fill those slots. I know when I bought my 27 mm socks and 1 3/16 because I had a slot for them. Question is will I ever use it. I know this at least I have for that one time in the future

I just saw this now, and I would NOT recommend using the rubber band. I did that, and guess what happened lol....
The rubber band got old, and broke, and then got the pliers sprung up and jammed. That was a PAIN to get everything out without destroying either box, pliers or rack. Luckily it was towards the back, and I could open the drawer a bit and sneak my hand and walk the plliers until they were out of the rack and fell flat. It was not easy at all. Maybe a metal S slip like a carabeener? I have a Channellock C clip plier and I just remove the spring. Vampire Tools has some spring loaded pliers that I got lucky that they barely fit, but if they didnt, I would just bite the bullet and find a place to lay those flat.
It REALLY sucks getting things stuck in a box. The worst for me were these imflatable wedges (for getting into locked out cars, pulling the glass frame apart, with the blood pressure cuff kind of bulb pump). Well, as I opened the drawer, it squeezed the bulb, and inflated the bladder, and the first one to inflate pressed down on the second bulb of the other bladder, and they all got bigger and jammed even more. Again, bashed knuckles later, I was able to push the vent button (I had to do all of them at once), and squeeze the air out. Ugh...learned from that mistake lol.
The fix that I had for the 1/2 inch socket I have put my really long extensions behind that plastic rail the same as yours

Main reason I had to comment. What you call an "upside down" socket. I'd call the right way up. Surely it's easier to attach to your ratchet when you pick it up by the end that doesn't attach to the ratchet.

I feel so sorry for my peers in America. I have spent a lot on my tools and don't complain that I do. But you guys get shafted by the car companies there and the tool makers who make you buy 2 or 3 of everything. I've been working on cars* now for 20+ years. Only time I've ever used anything other than metric was on a restoration I did with a friend on a 60 year old British classic. Needless to say I didn't buy snapon sockets and spanners to do this!
*Sometimes bikes and trucks (which you chaps call something else I can't remember the name of, when I say truck I mean 40+ tonnes that delivers goods in a commercial manner...)

yea they are a handful 104 and 107 this year they did only given they license up they still live on the farm they milk 4 cows each day have pigs and chicken too they port in a big garden every year too they can not wait to get the seed catalogs to order seeds when the young couple came to the door they were very scared income to us and the warning we have on the fence too we did explain why there where here, asking for our help we did think it was awesome for them to look for help as to a protecting they needed our help with another farmer at having been scaring them we bought a potato farm lol they are and awesome people they work hard too yes we leave them to do the thing too yea the other farmers saw our signs on the farm they lift them alone they came knotting on our property they got caught they got a beating of their life and drop off on the driveway afterward they did call the police they did came out to talk to me willing to be arested as long as them 4 were to and willing to go to jail as way taken the police to crime they were doing and there pick truck was there with the parts still there it is up to the 4 week later the tractor was pick up and week later it was retaken to use all back to there they never asked for the truck back still have it
it is the truck and will to give it back to the spring some of the did stope in peace they were more scared of me they want to know if they cam buy bees from me lol they willing to pay for it too I am not here to beat them from behave bees yes I did sell them bees did ask them about that truck it theirs and the person can have it back too him mailed me the bill of sale to me and the other keys did send it back and said it his truck to have
it still here did found out why it has not got pick up the police said they all arrest them for trespassing on the properties did said i will to take it there for them to store them self to said NO it will sit here for a long time found out can charge for storage

Keep that twist lock tray for on the go storage, and on the screw driver thing you set it up one of the fat spaced sections is distanced for your shorter drivers, and the other the long ones. Cut you a square of sheet metal that's the dimensions of foot print of the holders, and stick them to it, and lay that in the drawer.
Good tips, however I already returned all the items you mentioned.

Modify wrench racks for your ratchet extensions
4 years after this comparison, what have finally settled on? I see a problem with the billets, when you have each as you do, . It looks like you need more space for your fingers to grab the socket you want Looks like you need to run two side by side instead of behind each other, because the deep sockets blocks the next row Plus the size markings are blocked.
I need an insert for a drawer for ingersoll ran 1/2 &3/4" impacts with a 1/4' , a large and a smaller 1/2 "milwaukee impacts.
Go north south instead of east west in your top drawer.

Now I want those Westlings lol, after I JUST did my socket drawer. I plan on doing a vid on organizing too, although I come from an aviation background and have a bit of OCD with positive inventory, with each tool having its own spot.
You might think foam, shadow liner, home made EVA foam...yeah, I did that, until I got into cars, and buying one single tool meant a week of cutting foam. And if a tool broke, and Snapon changed the handles (looking at you comfort grip screw drivers) then you have more cutting to do. Hurray (sarcasm..I hate cutting foam with a passion!)
So, I used pretty much everything you have, except the Westling (which would have worked so nice with my Matco, since my handles are red anodized). The goal is to have a setup that allows either growth (for new and journeyman, craftsman tech) as well as changes for master techs etc. This has been something Ive been mulling over for a while and I think I have a solution that works for me at least (or so I hope...time will tell. I may have made a mistake with the yoga mats as shelf liners. They really break up easy compared to EVA foam liners)
Anyway, cool vid. And I loved the photo part. Its funny because I just came across photos of my fathers first pro tool box, which I found after 30 years. Yeah, big coincidence. Same box, not one like it, and it was kept so clean that it looks brand new, a 50th anniversary edication Mac, along with photos of my father when he bought it, and one cool photo of him, the toolbox, and a brand new Ferrari 348 Spider (not his..I wish, just a car he worked on)

I like your video but if you ever really used any of your tools as clean as they are then basically you won't have time to organize them even if you do think you have time because work don't stop if you are committed to Motocross you should have your T handles as well to tighten up your bolts and screws I do like your video just saying it's good to have an organized shop but it don't stay organized and that's the trick I'd like to find out!

@@HTMR I like using between motor to snug certain bolts an fast changing a airfilter with T handles but another of them dose not appear to have much of a purpose but of course most people make a comment about a certain thing an someone else hates the idea the other was thinking well I do me not a trying to make others happy other than my family! You hate T handles cause the Money or you not kw how to loosen or tighten bolts!?

@@HTMR hey ive been meaning to ask you.. are there a company that sells complete socket sets without missing sizes. Ive decided to go with gearwrench combo wrench and ratcheting wrenches. But now im looking at complete socket sets. I have a good kobalt set i like really well but what i dont like is missing sizes and duplicatea of 12 point and i will have a set of straight 6 point with a few 12 pt mixed in?? Personally id like an entire set 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 all non 12 pt.

Huge improvement over my cman box. The large/deep full width top drawer is great. The top 3 drawers hold my most commonly used tools and are easier to get to. Go for it!

One thing I disagree with you on is the money you spent on that 125 mL bike when you think about it yeah at the time you may have spent too much money but looking back from where you were when you first started out as a technician to where you are today spending all that money and time on that little bike made you the technician that you are today you paid for your education and cold hard cash that you earned yourself and in sweat and blood from your own body never forget that you made yourself who you wanted to be and yeah maybe it cost a lot of moneBut nothing worthwhile is cheap or easy you spent that money all those years ago to fix that bike up and look at you now years later a full-blown professional technician with a RUclips channel and a tour company supporting you and sending you tools I see the money you spent on that bike fixing it up and learning all the things you learned was well worth it in the end but I also do agree that your only want to do that maybe once in your life and if you don’t learn after the first or second time she probably pick a different professiony

I have no problem with you being sponsored or having nice tools, but to say that "strictly toolboxes has a box for EVERY price point" is just not realistic.
Maybe for every PRO price point, but they start at $950 for a 36" box which is double what I can get a 44" harbor freight box for.

Most plastic materials have been changed from America DuPont, GE to Chinese sources. The red plastic，Nylon，of Milwaukee tool handles/housings has been provided by a Chinese supplier since 2010，originally the Nylons were from DuPont，the Nylons-changeovers cause the handles/housings weak，like screws very likely strapped/slipped in screw holes/bosses, the dimensions are not as much stable. Lots of bad tools always first are sold to USA because nobody inspects the outgoing from China, and because Milwaukee Tool has the strongest warranty service ability in USA than in other countries.
During Milwaukee production processes, more than 5% defects found out by workers, also more defects fail to be screened out. Milwaukee Tool workers only get less than 300 dollars monthly salary，even plus OT to 276 hours a month（normal month-workhour is 176 hours，plus 100 hours OT. Chinese law only allows no more than 36 hours OT per month）, a worker can get about 500 dollars monthly salary，this salary very low for living in a big city in China, plus bad working environment(the management has no such safety-first mindset that loud noise but no issuing ear plugs to workers, and at dangerous stations very few goggles, no work boots issued to workers. workers stand more than 10 hours every day during on-duty time, so Milwaukee Tool with huge employee turnover，400% yearly turnover，i.e. workers averagely work only 3 months for the factory, cause workers without enough experience，lack of training，on top of few automation, then unable to ensure good quality. And most of Milwaukee Tool’s suppliers have worse worker turnover.
After Milwaukee tools launched one year, Milwaukee Tool will do so-called VE, value engineering, actually cost-down, change Germany trigger to Hong Kongese trigger even Chinese trigger/switch, change Japanese chuck to Chinese chuck, change some metal parts to plastic parts(like ring gears, motor covers),etc. Milwaukee Tool has a team, 50 people to do the VE. The quality would obviously become worse after VE.
Milwaukee Tool has really bad quality system, lose much profit because of failing to keep quality constant, like critical metal parts broken, every 2 months taking place, no methods to resolve the issue in many years, starting from 2008. Milwaukee Tool nail gun is another example that they have bad quality system, four metal parts of nailer, produced by investment casting(use wax), 50% is not in prints, not meeting drawings requirements, they just sort, sort at console assembly line, the result is Milwaukee nailer is an expensive trash.
Milwaukee Tool always look for cheap materials, cheap suppliers, worker salary is always only slightly higher than minimum, only 17 cent higher than hourly minimum salary.
Milwaukee Tool doesn’t care about customer when facing huge loss. In this year, because of poor design, 740 thousands of M18 9A battery packs with function problem, metal stripes separated from battery welding points when tools used for work by consumers, i.e. the circuit broken permanently, they did not recall these battery packs, only modified structures of the metal stripes and battery frame to improve the problem for new batches of battery packs, reworked 14k and scrapped 42k of the old plastic battery frames.
Milwaukee Tool has less experiences for making power tools comparing with Makita, Bosch, Dewalt(Milwaukee Tool CEO JG and a senior VP JW had worked at Dewalt for years). Milwaukee Tool only has grew fast from 2008 year. They copy and compare tool life tests with Bosch, Dewalt’s tools during new product development stages, even for troubleshooting during R&D, they would measure dimensions of these competitors’ components.
This company is also an ugly company, three years ago, a Hong Kongese manager tried to rape a female employee during their business trip to Taiwan, the company fired him and less than half year, hired him again as a manager, then the female employee left this company and lost her job. Two years ago, in its factory dorm a more severe rape case really took place by a male senior manager to a girl/employee, and this Company didn’t do anything to him, like firing him, like reporting him to police，helping officer to arrest him.

I looked at most of the same socket rails and I really like the look of the Westling's they look nice all laid out but their spendy plus they take up to much space and i don't like how loose the sockets set on the round pegs, I actually ended up buying Husky socket rails at my local Home Depot www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-3-8-in-Drive-Socket-Rail-H3DRAIL/202923451 I bought extra rails and took some socket clips off to fill out the unused space on the rails so they're full
